Starting very soon on PC (and soon after that on Console), you'll be able to upgrade your T6 and T5-U ships with an additional Device, Trait and Console slot, using tokens you can find throughout the game - and every player can claim a free token.

Players are concerned about power creep however. Was that included in discussions while developing this change?
I kinda doubt that. We haven't even gotten all the T6s done yet. What mechanic can they add on to existing T6 systems to actually make T7 even viable? We've already got specialist seating, leveling, and starship traits. What more can they add to make T7 different from T6?
Also I believe the Devs have repeatedly said they have NO plans for T7. So I fail to see how this says anything other than buffing existing ships.

You totally missed the point.
With these tokens, you can add a Device, Console and Trait slot to a T6 ship effectively making them a T7 in all but name.
One thing is abundantly clear from this.. Cryptic is going all in on Power Creep! This is.. surprising.
For some ships, yeah, this will make OP ships even more OP. But for others, it will finally make them useful.
The Samsar's biggest problem is it's bridge officer layout and sadly, this won't help it. Even with the token, it can't use better then Lt. Level tactical which is just incredibly gimped. Something like the Europa? Definitely this helps that ship, the Fleet Version can get up to 4 Tacticals now, and you have an excellent bridge officer and weapon layout. This is huge for that ship.
The other side of the coin will be my 13 console Tzen-Tar that now gets an extra trait slot... man, that thing is going to make the Scimitar in Nemesis look like a TOS Shuttle Craft!
And Kael already confirmed on Reddit, that T7 is still not even a discussion. Instead it looks like we're getting T6-X which is basically, the same thing.
Looks like you can get 2 of these tokens for 1 UR Phoenix.. that's a very fair price considering there are people like me that run different ships on all my characters. That's a lot of upgrades to do, but the price seems rather fair.
They confirmed on Facebook, that 1 token gets you all 3 (+1 Device, +1 Console, +1 Trait.) You have to use all of them on one ship, so you can't add a Device to one ship, a console to a different ship or anything like that. They didn't say one token per ship, but that seems implied as that token takes the ship to T6-X account wide.

A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"

Maybe yes, maybe no.
The ones you can buy for Zen are tradeable on the exchange. Given that they cost 2k Zen for 3 of them, that will install an artificial price cap so many people will just skip opening boxes and buy from the exchange. Still, a good number of players will try and bankroll UR Tokens for sure.
The other advantage is this gives Ultra Rare tokens an actual use. They're valuable now, they're useful for something other then grinding down to a lower price.
I wonder how it works with fleet ships though.
Since those are character unlocks.
Not really sure, I am assuming the same as T5-U Tokens did. You upgrade the fleet version, it also upgrades the 'base' version of that ship. Any captain that then purchased that fleet ship would get the X Variant of it automatically.
That's assumption though, haven't seen much info on this.
Let's say you apply an Experimental Token to a lobi ships which you've unpacked on two distinct toons...
You'd get it on both toons, as long as they use that ship? Or is it locked to C-store classes only?

If you apply the token to a base ship, it doesn't automatically upgrade the fleet version. However, if you apply it to a fleet ship, (or any character bound ship), it will apply it to all copies of that ship you own on that account, and future copies as well.
So if you buy a fleet corvette and upgrade it, then switch characters and buy a second, it will automatically be upgraded.
The token applies all three upgrades, no need to make a choice.
And can we stack these on one ship? If I have 3 can I get 2 extra consoles and a ship trait? I mean there's not really PvP in the game anymore so why care about balance. Just let people go nuts and add 2-6 extra things to their ship, eh?
Account wide unlock. Good, I guess this will help C-store sales. Cause if you buy a one-off Lockbox ship would it the upgrade(s) apply there if you bought that ship for a second character?
Personally I think the console/device per ship is fine, but I consider the Starship Trait slot to be more like the other traits and be part of your character not the ship. That's really the only gripe I have atm about this new thing.

One token per ship.
You would get it on both ships.

Ah that's good to know, thanks.
Unfortunately I reckon most people will upgrade their currently useful ships to OP rather than upgrade under-performing ships to merely be useful.
And you still wonder why people are distrustful of anything you guys say?
Ci sono tre tipi di giocatori:
- quelli a cui non va mai bene niente... e vanno sul forum a trollare;
- quelli che sono talmente imbesuiti da credere a qualunque cosa i dev dicano, perfino che la luna è fatta di formaggio... e vanno sul forum a trollare;
- quelli che credono a quello a cui è giusto credere, sono d'accordo con quello con cui è giusto essere d'accordo e sono critici con quello che non va;
@ambassadorkael#6946 If you upgraded a scalable T6 ship, when/how do the bonus slots show up if you use that ship class later on a new toon?
Nah. He just said that they will come in the future. Just not yet.
Answered in the other thread and on Reddit, but I'll copy/paste
The extra trait is per ship, unlike the fleet Research Lab upgrade that is for the captain.
If you have a Gagarin with 5 Traits and you use an Experimental Upgrade, you now have 6 traits.. on the Gagarin. If you swap ships to a non X ship you will still have 5 traits on that ship. The extra trait slot is on a per ship basis, upgrading a ship upgrades it account wide.
Confirmed by Kael in the Reddit Thread: here.
There are a few distinct differences.
Unlike going up to T7, there is no addition to bridge officer or specialist powers.
Unlike going up to T7 you don't have to buy new ships.
These function similar to what would be T7, but don't come with the huge drawback of making your current ships obsolete. This is a much better approach then going T7.
I am all for calling Cryptic out when it's necessary, but lets not be rude when Kael is actually taking the time to post and answer questions. Being snarky when they actually engage will just cause further silence, lets show them we can be civil when they actually interact with us? Please?
i've been wanting to use that temporal vortex console from the first contact event so badly on my main, but there was nothing i could justify removing...now i don't have to; same for starship traits
the device slot, however...ehh, we don't currently have enough useful devices for that to be a big deal for me

I would also like to know the answer to this. Does a new character taking a T6 ship get the extra device and console slot from the start or do they have to wait until the character levels up to a certain point to unlock them. I can understand the extra starship trait not unlocking until the character unlocks starship traits.
