I'm not apologizing for them. I'm just stating a realistic view based on past history.
A realistic view based upon their past inability for PR to know how to do their jobs, yes.
They should be ashamed that they couldn't even put up the blogs talking about the 9.5 expansion and the current lockbox until the DAY AFTER both came out.
Yes, there is reason. Maybe not reason you accept, but reason nonetheless.
WE know that Tier 5 ships will never be as good as Tier 6 because as far as i know it has already been stated that Tier 5 ships will be upgradeable but will not get the Abilities that Tier 6 ships have so they may be good but not as good.
And maybe you can give me a reason for a Mk and Lvl increase?
Its not the enemies, they are not strong enough to justify that, its not to introduce new Ships, they can do that with Tier 5, its not the Gear because Mk XII from Fleet outposts is already superstrong so no reason there either. They also dont need to do that for the Procs and stats of gear because different weapons and equipment with newer Procs, and Abilities can be released for every Type and Level (Biomatter Phasers, Bio Disruptors, Proton-Polaron)
So the only two reasons i see is that 1. someone just wants another way to get our money or 2. some Players just "want it" without knowing why. We are already Vice Admirals where should this go? A Starbase full of Fleet Admirals? Sci ships that kill a Tac Cube in one shot (without BFAW or BO)?
Its very simple logic that everything that is now Tier 5 or Mk XII will be weaker than Mk XIV and that you need to upgrade to that if you want to be top of the line (or you can play Kirk and sit in your Connie while the shiny new Excelsiors are passing by, so to speak). Because IF Tier 5, Mk XII can be as good as 6,XIV there is again no reason for that.
Why not just create new Weapons and gear with different effects? Electro lightning weapons that deactivate electric systems including Borg? Acid WEapons that do the same to every Biological Part as new Top Gear.
Do you know what would be neat? Playing a Captain Proton holodeck feature episode in black and white.
I actually thought of that...and I'd love it see it in game.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.
...Yes, and it has only been two days. If you want your imagination to run wild and think that your gear and ships won't be able to upgrade in some way, that's fine. But that's not on them, it's on you.
Can they TRIBBLE us over? Sure. But I doubt it's likely, because that would be a bad business move...
I see your point, but it is more complex than that. There is no excuse for being nasty on the forums. I also don't think we should condemn the Dev's ideas without seeing them.
I do understand that people have cause to be concerned with how Cryptic will handle "making our ships competitive". There is the new Alpha/Beta Doff UI and, the new crafting system being a "work in progress, with more to come". This comes across as "we are releasing content whether it is ready or not". There is the recent changes to Beam Overload, to which adjucatorhawk said "game balance changes to 'meta' and 'non-meta' powers have been planned for months now, and we're finally getting to start making them", so we can expect more changes to existing powers to come. The "weapon's fire animation missing" bug got a response from crypticfrost yesterday: "i sent out emails but have not heard anything back". I think this bug should be in the top 10 "needs to be fixed" because it effects so many players. You are free to disagree though.
So much is happening and no one has the time to sit down and tell us anything. We get more information from patch notes or Facebook than anything else.
Even still, forum ranting is not the answer. Nor is throwing a tantrum or rage quitting. I am going to hold onto my zen, dilithium and ECs (and encourage everyone else to do so as well) until there is enough information to make an informed decision on what to spend that currency on.
And in the absence of such knowledge, who'll put out cash for a tier 5 ship?
Probably not many. Certainly not people who recognize the possible need to re-buy later.
IMHO, the smart thing to do is defer any purchases of any type until after we start getting information. But that's just me. Some people may value the new shiny now over saving a few bucks for the newer shiny later.
And who am I to challenge that? It's their money, and their enjoyment.
And how much money does cryptic have to lose to lost tier 5 ship sales first?
Good question. It's their decision to lose it by not having a dev blog ready to post simultaneously with the event. But it's only been one full work day since STLV.
And need I remind you our dear CM as good as said he doesn't have control over approval for publishing anymore? So some PWE corporate minion may be holding things up, or it may simply not be ready. We don't know.
Yes we do know. It was said during the live stream with Stoked, and I quote "Current tier 5 ships will be upgradable, but will not be a direct match for the Tier variants"
The phrase I've seen is "nothing will be obsolete". So, until we get more information, and unless that is a direct quote, word for word, there's nothing that we know yet.
I don't know...Geko was in an interview saying that Tovan is a permanent fixture because they wanted a story-telling device for the Romulan Republic. He didn't seem apologetic for that choice (iirc) but you may still have a point if we no longer see a fixed boff or something similar to him. Is that Cadet permanent on the Fed side? I haven't played the new tutorial yet...oops
The way he phrased it, he made it clear (to me anyway) that it would basically break nearly every Romulan faction mission up through about level 30, when you break out of the Rommy-only stuff and start doing the same missions the other factions do.
Being stuck with Tovan sucks, but as reasons go, that's not such a bad one.
And no, you can release both K'Gan (the KDF first officer) and Elisa Flores (the Fed one) after a certain point. (Unless I'm remembering incorrectly. I'm not in a position to launch the game and check right now.)
WE know that Tier 5 ships will never be as good as Tier 6 because as far as i know it has already been stated that Tier 5 ships will be upgradeable but will not get the Abilities that Tier 6 ships have so they may be good but not as good.
We know exactly what was said at STLV and nothing more. Patience.
And maybe you can give me a reason for a Mk and Lvl increase?
I can give you lots of reasons, but you would likely reject them. But that's fine, because I would reject some of them too. And neither you nor I gets to decide what "good" reasons are, except for ourselves.
I see your point, but it is more complex than that. There is no excuse for being nasty on the forums. I also don't think we should condemn the Dev's ideas without seeing them.

