And the 8800 GT is faster than the 7950. What's your point?
Regardless, if you took any bit of time to read this thread you'd see that we already talked about that to great lengths. But thanks for confirming that for community members as well.
...we all know that the 8800 is faster than the 7950 (at least I hope so )
My point was that the old ATi card is not even mentioned as supported and it works pretty well.
Also, both CPU's I have are low-end and even the old P4 is running STo without too much trouble...

I run the game on max settings, and in space it works beautifully. However, on the ground, I sometimes get this hiccuping when I move. Not rubberbanding, but like things aren't streaming through memory properly. I tried turning down the settings but it doesn't seem to stop the problem, and moreover, I have to change them back immediately when I go into space

Since you have a GTX 260, turn off anti-aliasing. Also, I disable high lightning on mine since it's a huge performance hit (even on a GTX 295). But others with a GTS 250 reported disabling ambient occlusion helped.
There are some problems with anti-aliasing in STO, specifically with ground combat and NVIDIA cards. Worse for ATI, as AA has even more severe issues. Another disabled depth of field and set shadows to low.

There's also a thread suggesting that stuttering can be solved by rolling back your displays drivers to 190.62.
That until Cryptic resolves the problem with newer drivers.
I'm glad those settings helped, but that's still not normal for a GTS 250. I don't know what else might be wrong without being at your PC. What framerate do you get in other games? I assume it's a lot higher.
I don't have much of anything else installed at the moment. I should probably test my video card on another game to make sure it's up to the task.
But i'm sure Cryptic needs to tune the engine and it will eventually be better.
anyone know if a Visiontek "Black Box" ATI HD2600Pro 256MB AGP-Express Video Card will run this game better then my nvieda 7300 GT?
The 2600 Pro has a small edge there in performance. It doesn't matter what the brand is or the branding's name, etc. The ATI and NVIDIA reference models make the difference.

I can verify that the 190.62 fix the stuttering problem. I can now run on the station.
i have one pc that has a geforce 6150se nForce 430 with 793 mb memory any idea if that will run the game never heard of it so i have no idea if it will or not also has a AMD Semprom Processor LE-1250 also never heard of it so i have no idea if this pc can run it porb not as its a home pc and not a gaming pc also has 2gb ram

I have a single core Athlon 64 3500+ and I can't load space at all. Once I finish the ground portion of the tutorial I just get faced with a never-ending load. Had to shell out for a dual core proc. I'm surprised that your P4 could load space.

I was wondering if there was a Joystick out there I could buy to use with this game. I am not good with the keyboard and mouse. I am not a big gamer, but I love Star Trek and would love to play this game. I am playing the Bata but I am having a difficult time with the controls.

I didn't begin to embrace using (QE)WASD for flight controls until last night. WOW it made a huge difference. You just can't keep up trying to "mouse" everything.
Typically, in any MMO/RPG I try to use the arrow keys for movement. This with the mouse works great for ground in STO but not ship maneuvers, IMO
I never setup my mouse since I installed W7 RC back in the summer. I'll have to see if I can get STO to pick up my other wheel & buttons, which would be cool to map to the key binding options.

There is no joystick support and for this type of game and you wouldn't want it. Try this instead Logitech G13 game pad. I love it.
The older of our two computers (pentium D 3.0ghz(x2)) runs it just fine at medium-low detail with an 8600GTS. The system "requirements" are far above what you actually need. That processor is by far slower than even a Core solo, letalone a Core 2.
If your computer is 'overheating' from use, you have a different problem. The system cooling should be able to handle as much heat as your CPU can put out.
The problem is that when games call for Dual Core CPUs like STO, many times a single core CPU will run hot and crash the game or worse if overheated.
A buddy of mine just had that happen with Age of Conan.
Since STO specifically calls for a Dual Core at a minimum I expect the same.
You can get fantastic buys on Dual Core Processors and even as MOBO combos these days.
STO isn't going to overheat your core worse than any other game. Even using almost every piece of silicon in your CPU using something like Prime95 will only be a degree or two higher than running any high CPU requiring process such as a video conversion or a game on high settings. If your friend is getting overheats it's not specifically because of the game, it's because he as poor cooling, either the heatsink/fan or the airflow. A properly cooled computer will be impossible to overheat simply because the hardware would be incapable of running any faster and drawing any more current which would cause more heat.
While you can "run" the client on a Pentium 4 (even though it might crash or hiccup at times), the experience is horrible. If you're used to crappy gameplay, then by all means, don't let us stop you.
The minimum specs are set for a reason: so Cryptic doesn't get people with old hardware complaining about how poor STO plays on it.
* OS: Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista / Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit)
* CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz or AMD Athlon X2 3800+
* Memory: 1GB RAM
* Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7950 / ATI Radeon X1800 / Intel HD Graphics
* Sound: DirectX 9.0c Compatible Soundcard
* DirectX: Version 9.0c or Higher
* HDD: 10GB Free Disk Space
* Network: Internet Broadband Connection Required
* Disc: 6X DVD-ROM
Those benchmark programs require you to install their apps. A popup should have launch.

I was actually very surprised at how well it was running on the old p4D. I'd been playing it maxxed out 1080p on my Q9300/GTX260 for a while and set it up on the old computer for comparison. It's definitely playable, i was getting 35fps even with a video card AND processor that are both below the "minimum" in performance, at noticeably above minimum settings, 1680x1050. The only time it really suffered was on a planet with a huge number of characters on screen, at that point we had to drop the character/character texture detail down from 100% to 50%.
To the person asking about 1.6ghz: The clock speed is almost meaningless now anyways, the processor model number is more important.. The only real answer is to download the beta it and try. If you get performance that is acceptable to YOU, you can definitely play it. Running "ok" to someone with a computer like mine might mean something entirely different than someone whose primary computer is like my older machine.

Does this meet the system requirements? This computer can play WOW but i don't know if it can play STO. I downloaded the Open Beta already and when i was on the character creation page/ choose already existing character, the moon was white, the space station thing was black, and my character didnt show up, and when i was playing the graphics looked like they were gliched. Almost as if it was not done loading and it was a brief outline of the object or scene. Only some objects showed up.

It's a combination of both. But the video card is more important.
Thanks for the info. Will look into it.
My system meets all requirements except the CPU, it's only 1.6 ghz total.

I have tried running the above tests, and neither have yet to complete.
I have run DxDiag, which seems to get stuck saving information at about 60%
but this is the gist of my system.
Windows XP Pro SP3 running on
ABit IC7 Max 3 Mainboard
Intel P4 Prescot (might be an Extreme Edition CPU, can't remember) 3.0 GHz with Hyperthreading
2 GB Ram
4x 37 GB Raptors set up as 2 74 GB disks via on board RAID
1x 500 GB PATA (Hitachi Deskstar)
Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra
Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
23" Widescreen Monitor.
Out of all tha, do you think my system would handle STO, because if it doesn't I am looking at a new MB, CPU, RAM, and GFX at bair minimum.
Sound like DX is corrupted. Download.
