So how do you explain the map changes ingame? A computer virus that affected multiple systems that required a printed copy of current star charts to double check their position sounds good.

"Ensign, you're positive we're at Cardassia?"
    "Absolutely"
As the bridge crew stares at the monument dedicated the lost worlds of Romulas and Remas the captain rests his head into both of his hands, breathes deep and sighs.

Looks very nice from the couple of pictures on the blog.
I will be lost for a while but will have fun exploring the new systems and planets. :)

I can't wait to fly around and look at everything! Except, is everything going to be open to KDF? I know there are some areas locked to Federation only, right now. I would like to visit the new planets with my KDF characters, which I play more often.

Wait so is this actually out yet or what? Sector space still looks the same to me and I can't find Betazed yet. When is this being implemented? I think I'm missing something here.

Oh man, I have been eagerly anticipating this for ages. I hope we'll be getting some revamped Patrol missions to go with all of these new systems and whatnot, and maybe a social map or two (for example, it would be really cool to have Ferenginar be a hub for bartering and commerce, perhaps even with a stock exchange).

    Great work, devs!

Probably asked many times, but. Since the DOFF missions have been fixed to the sectors (so flying around changes available missions), have the missions that were killed with exploration zone removal put back in? There are at least two chains that have been broken for years, because you could only get colonial missions at the old exploration clusters (like Delta Volanis, or the Az Expanse) and the chains had military doff missions (if memory serves, the jem'hadar ghost ship chain, for example.)

Borticus put a fix for all those doff missions through a couple weeks ago. Some of his changes went live with yesterday's patch, the rest are still in QA.

Yeah, I'm kind of gathering that from the posts I'm reading so far. But I guess I'm just worried that I won't get to enjoy it unless I'm lvl-whatever or have unlocked certain things. To be honest, I'm not a gamer at all and I don't really know how MMORPGs work, I just know I'm a huge Trekkie and I love that STO exists and I support any effort to make it better. :)

Awesome. This is something I think that will add greatly to the game. Thanks for the hard work, devs. :) Hopefully any bugs will be ironed out promptly once it goes live.

In regards to some of the new systems added, such as Trill , Tellar, and Fereginar, and the like (including systems on the KDF and Romulan side). Perhaps in the future these systems can be accessible like Andoria, Bajor, and Risa are. Maybe even systems already in the game like Cait. There's a lot you can do with these well-known systems from the shows.

    Definately looking forward to this.

Perhaps we'll eventually see stuff added like Trill, Vulcan, and Ferasan ships, etc. New and exotic alien ships are fun, but there's plenty of species in game already that can be tapped for content (hint hint :P).

Thanks again for the effort. Looks great. :D

Edit: Another poster brought up a good point. Will we see a return of the sector defense missions for accolades or will those accolades finally be removed? I've had several stuck in my list and unable to complete for a couple years now...

It's basically "just" a cosmetic change to the entire Sector Space Map ... so if you're flying around in Sector Space (like everyone does), you won't have to unlock anything ...

Deep Space Encounters (DSE's) have been entirely revamped... ish. The way they work now is that a deep space encounter will appear in an area for a limited time and your mini-map will display a special icon to show that the DSE is active.

Players enter the DSE map and defeat waves of incoming enemies. Your level and the enemy level in the map depends on which quadrant you entered the DSE in. The number of enemies in each wave is determined by the number of players on the map. After a certain number of waves, the instance (should) be closed out, and no further people can enter them. This is done to prevent people from entering finished or near finished maps.

When you have defeated 5 waves, the mission is complete and you are rewarded right away based upon your participation. The rewards right now are subject to change, so I'd rather just wait for people to start testing the DSEs on Tribble instead of specifyng what the rewards are currently set to.

Each DSE can have up to 10 players in it. If a DSE has more than 8 players when the 5 waves are completed, it triggers a bonus stage to defeat a few more waves for extra rewards.

So, here's a quick example. I start fighting a group of Borg in a DSE. I show up alone and start fighting the first wave. Admiral Tacofangs shows up and helps me finish off the first wave. The second wave spawns in and now is set up for two of us. While we're fighting the second wave, Commander bortis shows up. We defeat the second wave, and the third wave is now balanced for 3 players. Vice Admiral gorgonzola enters the DSE from sector space, but he's put into a new one because our instance is locked due to our progress in the mission.

Myself, Taco, and Bortis are fighting wave 3, but towards the end, Taco logs out because he's a Very Important Person. Wave 4 sees that there are now only 2 people on the map and balances itself accordingly.

I hope this clears up our plans with Red Alerts and Deep Space Encounters. I want to iterate that everything I've said above is not set in stone and is subject to change based off of feedback on Tribble. So, if something seems odd to you, feel free to jump onto the test server when this is up, check it out, and give us your feedback!

    This sounds fantastic! :D
A huge improvement over what we currently have, with the added benefit of not having the "red clouds" clogging up sector space. Much more realistic and immersive. I'm looking forward to this revamp even more. :)

Sol is still roughly where it has always been, on the Beta side. There was no elegant way to put it on both sides of the line, so we stuck with precedent.

