What amazes me is that people seem to think this is how it should be.

It amazes me also. I don't get it.

It's all but unplayable as far as I'm concerned. The content of the game cannot accept all player style. The power gap of players is so outrageously wide it's impossible now....there are just waaaay to many moving parts to even consider fixing, or even coming remotely close to it.

I was going to compare it to another Star Trek game released back in 2000, but I won't because not really a fair comparison as it is classified as a real-time strategy game where as this is an MMO. Still, even as an MMO, don't ever recall killing something in 2 seconds or less unless it was a much lower level than myself.
Retired. I'm now in search for that perfect space anomaly.

But, that ship has sailed. They've so thoroughly screwed up the game that there's no real way to get it back to where it ought to be.

Saw plenty of ships get one shoted on DS9.

Now, now, let's not bring Star Trek into this.

    Actually, yes!

Just think about 'The Changling'. Man it would need to throw 450 Photon Torpedoes at the USS Enterprise to knock its Shields down. Spock must have known how ineffective Kinetic damage is against Shields.

I tend to agree with this, as I haven't played any myself.

Also, I find many games still being made to this day, that people have to rely on manuals and wiki or youtube sources, to achieve wins!

But seriously, I see, your problem is not in a gear but in your abilities. Aceton beam is and always was a TRIBBLE, same as eject plasma. If i can advice you, play 2x auxiliary to battery + 3x technician doff. TT1, APB1, BFAW3 ( of course) and if you want that torpedo TS1. EPtW3, eng and sci team, reverse polarity, hazzard emitters (played with aux battery), power levels 1. weapons 2. auxiliary. What on cmdr. eng seat? It is bad but probably directed modulation or warp bubble. Everything on keybind and smash the spacebar! :)

Finally, one video for the inspiration, but this guy has All hands+reciprocity+some super-expensive doffs, so for you is better aux2batt build.

Oh the irony. You show RyanSTO's video for inspiration and at the same time, suggest "Hilbert" spacebar keybind (FYI, that's something Ryan tells NOT to do in multiple videos).

NO PLAYER should have to spend countless hours pouring over the forums or other websites JUST trying to figure out how to play the game they are in LET ALONE played for years...

I agree with you to a point. However, going out to the forums, watching videos, crunching numbers or researching how to maximize one's potential in the game is part of the fun for some of us. It's the same way that car enthusiasts for example would likewise read, discuss or research ways to make their cars run better or improve their own driving outside of actually driving that car.

IMO complexity to an extent adds value to the game. If everything was just spoonfed and you have nothing else to figure out, it would get boring really fast (at least for me it will).

The same is true for other RPGs. Most (if not all) RPGs don't tell you how to do things. It just tells you what x and y does and leaves you to figure out the best path to build your character for example. It's up to the player to either look up stuff on the net and make their toon better or just play through the game with whatever build they made. The same is true for STO in that you can do most of the content in cobbled up builds. Just don't expect to be able to go toe-to-toe with a player that spent time and money to push the limits of their builds.

What the game lacks in my opinion is a built-in way to measure your ship's performance. A map with no cd, no xp and no rewards/loot that mixes the need to defeat NPCs and survive would be nice. The end metric doesn't have to be a DPS number. It can be number of deaths, completion time or kill rates. I think we shouldn't have to rely on third party parsers (as good as they are and the teams behind them) to measure our ship's capabilities.

I believe that over time everyone will find their own way to play it , I personally I have halves of abilities to rotate on a keybind (tactical & power+) and the others I click.

You are definitely right with that one! If peeps say the game is “only” about gear they are wrong. Practice with your abilities and your own experience with the controls and how they work best for you undoubtable remains the other side of the gear story.

DO NOT DO THIS. A sure way to kill your DPS is to do this. Most (if not all) boff abilities will interupt fire cycles for .5 seconds. If you are smashing space bars and activating things unnessarily, you will end up with your fire cycles all messed up and do TRIBBLE damage. If you are going to space bar keybind, it should only be for uptime buffs (like say BFAW, APB, TT)...and even then you don't smash it. Timing is STILL important.

:) - This means that you take it with exaggeration ( not literally ) , of course, that insane hammering the space bar is to the detriment of the case. I still remember pvp , where we had the abilities to save !

