Varanus gets -.1 shield mod, +250 crew, +7 inertia, and -5 aux power compared to the DSSV.
compared to a Fed science ship that cost 2k zen(Nebula), well the only stat the Varanus has that's better than the Nebula is it's turn rate, everything else is either the same or slightly weaker.
The 1.3 vs. 1.2 Shield Mod becomes 1.43 and 1.32 at Fleet. The Shield Mod not only affects Shield Capacity but it also affects Shield Regeneration.
Increased crew is a burden on ships because of the broken crew mechanic...where one might expect more crew to be better, more crew is actually worse.
It's not just -5 Aux, it's +10 Susbystem Power vs. +15 Subsystem Power. It's not a case of -5 Aux and +5 Aux somewhere else.
And with it mainly being a period before Delta Rising, that additional Fleet aspect comes into play with not only that +10% Shield Mod, but the +1 console, yeah?
DSSV goes from 2 Tac - 3 Eng - 4 Sci to 2 Tac - 3 Eng - 4 Sci.
Varanus goes from 2 Tac - 3 Eng - 4 Sci to 3 Tac - 3 Eng - 4 Sci.
Picking up the additional Tac console? Any change to the BOFF layout? Nope...still the same...
Now, at with the T5U angle...the DSSV picked up a +1 Tac and the Varanus finally gets the +1 Sci.
* * * * *
So since you mentioned the Nebula, let's look at the Fed 2000 Zen offerings there with the Nebula and the D'Kyr as they stand now vs the Varanus.
The Fleet Nebula gets the *1.1 Shield Mod and a +1 Console, in this case a 4th Eng Console taking it to 2 Tac - 4 Eng - 4 Sci.
There is still no Fleet D'Kyr (nor Fleet Guramba nor Fleet Marauder).
The T5U Nebula adds the 5th Sci Console, so FT5U would be 2 Tac - 4 Eng - 5 Sci.
The T5U D'Kyr also adds the 5th Sci Console, but without a Fleet, the T5U is looking at 2 Tac - 3 Eng - 5 Sci.
* * * * *
Did I buy the Varanus? Yep, I did. It was the only Sci Vessel at the time outside of the Korath Temporal Science Vessel (Lock Box) or Tholian Orb Weaver (Lock Box). And I bitched about the subpar stats the whole time...and have continued to since.
I didn't Fleet my Varanus. I didn't T5U my Varanus.
I actually stopped playing KDF...I gave up on them like Cryptic had.
I've got that T5U B'rel down in my sig, but that's only cause I got interested in what patrickngo has been talking about with BoPs doing Advanced/Elite PvE...and it took a bunch of folks to talk me into wasting that 700 Zen on it.
Marauder, Guramba, Kar'Fi, Command Bortasqu', Varanus, Mogh, B'rel...yep, I was the naive dumbass that was buying KDF ships. I'd have to login to see all the ships...I know I didn't buy some of the T4. Hell, even after abandoning the KDF...I was sitting there thinking about going back with the KDF CBCs...but then I remember why I'd left KDF to go Fed...and I wasn't going to keep being a dumbass by supporting the garbage that Cryptic was giving folks instead of what they'd been asking for.
I should have just walked away from the game instead of rolling Fed...and to be honest, if not for the BoP thing patrick brought up as a thought experiment I wouldn't be playing this game at all.
I play KDF and Romulan. I have no issues buying their ships to use. Even if they make more ships for the KDF or Romulan. It won't get more players.
1:
People come to play Trek, they think more of the Fed. Since that is what the shows/movies was about. Even myself think of Fed over the others when talking about Trek.
2:
Game story is now basically the same. There isn't much difference in separating the KDF and Romulan from the Feds. This is a let down. At least some other MMOs put enough thought into the story and what goes on to make them different. So in a way this put a damper on other players when they see the same story and mission. Unless the player is willing to really RP and kinda "ignore" I just did this. Which is what I do on my characters, so each one will be all new for them.
3:
Cash grab? To put in that way. Anything in life is a cash grab. From new phones to cars. Cause its their way to make $. By making you feel like your current "whatever" is no longer good. So you have to go out to buy the latest.
