Wait... you put the Sol system in the Beta quadrant??? Um... yeah, I know it technically is in both, but if you have to opt for one or the other wouldn't the Alpha Quadrant be the logical choice, since that's the location that has always been referenced throughout Star Trek history?
This is because stars all orbit around the center of Milky Way...
In the year 2402 the Sol system finally crossed the border line of the Alpha/Beta Quadrant and was soon shifted into the beta Quadrant.

My "in Universe Explanation"
Also the map changes are clarified if you think that space is 3-D and this new map is simple a view that was corrected to the "tilt" of the Milky Way.
We only fly around sector space in 2-D, but space is in 3-D.....
It is why if you had a block of jello and put 4 grapes into it when you rotate the cube the Grapes look like they are shifting all over the place.
We are just now traveling 0 degrees off the plane of the galaxy now with the map instead of 15 degrees tilted, IE the old map....
enjoy my rationalizations....
I must warn you, I am quite Isane! I am Grand Duchess of the Abh Empire: Beneej Letopanyu Spoor!
Well, technically Sol is directly on the divide between Alpha and Beta. But we can't put half of it in one and half in the other. We made a choice.
Serious suggestion: Systems are graphics, and doors are pointers; is there a reason you couldn't have what is (under the hood) two Sol graphics, one right on the appropriate edge each of each map, and a door pointer linked on each side? This would mean that whichever direction you came from, it would look "natural" (there would never be a viewpoint where you could see both, as each map only has one), and wouldn't require either direction to zone twice.
Deep Space Encounters (DSE's) have been entirely revamped... ish.
Will enemy flagships appear in these new revamped DSEs, because there is a accolade for killing so many of them, but in current DSEs they only appear between the active rounds?
Sol has been in the Beta Quadrant since launch. Mainly because the Klingons and Romulans are the earliest enemies in the story.
Considering the layout of the quadrants as they are now it was the logical place to put it 5+ years ago. But I would have expected that in the overhaul it would be moved to where it's actually supposed to be.
Even Memory Alpha lists Sol is being in the Alpha Quadrant, not Beta.
on tribble, i just took a sovereign equipped with the borg set, it took me over 3 and 1/2 minutes to go from the bottom left corner to the top right corner of the beta quadrants, at Transwarp 20.93, i like the change

This looks really really good. Hope they add orion and other races planets new and old. I bet this will open the door way to the new exploration system I know their working on.
I'm seeing some questions about Deep Space Encounters and Red Alerts, so I'd like to address them. Keep in mind that what I'm about to say is completely subject to change, so we may look back on this one day and go, "haha commanderander you were so crazy".
Red Alerts remain relatively unchanged, aside from a small bit. If a Red Alert is active, you will get the option to warp to the location on the map. From there, you can enter the Red Alert, and everything else plays out as it currently does on live.
Deep Space Encounters (DSE's) have been entirely revamped... ish. The way they work now is that a deep space encounter will appear in an area for a limited time and your mini-map will display a special icon to show that the DSE is active.
Players enter the DSE map and defeat waves of incoming enemies. Your level and the enemy level in the map depends on which quadrant you entered the DSE in. The number of enemies in each wave is determined by the number of players on the map. After a certain number of waves, the instance (should) be closed out, and no further people can enter them. This is done to prevent people from entering finished or near finished maps.
When you have defeated 5 waves, the mission is complete and you are rewarded right away based upon your participation. The rewards right now are subject to change, so I'd rather just wait for people to start testing the DSEs on Tribble instead of specifyng what the rewards are currently set to.
Each DSE can have up to 10 players in it. If a DSE has more than 8 players when the 5 waves are completed, it triggers a bonus stage to defeat a few more waves for extra rewards.
So, here's a quick example. I start fighting a group of Borg in a DSE. I show up alone and start fighting the first wave. Admiral Tacofangs shows up and helps me finish off the first wave. The second wave spawns in and now is set up for two of us. While we're fighting the second wave, Commander bortis shows up. We defeat the second wave, and the third wave is now balanced for 3 players. Vice Admiral gorgonzola enters the DSE from sector space, but he's put into a new one because our instance is locked due to our progress in the mission.
Myself, Taco, and Bortis are fighting wave 3, but towards the end, Taco logs out because he's a Very Important Person. Wave 4 sees that there are now only 2 people on the map and balances itself accordingly.
I hope this clears up our plans with Red Alerts and Deep Space Encounters. I want to iterate that everything I've said above is not set in stone and is subject to change based off of feedback on Tribble. So, if something seems odd to you, feel free to jump onto the test server when this is up, check it out, and give us your feedback!
Thankyou so much for elaborating on this subject, it is indeed a race against time now to complete these before the change........
I like this. Only suggestion i would like to see implemented, is instead of turning off the motion of the planets orbits completely, is slow them down to a crawl.
So, say you been sitting in one spot for an hour talking to people, the planets would have moved say half an inch or something. That would be nice
I agree that it could be nice to have the planets moving around. But if you think about it in game terms, the last five years have covered one and a bit in game years... So over the course of that five years (to a realistic game scale) the planets (Earth at least) would have only made one full rotation in the entire amount of time the game has been running. The rate at which it would turn would be so minuscule that we really wouldn't notice it happening except maybe in screenshots taken a few months apart.
Join date is wrong, I've actually been around since STO Beta.
True alters don't have a "main". Account wide unlocks for all unique event rewards!!

