A open beta is typically more for scaling servers to match public capacity so when they launch they dont go "omgwtfbbq" and crash 4/10 days a week.
That being said, who knows.
Thats partially true. Look at last nights patch, how much scaling was that. Mostly bug fixes. Open beta is about bug fixes and yes they do some scaling.
Emergency Maintenance 1/21 (January 21, 2010)
Star Trek Online is currently down for emergency maintenance. We are expecting this downtime to last no more than 2 hours, starting at 6:30PM PST. Upon completion of the maintenance, this message will be updated accordingly.
Yeah seriously I just had to sit through a 4 hour chamber of commerce banquet after a 10 hour work day and all I could think about during the stupid banquet was coming home to play STO.
SONOFA!
Lol and I skipped my Chamber meeting to come home early yesterday to play
I probably wouldnt be half so annoyed if I didn't pay for the privilege of beta testing. However, I'd be lying if I siad the beta was the only reason I pre-ordered. I plan on eventually subscribing to the game. After I am done with mass effect 2.
One thing though, I really hope that this patch schedule isnt what they are planning on doing when the game is released. Every single time the server is taken down around the time I want to log on :P
Actually, no matter how you see it, you paid for the privilege of playing the game. Open Beta access was an incentive offered to entice you to buy, and play, the game.
Or to put it another way:
If what you paid for was open beta, then you'd have no expectation, or intention of playing the released game.
This is Beta, not the final product, people. I'm a little tired of seeing forum posts and chats ingame whining and complaining about the game. Beta! For us to play, to find and report the bugs and to make suggestions, not to complain about server downtime or how one might not like the game. I tip my hat off to the techs/GM's who are working on this project. They've been working hard to polish this game and doing a great job at it. I've notived their improvements ingame. Yes, there are still some bugs, but they're getting to them. I'm impressed with their speed at addressing the issues, very quick. After reading alot of different threads in different rooms on these forums, I would say many of you would might think that you would make a good captain, but would make terrible morale officers. Cryptic, you're doing a wonderful job thus far, keep it up. Thank you.

i "just" finished the rator mision.. i mean literaly jumped to sector space and turned it in about 20 secs before the server went down..
Unfortunately, I didn't ...I was right in the middle of a mission when they gave the five minute warning. Really guys, how about some consideration? I am all for fixing the errors but how about posting a planned shutdown on the logon page say a day before or at least a couple hours before and giving everyone already online an hours notice rather than 5 minutes? I really don't think it is too much to ask and I am sure that everyone here will appreciate the extra notice so we don't get cut off in the middle of a mission.

I hate you and Picard was the better captain.
So much for my calculations. If that is added, my calculations for the average human liver goes to about 5 minutes of survival...
