Turning on anti-aliasing also makes it go away for me, although it doesn't visually look like its actually turning on.

I haven;t found a way on Mac OS X yet to enable AA... its still always grayed out in STO.... X in OSX uses a passthrough type driver system to the main OS, it doesn't have a specific driver just for X, so it leads to issues like this often.... hopefully that will be an answer if I can get it to work. thanks!

Worked for me nicely, though just for the heck of it, I tried setting "/renderscale 2" and the problem kept away also then... Also the graphics were crispier. :) Can't find yet any place where I would have a problem with this setting. :)

awesome.. I never even thought about going over 100% ...

it actualyl works.. its not a bug.. it does rendering at higher, and .... it gets a better picture and slower the higehr you go...

i ben running at 1.001 .. which fixes and and looks fine... 1.5 looks better... 2 looks even better... but it gets kinda slow on my frame rates.

Well, kept trying to find my limits which turned out to be /renderscale 4. 3 worked still for my card. At 4 I got a complaint that I ran out of graphics mem. :)

Luckily the setting didn't remain in the game. :D I get nice graphics with keeping the recommended set for video settings and additionally typing /renderscale 2.

Now, just 4 things left that I'd like to work:
    1. Patcher/Launcher has issues that come out as Internet Explorer Scripting Errors
    2. Would still like to hear sounds...
    3. Directional controls are giving me troubles. That xset r off did not work for me as I mentioned earlier...
    4. What fonts do I need to install so that texts look better?

Well, actually the directional controls work from time to time okayish, but not all the time. I am be able to walk around perfectly if I push w and q simultaneously to start moving but if I push only w then I run for a bit and then start quivering and progressing inch by inch... Same thing for all directional controls, if I push 2 simultaneously it just works but pushing only one key at a time doesn't. Seems that I don't any more get the rolling around effect myself. :)

well I don't have the first two problems at all, so not sure I can help with those...

but I've been working on a lot of things with the Fonts, and the log in/patcher screen issues... but no real luck yet.

My sound issue could of course be some audio setting in winecfg that I don't have set the right way. Could someone who has sounds on Ubuntu say what they have set in the Audio tab of winecfg and if there is something else in addition?

mmdevapi=disabled allowed me to get sound!

BTW for those of you that 'xset r off' doesn't work, make sure you type that in a linux terminal, and NOT in the ingame chat!

I also get decent framerates (30-40fps) with the quality set to recommended, and by turning reflection quality, and lighting quality to LOW.

The registry settings for wine didn't make the graphics corruptions go away completely, but it appaeared to reduce how often it happens, haven't tried the renderscale settings yet.

I do get occasional crashes though (it crashed 3 times today I think), once in Earth spacedock before talking to a vendor, once during an away mission (doing nothing special, just looking around). Right before the crash the game freezes, then it exits and the crash dialog appears. I do get ticket numbers, so I submitted a few.

i got occasional crashes too... but with renderscale on to any setting... the grpahics work good and I havent crashed yet.

it appears the renderscale optoin resets itself everytime you log off... so I just set up a key bind to do it for me

i wasn't using the ' key for anything.. so I did

    /bind ' renderscale 1.001

so when i log in i can hit it and be fixed... (or i can hit it quick when I forget and see the problem)

I wonder if there is a command we can send from the log in screen to set this every time? its not a big deal if you already make a bunch of key binds and save them to a txt file and load them every time.

oh, and for the Log in screen problems.. I've found IE7 works slightly better in some ways than IE6. It looks better, but I get a weird blank pop up at the front... and the "patch" button doesn't change to "engage" but other than that it works nicely.

mmdevapi=disabled allowed me to get sound!

Okay, so you have the defaults in Audio tab of winecfg set. Only ALSA enabled?

Yup, fired it away in a terminal naturally. Like I said earlier, it causes my X to repeat RETURN key all the time and doesn't help me with controlling my characters at all.... :-(

renderscale is a graphic fix you type in the game once its loaded... if you cannot get the game to load all the way in, your having other issues.

turn off glsl in the wine registry.... it works for some people but on Mac OS X, it crashes STO when its enabled, and it works fine with it disabled.

basically run regedit, go in to Current user -> software - > wine - > Direct3D

    create a string called
    UseGLSL
    and set it to
    disabled

if the Direct3D entry isn't under Wine, you can create it.

"Half Resolution" is a setting in the game that sets your renderscale to 0.5 (or 50%)... we use the command to manually set it to higher numbers, since we found the 50% thing fixed the graphic bug.

Nice, winetrics installing ie7 instead of ie6 seems to fix that continuous nagging at the launcher, though the buttons don't get updated to correct content. Like the server up or down indicator is showing down even it's up. :D

Must have done something wrong in the winecfg myself on the earlier try, now I got sound too when I re-entered the mmdevapi and set the value to disabled and set the sound output to ALSA again. :)

EDIT: Okay, the server was really down. :D "Server Status: Undergoing Maintenance"

Guess that's my moment to head to bed and see more in the morning.

2 things off my list though, sound issue gone and launcher issues less troubling. Now just that movement controlling left...