USS Casinghead NCC 92047 launched 2350

TNG gave us like 20 Fed ships and only like 3 KDF ships, and 2 Rom ships. What's up with that?
So you're saying that this is not Star Trek Online, this is The Next Generation Online. I don't disagree as far as the state of this game for the past 4 years has been. However, I think it would be good if Cryptic catered less to The Trophy Generation, and put a little effort into transforming this into a Star Trek MMO.
Putting some more effort into the Klingon side of the game, and then finishing the Romulans so they would no longer be a slave faction would go a long way toward discharging a garbage scow full of old baggage.
I play KDF and RR Side...fact.... I have 3 Romulans, (FED allied) 2 KDF kittens and going for 3 more RR to be KDF allied...
plus my 3 FEDS
We don't want your willy-nilly kind around here who cannot pick a side and stick with it. Either KDF, Rom, or Fed. No exceptions!
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
You don't give KDF or Romulans any ships (Science, T6, heck even T5, BoPs, etc) because you say no one plays them.
But no one plays them because Feds get all of the new shinies.
How do we convince you that we would? People would kill for a T6 BoP or a proper Romulan Sci ship. It's not overly hard to design one (stats wise) and I think people would be just fine if you re-used an existing model.
So what's stopping you? There's money to be had here, and everyone knows STO is making increasingly desperate cash grabs.
Before you jump on the 'HURR DURRR, CRYPTIC IS BUSINESS!' train, consider this
no there is no money to be made there, it was clearly stated that they dont sell sci. ships, klingon or romulan ships to justify them spending money to make them.
best they can do is to reskin the ship when they are making ships for fed. side. it is as simple as that.
you have no clue about numbers, and statistic that are in play here. and that cryptic have after 5 years that this game is F2P.
so on what assumptions exactly are you making your statement?
the garbage that Cryptic was giving folks instead of what they'd been asking for.
Uh, refresh my memory... When was this ship added to the game? I seem to remember it being one of the older KDF ships. and thus not designed based on player feedback....
Again... aside from changing the shield mod on the Varanus....(which really looks like a bug) What do you think it needs to be competitive? Aside from that it looks like it's simply slightly different....
When talking about the Varanus, I think it's important to mention that they gave it away for free a while back, might have been last year. Any ships that they distribute like that are pretty much an admission that the ship doesn't sell well. Even having been given it for free, I have little use for it since most of the older "magic button"-style consoles aren't competitive with reputation gear, and it'sfar too expensive to upgrade the ship itself when said character is already happily flying a FT5U Corsair.
If the developers are saying KDF sci ships don't sell well, that seems to me like confirmation bias on their behalf. They don't sell because there aren't enough choices, and those that do exist are either sub-par (Varanus, DSD) or too expensive for the average player (temporal sci).
I personally wouldn't care if the KDF T6 sci ships were to be made by the Gorn or Prions - heck, that diversity is one of the best parts of KDF gameplay for me.
I can't honestly say whether I'd buy said ship without knowing all its stats first though. I've spent enough money on the game over the years and it's difficult to justify buying T6 ships at my current activity level. That said, I still think KDF sci ships are a relatively untapped market, so one does have to question why the status quo hasn't shifted in the past 3 years.
Forget the possibility of PvP, for so much has become pay-to-win, never to be balanced. Forget the promise of exploration and research, for in the grim dark future of Star Trek Online there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting publishers.
Perhaps instead of rolling your eyes, you'd take a single moment to open them and look around...it would have been clear.
The sheer level of dumbassery of that statement is overwhelming.
Cryptic: We will give them TRIBBLE, and they will buy TRIBBLE, because we give them nothing else!
samt1996: Cryptic, I love you!
/facepalm
As an in-game Zen contribution or an out-of-game cash pledge?
1. Since you seem to have forgoten to complete elementary school allow me to educate you on Mathematics:
Let's say two people bought the KDF ADSD fifteen bought the FED one and five bought the Romulan one, that's a 2-15-5 ratio.
