    I noticed that winetricks nowadays has these options:
    fontsmooth-bgr Enables subpixel smoothing for BGR LCDs
    fontsmooth-disable Disables font smoothing
    fontsmooth-gray Enables grayscale font smoothing
    fontsmooth-rgb Enables subpixel smoothing for RGB LCDs

    Unfortunately the only useful one seemed to be the fontsmooth-disable which made the game a bit faster. :D

    I suppose the last problem is the font, what font does STO use so I can try and find a better version?

    Just out of curiosity, you did have libpulse-dev installed to your system? Or did it really fail compiling? Just because I think I had no complaints on pulseaudio compilation after I installed libpulse-dev also.

    This is a 64-bit system, there are no 32-bit libpulse packages in Debian. But I don't want pulse anyway, I only use alsa.

    Ok, my system is a x86_64 Ubuntu but perhaps it's a difference between Ubuntu and Debian. Before I installed libpulse-dev configure said that wine won't compile with pulseaudio support but after installing libpulse-dev onto the system it didn't complain no more about that.

    Reporting SUCCESS on:
    Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic
    Intel quad Q9400
    2.5G DDR2 RAM
    Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTO

    sound operational through the library override
    graphics clean with /renderscale .999

    Cryptic, you got yourself another customer. :)

    Yup, looks promising enough to be a lifetime customer to Cryptic with STO. :)

    That's my second lifetime MMORPG then. Now I can have good fantasy time with LotRO on Linux and hopefully be able to play STO as well on Linux as LotRO has worked thus far and enjoy the definitive Science fiction setting.

    Thanks a lot to everyone in getting things rolling for playing the game on our platforms.

    I do have to admit that I wait what Crossover Games 9.0 brings us.
    A quote from Jeremy White's blog entry - The Road Map for 2010:
    After we ship CrossOver 9, we'll quickly ship CrossOver Games 9, which will have the same core engine and updates to a variety of games. We're hoping the new system will enable us to more cleanly support Lord of The Rings Online, and we're looking to improve support for Modern Warfare 2, and perhaps some titles such as the upcoming Star Trek Online.

    Wouldn't mind using crossover games for both of these games if they truly bring us native usability.

    Everything runs rather good, but I would like to be able to run it with more fps. the lower my settings are the lower FPS i get. Im on a nvidia 260 GTX 879 ram or something like that. i got 4g ram, and a amd 5200 x2.

    AMD/Ati just released Catalyst 10.1 Linux driver, perhaps that helps things for you.

    I hope sow, the sound issue i hope get a better more efficient solution. In the future i hope for official WINE support to STO (hopefully gold to platinum level, http://appdb.winehq.org/help/?sTopic=maintainer_ratings) to have STO certified ofr WINE 1.2 when it has comme. OpenGL support sould be doeble, i dont think PS3 uses DirectX as Xbox360 can.

    Finally I found the solution for my keyboard repeating problem.

    xset -r causes loss of control of keyboard

    Especially comment number 19 and 20 had the fix location for the problem, though 19 had the wrong command etc. :D

    So, what I did was:
    1. Fire up gconf-editor
    2. Browse to apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/a11y-keyboard
    3. Uncheck checkbox named "active"

    I think this might be a problem with evdev handled USB keyboards.

    This Card is much better when it comes to derives for Ubuntu 64bit. Now it works but not whit /renderscale whits i don't need any longer to change. What wold be good settings for this card in STO and WINE?

    in my Mac Version thread... Coderanger posted that they are working on something... that will help in the /renderscale thing...

    I'm going to assume they are going to make like a slider bar so you can choose and save setting for a render scale, since their current option is just 50% or 100% ... but we don;t know yet what its realyl going to be. Whatever it is, it will be nice...

    I have noticed, i played for like 12 hours straight (I know I know... shhh) and it never forgot the /renderscale 1.001 setting until I logged (crashed) off... where in beta it did it like every 4 or 5 loading screens.

    Have you installed already the nvidia ppa drivers by the way?

