Well, at the moment I am naming all my ships after Vocaloids (If you don't know what they are, look them up) so my Vice Admiral has the U.S.S. Rin Kagamine and my new character will have the U.S.S. Hatsune Miku and so on.
my first few ship names we in memory of friends and loved ones that had passed away.
However, my current ship is the Protector, after the ship from Galaxy Quest and my shuttle is the Chenoweth, named after the actress, because they are both tiny, but feisty
The two latest editions to my fleet:
U.S.S. Rezel, Type-10 shuttle: Given it appears to be offspring of a Defiant, I named it after a mobile suit who considers the zeta gundam (from which I named my defiant class) a "parent" design.
U.S.S. Normandy, MVAE: With the rapidly approaching release of ME3, I named my MVAE after SSV Normandy (SR-2)
U.S.S Albion - the surname of my first toon to enter the metaverse in the form a Second Life character, she's kind of stuck with me for the past 7 or so years in various incarnations.
I.K.S Fus'Ro'Dah - very Klingon sounding and rather apt for a ship designed purely to spit hot death at anything which gets in it's way, oh and spending far to much time playing that awesome game.
Also looking forward to ME3. I just hope they can take the best bits from both games to make something truly epic
So named because the Roman Legions typically used a short sword commonly referred to as the Gladius and a member of a Roman Legion is referred to as a Legionary.

I would name a Galaxy class the USS Praetor then!
'Hastati' for Yellowstone assault-config shuttles, Triarii for medium cruisers and Principe for those in my group who fly escorts.
And when I get the Odyssey +1, it's going to be Caesar, pronounced with the proper "K"
USS Bright Venture
(forget ship class - edit) Odyssey Class
name of the wraith city-ship in the stargate atlantis book "The Lost," without the USS part.
I've got a few more since I last (I expect) posted in here.
I.K.S. Mustakrakish - Garumba siege destroyer, named for a lake troll accidently awakened by the band Dethklok in Metalocalypse.
I.K.S. Stu'Ka - My Hegh'ta is running under this name now since I turned into something of a Tric-bomber, and the name is from the JU-87 Stuka dive bomber.
U.S.S. Thunderhorse - Fleet Escort, also a Metalocalypse reference.
U.S.S. Crazyhorse - The one from TNG, an Excelsior.
U.S.S. Apache - My tactical captain's Excelsior, in line with the many native American ship names that the class appeared with.
U.S.S. Phoenix - Nebula, named for Captain Maxwell's Nebula in "The Wounded", partially a response to all the Galors we're seeing, partially a nod to the phoenix that broke the light barrier.
New Franco-German Diplomatic Corps officer for roleplay:
Tier 0 - USS Fantastique, after the WW2 French heavy destroyer that survived though the entirety of World War 2. Likewise I intend to use the Miranda with Tier IV equipment for some of the later missions or as a training vessel for teamplay.
Tier 1 - USS Chevalier Du Ciel, after the famous French Air Force-supported movie of the same name. One of my latest additions to the regular RP staff also named her newborn Ciel
* in the link above are some footage from the movie Les Chevaliers du Ciel ("Sky Fighters" in English). This movie is unique in that virtually all in flight sequences were filmed with actual aircraft and some creative piloting. The Mirage III fighters had custom installed camera pods for air to air filming and the pilots eventually could safely film each other in flight with under 3 meters separation from each aircraft.
I named my ship the USS Whangarei rather whimsically. Whangarei is the principal city in Northland, New Zealand. I'm a Kiwi, but I'm from Auckland rather than Whangarei, and "USS Auckland" I had seen before and didn't sound too special to me.
I previously had the USS Deschanel, USS Deschanel II (these should be obvious as to their origin), and the USS Heart of Gold (from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). That's not every ship that I've had, but I don't even remember the early ones' names.

