its not the isp its your server when will you finally accept the fact that since monday the server is not working in a normal manner its only STO that does not work namely holodeck server so restart the server

The REAL problem is we don't know exactly what they're trying to determine, or even IF they think it's an issue. My friends are apparently clueless to there being a problem, lucky them. (Someone noted that cogentco seems to be an issue, also, but I'm pretty sure I've seen people without it in their tracert's on the forums, so it's not likely just them.)

In season 4 all was working what have the devs programed in season 4 that the lag is so high cant be normal
fact is the server lag is so high that disconection happens in 2-3 minute basis and no one in the staff can fix that

You're one of the few people whose data I haven't seen posted. Have you run both a Tracert and nettest and looked at the hops and bandwidth?

I realize I am on a slow conenction, either playing from Roadstar or via a 4G modem...

are there any tweaks for a low bandwidth connection to reduce the lag itself?

I will admit this was running fairly well up until Season 4 witha little bit of lag lag but not too bad.

I also play from the hotel a fair bit where my connection could be anything.

So any tweaks at all would be helpful also is there anyway to enable or create a Lag-O-Meter for STO such as we have in other games?

    Thanks.

Pro-Tips on Diagnosing Lag and Rubberbanding

    Background:
For those unfamiliar with latency (or lag), this is how quickly your computer transfers files to a distant end. In our case, we're looking at how your computer interacts with Cryptic's servers. Most of the test information comes from STO's Technical Support FAQ.

Latency is measured in milliseconds (ms). This is directly measuring how long it takes to send/receive data. You want any tests below to have lower values. Think of it like waiting in line at the bank; you don't want to be there all day.

Bandwidth is measured in kilobites per second (KB/sec). You want these values to be high. Think of this as how much stuff you can mail at once.

Your computer is connected through many other computers to reach Cryptic's servers. Think of it like the Postal Service. Packets of information (just like mail) need to pass through several places (like your local and regional sorting centers). Sometimes a problem can be with a user, sometimes it can be with Cryptic. Before either party blames each other, sometimes the problem is one of these connections between Cryptic's Servers and you.
What the Devs Need from You to Fix the Issue:
    1. Tracert test results (see below)
    2. Nettest results (see below)
    3. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or who your purchase internet access from.
    Test Summary:
We'll run two tests. The first is a called tracert and measures how quickly various connections between Cryptic and you respond. The second is called nettest and gauges how much data can be passed at once on various ports.

    Test 1: tracert
    • For Windows, hit the start button
    • Where it says Search All Files and Programs, type CMD and press ENTER
    • The first result should be cmd.exe
    • Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
    • A black, command-prompt window should appear
    • From here type the following command:
    • tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com
    Good Results:
    • Values lower than 180 are ideal for playing MMOs (and anything under 100 is outstanding). Higher values usually cause lag and rubber-banding in-game. Report any values above 180ms. Right-click in the Command Prompt Window and select all. Save as a text file (txt).
    .

    Test 2: nettest
You'll see several columns. The ones we're focusing on have KB/sec to the right of a number value.

    Good results:
    • Column 1: ~300-500 KB/sec
    • Column 2: ~20kb/sec
    • Column 3: ~300- 500kb/sec

Report the Port Number and which columns are below the average ranges.

    Nettest can be copied by:
    • right clicking on the window title bar
    • select Edit then Mark
    • highlight the text by holding the left mouse button
    • hit enter to copy to the windows clipboard.
    • paste into notepad or word and save as TXT
(thanks PegasusMD for nettest copying instructions)
    Final Words:
When posting a problem, be sure to include the tracert text file and also the nettest results.

Fascinating. I will try that once I am back from vacation. Maybe, it'll work & I'll be able to play. (unplayable as of now)

If you think you have seen poor results then check this out. Taken at 7:45PM west coast time.
It makes me wonder how I can play the game at all! I ran it twice to see if it was consistent, and sad to say it was.

my tracert numbers were not over 50

my nettest numbers were double the recommended speeds

    so what is the issue?

why am i getting such nasty lag?

    Hello,

I am constantly having issues with losing internet connection when playing STO. I have searched around in the forums looking for solutions and nothing seems to help. Could you please assist? I am copying the information you requested below.

During the time I was getting those low values for ports 7003, 7202 and 7499 I could log in, I could have private chats and the odd time of flying around the nearest anything at full warp speed with my engines off. Another symptom is not having chat go to Local or Area. After some ' discussion ' with my ISP ( over half of the tracert to the game server ) talking about those ports, the representative did not admit directly that they were doing random port blocking to prevent peer to peer file sharing.
" we have the right to temporarily block ports that could be used for file sharing, but don't quote me as saying that we are currently doing it " sounds like they were and not wanting to admit it when people are phoning in complaining they can't connect to some online things that also use those ports.

