First, I also had no idea you could get an AFK penalty in a Red Alert.
I don't think there is. You can't redo the same Red Alert for half an hour or so, but that applies to everyone, regardless of performance.
Yeah, I know that part.
I think the OP is confusing that for an AFK penalty. They did not get an AFK in a Borg Red Alert, that's not possible. I think they just threw that part in to try and hide the overall 'real' point of this thread which is just as Warmaker said. It's just an Anti DPS thread disguised as a player with a genuine problem.
Alright. Well thanks for the debate. It's just me that sucks at this game and have a horrible build even though I worked really hard and even crafted stuff. lol
And the times I do ask for help with my build I'm just met with remarks on how stupid I am.
And no. I did get a penalty, but instead of this being a bash thread. Since you guys have a lot of experience maybe you can help me improve my build and powers? If I post up my build etc. I genuinely don't want this to be a hate thread.

You got that reaction here? on this forum?
If you have, please don't let it discourage you. Most people here are more then happy to help when people ask. I'm sorry if you were met with negativity when asking for help, but that's not normal for this forum.
I have received more help from this forum that I can even count. If you have questions, there are people here that would be happy to help.
Having questions about a video game does not make someone stupid.
Ah yeah that makes sense - she thought she was being penalized when she saw the normal timer.
Kate: once you fight in an RA, you have to wait 30 minutes before you can join the next one for that enemy. You can join a Tholian RA right after Borg and vice versa, but the 30 minute timer starts upon completion. And this applies to to everyone, and it's not a penalty.
And P.S.:
Kate I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess you're not Tactical. A Tac in an escort will always kill things faster than a Eng/Sci can. That's just a fact in this game right now. DPS is king.
The Crystalline Entity is the only space battle I know of that actually rewards teamwork so that healing actually counts toward your reward.
I don't think saying to any player they suck and need to get better is an acceptable or helpful comment in any situation. We all started at the bottom somewhere and worked out way up. And remember that it's all well and good telling someone to attain to your arbitrary acceptable DPS numbers but as power creep continues that number gets higher but the new players are still stuck down the bottom. The sheer enormous void between new players and experienced players is getting ridiculous now to the point that it's now wonder we get threads like this popping up. You cannot expect new players and 30-50K plus players to play in the same yard without some level of conflict between the two developing. Plus a lot of cries for help do get pretty harsh responses, especially if done in game. Even on the forums there's a subculture that exists where max DPS is considered the only acceptable way to play the game.

Please don’t feel that way. We have thousands of players in game which all approach it a bit differently. They all come from different standing and have different means at their disposal.
Just because you’re not the fastest concluder of a Borg red alert does not mean your suck or bad at game or whatever you enjoy doing in STO.
Just please try to understand that STO is a pew pew game for the most part and that peeps try to get good at it. The contend itself cannot be balanced against all players anymore. It’s much too late for that, not if the DPS span between the worst player and the best is 242K DPS or so.
My advice is try to find your place in game where you are happy. When it comes to DPS my place is not on top of the charts and never will be. Mine is where I can contribute enough in matches with players of all kinds of standing for the contend I like to do and that without the feeling that it was too easy or that I have been reduced to the role of a spectator. I don’t know you but I bet it would work for you too.
If you need help, advice or assistance please let me know. I know a lot of helpful guys in game which can, including me.

There is no shortage of Build Help threads on these boards. Guys can get you going the right direction. You'll probably even see people argue with each other about minute details on what they consider is "best" but rest assured, there's a lot of knowledge out there.
Gear plays a good role but it will not be the end-all-be-all definition of a good build. Finding a purpose for that build and making it have synergy is more important because that is your foundation to improve upon.
But I want to stress again: Reading up on the mechanics, abilities, following conversations in various channels, checking threads on various game mechanics is more important than getting a good build. Experiment, try different things. You'll make errors but you'll get better and better as you see how things work or why it failed**. Ask questions. I'm often too proud to ask for help so I ended up reading more on my own over my time in this game.
That was what I meant with "getting into the guts of this game." Gear is secondary to what you know and your knowledge can make a budget build effective in this game.
**
On the "experiment" part of what I said, do it with cheap equipment to see how it works. I wouldn't upgrade until you see it in action and have tweaked the build. Refining a build often means changing things out, hence my suggestion to stay cheap. Nothing more wasteful than upgrading a piece of gear that in the end, is not what your final build needs.
I'm surprised you can actually get an AFK penalty from a Red Alert. I wouldn't understand why the system would be in place in this instance either. There is nothing to be gained from staying AFK apart from a measly handful of marks isn't there? I've been in one where I wasn't able to fire a single shot because I loaded just as the Pickle was dying and didn't get an AFK penalty before. Perhaps this is bugged?

There is no afk penalty for red alerts, only a CD timer of 30mins. upon completion of 1.

Yeah tried this out just now. Flew into a Red Alert and flew around doing nothing for the 4/4 killfest. On the Pickle I fired one shot with a low mark beam from 9kms out (to get the marks). I didn't get an AFK penalty.
Edit: Tried another Red Alert, fired 0 shots (didn't even leave my spawn point) and no AFK penalty. Of course didn't get any reward either but that is to be expected.
Do not be afraid to ask for help. I suck at DPS not going to lie but so many wonderful players have given me great advice on a build its just a matter of getting resources for the game and your ship.