I agree with you. In my opinion, none of the ships in-game feel big. they all handle like a speedboat just some have a lot of lead on them so turning takes longer. But there is literally no difference between piloting a shuttle or a Galaxy class in this game.

The one-shotting though is kinda canon, if only to limit expenses but it's on-screen. Ships regularily popped while being hit once, DS9 marked a ridiculous high point of this by literally removing shields from the universe, at first explained by alien weaponry shields couldn't adapt to but later they just went "buck it" and let fleets of ships take single hits and die.

Still, I agree with you. Combat feels nothing like I personally at least would imagine those starships duking it out.

STO cannot inform or guide players how things work. They do not know it themselves, or do you think it was intended the absurd hight of damage? Why was Tau Dewa closed after Delta release? Why did the have to do mayor adjustments to advanced and elite? If the gamemakers did have the right knowledge how all the systems work together and were able to guide you, the player, we would not have the game as it is.

Star Trek DS9 was a fun show in that, for the first time, they showed a Star Trek War. They also messed with the baseline in star trek. First making tiny ships like BoPs, and Defiants able to take on capital ships. Up to that point even in the ToS it was clear that was not the case. In search for spock a undermanned, damaged, battle cruiser was able to cripple a bird of prey. How be it the bird of prey was able to cripple them on the next shot. I believe my point is made. Also up to that point of DS9 no starship on any side was one shotted. This was the first time this was done in DS9. I could go back into the argument again like I did with my other post. I will only say its obvious the balance between player and npc needs looked at, but from all possible perspectives.

most MMOs have classes, MOST MMOs have class specific GEAR that drops when you kill mobs....

    what?

you thought when you log on and create a wizard in a MMO AFTER killing a mob in the nooby zone that staff upgrade you just got would be the SAME DROP if it was a warrior that killed that mob?

    LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not trying to be a jerk about it, just saying that ALL MMO games give guidance

    sto?
    does not.

DC Universe doesn't. Yeah, there's class specific gear, but the game doesn't explain what stats are important. (You'd think that dominance is important for controllers. It's not.) The game doesn't explain what abilities give power over time (the most important controller ability), or that they overwrite, so you really only want one person throwing PoT. The game doesn't explain that powers overwrite (so if you have 2 people in your raid with the same powerset, they might need to adjust what their active abilities are) except when they don't (Sorcery's Circle of Protection stacks, and Soul Wells are complicated).
Two common complaints in the DC fora are
    1) People don't know their roles
    2) There's no tutorial explaining their roles.

And it's quite possible in DC for a healer to get a tank piece (that's character bound) as reward.

You are right. Although any balance pass will likely result in a similar situation we are in now where badly built ships will still fly bad and really well thought-out builds commanded by practiced players will outperform those badly built ships by a margin. Any nerf at this point will hurt the badly built ships more than it would hurt the high-end ones unless they lower the HP of all the mobs (which would bring us back to square one - high end ships face-rolling their way around).

Believe it or not, I think the powercreep is helping the population in general. PUGs these days are getting better (getting close to the PUG quality before failed optionals were removed) because it is easier to build stronger ships even with less than ideal setups. I'd say continue buffing up the underpowered abilities (like cannons, mines and Science/Engineering BOff abilities) and increase the difficulty (damage and skill use, not HP) of enemy NPCs in advanced and elite to compensate for the higher damage ships. At least make it worthwhile (or even a requirement) for these ships to slot skills other than DPS-enhancing abilities to succeed in missions.

You mean like Diablo 2('cause you still haven't named anything)? It had lots of class specific things.... and anyone and everyone could find them and trade them to people that actually used them... or sell them for vendor trash because they couldn't use them.

One thing I did for fun was to make a Sorceress with a sword and shield build. AHAHAHAHAAH!!!!! It's really not a good idea, but it's fun. They actually DO have several buffs which improve your abilities in melee combat... it's not really how they're "meant" to be played though, and the buffs are better used on team mates. It's still fun. :p

Also OP, I highly suggest to make a new thread for help in your build in the Federation Subforum. The General Discussion Forum is the wrong place to have it, but more importantly, it's the busiest of the forums and it can be buried to another page fairly easily.
