Let's see ... the USS Spitfire (Defiant class) that my engineer flies shouldn't need much of an explanation, and explaining the USS Harmony that my tac jumps into when she's not flying the Lyra will be a little embarrassing. As for the Lyra (Luna class), named after the constellation.
The USS Harmony (Odyssey class) was named in contrast to my klink's Bortas, the IKS Discord. Not just referencing the two opposing concepts but ... well, this is the point where I get into My Little Pony, Discord the character (as played by John de Lancie) and the Elements of Harmony. The individual Elements being names for my shuttles, currently the USS Loyalty (Peregrine), USS Honesty (Runabout) and USS Generosity (Type 8 Shuttle)
U.S.S Leaky Bucket. Defient-r named this why because when it rains pain, she just keeps on taking it on and dishing it back out.
U.S.S RubberDucky malestrom class fleet escort, because she has a hul that just pop's back just like a rubber duck bath toy that was squized pop's back in to shape.
This is a totally non-canon ship for a totally non-canon RP depicting a scenario where 'independent' traders use centuries-old obsolete former warships for interstellar trading. In this case the Kitten is an ancient Bird of Prey captained by a very TRIBBLE courtesan / businesswoman who claims to have been enslaved by the Orion Syndicate in the late 2300s and now claims to have 'clients' at Starbase 39 in Alpha Centauri.
Suffice to say the Federation roleplayers (playing a Coast Guard type role in the Regulus system) were extremely suspicious about my character. They literally went wtf at my KDF char being a human with a very 'colourful' written background on her stats page.
I managed to survive their interrogation by 'passively' seducing the (gentlemanly) captain of the Akira class patrol ship that intercepted her and charged him 25,000 GPL for 'inconveniences and delays' since you know, you don't keep my clients waiting.
Unfortunately during the questioning aboard the USS Vigilant my character 'accidentally' disclosed the function of the Klingon Battle Cloak system during her description of the late 2300s Orion Syndicate raid on a Federation starliner.
Guess I will have to watch my step around KDF players too :P
Thunderchild Class: USS Spirit of Fire
I'm a huge HALO fan and read many of the comic/novels, I like names that are made up of three words, though I dare not use the Pillar of Autumn
Sao Paulo Refit: USS Razor
I think when I get to the Sovereign class, USS Queen Elizabeth ? Majestic ship after all
First Ship was the USS Halifax, and I just let the random pick it. Current Ship is the USS Arcadia, named after the Dark Horse Comics character Ghost's city she operates in.
Here are the names of my ships and their origins behind them.
Nova: USS Eclipse. It made sense because it seems like Nova-class ships are named for some kind of astronomical phenomena (ex. Nova) or something to do with the moon (ex. Equinox).
Intrepid: USS Eclipse-A. Obviously named after my Nova which I had a lot of fun in early on.
Odyssey: USS Aquarius. Named for the lunar module of Apollo 13 (for those that don't know Apollo 13's command module was named Odyssey).
Luna: USS Triton. Named for Neptune's moon (in keeping with Luna-class ships being named for the moons of our solar system).
Prometheus: USS Epimethius. Named for the brother of Prometheus in Greek mythology.
Defiant: USS Avenger. I always liked that ship from Armada I.
I recently bought a Galor and was fishing for a name.
Now, I'm not one to break the 4th wall by naming it something ridiculous. So I looked through some of the Canon names... not many, to be honest. I found the Prakesh (Gul Dukat's old ship) and the Kraxon (The ship that arrested Thomas Riker).
Kraxon was ok, but it didn't really stick.
Now, my character's in a fleet called SWORD. A lot of the ships I have on that character are bladed weapon references, (IE USS Kindjal, my Excelsior). So I thought... why not go with that?
Ok... need a good sword name. And somewhere in that search, I thought... 'Cardassian names reminds me of Ancient Egyptian.'. It does. Sharp, lots of k's, etc.
So what's a famous Egyptian blade?
And it hit me. I renamed my Galor the USS Khopesh.
My current two ship names are both named after anchient Iranian cities, Persepolis and Esfahan (the latter still being a working city today).
I am an immigration lawyer and for many years I did a lot of woork for the Iranian ex-pat communitty in Britain. I was also married to an Iranian woman. Both resulted in me having a lot of contact with their culture and traditions and, indeed, travelling to Iran. I have become deeply fond of Iranians and their culture, and at a time when the Islamic dictators that they are forced to live under are used by the west as a scapegoat to tar all Iranians with the same brush, it is, for me, not greater time to celebrate a beautiful & achient culture and people. A people who do not deserve to treated like they are in any way similar to the totalitarian nutjobs who control their daily lives, and are to often easily dismissed people peopel in the west, especially in America.
On my main, I name my ships by animals, in Icelandic language. Since I'm close to be a forester (still studying ) and I find that our local beautiful wildlife is really underestimated (everyone chooses either wolves, big cats or maybe birds of prey) I honour some of these proud beings in this way
The two lines of names I mostly use are U.S.S. Villyg
also In the most animes black and violet colors together are meanign for darkness .. thats why i use also polaron and hargh peng and of course the jem hadar engines .. all violet XD
Well, my Klingon ship is just named randomly, so there's no rhyme or reason for the name of that ship.
As for my Feds, my Engie Cruiser Captain is running around in an Odyssey-Class named U.S.S. Celestia. Yeah, I named the ship after an uber-powerful Alicorn, but it seemed appropriate after I named my Assault Cruiser the U.S.S. Discordia, because Jean De Lanci played Q and played Discord and since he's like my favorite character, I named the ship after him from the same show.
As for my Tactical Escort captain running around in a Fleet Escort, I named that ship the U.S.S. Daring Do. I figured using the name of a character who's a knock-off replica of Indiana Jones/Nathan Drake/Random Archeologist Adventurer type seemed appropriate. Plus I had a MLP:FiM theme running through my previous Captain's ships. Go fig.

U.S.S. Mastodon - Miranda class
U.S.S. Gojira - Constitution class
- named for the oft ill-fated airline of the "mid-to-late 20th Century"
Oceanic was the lead airline in the best Steven Seagal movie of all time: Executive Decision .
It was good for two reasons:
1.) Seagal buys it 15 minutes into the film
2.) John Leguizamo (sp?) manages to go through an entire film without annoying the **** out of me.

Nah, that movie was all about Oliver Platt.
The two lines of names I mostly use are U.S.S. Villyg
