But see, Angrytarg, what you're not getting is that 'canon' is whatever the showrunners at CBS SAY it is, whatever they determine, whenever they feel like it. The reason is twofold:
1. They own the IP.
2. They know there's an endless cadre of people who will defend anything they do, regardless of whether it's any good, which then in turn supports the decision they make regardless of what it knocks down and paves over.
Oh I get that, I was never arguing the state of canon. I was arguing that selling something as a prequel which rewrites previous events is bad practice from a creative stand point. TOS physically exists. They can choose to rewrite their lore/canon and make DSC the new timeline, but they still fail in their attempt at creating a prequel. They fail to creatively achieve what they claimed to want.

Yeah, not only did they sell this as a lead-in to TOS, but they touted having "huge fans" in the writers room, pinning people like Kirsten Beyer as a "canon expert."
And, no, I'm not talking about blue uniforms or different-looking Klingons. I still hold the opinion that those things, while important to some, are secondary to a GOOD STORY. If they nailed the story aspect of this show, then I can forgive almost any of the design choices.
I'm not so sure they nailed the story part, though, and that's what bothers me.
So, something interesting tangentially related to Discovery.
Bryan Fuller has now left every show he was involved with, and it sounds like it's for the same basic reason. Although each situation is different, one has to wonder if this is a trend of Fuller as the man in charge. I also gotta wonder if he'd come back to Discovery, depending on how well the conclusion of the first season is received.
Then again, I'm not convinced Fuller would fix some of the bigger issues I have with the series. We would have gone to the MU sooner, but things like Lorca would have been different. This seems to still be Fuller's team running the show, to a large degree... we'll never know, unfortunately.
It was Fullers idea to make Orcs replace Klingons, so better he stays in Bragaland. The franchise has suffered enough xD

Bragaland?! LOL!!!!
Nice. Although, Braga claimed he cared about canon, while simultaneously p***ing on it and continuity in general... and I think the current showrunners fit that bill. But point taken, LOL.

Nah, Braga cared about production-continuity, as in carrying on the tradition of making stuff up as they went. I think the general attitude cited by Ronald D. Moore was that Braga was constantly telling them that Star Trek didn't worry about internal continuity when he kept suggesting things to make Voyager's lost in space concept more dramatic.

Show some more ships.....this show is very...claustrophobic....for some reason they hardly show ships that approach....what are they spending the big budget on? o.O
Sets, props, effects, acting, parties, CG- and animation are plentyful too, including starships. We've actually seen MANY different starships.
Braga decided that Voyager should not have internal continuity so it was compatible with syndication reruns. The audience should never not be able to follow the show even if they start in season 6. That's the often cited reset button. Discovery doesn't have that luckily but I still wouldn't call it continuing. It's all over the place not knowing which story to tell ending up rushing every single thing they touch. Sarek has mindraped people three or four times already just to speed things up and not lose time with dialogue for instance.

In otherwords, not needing the audiences to have to....think?
they didn't frak up the connie after all!!!! Well, now that I've paused it it looks like they may have increased the size, because we know the Discovery is much larger yet the angle in the episode makes them seem almost the same size. Hard to say for sure though, due to the angle.
Other than that, the finale was kinda ... meh. The episode Lorca died in seemed like a better, more natural season finale.
I knew they couldn't resist, LOL. Connie looked good, someone post a screencap!
As for the episode itself... eh. I keep coming back to the two biggest things in the finale being poorly developed, and thus, lacking in emotional payoff. This "war" didn't feel like a war, mainly because we barely saw any of it. I didn't care about Burnham and Tyler's goodbye, because their relationship was forced.
And Burnham gets her FULL commission back?! REALLY?! I mean, even Kirk got reduced in rank a step...
I'll share more tomorrow, once I think on this some more.
To sum up season 1 for me... The first episode was good, the second through the first 15 minutes of 11 sucked, then it got good up until the last 20 minutes of episode 15 and took a massive dump bringing it to an all-time low. The only way to redeem that craptacular ending would have been to have been; The Emperor should have killed Burnham, beamed back to the ship, liquidated the planet, and brought the Klingon's to their knees! If Saru doesn't get command of the Discovery, I'm done watching!
and that's how the JJPrise SHOULD have looked - though i still wish they would've kept the aztecing off the ship so the hull looks like it was grown, not welded

A screenshot someone asked for from the final scene:
Nice work, thanks.
I expect this final shot to be broken down for days on YouTube and what not, LOL. How CONNIE is that CONNIE?!?!
Also, why is the size of Discovery an issue? It may be long, but it only has ~200 people on it. And isn't it on the small side in STO?
If you look here at the 9 minute 45 second mark, the saucer of the original connie looks roughly the same size as the inner saucer of the Discovery, however in the scene from the finale the saucer looks as though it could be the size of the entire Discovery saucer, at least to me it does. As I said though, it's hard to tell for sure due to the angle. Overall though, I love it, definitely the best version I've ever seen of the TOS era Connie.[/saucer]
