I try to come up with unique names for my ships that are still trekky sounding. Thoug hwhen I get my Intrepid it will be U.S.S. Andromeda after the trek sim I ran years ago.

My current ship a little nova/aurora mix is the U.S.S. Surprise after the the H.M.S. Surprise in the movie master and commander.

OK, so now I got to Vice Admiral and got a whole bunch of new ships, I thought I'd update.

    U.S.S. Bravery - Miranda Class - Ensign/Lieutenant
As my starter ship, I wanted a name that sounded insipring and she was a tough little ship and certainly brave. My fleet did an event where we retrofitted admiral weapons on to our starter ships and the U.S.S. Bravery really stood her ground against Borg cubes and such!

U.S.S. Paragon - Constitution Class - Lieutenant Commander
I decided on Paragon because the definition of that is "a model of excellence" and I wanted to continue the trend of names that would give my ship some kind of personality or reflect the kind of captain I wanted to be. Plus I love Mass Effect!

    U.S.S. Paladin - Dakota Class - Commander
I really liked the name of my last ship, the Paragon, so it was hard to come up with something new. I picked Paladin because it sounded similar and also had an awesome meaning "warrior for a cause" which was exactly what I wanted this ship to be.

    U.S.S. Meridian - Galaxy Class - Captain
When it came to this ship, I felt that I'd finally got to having the Galaxy I'd always wanted and also the Cardassian front turned out to be the most fun episodes, being based around DS9. Meridian means "a period of great prosperity and success / highest development". Also I wanted to get away from the names beginning with the letter "P" so that it didn't look like some kind of trend!

U.S.S. Paradigm - Sovereign Class - Rear Admiral, Lower Half
Paradigm is a synonym of Paragon and Meridian - "an example of highest acheivement or role model". And went back to the trend of names beginning with "P" at the same time!

U.S.S. Prodigy - Luna/Sol Hybrid - Rear Admiral, Upper Half
The Prodigy continues the names beginning with "P" theme and also is my first science vessel, so it gets a more academic sort of name.

U.S.S. Visionary - Intrepid Refit - Vice Admiral
The Visionary is the current ship I'm commanding. I think it's a cool word, with a meaning I like. It was also one of my favourite DS9 episodes.

I've had several in my primary character:

Daring (Miranda class)- British destroyer of the 1950s
Ticonderoga (Constitution class)- battle in American Revolution, and often US Navy ship name
Ahwahnee (Cheyenne class)- veteran of Wolf 359, ship returned to service in time for Dominion War
Utopia Planitia (Galaxy class)- named for the famous Starfleet shipyards on Mars
Formidable (Sovereign class)- British aircraft carrier of WWII
Temeraire (star cruiser)- named for a British battleship that was canceled at the end of WWII (my current command)
Cape Fear (runabout)- named for river in North Carolina

    My alt-character has had:

Hornet (Centaur class)- named for American aircraft carrier of WWII
Swiftsure (old TOS Connie)- named for starship mentioned in novel "Spock's World"
El Dorado (modified Vesper class)- named for possible starship listed in TOS production memos
Firebrand (Akira class)- named for a ship lost at Wolf 359
    Minotaur (Defiant clas)- mythological monster
Audacious (at first Celestial, then refitted to Galaxy class)- British aircraft carrier (current command)

    My Klingon character has had:

Pok' Choi (Bird of Prey)- a play on "bok choy," a weed of some kind sold in grocery stores that always sounded Klingon to me. :D
Klothos (K'Tanco class)- named for a Klingon cruiser...I think either in TOS or the Animated Series (current)

my primary is the uss. Cobra. in this online noval i was reading about an attack on earth by the breen, the cobra (a defiant class) was found afloat by the uss swiftsure, and they attempted to salvage it...

i felt that since i had a defiant class, instead of being the 400th person to name it the defiant, i would give a nod to this awsome online noval...

I named my ship after the Latin word "Annuit Coeptis" Which means "He honors Our Undertakings"
That Latin phrase is written on the back of every one dollar bill in the US. I thought it fit the Star Trek theme and I love it as a name.

I.K.S. Vanguard. It is a piece in The Klingon board game Of Klin Zha, From the Book, "The Final Reflection" Captain Krenn in that book, named his ship, the Fencer, another piece in the game. I wanted to go with that same idea, but not steal the name in it's entirety.

