I was just thinking, how do you guys decide on the name of your ships for characters? Any methords, i mean, i allways name mine for one chacter after planets, like, a defiant class i call the U.S.S. Pluto because it seems fitting or the Saturn for the Oddesy class (Seems fitting due to its abilty to have various things orbiting it, like worker Bee's, Escout or the saucer)

At first, I used Greek/Roman gods, but then I realized that a lot of people do that.
I tried going to Wikipedia and searching "lists" so that I could find things in a series to name my ships after; planets, presidents, continents, sci-fi authors, casts of movies, etc....
Dirty little secret: I finally settled on the cast of a favorite sci-fi show, and now my ships are the U.S.S. Stewart, U.S.S. McFadden, U.S.S. Burton, U.S.S. Frakes, U.S.S. Dorn, U.S.S. Sirtis, U.S.S. Spiner, U.S.S. Muldaur, and the Runabout U.S.S. Wheaton.
For example, my Dreadnought Gal-X is called the Yamato because its from the mirror universe, where USS Yamato did not get blown up by the Iconians, and survived long enough to be retrofitted with a Wave Motion Gun, like its 1979 space-faring namesake.
Hah, i have no idea what an Animiwink is, but okay! and thats kinda where my making came from, Cannon, kinda... Because i got Star Trek Amarda II, which, was an awesome game in my veiw (but i would of loved to have single player skirmish's), and it came with a "U.S.S Jupiter" Card, Arika Class, So, when i reached level 20 and got an Arika call, i naturaly called it the U.S.S Jupiter, Moved to the U.S.S Pluto (now Pluto MK I) and now use U.S.S. Saturn and U.S.S Pluto (Retrofit)
I name all my Fed engi's ships after songs from a certain band, my Fed tac's ships after Diablo 2 unique items, my Fed sci's ships after Babylon 5 Minbari names, my KDF tac's ships after Homeworld (the 3D PC RTS) ships and characters, and finally my KDF sci's ships after various Middle Eastern gods & goddesses.
on one of my characters all my ships had a viking theme - Ragnarok, Vallhalla, Midgard, Mjolnir etc
on another (T'Challa aka Marvel's Black Panther - and yes a Caitain) all the ships were named for elements in that characters story: Avenger, Vibranium, Ororo, Wakanda etc
on Sif my science officer most of the ships have been named for puzzles - Conundrum, Enigma etc or scientists - Tesla, Fermat etc
over on the KDF side I mostly went with what the randomiser would generate although my last BOP is called B'Dog - Bad Dog (I was watching the School Reunion episode of David Tennants run on Doctor Who and K9 was called Bad Dog by Tony Head's character and I thought it was a pretty fitting description of a BOP - a nasty terrier of a thing which nips away at you and then bites hard!)
Depends on the character
my vulcan @name character names his after science programs (Horizon for example)
My primary named the Galaxy class thundershild after the warship in war of the worlds
But my Favorite ship name is the USS Blaze (named after the character johnny blaze)
I've been naming my ships after famous boxers. Leonard, Robinson, Marciano, Clay, De La Hoya, Fraizer. It seems appropriate to me as I usually fly escorts, in essence the fighters ship class, and as a personal nod towards my grandfather who was a boxer himself.
My science ships were named first after Greek Cities, then Greek Landmarks (the Parthenon), and then finally I settled on great Philosophers and Scientists (Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, Archimedes)
My first Klingon was a mixed bag of names, after songs, using the name randomizer, and now I'm flying the I.K.S. Masamune
My second Fed had his cruisers named after Roman Emperors during the Pax Romana (Roman Peace), while my second Klingon had his cruisers named after Klingon Chancellors (save for my K'tinga who was named the I.K.S. Lord Kruge).
All my ships sport my favorite comic hero names. Across both factions. And each ship is colored to match their costumes. So if you see USS Wolverine flying around. Or my BOFF team with two green characters and a ****ed off canadian, it's me.
I generally run with a theme name for each character.
My KDF Tac used "adjective bird" for all ship names, this was back in the day when I got every ship at every level because it was done with EC and as a Klingon you where rolling in it. Shuttles are included in this them.
My Fed used two ship names for every ship he flew. All Cruisers had the same name. All Escorts as well, same registry number and I advanced the letter on it.
My Fed Science is using all random names that begin with A. Sometimes that is a lot of clicking.
My KDF Science isn't really being played so I haven't thought up a theme yet.
My Fed Tac will be using names from the game Space Pirate Amazon Ninja Catgirl, for ships and crew. Things like Bloodfur and Purrs in Shadow. And yes the game is referred to by an Acronym.
I have many ways to name my ships. Some have names from different series, Trek or non-trek. Some have something to do with certain tv-series episode names. One has the name of a star. The rest are whatever came to mind at that point.
But seriously, I'm happy to see you're giving it some thought. Too many playing this game name their ships after whatever they happened to have pulled out of their TRIBBLE that morning. I ran across a ship named Poontang the other day. Poontang? Seriously? Here's a guy, thought I, who's just really not into the spirit of this whole Star Trek thing.
I look to the British Royal Navy. I like the way they name some of their ships with adjectives and nouns which are off the beaten path, i.e...
I tend to merge my two greatest obsessions, Star trek, and Tolkien!
All my Fed ships are names after places in Middle Earth (but the more obscure ones, NOT U.S.S. Shire/Gondor etc, Rather, Eriador, Belfalas, Arnor, Angmar) except My main ship, The Dreadnought, U.S.S. Annatar (Saurons "Good guy" handle, means Bringer of Gifts, called it that as I've ended up being too generous on this game [Kitted a stranger out with AP beams from mem alpha after 20mins of chatting! lol].)
As for my KDF Ships, all named with the random button as far as I know, (Rarely play him, always feel like I'm a traitor when I do! lol!) But HIS name is Melkor (Saurons Lord and Banished Leader for those who don't know!)
I use Artemis Fowl names. Each ship corresponding to a Colfer character with similar traits.
i.e. Holly is my Defiant as shes small, deadly and can cloak.
Domovoi is my Sovy
Artemis is my Intrepid

