Well maybe you guys loved to be picked out for battle well have fun with it because I don't feel like it to get picked off everytime someone feels like it. So yeah if you want to pick a fight go visit the Kerat system or the otwa planet you can shoot every klingon or fed in sight.
Have Fun and keep it convined there to those systems....

"Coffee: the finest organic suspension ever devised. It's got me through the worst of the last three years. I beat the Borg with it."
I have no objections whatsoever to the addition of more PvPvE zones like Kerrat, none at all. I wont however agree with them adding "special rewards" for folks who go there, as this just leads to PvE players going in there just for the rewards, getting ganked and then crying about it as this was the only place to get the rewards. Just not a good idea.
What I wont agree with is open zone PvP. I've played full on PvP games (including EVE) and quickly learned that you always always get a small group of players who just spoil it for everybody by treating it as an excuse to grief other players, like blackmailing other fleets "pay us millions of credits, or our masssive "fleet" is going to war dec yours into oblivion". Even the tiny bit of PvP STO has already attracts small numbers of these people. As to an opt out/in, I've played games with this to, and it didn't work. You just get griefers using it as a get out of jail free card, unless you make it a permanent opt in/out where once you do that's it, you can't change it again. Go that route, and I can guarantee a forum full of people complaining that they did it accidentally etc etc. It just isn't worth the agro trying to introduce a system like this into a 98% PvE based game.
It's far far easier to just go hunt for a more PvP centric game (I've played plenty of them, and even enjoyed some of them). This really isn't the right game for it. Just look how people rant and rave when they change the specs of a ship or weapon! Imagine how they will rant and rave (myself included probably) if the devs actually changed the nature of the game completely.... It's too big a change.
Hell if you want more systems PVP zones sure, or if you want entire sectors off the beaten path, knock yourself out, or hell those lame ship engagements, those could be turned into PvP ZONES.
But open world, TRIBBLE that, played enough games that have it, don't really want it here.

Maybe they could do open-PvP weekend events on the homeworlds. Ships can battle other ships in orbit and player captains can assault the homework bases.
But... If you attack players lower in level than you, you're aggro goes up a ton and powerful NPCs deal with you.
Call it a 'training exercise' or 'Holodeck simulation.'
I've already stated multiple times in this thread that there is zero likelihood of this happening -- both you and I know this -- so your special snowflake starship won't suffer a scratch. The amount of hostility over a simple "what if" idea that, we both know, will not get made, is almost sad. It's almost as if the mere thought of your ship getting blown up by another player makes your palms sweat.
No, what you need is a nice, safe single player game. How about Farmville? Bejeweled? No, too many explosions in Bejeweled.
You keep harping on this...
This thread WAS NOT started as a "WHAT IF" topic.
It is clearly an "I WANT, AND THE HELL WITH ANYBODY ELSE" topic.
If you can't get that through your thick skull, then there's really not much point in continuing the dialogue.
It has become very apparent that you, just want to carry on an argument of trading insults.
Have fun with that...

Sector space is a travel map, PVP cannot happen in it. PVP open world maps will have to be separate instances.
OHhhhh ! c'mon ! we just spend a few years grinding for top gear equipment ! and now we have to grind the same s**t all over to mk XIV ... how could this make it possibly worst ?

Haha, cue the completely unnecessary indignation at the OP.
No one here is advocating ganking lowbies; you are placing that on us. Just as you are whining about how others want to encroach on how you play the game, you are doing the exact same thing by applying labels on others that are unfounded.
You know open pvp isn't going to happen -- we all know it, really -- but he made a simple suggestion and people have been discussing its pros and cons. Then we have players like yourself that get all worked up over nothing. No one is going to damage your precious fake starship. Relax.
The Opt-In was in no way evident in the OP. It was 'hinted at', upon second reading, and I did not take the time to wade through the responses - the intent seemed clear, that opposite faction sectors would be pvp, that people who 'weren't careful' did not deserve to be there. (pucker factor is missing, people feel too safe - for who?? what people??)
I stand by my words. It's not my 'precious fake starship' - it's my desire not to be messed with by a 12 year old with hormonal issues or a 42 year old with compensation issues.
Please reconsider ARC. Please make it optional, at the least. PLEASE.
It seems the vast majority of your most active players (forum regulars) hate the idea... and while that's a small subset of the playerbase, I think it's an important constituency.
THE PLAYERS DO NOT WANT THIS.
I thoroughly enjoy the replies from the proponents of this idea refusing to consider playing more PvP-centric games, while turning around in the same post and telling others to go play Facebook games. Hate to break it to you, but you have no more right to tell others what games they can and cannot play, whether STO is a game for them or not; than they have the right to tell you to go play Eve (it does go both ways). And yes, I am guilty of telling you to go play Eve or some other PvP-centric game, same as everyone who shares my opinion.
Ultimately, this idea will never happen. Because it would be too much effort on Cryptic's part. And they cater more to the PvE player than the PvP'ers. It's a well known fact of STO. It's time this thread comes to a conclusion - either by Moderator intervention, or people finally accepting that this is nothing more than a troll's thread, and quit responding to it. Myself included.

