even if they personally have no experience with peddling that kind of market, they can still turn the various bits and pieces over to someone who can

Carbon dating is inaccurate, It assumes Earth always had the same amount of Carbon in the atmosphere, and the same amount of radiation, when that is simply not true. In fact, many of the dinosaurs you see in museums are painted with a lead based paint because the bones are still highly radioactive after how ever many years since the catastrophe that killed them. Now, if Earth was still this radioactive today, we would never be able to exist at all.

For another example, Earth once had much higher levels of oxygen, which is what allowed such giant creatures to exist. When the amount of oxygen was decreased, such giant creatures could no longer survive. That means creatures like Crocodiles and Iguanas (direct ancestors of dinosaurs), coelacanth and sturgeon, and other prehistoric animals, are only able to grow so big.

At current, Earth's atmosphere is mainly Nitrogen, with a total of about 78%. Oxygen is now only about 20%. The other 2% is various trace gasses, such as Methane and Helium.

Humans can survive on pure Oxygen for a while, but Nitrogen is needed to sustain your life. So don't be afraid to correct your teacher when she tells you how much you should love Oxygen.

it's not inaccurate to the tune of several billion years, though

such datings may be off by a few thousands years or so - even with several million years inaccuracy...that still makes the earth far older by science than by religion

That is it exactly. The Grand Canyon itself took much longer than 6,000 years just to create. And India, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Indonesia were once a single continent. India floated north and collided with Asia, forming the Himalayas. The Alps were formed when Afrika collided with Europe, and the tip of the Matterhorn is a chunk of Afrika. I could go on, but you get the idea.

Radio-isotope dating has it's uses, but it has a critical flaw. It only works properly if you can figure out how much of the radio-isotope was there to start with. Unfortunately, most "scientific" work tends to use ballpark figures that are more like wild guesses than good info. One famous example was radio-carbon dating a shellfish from the bottom of the ocean. The standard ballpark figure used for the starting C-14 percentage resulted in an age of several thousand years, despite the tissue sample having come from a recently deceased animal.

There have been plenty of Caitian characters in the novels. M'Ress was a main one in one series. I think she was in Destiny, not sure though, never read them. Only know what I've read online.

I could deal with never seeing another animal species in STO again.

I can't find the direct quote from the guy who said this, but a Dental member said something along the lines of:
If you want a fur or scale skin for your alien, that's great. If you want to show off your kawaii kitsune fursona, you can frak off.

New head models and skin patterns for aliengen would be awesome but this game has enough anthropomorphic nonsense species as it is. That's really the difference - are you rolling an alien because you wanted to create a visually interesting character, or are you rolling a cat because i liek kittehs?

I play Cats because of the sheer effectiveness they give in combat. But I also play cats because they are unique. If you look at any Star Trek species, you see that they are all Humans, Humans with pointy ears, Humans with forehead ridges, Humans with crinkled noses, and Humans with green skin. Personally, I've had quite enough of Humans.

Compare that to Star Wars, and you see things like these, these, these, and of course these. If you are dealing with a galaxy-wide scale, you need a large variety of differences in the species you inevitably encounter. Each species should be as unique as their planet of origin.
