Beta is beta. Test it when it's up and shut your cakehole when it's not while they work on fixing things. That's the reason for it, not so you can enjoy yourself.
Enjoying yourself comes with playing/testing the game, but i agree if the servers are down, best believe its for good reason, keep it up cryptic, at this rate the downtime after launch will be minimal
If this is the time they're going to maintain after launch, I'm not going to play, literally, even if I pay for a subscription.
Please tell me you don't seriously think an MMO publisher is going to bring down their program after launch for 3 hours a day, every day, during one of their highest usage periods.
Even EVE Online, which has one of the heftier server maintenances of any game I've ever played, only brings the server down one hour a day and it's during a time of lowest usage.
Star Trek Online is currently down for a brief maintenance period. We are expecting this downtime to last no more than 3 hours. Upon completion of the maintenance, this message will be updated accordingly.
I think something breaks in their servers and it sends an error message to our client causing it to crash. As we see mass crashes of clients... you know the game crashes to desktop then you get that error report box. Yeah, that's happening to a lot of people at the same time.
Don't You Realize This Is Peak Hours Of Playing Time For People Getting Off Work!!
So to all the people *****ing about prime time maintenance....
You most likely do not work in the 3d graphics / game design field or work for a game company. During crunch time, you know... the last couple of weeks until release, the company will do everything it can to get the game done and ready for release (IE: Taking the servers down to put up new fixes for games)
So... Stop *****ing / QQ'ing / Being Emo and just wait.
If these are truly emergencies, they are too frequent just 8 days before launch IMHO.
If they are really just pushing today's updates, it would be more considerate to the players to stagger them. We did spend money for access to this open beta, but yes it is a beta so we shouldn't expect it to be fully operational.
Tonight's message didn't and doesn't say anything about "emergency".
First Contact is on Sci-Fi, atleast something good is on to watch to pass the time.
Your definition of "something good" intrigues me - it's opposite what I normally think when I hear that phrase... unless you actually LIKED that movie, in which case, I got nothin'.
Just my 2 creds worth... The game is STILL technically beta, they may have unlocked everything, but that is so we can test it to Destruction <---- notice the word? If we don't break it, we aren't doing our jobs... we break it, then they try to fix it so we can't break it again... sometimes one fix exposes another weakness that needs fixed and therefore breaks again... they need to take all the Emergency Maintenance" times they can get now before it goes retail. Respect to the devs and programmers for stocking up on Red Bulls or whatever their particular poison is and working long and hard to try to get everything right before the 2nd... Been there, guys. Good Luck.
#2, the problems they are fixing might just be tied to the heavy load during the prime hours, as such warrants a fix as fast as possible to get the servers back up to get the load back on the server to test the fixes.
#3, it is FREE BETA.. you are not paying for it and they are not paying you to play. This is the time they use (Beta) to fix and troubleshoot the game. Downtime is to be expected frequently as fixes are made and implimented and tested.
#4, the Beta Test is to check for problems and bugs to get fixed, not for people to unwind and play casually when getting off of work. That is what Live servers are for Starting Feb. 3, 2010 (or head start).
So your saying that those of us that have jobs to support our families are just casual players? The devs should listen to only those players that can devote 24/7 to play testing.
Looks like it's gonna be another late night hitting refresh on this thread, waiting for the servers to come back up, then staying up way too late to log some actual game time. It's worth it.
heh I can relate there. Three levels from the next tier ship. I swear, I am just trying them out! Its not like I try to level on purpose or anything! (then again the best leveling is when you're having fun and not watching the xp bar!)
Just like some have said, in not so many words, all this down time is going to make the game better when it actually drops, and then a few months down the road gameplay will be alot better. I for one am hoping they're working on adding some wd-40 to ground combat controls...

It isn't "technically" in beta; it is literally in beta.
I think flaming those who complain about downtime is not needed, basically if its prime time in the US (I as well am EST and got 10mins of gameplay in before maintenance) its prime time somewhere else in the world at any other given time of day, basically, doesnt matter when the servers go down its gonna be during someones prime time, all we can do is sit, wait, and watch a burrito transform into a bean and back to a burrito b4 it hits the spacial ground and splatters all over space, lol
I absolutely loved the Voyager series finale. I may get shot for this, but personally I thought it was best of all of them. TNG's was good, but kind of random per se in the big scheme of things. Voyager's ending had meaning. It actually brought the series to a close. The only thing I wasn't pleased with was having no insight as to what took place after they reached earth. That really bothered me. The final season of Voyager in general was quite awesome if you ask me.
Ummm... Actually, The last 2 episodes did bring the series back to the begining. Remember that Q said at the end of encounter at farpoint that we had seven years to prove our worth. The trial was over, not very random at all IMO
You do realize that is what he was saying right? He was attacking a person who was "hoping they weren't going to do this maintenence during this time after laucnh". Read before replying :P
Why in gods name is it at prime time? dont you guys work during the day?
ROFLMAO.
Yup think that about sums up over 1/2 of what were all thinking...
(The other half is overseas, so they dont care, its in early morning for them right now.)
Hmmmm maybe Cryptic isnt an American company, maybe there secretly British.
Man I gotta get better hours for my job, seems every time the servers go down is right around the time I get home and am ready to play...oh wells, the head start isn't to far off now and then everything will be gravy. Hopefully.
*yawn* Burrito has been tested...gonna beta test my Sleep Number mattress, now.
Until then...
1. Yes, everyone knows it's Beta...we have more than enough forum Melvins reminding us...
2. Still, prime-time downtimes suck...
3. BUT, It sucks because players are digging the game...and WANT MORE
More players digging the game = more moolah for Cryptic = Game lives long and prospers
So, quit being 'that guy' on the forums, nobody needs a hall monitor. We know whose servers they are, who can pull it down and when, and sadly...20 other people have already noted that this is beta as I typed this....
For you who have animosity for the impatient-types, just secretly enjoy their whining, it mean that they're already addicted...and when that happens in beta, it's a good indicator that we're not seeing another Tabula Rasa.
G'nite folks...have a blast when the servers come back up

I just got the game installed after watching my friend play. Installed all the patches, and called out from an appointment I had tomorrow morning... then they have 3 hour maintenance.
I'm not a Trekkie. I was giving this game a shot... and it crapped on me. lol

Ah but it did, that thread got deleted almost right away, they changed it from emergency to brief.