By Jove, you have just described a new game feature: STO Astronomy!
Trying to zoom out in sector space whilst in my Mobius Temporal Destroyer it will only zoom out a tiny bit & it's still filling the screen. If you zoom in you go inside the shell of the ship. I switched to an Odyssey & you could zoom out more. Although I prefer to have it fully zoomed out like you can in the current sector space. Feels really restricted on the Odyssey even
The Tribble patch notes state that this is a known issue. I'm sure they are working on this.

Crud, now you can complete those in about 2-3 hours each (70 times). Since Redshirt is up, they must be 3-4 weeks from release. Will have to concentrate on 1-2 sectors per day, even if my eyes bleed out from the monotony of it all. I'd rather shoot weak targets every 2 minutes and stick in one spot in space, than shoot scaled up targets and have to run after the damn instances all over sector space.

/camdist still works, tho it appears to reset whenever you cross into a new sector. Bind the distance you like (I like 25 or so) to a key so it's easy to enable.
Sounds like great changes all around. I just downloaded the Tribble update, and will hop on to check it out and leave feedback in a bit. My first opinion is that I'm going to miss orbiting planets. I really don't care if it didn't make much sense, sector space doesn't make much sense on Holodeck as it is...but I'll reserve judgment until I see how going up to individual planets looks on Tribble
Also, I'm amazed that deep space encounters are staying. I really thought those were a relic that would quietly get swept away, like the exploration clusters.
I remember doing a big post on the stellar cartography on Trek a few months ago, so I choose to take just a smidge of credit, even though it's not the truth!
This is awesome.

Just been flying around on Tribble, other than my camera clipping into my ship making it hard to truly appreciate the difference in appearance of sector space, it's pretty awesome! Flying from Earth to New Romulus without loading screens is great!
Since the blog didn't have any nice images of the sector blocks, I took a few shots in game.
Also, just to demonstrate how much some places have moved, I took a shot of the beta quadrant with the daily radiation scan mission which takes place in systems within the Tau Dewa sector block.
Glad to see you guys are trying to make some changes to the game, hopefully this new sector space will feel a bit more open.
Any plans on fixing the many many bugs that have plagued this game for a long time?
Also, just curious, do you guys plan to do any type of character remodel? I would really like to see some smoother edges on characters instead of so many lines and jagged-ness, I would like to be able to make my female characters a bit more... shapely in all the right places and my male characters a bit more "buff" looking. So any chance of this happening in the near future?
Also, any chance we may see some more Klingon Uniform's? It's really the only thing that has kept me from making a Klingon, no good uniforms. Nothing sexy enough for females (Orion panties too skimpy, especially with the jagged edges of females butts lol) And nothing that shows a male Klingon's badassery (muscles).
And yes, if you haven't noticed, I am all about good looking characters, EVE Online did a great job with their character models and that game is almost 11 years old, but characters look significantly better than any game today, go check it out. They even have facial expressions that change... can't STO get some love in this department?
Oh, becuase I was wondering what the hell the Federation was thinking having their secret ultra terraformer project that could be used as a super weapon in spitting distance of the Romulans, or how Kirk got their without accidently starting a war.
Also I think the nolveverse writers are using a different map because Vanguard makes no sense on that map.
keep in mind that actual space is 3 dimensional, and it might make a lot more sense at a different angle. if you look at "The Wrath of Khan" the Neutral zone around the Klingon Empire was this random Glob.

The wrong choice was made.
That being said, I'm really looking forward to the walls coming down!
+1 I agree with this suggestion.