You will be surprised that when you ask questions, how many people will say "Oh it's so easy! I can't believe you haven't figured it out by now." or "You don't know already? Forced to agree, for the most part.
I will, however, say that I think in-game is worse. There often seems to be a general, and frankly unreasonable, attitude toward new players in-game. For one obvious example - ISA - if the optional fails you will quite often see someone spout off with a comment like "you shouldn't be doing Advanced content if you don't know what you're doing". And whilst I fully acknowledge and accept that it is sometimes the result of a player just being plain bad, I am nonetheless always tempted to say (and sometimes do) "you shouldn't be doing PuGs if you want a successful run every time.
The intolerance of new, or inexperienced, players is really quite sad.
Also agreed and I'm no fan of the anti-"n00b"ism either.
The "DPS or GTFO" and the *DPS'ers are evil" groups at their extremes are both toxic. Both groups are as elitist as the groups they accuse of elitism. They are a noisy few that are easy to ignore.
That said, I've asked for help many times before and I still ask a lot of noobish questions. All I have gotten are helpful responses. In my experience, it helps to ask nicely more often than not.
Alright. As the original poster of this thread let me lay out all my cards too you.
I'll try to keep it short and to the point.
This post was an original wtf thread when I witnessed a player destroying Cube's and the Command ship in litteraly 1 shot kills. Then it kinda turned into a DSP bashing thread. But I don't want it to be a bashing thread and it was wrong of me to take it down that avenue.
I've played Star Trek Online on and off since the Beta release. I love Star Trek, I love the gameplay and I love the story line driven missions. I can quote you the lines of dialog in missions but when it comes to understanding how ship builds, powers, buffs etc stack and work out in the field.. I suck hard.
Just lately I started to really focus on my build and I worked hard to get things, craft other things, upgrade my stuff etc. As I played through the story arcs again and again it came to the point. Where I could play through all the missions without being defeated.. Blowing up enemy NPC ships in missions etc was easy as 1-2-3 cake.
Then I tried PVP and PVE. And tried out the red alerts and stuff since I no longer had any new missions to complete and I grew a bit tired of re-playing them.
And now to my suprise my build was horrible, I could not surive for more than a second. I couldn't damage other players shields even before they knocked my hull down to 0. And when I was in that Borg Red Alert working my TRIBBLE off with a few Cube's and that player came and just instantly blew them up... That drove me over the top.
Now I got a notice in the corner of my screen of a 2 hour AFK penalty. I believe this was from the red alert. It could be from the PVE mirror thingy I did earlier? I'm not sure. I noticed it just after the Borg RA.
Now, why this turned into a DPS bash thread? Well the really short and simple answer is that I've tried to play this game since the release and I've honestly always sucked and I don't really have any idea about ship builds. And like mentioned, now I had something that was epic since I was able to defeat NPC's like a breeze and then I was knocked back to square 1.
That is a very repeating factor for me in this game, I keep getting knocked back to square 1.. During my time here since Beta release I've only had a few friends, right now I only got 1 person in my friends list. I've never really been in any fleets as I find it hard to fit in.
I've tried to get help with my ship builds from older friends, people ingame, the forums and reddit.. And sometimes I am given advice on how to improve etc. But the main issue is that no one explains WHY. They just look at my build, tells me I'm stupid and it's horrible. Then they give me a list of things to change without explaining anything.. Then when I show someone new, after I worked hard on changing things. They give me a new version of what's wrong.
For example. I was told to only use Neutronium Armour consoles because that was the best ever setup.. Then someone teached me about how EPS was important so I had to change a lot of stuff again.. And when you more "pro" players in the term of players and builds speak you always use so many abbreviations and I barely understand any of them. And when you ask for more help the players just turn unpatient and mad at you.
And sometimes when you approach more powerful people, you often get bashed out. How bad you are at the game, how much you suck. What a TRIBBLE you are etc.
Now in my head since I've always been knocked back to square 1 even though I've been here since beta. It's a horrible feeling to be here since beta release and most new players just advance past you. And when you team up with someone they are all super powerful and you just sit there and can't do anything.
That's why it turned into a DPS thread, since I was never able to come up to your level in power. The only logic in my head was to bring you all down to mine... lol.
And I am sorry for that. So I ask you, instead of making a DPS hate thread.. Maybe you guys could help me? Seeing you are all better at this than I am. But if you are going to help me.. Please be patient and help to explain, don't use all the abbreviations because I don't understand anything. And don't get mad at me and call me stupid etc.
I don't have any friends in this game, I love the storyline and the missions are no problem for me. But in the social setting. I have no fleet I fit into and whenever I team up.. People are so overpowered that teaming with me for them is more an annoyance. It's like dragging your 10 year old brother to a bachelor party.
I'm sorry I got upset and turned this into a DPS hate thread.. It's just very frustrating to spend and log so many hours in the game without being able to understand anything of the core aspects of something as "simple" as a ship build, while you watch everyone advance past you and mock you in the process...
I'm sorry. So instead of a DPS thread, would anyone like to help me improve? Without all the fancy abbreviations and the short "just get this and this". lol..
It's always good to know some people actually admit that they're wrong but don't you take all the blame for it. You had plenty of help from the other side too.
My first toon was a Klingon, so you can guess I was not around since beta. I just got what I did, found somethings that were helpful and left out those that didn't. I do a bit of experimenting in the battlezones, and often enough save the loadout I used from it.
I have warped out of a few Borg Red Alerts, when I arrive at graveyards instead of battlefields, but I haven't been cursed with seeing a ship that can drop a cube in just one shot. I supposed I have been so far lucky and hope to still be.
There are people here who will help you. There is a forum dedicated to ship builds here, you will probably get the help you need there by starting a thread and asking them to spell it out instead of using the common abbreviations (heck, I don't understand some of them either).
Just ask, post your build and let others see it. You'll get your help
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything.
I'm sorry I got upset and turned this into a DPS hate thread.. don't listen the others; do what you want. this is the only really important thing in game. And don't waste your time in the "dps race"; with only fleet stuff, and rep gears, you can enjoy this game; you just need to upgrade what you need for advanced or elite stfs (and not even for all the stfs)
btw: console with EPS is the current gimmick (only useful if you have a plasmobic leach), next time this will be an other thing.
Oh I got a plasmonic leach thingy and EPS thingies. The EPS thingy was the only real thing someone explained to me. Before when I fired my phasers, my weapons power level used to drop a lot.. Then it would take a bit before it nudged back up. When I upgraded my EPS. My weapons power can stay at full all the time, with a huge green chunk on the top. And I got the plasmonic leach, though I never really noticed a difference in combat.
A good start would be to post your build at stoacademy or Reddit's stobuilds section. State what you intend to do with your ship (how you want to fly it), your goals and how much time and resources you are willing to spend on it.
You may get differing answers so it's also going to be worthwhile to research the mechanics of the stuff they are suggesting and weigh them against your own goals. There are many ways to approach ship building and there is no need for you to limit yourself to the current game "meta" (though it may be easier to go that route).
Getting better at what you want to do in the game will involve a lot of asking around, personal research and patience.
Well how important is crit chance and severity? Because right now mine are at the bottom levels. I tried changing traits and weapons and my skills. But I can only nudge it up like 2....3% from the minimum
crit chance is very important, I'm not able to explain, why it is important,; but you need to have a lot of crit chance. the best way to get crit chance is the spire console (vulnerability locator). you can use also the rom console (from the rep), and there are also the romulan boffs from your embassy (tactical boffs - you can only buy 1 with superior operative-)
seriously every decent builded ship can nearly 1shot cubes on normal difficulty and the command ship in 10 secs isnt hard either lol
oh, look, another epeen raises his hand to be the attention TRIBBLE and ridicule the op...
i dont know what to say about this other then ...lol
i have twinks with all mk xii blues-purples and they can nearly 1 shot cubes in red alerts THIS IS NOTHING SPECIAL AT ALL
if u know what ur actually doing when building a ship red alerts are a joke not more not less and all these people here that act like its something special to 1 shot /nearly 1 shot/ or kill a cube in 3 BFW weapon circles are honestly just not well informated about the basics of this game.
sure u can put ur super great universal consoles on ur tac console slots sure u can mix up cannons and beams sure u can use 5 different tac console tipes etc. etc. etc. and then u stay infront of a cube in a red alert and get mindblown when someone 1 shots these TRIBBLE things.
there are just woodheads out here that rather flame people who learned how this game works because they make SUPER EASY CONTENT LOOK SUPER EASY instead just learn more about this game urself.