    [\QUOTE]

Yes, thats right. I fired up winecfg, went to audio tab, it autoselected/enabled ALSA, I clicked apply, OK.
Also added mmdevapi=disabled on the Libraries tab.

BTW building the pulse driver for wine failed, so its not installed. So make sure you have alsa selected, and not pulse there.

That is strange, my X doesn't repeat any keys with 'xset r off'. Try pressing a key (return if that is what you have trouble with) in X, before entering the game, and see how it behaves. It should only output one character, regardless how long you press it. I am using Xorg 7.5.

Reporting SUCCESS on my Macbook Pro ATI X1600 with 2 gigs of Ram using Doh123's Wine download. Created a dude, played up through the borg cube fighting mission. Game works great and smoothest at 1024X768 resolution.

Thanks everyone and Cryptic team members.

Tried it already but didn't help. I really don't want to keep trying that command as the command really puts my RETURN key stuck at firing away all the time. :( It takes quite a while to get the command xset r on run again as everything that I put my mouse onto starts getting the CRLF treatment full time. :(

    Karmic xorg is version 7.4+3ubuntu10.

    Regarding keyboard settings:
    Section "InputDevice"
    # generated from default
    Identifier "Keyboard0"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "fi"
    EndSection

Any suggestions if there could be my problems? :) And no, not switching away from Finnish keyboard :D

BTW building the pulse driver for wine failed, so its not installed. So make sure you have alsa selected, and not pulse there.

Just out of curiosity, you did have libpulse-dev installed to your system? Or did it really fail compiling? Just because I think I had no complaints on pulseaudio compilation after I installed libpulse-dev also.

    Hi all,

My attention was brought to this thread recently, and it's encouraging to see so much interest in getting STO running on other platforms besides Windows. I have been poking around lately with getting the Cryptic engine running under WINE, and thanks to some joint work with CodeWeavers it's looking like full support is just around the corner.

In fact, last night I was able to log into the beta and play for an hour using a lightly modified version of the wine/hacks branch under Ubuntu. Any of you who are reasonably tech-savvy should be able to test my solution:

    1. Get the wine/hacks branch from http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/hacks.git
    2. Get the following patches from http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21401: (kindly provided by Jeremy White)
    - "Hack to work around issue with GetProcessMemoryInfo"
    - "Patch to address failure in GetCurrentDirectoryA with 0x10000 sized buffers."
    3. Build & install.
    4. Run winetricks ie6
    5. Run the launcher, patch up and go!

Please report your level of success here.

I want to thank the nice Cryptic Studios Teamers and CodeWeaversers that have have ingade in this issue block. I alsow want to reconse the eforts by WINE users and STO plyers that want to use Linux/GNU and MAC OS X for plaing STO. Solving problems whit this can help i hope solve som of the 64bit windoews prblems as well. I you run a 64bit system like WinXP 64bit as well as ubuntu 64bit whit WINE (recmmanden WINE hacks whit paches) you can get the grapics recotionsen by game clinet problem. I have it whit my Radeon HD 3870 for bofh ATI Catalyst™ 9.12 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver (ati-driver-installer-9-12-x86.x86_64.run) and ATI Catalyst™ 9.12 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (9-12_xp64_dd_ccc_enu.exe). I think ist has some thin to do whit running 32bit Windows programs in a 64 bit OS. how to reach ATI support efectivly? I think they shuold know about this issue.

There's actually an interesting thing with sound working now. I had really smooth graphics without sounds. Once they are enabled via the mmdevapi=disabled, the graphics are no longer that smooth. Now I'm pretty sure that adding sounds should not take that much cpu time.

As I do not know wine interiors that well this make me ask the question if mmdevapi is something central to sound system hardware utilization? Or what is mmdevapi used for?

Or could this be of the 64bit problem I had with compiling wine at the mpg123_feedseek that I had to change to mpg123_feedseek_64 in dlls/winemp3.acm/mpegl3.c?

EDIT: Tried without mpg123-dev in the system and my personal feeling is that the game was even slower that way... Recompiling back to a version with mpgg123-dev and mpg123_feedseek_64 modified to dlls/winemp3.acm/mpegl3.c.

I found out about the beta a few days ago via starslip.com and did the routine "does this work under wine" google. Seeing a thread with even one dev posting it made my day and I had to give it a go. My laptop was too underpowered and the server downtime made it a pain to get it on the regular box today but once I got the patch done I had several hours of no-problem play.

I did have to do /renderscale a few times even in the same game... I wonder if the value matters at all there or if it just kicks something internally. /renderscale 1 might even work as well as anything.

mmdevapi=disabled allowed me to get sound!

Following these instructions I have STO working what I would consider as well as under Windows.

    Q6600 @ 2.7ghz
    8GB DDR2 @900mhz
    nVidia GTX260 Core BE
    Debian Squeeze "testing" AMD64
    nVidia driver: 190.53

I had some minor sound and grathics issues, as well as problems with the launcher, but I rechecked the output of ./configour and found I was missing some X11 dev lib's, with them install, and IE7 via winetricks everything is great

Font is still a bit iffy, but apart from that is prefect.

If anyone is having problems checking out and patching WINE via git i would be happy to upload a snapshot.
