If your video card/GPU overheats when at 100% load, then you have issues not related to the game. Of course you can reduce graphics settings and set vertical sync to reduce load on your GPU to help, but you still have a problem with hardware, and your GPU/video card would fail when stress testing with other software..
Well I must say that I have never had a heat issue with my PC until Headstart. The game ran before at a steady 60-70c in game when OB was running and now its hitting 100c
I hate to use other games as examples but I think its important. I have been playing Mass Effect 2 with everything on high and forced max AAA/AF and I think we will all agree that the GFX in ME2 are 100 times better than anything in STO.
Anyway with ME2 it never breaches 70c/100% GPU even after 5 hours of continuous play. Same with Venetica. Although not as taxing, Its still a new game. Modern Warfare 2 70c max and 100% GPU.
The cards new. A ATI 5770 1GB. I have checked it for dust and used compressed air. I have 8 fans inside my PC and its in a Cellar with central heating off, I'm in the UK (Cold). Idle temps are about 28-32 for the card with 0% fan running on the card.
I have used and worked with computers for over 30 years and never have I known a game to do this unless there's been something wrong at my end like bad air flow or dust. This time I have checked everything and there seems to be nothing wrong with my computer. I even use smoke to check airflow, I am that concerned about heat.
Oh I have tried limiting my Frame rate down to 60fps and I still get the same issue. I think something been altered in one of the patches that's been released since OB because a 30c increases in temps wouldn't happen to a computer over a few days even if dust was the culprit which it isn't.
I doubted a few people before but tried to help, Thats the way I am So sorry to the people I doubted. Wont be playing again until they sort it out. Will play Mass Effect 2 and Venetica instead
This was me yesterday. Called up a friend and took his old failed 8800 and baked it in the oven at 385 degrees for 8 minutes. Threw it in my comp and it works. My 8800 is still awaiting a warranty inquiry on monday morning.
I barely believe anything thats going on in these forums. Can software kill hardware? Can you bake computer components till they work again?

I had to bake my 8800 GTX at 200F for 10 minutes. That worked for a couple days and then it started artefacting again. Card worked fine for two years with every game that had come out, (any major graphically intensive one) and yes an application can kill hardware. Of course all these know it all techies will say no but I'm a know it all techie and computers are half voodoo and half technology when you really get down to it.
People making the quantum chip currently say "they don't know how they got it to work, but it works".
Man, i have the 5770 ATI as well and it spikes hard during game play. It crashed on me twice (after about 45min of gameplay). the card is new, the rig is new. only about four days old as of this posting. it's a high air flow case. the card is the only thing that gets hot under this game. everything else is fine. i get no problems on other games. Also, when alt-tabbing out to check temps, it drops 30C rapidly. i can watch it go down.
Mine too drops down from almost 100 to 40s in like 3 seconds so I for 1 doubt its airflow and 2 doubt its the card. If it was the fan, dust or faulty card/thermal paste then it wouldn't drop so fast!
its not his card its the game a solution has been found and tested. At this point saying its cooling or something is like refusing to believe the world is round. I know people want a successful launch but not telling people the truth just so they play the game is wrong to me. I got this computer last march it has plenty of cooling and stays clean i have no heat issues on any other game and i have monitored it with rivatuner. dude i used rivatuner pushed up t0 100%. I tried everything in the world for like 2 days and could only run on min specs and was getting temps of 100+ celsius in less then 20 mins. Heard about the /maxfps fix and it cleared everything up. I can now run at max no heat issues.

Even 'your' solution of limiting the FPS, proves that STO is not the problem. What it proves is that the card the person has can not handle full load. With your logic it proves a fault with the card.
What you have is not proof.
Actually there are people that have fixed the problem by increasing their fan. There are people who replaced their card, and no longer have the problem (thats bad hardware BTW).
Use a program to increase the GPU fan speed. There keystrokes.
Use a program to decrease the GPU clock speeds for STO. There keystrokes.
I am sorry can not handle the truth. The fact is the GPU cooling system is designed to keep the card functional under full load. This is a fact. Another fact is that STO can not make the card run more than 100% load, thats is just an impossibility.
So lets walk through this. The card cooling is designed so that it should keep the card functional, under the chip manufacturers thermal spec, under full load. If under full load, like with STO, if the card overheats, then the card is not working as designed.
Its not rocket science.

Your solution to limit the FPS does what? It limits the load to the GPU. What does this tell us? That the load to the GPU is causing a problem. What problem? Over heating.
How do you get rid of heat? Cooling.
Your solution works, no one said otherwise, but it does not effect the root cause.
The only thing we are arguing about is what the cause is. You claim it is STO, but you have no proof. Limiting the FPS is not proof. Why is it not proof? Because correlation does not equal causation.
How can Cryptic cause the card to produce more heat than it is designed to? Answer me that.
BTW, although I dont work on GPU's, I do work in the semiconductor industry. You can talk until you are blue in the face, you wont convince me, and you can never prove you are right.

My answer does fix it. Guarantee it. Increase the fan speed, lower your frequency, I guarantee you it will decrease the temps.

Ffunny how it only seemed to be with STO. Bro please stop youre wrong i have proven it must you really go on. I got this computer last march it has plenty of cooling and stays clean i have no heat issues on any other game and i have monitored it with rivatuner. Give up bro u have no answer for why only STO overheats it. Answer that and then maybe your on my level until then youre dodging the 2 main facts.
The command fixed it INGAME and only STO has issue. Anyone can see that its STO when you only have problems on STO its obvious its the game. I think you just cant stand that someone else is right and you were proven wrong.
All the people who read this try his "cooling" solution and then try the command and see which one works. OAnd use rivatuner on other games that require even more resources then post the results just to drive home the fact that its STO.
The other answer is that at exactly the same moment on the same game and only this game all these people had bad cooling. IDK maybe STO has a secret talk with fans and it gets everyones all hot and bothered.
The fact remains you will rant and rant but NEVER even attempt to answer why its only STO and probably wont takemy bet to see whos solution works. And honestly it wasnt even my solution someone else who had the SAME problem posted it. Oh wait we both must have bad fans and cooling only for STO.
Something tells me you will go away because you cant answer the question why only low resource STO causes this issue and nothing else. Nor will you tell people who are experiencing it to go and try the command. And why would you not tell people to even try it? Because you desperately want a good launch and who cares if it fries ppls cards as long as you can play and have large server populations.

dude i used rivatuner pushed up t0 100%. I tried everything in the world for like 2 days and could only run on min specs and was getting temps of 100+ celsius in less then 20 mins. Heard about the /maxfps fix and it cleared everything up. I can now run at max no heat issues.