Great... Now I have the urge to rename one of my ships USS Esteld
I was a massive fan of the name Odyssey irrespective of the Odyssey Star Cruiser, so each time I received a new ship, the old one got a placeholder name / registry and the new one became the USS Odyssey.
Depends on the character, the ship, or whatever mood I'm in when I name the character's first ship. I'll usually try to reference something I like; such as deciding to name my Lethean's 5 ships after Golbez and his 4 lords [semi-keeping their tiers]; or just keep spamming the random name until I find something I like. Once I even left a ship with its given name, because it was the name a close friend uses for herself.
So far I've only used the same name for each ship in a character's progression once, for my Caitian. Every ship she flew at her tier was the Catnip, and the old Catnips just got renamed to other catty names.
Most my cruiser gets German names such as Bismarck, Wilhelm. My science ships get the title Squirrel Blaster or some variant thereof. My escorts get Vengeance. All my klink whips get Tax auditor except my kelfar which due to lack of a better name, IKS Peanut Butter. I do have have a galx named Purgatory and another on called spaceveegievamp, in honor of the 1950s The Thing movie I was watching at the time.

Why not do what the enterprise's did, add a letter?

Nice. You read them too? I have read all of them except the Atlantis Complex.
My Constitition is called the USS Abaddonafter a play that I wrote when I was an actress (Adit Abaddon. For those who don't know an adit is a horizontal entrance to a mine and Abaddon is an old name for Hell and the devil. 'Highway to Heaven' and 'Road to Hell'... sorry had to share that )
TheGalaxy is calledEuropa after the continent so I could take a picture of the Europa over Europe.
The Excellsior I couldn't think of a name, so I asked a non-STO friend to name it and she chose Thistleflick after a character she used for a series of novels.
Prometheous is called Narcissus after a mythical man who was so beautiful that he fell in love with himself.
and my Defiant retro is calledFerocious... Defiant, Ferocious... get it? ^^
This will probably sound lame, and something that also makes me unoriginal, but I happen to be a very big fan of Admiral Kathryn Janeway. With Voyager as my favorite series, and the series which cemented me into Trekdom as a whole, I have always admired her as a character and female role model. I named my ship the U.S.S. Janeway in honor of her service in Starfleet. I even have the Intrepid class so I feel like a real Voyager geek.
