Apparently Niven hated that depiction. :(

Because people with fur painted on them and pointed ears ain't the best design.

see, this is how any creature should be done: no massively bulging shoulders, no pencil-thin torso, no neck sticking out of the front instead of the proper top...and they look more than fierce enough to send anyone running as fast as possible in the opposite direction

oh, and the best part; already existing clothing wil fit them, instead of special pieces having to be created just for them

cryptic knew what they were doing when they decided on the particular appearance for ferasans that they did...one of the very few things they actually did right

Well, not as bad as some made it sound like, but I like the Ent version more. It looks more like an animal.

last i checked, insects, which are one of the 3 subclasses of arthropods, don't have waists

they have a three-part body system consisting of head, thorax (equivalant to a mammalian chest), and abdomen (or stomach)

i don't know about arachnids or crustaceans though, so you may still be on to something

and those bug eyes are not cute...they're nightmare fuel

I have no problem with jumping spiders, their behavior is interesting, as for the rest, well if someone ever put their tarantula on me as a joke, the room they did it in would have a nice big splatter pattern on one of the walls.
That said, we are way off topic now, come on guys let's keep it relevant.
I am curious why Cryptic decided on these limitations for the Felines, there isn't anything special about the head shape that would prevent the use of current hair styles.

actually, some of those hairstyles would clip rather horribly with feline heads...but that doesn't stop them from ticking off the caitian/ferasan race in whatever part of the code determines what species can use a particular style for the ones that don't clip like that

unless it's not that simple, and knowing how some of the stuff apparently got coded, that's very likely

I think it has to do with the faces and ears. Someone once got hairstyles to work with cat heads using bugs, and a couple of the hairstyles with bangs clipped through the eyebrows. Also a lot of hairstyles were too poofy and covered the ears.
