I'm there with all of you, i played the game like 8 hours ago or so, and now can't get on at all getting the same thing. I run Windows 7, maybe issue with it that came up randomly.
I am also having this problem. Never had this problem during open beta either so something must be going on at their end I hope that they haven't informed us about yet.
Keep trying is all i can say i just had that "problem" too and it timed out so i hit it again and waited and it worked the 2nd time around just let it sit in the corner don't touch it. Should work or maybe im one of the lucky ones >.>
If we want Cryptic to fix whatever may be causing this, we need to find out just how large this problem is. To do that, we need everyone who is having this problem to post in one thread. The more responses there are, the more likely it is that a real solution will be found, other than just "Restart you computer, Restart the launcher, or Reinstall the game."
I am also having the same problem. Never saw the problem during Beta or this Weekend (actually this is the first problem I've had). Now I can't launch and I keep timing out.

I get this on a Windows XP system. It's never been able to get past the "Trying to Update the Launcher". Other machines behind the network can connect without a problem. >.> I'm working from a fresh install and have reboot the system.
Also having the same problem. Was working three hours ago, now just hangs on 'Trying to update the launcher. Please be patient.'
Then after 5-10 minutes, Patcher error with 'The connection was idle for too long.'
Not having any internet problems as I'm browsing the Champion forums while waiting for it to get it's act together.
I have this exact problem as well. The only difference is that i havent been able to play at all yet. Hmm, and of course out of stubbornness i am going to try again now.
I have not even been able to see the game yet. I just finally got to the patch download (No i am not Beta) that all patched fine and dandy and then click play and nothing..click again..nothing.. Click a hundred times..nothing.. shut it down to restart. and back to being stuck on Updater loading I think it is so backwards haveing to go through this thing over and over to get into the game. So far.. very upset i wasted 50$
I really hope the devs do something about this. Mostly because all these good people (including me) spent all this money to be entertained by this wonderful looking game, to be disappointed because of this "error".
P.S. Also still having this issue. Note: Sometimes it takes about 5 mins before the time out error occurs, and sometimes longer. Seems kind of strange...
Been gettin' this since I began playing in open beta... I get lucky sometimes but every single time it's an uphill battle I just won't have the patience for. C'mon, Cryptic! You're better'n this!
Pardon my saying so but this ain't exactly a problem that looks like it needs to hit page 3. Is someone at least working on this? Can we get a little bone here? Maybe some way to get past this godawful thing like CoH had? I'd really love something like that right about now. Can we at least verify someone's working on this? I'd be happy with that at least even if I can't get in 90% of the flippin time.
What's this page 5 nonsense? C'mon, Cryptic! It's still happening so I'm still gonna be here throwin' a fit. This shouldn't be happening and the silence on this issue is messed up.

Restarting the client directly via the champions/live folder doesn't work either. I do hope this has something to do with maintainance; I wouldn't want to see this error pop up at random again.
Does anyone know if this error gets solved over time by just waiting for lets say 3 hours, or is there a more technical solution to it?
