So, about the Varanus being directly inferior to the DSSV and yet costing 2k Zen...?
Apart from the shield modifier, which is higher on Federation ships anyway, how exactly is it inferior? An honest question, not intending to be a Fed supremacist (sorry if I sound like one).
Oh but you must not know crypric by now, they didn't respond for a long time on the last attempted nerf of the stf rewards nor do i expect they will respond until another loud outcry after they release this patch on the live server.
Sometimes I think the devs are really trying to kill their game when they do things like this, if it doesn't drive people away is sure makes those that stay question whether or not doing these upgraded difficulty and less reward stfs are worth the time.
But hey don't worry this isnt the first time cryptic has done this be it bugs or other things nor are they the only mmo that I have seen try to do nerfs or other such things to try to get more money out of their player base in a shady manner.
I think what they mean by "No queue will reward gear" is that there will still be drops in in the queues, but gear will no longer be part of the rewards system i.e. marks and R&D materials. Not that you won't get a damned thing from completing the queues, as some people seem to think it means.
Showing some love for the Aquarius . . . Did anyone buy those . Can we upgrade the cell ship? It has been needed to death.
Yep I did and then could not wait to get the fleet version. I was constantly pushing for ppl in my old fleet to snap to it so we could get those fleeties.
That was a blissful time. A time where a player could reflect on the adventure surrounding her. A time when long walks on the beach sometimes led to finding other groups of people sitting around blazing fires while the flesh of some indigenous creature roasted above it, on a spit so the haunches could be cooked into mouth watering skin and muscle slavering with its own juices.
Yes...blissful indeed. The Aquarius. A ship to die for. Literally.

Fair enough. While they are almost identical as far as stats, the differences are:
Varanus
Shield Modifier: 1.2
Crew: 750
Inertia: 40
Bonus Power: +10 Aux
Cost: 2000 Zen
DSSV
Shield Modifier: 1.3
Crew: 500
Inertia: 33
Bonus Power: +15 Aux
Cost: Free with Rank-up Token or 120,000 dilithium
That means for 2000 Zen the only advantage you have is a bit more Inertia; the C-Store console is ship-restricted and occupies space otherwise useable by a Crafting/Fleet/Lobi/Lockbox/Reputation console... that would in many cases be far more useful.
Otherwise, the free DSSV has the edge in durability (higher Shield Mod), hull and subsystem repair (lower Crew), and more power (higher both in total and for Aux specifically). All other stats are identical, and of course that isn't even comparing the Varanus to newer C-Store Science ships such as the Vesta-pack, which already performs well and is getting improved base hull of 29,040 and improved shield modifier of 1.4 anyway.
So yeah, can we at least get the Varanus buffed to the mediocrity that is the DSSV? I wouldn't complain about skipping that and making a C-Store T6 Intel Phalanx instead, though... unless it was for some unexplained reason directly inferior to the C-Store T6 Intel Scryer (or a free ship for that matter). :P
[EDIT] On a completely different note, how come nobody has mentioned the dawning of the Age of Aquarius?
With each passing day I wonder if I stepped into an alternate reality. The Cubs win the world series. Donald Trump is President. Britain leaves the EU. STO gets a dedicated PvP season. Engineers are "out of control" in STO.

To be fair; the Varanus console is actually quite powerful, and as a KDF ship it can access very good synergies with the aceton assmilator and plasmodic leech via C-store, where Fed ships are reliant on lockbox drops / purchases. So it's not too bad a trade.
The "rogue" Fed / KDF mobs in space were overdue, thanks for adding them! Now getting the Federation kill accolade as a Fed in space won't be an issue anymore. All we're waiting for now is for Fed mobs to be able to kill rival KDF mobs on ground instead of having to do one mission 1'000 times.

Dil nerf on Borg STFs and rearrangement in difficulty -> Why touch a running system?
Dil addition to other endgame queues -> Think thats motivating for this end game contend?
Different Very Rare Materials in different endgame queues by chance drop only -> Reminds me of lucky tech drops back in season 5 so why stepping backwards?
What a sad way to tell the customers hey we have other contend than the 6 classic Borg STFs as well, play it!
Think my way to approach it would have been to look at what peeps like to play and to build upon that. They did so at least with the Hive queues and managed it partially (one is just a boring DPS race and the other just needs the rudimentary of a strategy implemented which is not always possible in a pug but easily in a group community).
Think all of it is just a minor set back like usual you know when the latest reput is done and the all the upgrades are made ISE will be full of players and the 90% of the other queues are deserted.
What a complement to those devs who made the first 6(3 original) borg STFs. Players have enjoyed them thousands of times for the past few years and will continue to do so. Hope the current staff will not mess em up totally because I rally dont see anything else remotely as entertaining in STO as them (NWS perhaps).

I agree with you. Especially since as a KDF player it was almost impossible to get a full Borg set with the old STF's. Then we started having cross faction STF's but the chance to get the rare parts was slim. You had people winning them over and over again and others not even once. I had stopped doing The Cure (Space and Ground) because of PUGs being unable to complete them. I liked the way the old STF's were done (2 parters) but I really felt that when the rare items were replaced with Borg Neural procressors it was a step in the right direction. Now, we're moving several steps backwards.

To be fair... you're right about the console; but to be fair, it's still inferior to the free DSSV while the other C-Store Science Ships getting buffed.
I have to admit that the console itself is actually rather handy, though at times I've found that the drones will sit there staring at your damaged hull while running tic-tac-toe simulations. I'm not certain, thanks to running a drain build on an Engi (Captain Abilities don't make as much of a difference with that or a straight heal build), but it actually looks like Cryptic's own info in the Shipyard seems to be incorrect and it is actually getting the +15 Aux it should be as a copy/paste of the DSSV. I'm actually starting to question the stats we're given in the Shipyard, which were the main reason I never bought it... my testing does show the Shield Mod is only 1.2, though, and thanks to the borked Crew mechanic it's hobbled by that as well.
It's kind of sad that all of the "older" C-Store Science Ships are getting improvements (you can bet that they'll reveal the Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit improvements separately to promote a Delta Quadrant themed Expansion :P), while the Varanus is being left with its mediocrity. If the already admirable performance of the Vesta-pack warrants a buff to hull and shields, the mediocrity of the Varanus at least warrants some attention... and of course a correction to the in-game ship information that probably cost the company money.