How about if two hundred people bought the KDF version fifteen hundred the FED and five hundred the Romulan one, that's a 2-15-5 ratio.
Ratio's are independent of the actual quantity of the numerical values. If anything the ratios should have been heavily skewed in the KDF's favor due to the lack of KDF science options, but that was obviously not the case as clearly stated by the DEV's.
2. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's TRIBBLE. The ADSD are among the most lethal tactical science vessels in the game even after Delta Rising. If you actually know how to use one they can be quite potent. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them aside from their strange appearance, which in the case of the FED version is the ugliest thing since the Chimera.
3. Just because I appreciate that STO even Exists, much less the ongoing support and improvements done by Cryptic does not mean I'm a mindless robot or Fanboy. I just know how to be satisfied and patient instead of being a Sharpie stain on the fabric of Society. Since you seem to take offense to eye rolling...
Well then, "Everyone i've talked to" does not constitute the entire KDF playerbase.
Better?
Quite so and all I did was make a statement of all the KDF players I'd ever talked to said they'd like a few Sci oriented vessels. Others took it far out of context.
Star Trek Battles member. Want to roll with a good group of people regardless of fleets and not have to worry about DPS while doing STFs? Come join the channel and join in the fun!
KDF was my 2nd character, as I had to lv a Fed to 20. Before it unlocked it. I was excited to finally unlock that. Since then I got a Romulan and a 2nd KDF to fly a BOP.
USS Casinghead NCC 92047 launched 2350
Fleet Admiral Stowe - Dominion War Vet.
That's not true. There have been a few Trek episodes here and there which featured Klingon scientists.
And those episodes almost all pointed to the lack of science orientation Klingon's have. Nice cherry picking there.
Heck the Enterprise episodes which featured the longest of any science oriented klingons even outright said klingons don't focus on it, and the scientist even chimed in on the shortage of doctors because of that lack of focus.
I play mostly KDF side. I have a 2 Romulans - 3 KDFS and 2 Feds. I'm also one of those "Space Barbie" players. I can spend hours fiddling with costumes and in the alien gen.
To be fair I've been playing longer than my forum signature shows. I first started playing when the game launched.
I left almost a year later because of how neglected KDF side was. I recently rejoined the game and I'm pretty pleased with how far the KDF side of things has come. And I'm also pretty thrilled with seeing Romulans added.
It's also obvious the game is moving towards shared content for all factions. This may annoy some -- but let's face it. PWE is making huge org changes and STO lost staff.
There aren't as many people to get the job done. So expecting too much KDF side will be a continued study in disappointment.
KDF probably is never getting a SCI ship. I believe the podcast where it was stated they literally sold in the dozens.
We just might end up with a decent T6 BOP. KDF side is also getting as significant update to character models.
So I'm pleased with that. Sometimes you have to choose your battles.. and the battle for a KDF sci ship is a losing one.
The part you snipped was in regard to the ships that the KDF have gotten since the launch of DR and what they haven't gotten.
The Advanced Dyson Science Destroyers back around the 4th Anniversary, the Chontay, MoQ, and Ta'Sub...pseudo copypasta from the Feds - same as the Roms.
Before that?
The Mogh Battlecruiser...some copypasta with the Fed Avenger (basically a means of giving the Feds a Battlecruiser).
Before that?
The Bortasqu' trio back around the 2nd Anniversary...going with the Odyssey trio release.
That's it...between the 2nd Anniversary through now...
9 Battlecruisers, 1 Raptor, and the 3 Advanced Dyson Science Destroyers.
There's going to be that Pilot boat coming, eh? Previewed in Delta Flight, yeah? So another Raptor.
So in around three years or so...
9 Battlecruisers, 2 Raptors, and 3 Science Destroyers.
Feds have Cruisers, Dreadnought Cruisers, a Battlecruiser, and the Command Battlecruisers which are mixes of Flight-Deck Cruisers and Battlecruisers.
Do KDF have Cruisers? Nope. Do KDF have Dreadnought Cruisers? Nope.