Without all the fancy abbreviations and the short "just get this and this". lol..
Just ask, post your build and let others see it. You'll get your help
don't listen the others; do what you want. this is the only really important thing in game.
You may get differing answers so it's also going to be worthwhile to research the mechanics of the stuff they are suggesting and weigh them against your own goals. There are many ways to approach ship building and there is no need for you to limit yourself to the current game "meta" (though it may be easier to go that route).
Getting better at what you want to do in the game will involve a lot of asking around, personal research and patience.

i dont know what to say about this other then ...lol
i have twinks with all mk xii blues-purples and they can nearly 1 shot cubes in red alerts THIS IS NOTHING SPECIAL AT ALL
if u know what ur actually doing when building a ship red alerts are a joke not more not less and all these people here that act like its something special to 1 shot /nearly 1 shot/ or kill a cube in 3 BFW weapon circles are honestly just not well informated about the basics of this game.
sure u can put ur super great universal consoles on ur tac console slots sure u can mix up cannons and beams sure u can use 5 different tac console tipes etc. etc. etc. and then u stay infront of a cube in a red alert and get mindblown when someone 1 shots these TRIBBLE things.
there are just woodheads out here that rather flame people who learned how this game works because they make SUPER EASY CONTENT LOOK SUPER EASY instead just learn more about this game urself.