    Did that myself and got a huge graphics boost. Don't know why it took me that long to ditch those provided with the distribution. ;)

    THE COMMANDS BELOW ARE NOT FOR THE FAINTHEARTED... Remember I warned you. You can get your system pretty messed up if you fail at this. openssh-server package is nice to install first and have another machine closeby, like a laptop with ssh client software. :D
    Should you fail with some commands, seek help from people online and do not reboot or logout until all nvidia 195 packages are happily installed or someone has helped you back to nvidia 185.

    On Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 I had to do the following to get nvidia ppa repository working.

    $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa

    After this I needed to run the update-manager gui to run a partial upgrade and after that I got down to really upgrading the drivers from nvidia 185 to nvidia 195.
    $ sudo apt-get install nvidia-195-modaliases nvidia-glx-195 nvidia-settings

    The previous command will fail but no worries though. Continue with the commands below and you'll be happily on nvidia 195 drivers.
    $ sudo dpkg-divert --remove --rename --package nvidia-glx-185 --divert /usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.1.xlibmesa /usr/lib/libGL.so.1

    Finish the job by installing the software really:
    $ sudo apt-get install nvidia-195-modaliases nvidia-glx-195 nvidia-settings

    And after a reboot you should be happily using nvidia 195 drivers.

    But like I said, the nvidia-glx-185 package has horrendous problems in uninstallation scripts or something, it can really mess up your system. :( Hopefully this will be fixed sooner or later to be easier to do...

    At CodeWeavers, we've been doing a lot of work on Wine to get STO to work on Wine. There are instructions at winehq.org to do it with Wine. We've also put up a build of CrossOver Games that will make it easy to install and run:

    Very cool Jeremy!

    Can't wait for the stable version that does not break the other stuff. ;) Unfortunately Left4Dead 1 and 2 are games that I enjoy at times. Who doesn't love a bit of zombie annihilation after a hard day at work in a cubicle? ;)

    When STO is running whit WINE for example in ubuntu 64bit ist it common to have slow grapicks, that is slow in flow to. when it turn character int almost hacks a bit instead of being smooth. Like hang up abit, i dont think its sow much of hardware prestanda problem more of a bug/glitch in software. I have had duplicate grahichs curruption when my officer is at earth Space Dock.

    A few years ago I bought CX Linux when there was a promotion for TrialPay (or something like that). I ended up signing up for some fairly good (but expensive) coffee for a month or two, and got CX Linux in exchange.

    That since expired.

    I always knew that CrossOver was doing great things for Wine, and that eventually your engineers work hard enough to get the most popular things supported.

    When I read your post, and your blog, I couldn't help but spring for a new license of CX Games. Even if the unsupported build doesn't work, you guys have got my support. Thanks for using your Trekkie-motivation to help us out. :D

    I have built packages for openSUSE 11.2
    download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/lanceinman/openSUSE_11.2

    It is the wine hacks git + the 2 patches. Pulseaudio is supported also.

    Now if I could ever get past "Connecting to the account server..." to actually test out performance.

    As Ubuntu defaults to running with compiz enabled, I guess you did disable it?
    System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects -> None

    Compiz might look cool but it's a huge performace hog unfortunately so often while playing it's better to turn it off. Even Windows Vista disables Aero when starting certain games. ;)

    Only thing that comes to my mind quickly that caused huge performance loss for myself.

    I'm trying the special build of Crossover, it's quite effective indeed. Sound works even without disabling mmdevapi (but I still did it on second try as sound got killed on the computer after exiting game the first time).
    The graphic corruption in map space is still there, but any tweak of /renderscale solves it throughout the game.
    I tried adding mine to the gameprefs.pref file but no change, maybe because it already has a renderscaleX and renderscaleY value to take care of. If anybody tries toying with that , please keep me posted.

    The launcher for STO thats used on "Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista / Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit)" (quote from http://startrekonline.com/faq#19). I think that should be in the system requirements info if its dependent on INTERNET Explorer and why? How ever i dos not seem to require Internet explorer 6 or later to run the game-client.
    An other solution for launcher/patching should solve this and maybe a even for Windows user. This WINE testing and running is good for STO. I think if the cryptic engine runs on other platforms there must be other ways to solve launch/patching issue. I doubt that SP3 uses Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.1 or later for patching and updating system.
