My highest ranking character is an engineer flying the USS Wozniak. Not because I'm an Apple aficionado, but because I figure that's the kind of name that might appear on a vessel that far in the future, and because it seemed appropriate for an engineer character to look up to someone like that.
Most of my other vessels on all my characters are named for cities, states, weapons, indigenous American tribes, and scientists.
Admiral Kavalon: Assault Cruiser USS Justice - Kavalon was the name of my God of Justice in one of my old D&D Campaigns)
Commander Dram: Research Vessel USS Manhattan - Named after the Manhattan Project
Lt Commander Zibwar: Cruiser USS Gilgamesh - She's a klingon, and I wanted a Terran based mythological hero that wasn't Thor or Hercules.
Lt Commander Dekker: Escort USS Peacemaker - Named after the famed revolver of the old west. All his ships will be named after famous firearms, all the way up to the Advanced Escort the USS Ma Deuce.
My assault cruiser is the USS Freedom-A (The original Freedom was my Galaxy class). Named for the principle of course. Figured it set well with what the Federation stands for.
USS Margo Lane - Escort - Capt Lamont Cranston - I'm an old time radio collector and The Shadow is a favorite.
USS Banshee - Science - Capt La Crosse - Capt name is a play on words for lacrosse, I coach a girls team. As for the ship name, it speaks for itself.
USS Dark Claw - Escort - Capt Midnight - My daughter and her friend suggested the names for the cat we sit for when friends take long trips. The cat likes me, so they thought it would be nice.
USS Stingray - Cruiser - Capt Tom Dodge - See movie Down Periscope, really funny.
I took the theme of maritime disasters for my main, most recognizable one was the RMS Titanic. My Science has the Hindenburg (Yes it was an air ship, so it counts) Lindy's Revenge is an inherited nickname among my family and deals with last name and right of succession. My grandfather was Lindy, My dad was Lindy Jr. My sister took Lindy III but I loved Lindy's Revenge so I wasn't too upset even though technically I'm the heir to the name. My Klingon ship is Ghetto Klingon for "Where is the bathroom?"
Judging from some of the shipname origin descriptions there seems to be an unusual high rate of rather zealous people playing a game that is set in a universe were science has completely overthrown religion...
Not completely overthrown...just recognized it for what it is--mythology. A metaphor for the human spirit and our striving for that which is greater than we are, like the stars. The Daedalus Project doesn't denote the actual spiritual significance that the Greek stories about him may have once contained, just the metaphorical emphasis on science and technology that runs through his stories.
Cultures are defined by the stories they tell themselves. It was no accident that the Greek and Roman gods became associated with planets, moons, and constellations (in Western Civilization). Then they became further entrenched by Earth space exploration (Mercury, Apollo, Gemini, etc). It's ongoing.
USS Infinity: This was the name of my first sim I started, the name I gave for in infinite space there are infinite amounts of problems requiring infinite amounts of solutions.
USS Ryuu: The dragon spirit just like that name.
USS Stargazer: Name of my second sim and so it had to be in game, I just love the quote that comes with it: "To bring light into the darkness"
USS Nyx: Because of the mothership/supercarrier (*WTFH they name em these days) from EVE as I loved that in EVE.
USS My Lady: Fantasy mood I was in.
USS Charis: After the kingdom and later empire of Charis from the Savehold series books by David Weber
USS Briarios (to much whiskey might be spelled wrong): From Appleseed and back than my main fed character was still named Hitomi Deunan.
USS *fill In a Dutch navy vessel for I am proud of our little navy)*
My main to ship names I like to use are USS Masamune and USS Muramasa.
The swords of Muramasa are often contrasted with those of Masamune, another Japanese swordsmith.
There is a legend of a Masamune blade and a Muramasa blade being put into a river strewn with lotus leaves. The leaves swirled around the Masamune blade untouched, but the Muramasa blade would cut them.
It has also been told that once drawn, a Muramasa blade has to draw blood before it can be returned to its scabbard, even to the point of forcing its wielder to wound himself or commit suicide. Thus, it is thought of as a demonic cursed blade that creates bloodlust in those who wield it.
USS Star Hammer was for a ship I made in Spore a long time ago. Sounded reasonably powerful and menacing.
USS Omega Point is a science ship. Omega point is the culmination of all knowledge. Not all knowledge on earth or all knowledge recorded, but all knowledge period. Omniscience would be a better description.
USS Omniscience, see above.
USS Moonraker: The highest sail on the tallest mast of a sailing ship. Good name for a space ship.
USS War Machine: Captained by an overly aggressive Ferengi with a Klingon complex. xD
USS Tsar Bomba: Captained by the aforementioned Ferengi, as well. Tsar Bomba was the largest nuclear bomb ever detonated.
Comments
For those who might not remember, thats the baby leviathan gunship on Farscape!

Unless your ship is named the "I.K.S. 13462" then no, it doesn't have meaning in binary. It might mean something in ASCII though .
(8192+4096+1024+32+16+2=13462)

Um, it should be 42
*edit- yea your right, ik guessing its ASCIIit should be binary, will be changing it when I log back on, binary should be 101010
Did the bloody thing wrong for a good bit of time, will have to rename it, or go the Null Database drop route

Klink Ships: IKV Demonslayer, IKV Doomslayer, IKV Anarchist
All "historical" ship names from Star Fleet Battles history.

My old Galaxy (how I miss it!) was called the USS Ossian.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ossian
Previous ship: U.S.S. Crimson Sunrise
Both are names of fallen Commonwealth ships from the show "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda" and I intend to follow this naming scheme.

If you need that explaining to you, you should hand your Nerd Cards in at the door.
Hahahaha win. I use the Akivari Daikatana in Oblivion. So my first thought was BOOYA! Kudos on a nice ship name.