Again, very true. "Wait and see" is a wise strategy at this point, IMHO, and anything more radical is premature. Of course, for those who are sick of the game, or for whom the lack of information is a "last straw", by all means, quit if you must. But polluting the forums with bile and invective is not a productive solution, whether you stick around or not.
If you want someone to yell at and vent rage toward, try a teddy bear. Or a character on TV in your living room. Or maybe a diary. But here, it merely gets in the way. [EDIT: This last bit isn't directed at you, redvenge, but rather the people who have been raging and yelling and frothing at the mouth.]

Good to see more level headed people willing to wait and see what comes rather than depopulate the tinfoil supply immediately.

people have been screaming out for more content or playable storylines,
i think raising the level cap to 60 is a pretty decent pointer that storyline
is what they have done. the level cap increase is the best method they
have to make sure we actually play it. people seem ready to hang the dev
team and call doOM to the expansion when we have only just been given
a few crumbs of information and some early stage artwork..
the forums CAN be a great resource of information, unfortunately it is also
home to some proper asshats (you know who you are) so hows about a
little less mutiny and pessimism, and a little more maturity and patience.
But I'm fully equipped on Mk XII, looks like somebody is getting greedy. What happened? Cryptic run out of ways to get money from it's users? Stop interfering with the dilithium exchange Cryptic... You know you are controlling the highs and lows and now this? Really cheap!

What's a rant about the DL exchange have to do with the new expansion?
Again, not apologizing for them but Perfect World is not a Star Trek merchandising company. They're a gaming company. I'm sure they understand the importance of things like E3 and other venues for gaming. Maybe not so much about Star Trek conventions.
Yeah, the STO team totally needs to be there at a Trek convention in the same way that the NWO team needs to be a presence at things like GenCon. But Perfect World? The guys who actually run the Marketing? Yeah, they should know. And if they don't, Cryptic should be reminding them. But this is just one of several games they have under their corporate umbrella. I've no idea where STO rates on the list. I know it's important to them. I just don't know how important.
I do know it's making enough money to finance another expansion. For me, that's all I need to know for now.
Here's the thing though: how many of us would still be bothering with STO if instead of being a Star Trek-licensed game it was "Dinosaurs with lasers in space", or what have you. I doubt it would be even half the playerbase. We've put up with A LOT simply because the game is somewhat Star Trek related.
So sure, PW is not a Trek merchandising company. But if STO doesn't cater to Trek fans and NWO doesn't cater to Forgotten Realms fans -the way other MMOs cater to their fanbase- they're shooting their profits in the proverbial foot.
Do you know what would be neat? Playing a Captain Proton holodeck feature episode in black and white.
My thoughts exactly. And sell the costume pack as a way to keep the outfits. They've already confirmed Harry's going to be a VO for the game.... Tom Paris can't charge THAT much (or be that busy, honestly)

In defense of the dinosaurs... we saw no canon examples of Voth military tech. So they got creative. Besides... wouldn't be the first time I saw weaponized Dinosaurs.

Dinos with Lasers on their Freakin' Heads is indefensible. It is like a paradoy of itself. One could almost say they jumped the shark with that one.

Come on not this dino's are too crazy for Trek TRIBBLE again. There are so many bat**** crazy things that happened in every series and some of the movies that dino's with guns seems quite normal.

And not this failed logic again ... just because there were some weird episodes doesn't mean that Cryptic should make an entire Season where 50% of the content is a big joke ... a parody of itself really. The fact that Geko quotes "Austin Powers" ... seemingly ... should be a big tip off that the are laughing at the players all the way to the bank.
Management: "What can make a TRIBBLE ton money for us"
Geko: "I know ... let's have dino power ... space dinosaurs will appeal to the 13 and under demographic which is our new target audience. They can also be milked for cash easily!"
Manegement "Brilliant ... give this man a cigar!"

If we are going to level 60 does this mean we are going to get 36k skill points to spend?
Going by the very little info released thus far, it seems like Specialization Tree will be what you work on going forward and no new skill points for the skill tree.
I could be wrong. They could expand the skill tree as well. But that hasn't been the impression they've given thus far.

You should know that working on the specialization trees will continue after reaching level 60, so you'll be able to constantly get new abilities through the tree.

Speaking of which, I do wonder if more UI changes are incoming to deal with all the "awesome new powers" that Cryptic plans to heap on us .

Would be nice to have a few more. Flores could be retrofitted in as a more permanent voice for Feds.
