There's a reason for a level cap increase. There's no reason - or excuse - for effectively stringing players along for four years before suddenly deciding that raising the level cap also means introducing a new tier of ships and weapons, rendering players years of time and money effectively wasted.
There's no reason to assume that anything was wasted.
There's no reason to assume that anything was wasted.
Isn't there? I happen to think there is. If this was all just a simple misunderstanding caused by a breakdown in communication, surely by now someone would have dropped by and said "Woah, you've got it alll wrong, here's what we mean by X, Y and Z".
Instead we have silence. No-one's rushed in to calm the masses or clarify the situation. So until someone does, what we've got is this information, plus a post from CrypticQuack stating something about provisions to upgrade ships.
Ultimately, Cryptic is the master of delivering answers that simply create more questions.
1. No matter how much you can Upgrade Tier 5 Ships they will never be Tier 6 so all of us who spent a lot of time and money for c-store and fleet ships would have to start over again to be where we were. If they do not make the enemies stronger STFs will be so easy they can be solo missions
You don't know this. We haven't heard any upgrade plans yet.
You don't know this. We haven't heard any upgrade plans yet.
Yes we do know. It was said during the live stream with Stoked, and I quote "Current tier 5 ships will be upgradable, but will not be a direct match for the Tier variants"
Here's hoping we get a Captain Proton costume and weapon pack, with the four outfits seen: Captain Proton, Buster Kincaid (Harry), Chaotica and Arachnia. A Robot combat pet to round out the set would be sweeeet.
I'm not big on Voyager at all, but credit where credit is due, and those episodes are some of the most fun Trek has ever been.

They can't release information when they want to. They run a business, so they are bound to protocol. They may want to, especially seeing the latest forum toxicity, but their hands are tied till the dev blog schedules are met. That's why everything is REDACTED till then.
Isn't that why we're speculating right now? Because we're still waiting for the full story, some two days after the announcement was made?
Yes, and it has only been two days. If you want your imagination to run wild and think that your gear and ships won't be able to upgrade in some way, that's fine. But that's not on them, it's on you.
Can they TRIBBLE us over? Sure. But I doubt it's likely, because that would be a bad business move. Cryptic might not be a perfect company, but they have demonstrated to have learned from their mistakes. Yes, including the 'mandatory' BOFF mistake that is Tovan Khev.
Because the Tier 6 ships are said to be a new class of ship, like the Dyson ships are a different class. They'll most likely have unique abilities you will not be able to get with an upgraded Tier 5.
Exactly. Its fairly obvious from anyone's point of view that there's no way on gods earth they would ever make it so T5 ships would be a direct match for the new T6 ones. Otherwise why would anyone stump up more zen or buy one. But I can only hope they've done a better job with these new T6 ships than they did with the Dyson ships.

If you think having Tovan as a mandatory boff even comes close to the issues we're currently seeing, you should probably re-evaluate how you see the game.
Firstly, more and more aspects of the game are changing so that Cryptic can take advantage of the fact that they can monetize the system. We saw it with Crafting, and you can bet your bottom dollar they'll do it with X2. Hell, if they're that desperate for cash, why aren't they starting a Kickstarter campaign?
Secondly Tovan's not even a bad boff. He's a free VR Romulan Boff that you get from the beginning of the game. Just because he's a bit whiny in cutscenes doesn't make it a major issue. He shuts up eventually anyway. I don't see the issue.
I'm just joking. Tovan's awesome.
You're just a machine. And machines can be broken.

That is hilarious! It's extremely silly but would be a fun vanity thing.

We're not 'facing' any issues right now except paranoia and impatience.
Also, yes, I do think that the Tovan Khev issue is important. What's the problem?

No one said they are desperate for cash. And why would they need to start a kickstarter campaign when they already have a means of making money?

Just because you don't see an issue doesn't mean there isn't one. But if you wish to understand what the issue is, I'll explain it to you.

I don't know...Geko was in an interview saying that Tovan is a permanent fixture because they wanted a story-telling device for the Romulan Republic. He didn't seem apologetic for that choice (iirc) but you may still have a point if we no longer see a fixed boff or something similar to him. Is that Cadet permanent on the Fed side? I haven't played the new tutorial yet...oops

And they'd be fools to pass up such an obvious source of revenue. And in response to the post the Johngazman was replying to. If you think cryptic have learned from their mistakes. May I suggest taking a look at the multiple changes made to certain items in the Tribble patch notes all over consecutive weeks I might add. And its not the first time this pattern has emerged. If they had truly learned from past mistakes then surely we wouldn't be seeing this pattern again?
One thing that I think has been overlooked... The announcement was at STLV. Some of the Devs and the Community Team were at STLV. STLV was still going as of Sunday.
They've maybe had one full day back in the office?
Sure, maybe they could have had stuff ready to go on Monday. But we all know they don't really work that way. So, some time this week. We might hear something further by Thursday. But even then we all know that full disclosure is a long, long way off.
I guess what I'm saying is, you might as well be patient and wait for them to say more. It's not like they're going to suddenly decide to prioritize getting every single blog for X2 out there tomorrow.
I'm not apologizing for them. I'm just stating a realistic view based on past history.

Yes, those do tend to happen when you drop a bombshell and then don't bother explaining anything. Or, as the case may be, that you've already explained yourself and people are left in disbelief that you've gone down that particular road.
As to Tovan Khev, I don't have a problem with you having a problem with it. I just don't see why it's an issue. In comparison to other issues, that is.
No one said they are desperate for cash. And why would they need to start a kickstarter campaign when they already have a means of making money?
Well, i'm just assuming they're desperate for cash given that every new feature seems to come with a pay-to-be-lazy option. Again, crafting is a prime example of that. So are the winter and summer events, and the anniversary events. And as I say, i'm expecting parts of X2 to be exactly the same.
Just because you don't see an issue doesn't mean there isn't one. But if you wish to understand what the issue is, I'll explain it to you.
Totally off-topic, but go for it. I'm guessing it's along the lines of "he's whiny and annoying" or "it's supposed to my crew and my ship, not this undismissable guy"

All plausible......
.....but in the meantime, I keep wondering how big a hit they're going to take to tier 5 ship sales......and whether that'll be the final straw that makes them realise their PR is fubar.

Well, yes.
Again, not apologizing for them but Perfect World is not a Star Trek merchandising company. They're a gaming company. I'm sure they understand the importance of things like E3 and other venues for gaming. Maybe not so much about Star Trek conventions.
Yeah, the STO team totally needs to be there at a Trek convention in the same way that the NWO team needs to be a presence at things like GenCon. But Perfect World? The guys who actually run the Marketing? Yeah, they should know. And if they don't, Cryptic should be reminding them. But this is just one of several games they have under their corporate umbrella. I've no idea where STO rates on the list. I know it's important to them. I just don't know how important.
I do know it's making enough money to finance another expansion. For me, that's all I need to know for now.

CrypticGuy#1: I don't get it, the T6 Intrepid we did can one-shot everything in the game. It should be selling like hot cakes. We haven't sold a single one.
CrypticGuy#2: You made Neelix a mandatory BOFF.

Do you know what would be neat? Playing a Captain Proton holodeck feature episode in black and white.

There's no reason to assume the opposite either.

And how much money does cryptic have to lose to lost tier 5 ship sales first?