USS Tuebor - meaning "I will defend," state motto of Michigan (cruisers under my command).
USS Grand Valley - homage to my university alma mater, Grand Valley State University (escorts under my command).

My registry numbers also hold meaning with the addition of the obligatory 9 in front.

IKS MaQmigh - Klingon translated as "Dark Omen" (I thought that was pretty Klingon-y).

Imperial Class - USS Heritage - A newer, more capable (I wish) ship than the venerable Sovereign class.. "Its ongoing mission, to seek out new life and new civilizations - Then phaser them to whatever incarnation of hell, they believe in"

Defiant Class - USS Dies Irae - Latin for "Days of Wrath" named for the WH40k Titan (although I believe there is a biblic reference as well)

Intrepid Class - USS Warborn D - Unlike a "normal" Science Vessel, this ship is set up strictly for combat, Born of War, so to speak.

Negh'var - Borgath / Generic Name - Have to find the klingon word for "Immortal"

Raptor - May'be'nl' - Klingon for "Battlesister" - Captain is a alien female (with space traits, efficient warp, techie, stuff like that), made to look like a human - I imagine the name is a honorific, given by the High Council, for honorable conduct in battle.

I wanted to have the USS Invictus (always liked the name, and what it means) but then I ranked up as was thinking what to go with, and I hit on the idea of getting similar sounding names, so I went with ships that have severed in the royal navy with names that start with I or In.

    So I've got

    USS Invictus
    USS Indomitable
    USS Indus
USS Indefatigable (Love the books as well, so it was a must have)
    USS Invincible
    USS Impulsive
USS Illustrious (my current favourite name, my tactical refit rocks it)

For my science officer I'm going with famous scientist, some common, like USS Newton, and some not so well known in pop culture like USS Korolev.

For my Engineer when I start I'm going with exploration themes, like Discovery, Endeavour, etc.

At first I started out naming my ships after famous Captains and Generals:

    USS Robert E Lee
    USS Schwartzkopf
USS Benjamin Maxwell (anyone recognize that name?)

Now, I fly a Luna class starship which is named after a moon in the Sol system, which is in keeping with EU canon:

USS Triton (a moon orbiting Neptune)

USS Stellar Drift - An homage to a ship I used to roleplay back in the day. It was originally a joke, as I needed to name a small science ship and all I could think of were silly names. Originally, the science ship was very slow-moving, hence the name. Now, it's the featured ship in my fanfic series and a name that I hold dear along with ships like the Enterprise, Defiant and Voyager.

USS Gambier Bay - Named in honor of another American escort carrier that fought valiantly with Taffy 3 at the Battle off Samar in World War II.

USS Audacious - I needed a name for a starter ship, and couldn't think of anything, but wanted something good. So, I went through a British ship registry, because the British are good at naming ships and found this one. The name fits.

Did I post in here already? I can't remember.

The U.S.S. Sedna, a Luna-class vessel, sort of follows the tradition of naming the ship after a moon, though in this case it refers to the trans-neptunian small planetoid Sedna. There are, after all, so many moons in the Sol system before running out or finding another PC ship named the same (I really wanted Oberon or Titania at first, since I'm into faerie stories, but I was concerned that they'd be far more common names to come across) - Sedna seemed an acceptable enough compromise.

The planetoid's ID number, 90377, is at the root of my science vessel's NCC registry - had STO allowed us to gain access to numbers at the 90 000 limit instead of 91 000, I could've made it an exact match. The planetoid Sedna itself was also named after the Inuit goddess Sedna, so, my ship's name has a double meaning too! :)

Since my character is Betazoid, I thought of naming my ship after one of Betazed's three moons... but they weren't very appealing. I also did not think it made much sense for my captain to be assigned to a ship coincidentally named after a moon of her home planet/system.

    I originally used knightly names
    USS Paladin
    USS Templar
    USS Hospitalier
    USS Knight
    USS Lancer

    Then switched to
    USS Phobos
    USS Diemos
    USS Mars

Mars is obviously a planet and Greek god of war, Phobos and Diemos are fear and dread, the companions of the god of war and moons of mars.

USS Watchtower - Named for the legendary homebase of the Justice League
USS Fremont - Named for the Fremont Bridge in Portland, OR.

IKS maQ'legh - the word maQ'legh means "Dark Omen" (although it should be noted I have found several spellings for this word)