This would be cool, but only if there was some way to equalize power levels so that fights were mostly fair. Nobody wants to be roflpwned in 3 shots by some min-maxed PvP A2B-or-whatever-it-is-y'all-use-these-days lockbox/fleet escort.
Right, because every PVPer falls under those two categories. Looks like pale, autistic, OCD, neckbeards win the day!
I'll have you know that while I am autistic and could use a shave, I'm quite tanned from work and "neckbeard" is pushing it.

So, why are you so angry about it then?! Me, I'm just chuckling over the PvP tears, as I know Cryptic will *never* turn this into a PvP game. Cuz, face it, who's gonna pay $300 RL bucks for a lockbox ship that can be blown up by that 12-year-old and his hormones?!
It's almost as if the mere thought of your ship getting blown up by another player makes your palms sweat.
Hmm, 'special snowflake' ships... Love it! I've been asking Cryptic for that for ages! But, so far, skin choices have been rather minimal. At best I have perhaps-not-entirely-the-same-as-everyone-else's ships.
No, what you need is a nice, safe single player game.
Already have it. It's called 'Star Trek Online.' :P In here, I don't really need others to boost my ego, and I don't have to let myself be used to boost that of others.
So sector space needs a total overhaul for this to work, and there will always be at least someone being a complete jerk, but this sounds like a way to make STO interesting again.
This thread is funny. I just love how some of the PvPers are telling others to go play farmville when they themselves play PvP farmville games like STO. Yes STO = PvP farmville.
They can't swim in the oceans of the hardcore PvP games cuz they're nothing but minnows surrounded by sharks so they come to games like STO and hide where it's safe and they can pretend to be gods in the PvP kiddie pools.
:P

Open-world PVP is not the answer to the statement "people feel too comfortable" or whatever. In EVE, you only fly what you can afford to lose, because if you are a frequent PVPer (or even go near dangerous areas with any frequency), you're going to get your ship blown out from under you.
Let's see how excited everybody is for that idea when they get ambushed during undocking by ten guys in a fleet. They curbstomp you and you lose your ship and most of the items you had in that ship. They get a nice shiny entry on their killboard and you have to buy and re-equip your ship.
"Oh TRIBBLE I'm going through Eta Eridani...I better keep my eyes open" quickly turns into "WTF I was just trying to get through Eta Eridani and ten guys came out of nowhere, turned my ship into slag and podded me."
I keep saying 'ten guys' will get you because if you're having a fair fight, you're doing something wrong. If you want killmails you prey on the weak, the isolated, and the new.
*EDIT* - if you don't actually lose your ship there's no point. Systems in which your ship only gets slightly scuffed up in a PVP loss are BS.
I'm still excited, and I'm speaking as someone who would most likely get blown up a lot if (and it never will) this kind of PVP goes live. I agree with the last point, however, there does need to be some kind of punishment for dying.
Just pressing a button is pretty lame. While I don't mind the idea of losing a ship, it's true that people invested too much time and money (stupidly) on expensive ships. Perhaps some kind of cooldown while it's in repairs or something? The more damaged, the longer the cooldown period?
There is the respawn timer. Becomes an instrument of hindrance in an STF gone wrong.
I meant for PVP specifically. The respawn timer that we know from STFs really isn't punitive, it just means you are 1. terrible at the game or 2. your team is terrible at the game,
In many cases, though, it seems like both 1 and 2 apply.
Don't need to be bad at the game to get tagged with a 5 min timer in hive though, ever since they got the lances to work.

Hey, some of us LIKED your idea. And would love to see it implemented. By like Thursday. Of THIS week.