Voyager didnt ever once say "we are going home to the beta quad". Sol should be on the Alpha side no matter which way you look at it. I think its important that you get the location of OUR OWN HOMEWORLD correct, even if you fudged the location of a few other places. PLEASE MOVE SOL before going holodeck.

i don't mean to be a **** but this fills me with dread. Y'all cant even get a icon update right. should you really be messing with the entire game world. Im just not confident in any thing you put out and frankly don't feel like dealing with a new series of bugs that might get addressed 6 months to a year later if at all.

While I agree that the icon update could have been done better, I trust Taco on this one. From the article pictures, it's looking really good so far, and can't wait to see it by myself on Tribble.

    Oh! Oh! I know!!!

Make it so everyone can travel into other factions' "native" sectors, but make them PvP targetable for everyone of the opposing faction unless they have Diplomatic Immunity or Raiding Party!!! That would make for some fun and interactive gameplay! :D

BTW, the devs should really consider this - might be fun. I know there's no way to have such encounters in sector space itself, but maybe it could work as a standard PvP challenge with the slight difference that the one waltzing into opposing space without DI/RP can't reject the encounter initiated by the first player of the opposing faction to challenge him/her.

This is a terrible idea. It would not be fun, and it would be beyond abused by level 60 jerkwads camping the edges of low level story paths that pass near the borders so they can gank anyone that somehow clips the death zone. (The Federation missions involving the Gorn and the Derpy Paris storyline would be big targets for this.)

Personally, I will not PVP. Ever, for any reason. If they added anything like this, my reaction to getting an un-refusable challenge would be to change characters. If they somehow blocked that, I'd alt-tab and exit the game. If it started happening with any regularity, my most likely reaction would simply be to quit playing the game entirely.

PVP should only EVER be voluntary. And yes, in games like EVE, you've consented based on the fact that the game is openly stated to be full PVP - if you don't want to risk ever getting ganked, you're most likely not playing EVE.

I know there's a flood of questions and such, but after looking over the maps, I do have couple questions myself:

1.) Did Nimbus get moved all the way north to the Hobus Sector? (While it may be more accurate, that seems like a long trip for newly leveling KDF characters.)

2.) I see Gamma Eridon was moved far down south into its respective sector - is it still part of the Tau Dewa Patrols/New Romulus Reputation?

3.) Are the Omega Task Force Transwarp Gates still a thing?

Otherwise, looks awesome! I'm really digging the larger planetary system scale.

Will the revamped sector space have an increased system requirement? I ask because I have an older PC that requires me to run at 65%-35% Renderscale depending on the system I'm in inside the Delta Patrols, or at the Dyson Sphere.

Yeah I know how that is I had an HP years ago that would get way too hot so I always had to have a fan blowing into it to keep it from reaching critical temperature.

Another side of it is that this game was originally bum rushed into production so there is a lot of code on top of code that is broken. If you take for example STO vs Neverwinter as far as resources go neverwinter has a bit better graphics as far as the look of it and requires maybe like 1% of my total resources where STO on the other hand requires a boat load no matter how old or new your machine is. This is just me though but for mmorpgs for how much they tax a machine those ones you can buy off the shelf at the major type stores they won't last long with mmorpgs being played I'd just recommend slowly buying up parts and put together a machine that will handle it.

On the DSE issue I do have a suggestion on ways this skillpoint issue could be addressed especially when it comes down to game design and ship roles like for example cruisers, battle cruisers, science, raiders, escorts, destroyers, etc. Would be interesting if there were DSE's that were a bit more complex where there is some objective in them most likely for Delta Quadrant where you have something specific that your class of ship excels in doing especially with raiders and science where as most would just go full tactical against these.

    Season 10

    Tribble now.
Taco, since you updated the alpha list of systems on STOWiki, any chance you could update the Galaxy map as well?

Sorry, I'm too lazy for that. I figured other folks can help propegate the info around STO Wiki. Updating Sector pages, system pages, etc.

If you can draw planets in System Space, the new Sector space shouldn't be an issue.

This looks very promising. Are we getting Ferenginar too?

Ferenginar has been added, though there is no content hooked up there at the moment. It will be available as a Foundry door.

Everyone (Including different shows) used a different map. That's part of what made this so hard.

    Hi guys,

I'm seeing some questions about Deep Space Encounters and Red Alerts, so I'd like to address them. Keep in mind that what I'm about to say is completely subject to change, so we may look back on this one day and go, "haha commanderander you were so crazy".

Red Alerts remain relatively unchanged, aside from a small bit. If a Red Alert is active, you will get the option to warp to the location on the map. From there, you can enter the Red Alert, and everything else plays out as it currently does on live.

Deep Space Encounters (DSE's) have been entirely revamped... ish. The way they work now is that a deep space encounter will appear in an area for a limited time and your mini-map will display a special icon to show that the DSE is active.