I have a USS Australia and the USS Canberra because these were quite good allied cruisers in WW2. And also because I have multiple characters using US Navy warship names.
Also wanting to have a more international and diverse ship naming protocol because the Federation isn't just the US (well at least from how I see it).
My first STO ship was the USS Pellaken
I noticed when I was little that a lot of star ships were named after birds, so I did the same... cept I've always been a terrible speller, and that's how it came out :P I've used this name online for many years and almost every instance of it is me.
My current ship is the USS Legislative Branch, a different take on the "Constitution" class.
USS Purity, my Advanced Escort. I forget where I came up with the name, but it's hilariously inappropriate considering the genocide I've put the Romulans, Remans and Cardassians through with it.
USS Sakala, my Reconnaissance Science Vessel. The name came from my boyfriend's high school crush, her surname being Sakala. I found it adorable, so I rolled with it. It's certainly unique among all of the ship names I see out there.
When my Main was T4 a couple of months after launch, I had a Tactical Escort I named the USS Tempest.
When I got to T5, I came up with a story that it had been destroyed in battle, so I could go to a Fleet Escort. However, when Tac Escort Retrofits became available, I snapped one up, naming it the USS Raging Tempest, because it was basically the original Tempest reborn, except much stronger. It now uses the Sao Paulo Exterior.
I could've sworn I'd posted here, but I guess there's no better time than the present:
USS Zakat: My main's first ship, named for a song from my favorite band, means "sunset" in Russian
USS Cosmos: The original name of my first Nova-class ship and my main's Odyssey Ops cruiser
USS Kuiper: Original name of my Olympic-class, currently the name of my Nebula retrofit, named for astronomer Gerard Kuiper
USS Mariner: My first Intrepid, named for the NASA probe series sent to Mercury, Venus, and Mars that later evolved into the Viking and Voyager programs
USS Selene: My Luna-class sceince vessel, named for the Greek goddess of the moon
USS Charon: Oracle-class science vessel, named for Pluto's moon and the ferryman of the underworld in Greek mythology
USS Aria: My tac officer's first ship, named for the above-mentioned band
USS Orion: Originally my tac officer's Exeter-class ship, now said officer's Odyssey
USS Viceroy: Galaxy-class, named for an old starship design I came up with a few years back
USS Caliburn: Sovereign-class, named for one of the ancient names of Excalibur. Or maybe it was a totally different sword, I forget...
USS Kilij: My engineer's Saber-class, a type of sword from Turkey
USS Vigilant: Engineer's Sao Paulo-class, I picked out the name before remembering that there was already a Vigilant-class and just stuck with it
USS S'harien: Engineer's Prometheus-class, a Vulcan swordsmith mentioned in the Romulan campaign, seemed fitting for an escort with a Vulcan captain
USS Von Braun: Oberth-class, named for everyone's favorite German rocket scientist
USS Pioneer: New science captain's Intrepid-class, named for the two probes sent ahead of the Voyager program
IKS Omolgeth, IKS Helexith, IKS Greeshakk, IKS Lashnar: A pair of raptors and science vessels respectively used by my KDF characters, named for characters/locations in the Nova Refuge (soon to be) book series
IKS Comicron One: Phalanx-class, jokinginly named for the ship used by Linkara on Atop the Fourth Wall
IKS K'mpec: Bortas-class, named for a Klingon chancellor
IKS Picard: Bortasqu on Tribble, I'm honestly surprised it let me use the name
U.S.S. Olympic (Sovereign): pure luck of the draw. This ship still has a free rename, and I'm not using it.
U.S.S. Everest (Odyssey Star Cruiser): Originally the Martin, but I wanted a name that befits the ship's girth.
U.S.S. Earl Grey-T (Galaxy): Purely for the pun.
U.S.S. Socrates- Named for the famous Greek Philosopher. Other ships of my first character (A science officer0 include the U.S.S. Plato (a Vulcan D'kyr Vessel) and the U.S.S Archimedes (Advanced Escort)
U.S.S. Hadrian (Excelsior Cruiser)-Named after the Roman Emperor, third of the five good Emperors of the Pax Romana (Roman Peace). Other cruiser I had included the U.S.S Nerva (TOS Constitution) and the U.S.S. Trajan (Cruiser Refit)
Now for the Klingons:
I.K.S. Masamune- named after the mythical sword, which befits the Captain's attitude and the ship (a Qin Heavy Raptor)
I.K.S. Sugh'da- random name because the game won't let me name it the I.K.S. Martok (yet allowed me to name my Vorcha the Gowron and my K'tinga the Lord Kruge, go figure). Need to find another Klingon Chancellor to rename the ship (not J'mpok)

Pure win for both of these names +100000000000000000000000000000000000000
USS Indomitable(Sovereign)-fitting for a powerful assault/offensive cruiser
USS Sojourner(Odyssey)-appropriate for explorer flagship cruiser.
IKS Nenghep(Bortasqu)-Klingon, means Age of Ascension, whatever that means sounds cool enough
IKS Yoj(Bortasqu)-Klingon, means Judgment, this is the last thing you're going to see Starpeeps and after this a long sleep in death until judgment day before God
IKS Tavor(B'rel retrofit)- ancient Aramaic meaning misfortune, hoping it will bring misfortune to the ship it targeted.
IKS Korona(Bortas)-Russian and Greek, meaning crown or crown of leaves, ship fitting for a king.

Nice Thread...
An Excelsior class, named for the NCC 1664, USS Excalibur who's crew were killed in wargames...
Also has led to some great images for my Second Life group.... where we RP in 2296, surely the best era?

LOL.
Well it's not as bad as naming a ship after the host country.
Oh no, what happens if someone sinks the USS America xD