Feds also picked up a Carrier in that time amidst the many ships they picked up. They got their Heavy Escort Carrier - they got their Science Vessels with a Hangar, the Vesta lineup.
Hell, even the Roms got the Ar'Kif and the Scimitar trio. That's before getting into almost all of their boats having BC...course, those two do as well.
Hell again, though not a C-Store boat, the Aquarius got Flanking...doing the Raider thing.
If we look at the T6 boats the Feds got vs. KDF....
"Cruisers": 6x Fed vs. 5x KDF
"Escorts": 1x Fed vs. 1x KDF
"Science Vessels": 3x Fed vs. 0x KDF
...and yeah, hrmmm...with another "Escort" for each on the way.
No BoP. No Sci Vessel.
So yeah, I bought playable Klingon and rolled a Fed...flying a "Flight-Deck Cruiser". Cheaper DOFFs, more access to traits, etc, etc, etc, etc...
edit: At this point, I just can't really see them ever doing anything with KDF outside of potential copypasta of Fed stuff using old models...which is trippy, considering that's what Geko basically said it would be.
edit2: Hey, since it's a trip down memory lane, how about some of the console trading that took place? What the Feds gave the KDF in trade...
Impulse Capacitance Cell (750 Zen) for Graviton Pulse Generator (1500 Zen)
Photonic Displacer Module (750 Zen) for Theta Radiation Vent (1500 Zen)
Point Defense System (1000 Zen) for Subspace Jump Console (1500 Zen)
Antimatter Spread Module (1500 Zen) for Isometric Charge Module (1500 Zen)
Nadeon Detonator Module (1500 Zen) for Bio-Neural Warhead (1000 Zen)
Ionized Gas Sensor (750 Zen) for Plasmonic Leech (1000 Zen)
Enhanced Plasma Manifold (500 Zen) for Aceton Assimilator Console (1500 Zen)
Metreon Gas Canisters (2500 Zen) for Repair Platform (2000 Zen)
What would remedy this is some form of indirect purchasing or a Kickstarter inspired system.
My suspicion is that Klingon players aren't spending the same kind of money.
So maybe you have a system where each faction gets a Delta Rising style progress bar. The progress bar is moved by opening lockboxes. When you hit different tiers, projects go on Cryptic's schedule.
Or maybe you have a higher priced Fed ship at Christmas and every time one gets unboxed, a random Klingon gets a ship for free. (And vice versa.) It's a charity system.
Dumb question if Klingons are so bad at science why did they make time devices before the oh so scientific federation?
And if it take a kick starter project to get the devs to start balancing out the factions I'd pay but I'd be very unhappy about it.
Why did the Russians get nukes so fast after World War II? Because they used spies to steal the technology from someone who actually knew what the F*** they were doing.
Why did the Russians get nukes so fast after World War II? Because they used spies to steal the technology from someone who actually knew what the F*** they were doing.
Yes, yes I know how Janeway got it. But how did the Klingon get it first. :P
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.

The solution is to simply tear down the faction barriers. We're all in the same alliance here.
Irony of Rommies complaining about being under powered when we know another version of this ridiculously OP'd ship will likely come out for T6.
Once again Roms ignore built in stealth and singularity core abilities that offset state differences.

Metreon Gas Canisters (2500 Zen) for Repair Platform (2000 Zen)
My suspicion is that Klingon players aren't spending the same kind of money.
So maybe you have a system where each faction gets a Delta Rising style progress bar. The progress bar is moved by opening lockboxes. When you hit different tiers, projects go on Cryptic's schedule.
Or maybe you have a higher priced Fed ship at Christmas and every time one gets unboxed, a random Klingon gets a ship for free. (And vice versa.) It's a charity system.
"toQs for puqs"
And if it take a kick starter project to get the devs to start balancing out the factions I'd pay but I'd be very unhappy about it.
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.
Why did the Russians get nukes so fast after World War II? Because they used spies to steal the technology from someone who actually knew what the F*** they were doing.
Yes, yes I know how Janeway got it. But how did the Klingon get it first. :P