Another poster also has experience in the network connections field and could verify the nice and low times for the ports that ARE connecting and a really good ping time for Tracert would mean a port issue.

I'm a bit confused. The tracert gave truly exceptional results, while the nettest is still doing positively abismally as it has yet to complete even one port test. What's going on here? I have a cable internet connection that can download at over one megabyte per second, and instead it's doing a variably slow under one hundred kilobytes per second and lagging to death when I actually CAN get into a game. (Both Champions and Star Trek Online.)

    Nettest:

Results inconclusive. Program is still hanging with no results at testing port 80.

(Both Champions and Star Trek Online.)

time outs in a tracert is never good. see hop 6
tracert uses icmp to test which is rarily filtered by routers. ICMP may be blocked by servers or server farms.
nettest test your transfer of game data packets over the ports the game uses (not all but some of the critical ports)
also if you are using win7 or vista you need to have nettest set to run as admin and have it allowed by both your firewall and anti-virus.

to test all the ports the game uses you can uses a web base port checker.

As you can see from the tracert, Shaw Cable is my ISP.

I have gone in and added nettest, gameclient.exe and the launcher to my firewall exeptions. from late monday on to mid friday the results were playable to " if you die, you wern't prepared " and yes, I still can't solo 10+ Npcs :) point being this is my 2nd weekend as not playable. I was in a nebula trying to do a diplomatic mission and 2x server kicks ( lost connection to server across the top then dropped to login screen ) then I was back in the sector with no option to continue the mission :/

xe-1-2-0.bos11.ip4.tinet.net [89.149.183.13] is where the issues for ping get higher and what i find doing a WHOIS online make me wonder where the route is takeing the data...

I'm in this boat, too. Tracerts and Nettests are nominal, but still the server stops responding, and then catches back up. Although lately, it's just been DCing. Quite often, and consistently.

    Hi there,

Just bought digital download deluxe version and I keep getting disconnected after mere seconds of game play. I literally can't get the first objective in the first area done, and that's just walking up to a door and selecting a menu option.

I connect from Israel, via the ISP - Netvision.

Below you'll find my tracert and nettest information:

    I concur--looks like bandwidth throttling/shaping.

So...yeah. Apparently my connection is completely and utterly broken for STO. I can't say the ISP because I have no idea what it is. I'm on university internet, and it all runs through a proxy or something. I suppose I could try to contact the residence department and find out what ISP they use, but I suspect that information won't be worth much.

The key things for me are this:
    1. My connection does work for most things. I can stream video up to 720p with no issues. 1080p tends to stall a bit, but I let it buffer for a while.
    2. STO was working fine last night (Sept 1,) before the (Sept 2) patch.

So either my University changed something in the last day, or STO did.

...Stays like this for a while.

So either my University changed something in the last day, or STO did.

the game uses port 7000-7500 . most universities block non standard ports to prevent unauthorized file share. some time the rules may be relaxed during summer time (when most schools are not holding classes) and then increase the rules when school sessions begin again.

also the game normally does not like using proxy connections other than what cryptic already has set up in the launcher unless the proxy is specially setup to handle the port translation for the game.

I'm having similar issues, lots of rubberbanding, server not responding, it works fine for a little bit when I just enter the game, but very soon I get lag symptoms. My connection seems fine at first glance:

I'm not sure about the nettest results, 2 of the colums remain at 0, could this be an indication of a local problem?

The lag appears to happen in bursts atm, the game doesn't respond for a while, then it suddenly works fine for 10 to 30 seconds, then it's rubberbanding again, even interracting with objects and menus is laggy, content in it won't load until it unlags for a bit. I'm using Tele 2 from the Netherlands, it's a standard home user 20 mbit ADSL line.

the two columns at zero are not a problem because it looks like you are using a non english version of windows.
the big problem are low values in the second 7003 and the first 7202 reading. indicates an intermit lost of connection problem.

also the jump from hop 10 to 11 in the same domain network is usually indicate of a problem in the hop.

both which could be causing the type of problem you indicate.

I've been fiddling with my routers ports and the proxy settings of the game, and it seems to be better when I use the EU Proxy now. It still gives a "server not responding" when I zone from one area to another sometimes, but at least it's playable now.

The tracert test showed great results. The nettest one, however, I don't think showed favorable results. What can I do?

The proxy seems to work for many people--especially in Europe.

I thought I''d resolved some of the issues a few days back, but it seems it was just random. Right now it's as unplayable as it was before, can't even move my character an inch before rubberbanding and "Server not responding". Oddly enough everything is snappy and fast before I enter the game world, login, patching and char creation work fine, but as soon as I get control of my character or ship, it freezes up, content stops loading.
