In TOS, Kirk had a fascination with old Earth history, particularly the sailing-ship era.

In this universe, with a much rougher childhood, this Kirk has developed an interest in classical music from Earth's late 20th and early 21st centuries. (From a 23rd-century viewpoint, after all, the musical schools are going to start to blend together, just as today nobody will look askance at you for playing both baroque and rococo music.) I'm interested in how the other crewmembers react to his musical choices.

I'm getting a Voyage Home-ish vibe from the comedy so far.

    We'll see. :p

First grab attention with action, then go in with the deeper philosophical moral conundrum plots that Star Trek can have.

Considering the lack of those in the first two JJ Trek Movies, I won't hold my breath. Don't get me totally wrong, I don't think JJ Trek have been bad movies, just horrible Star Trek. From "They totally violated the Temporal Prime Directive, oh wells!" to "We can instantly beam 100's of light years away but still travel around in ships that takes days/weeks to do the same!" to "Magical Blood raises the dead!" The totally terrible science is eye-rollingly bad in these Trek outings. I'm hoping the new TV series returns to a more Trek exploration of the human condition and the hard ethical dilemmas that we face, and what we can aspire to be.

So, not a total bash on JJ Trek, it's execution would make for a great Star Wars film, and as an also Star Wars fan, that has me excited.

I will wait for other trailers to appear before deciding to see this or not. Though this first trailer gave me a headache and made me miss the lens flare all of a sudden.

Just watched it again on a big screen. I like how they're going back to alien make-up for main roles.

With all the destroyed starships in his starfleet record I am surprised he is still captain. Lol ... The trailer is heavy action based, made to try to attract a younger audience. That is clear .. But I am still hopeful, we only saw a very small piece of the movie. It seem to be injected with the typical Star Trek jokes. Loved the scene with doc and spook, really made me laugh. Seems like we are introduced to new species. Not sure but it seems like these aliens are attacking starfleet for maybe trespassing or something.

Two timelines gives me a headache. I am not sure which universe to enjoy, I guess both but if the second one starts deviating from the other one and introducing new species. .. It just gives lot of question marks to why they did not show in 1st one.. And vice versa. Although I don't mind seeing new species, it's part of Star Trek.

Given that Star Trek 2-10 were very thin in their moral conundrums. Star Trek The Motion Picture was the only Trek film to actually to what people with rose-colored glasses wear. The rest were all geared to be an action picture. To say that the newer films are any less-Trek than the rest are ludicrous.

While it obviously isn't a professional job, I think the point it makes is still valid. I think most of the hate this trailer is getting is just because of the beastie boys song. Other than that, I don't see any major difference from the previous 2 movies. If you liked those, you'll probably like this. If you didn't, you'll probably feel the same way about this. Either way, I plan to see it and make up my mind afterwards.

I'm thinking this is a Xindi storyline (Enterprise). The alien ships at 1:00 look very similar in design to Reptilian Xindi ships, just smaller. The white female alien could very well be a Primate Xindi (the way her hair is style is a bit similar to how theirs was in Enterprise). And the alien at 1:10 could potentially be an Arboreal Xindi. The swarm-like attacks could indicate some kind of Insectoid Xindi tactic. Didn't see any Aquatics or Aerials.

Almost certainly a Xindi storyline. It looks like maybe in this timeline there is some kind of Xindi Civil War? Perhaps the Reptilians (and maybe Insectoids) are now attacking Earth, after subjugating the other Xindi species.

While it obviously isn't a professional job, I think the point it makes is still valid. And like I said in my earlier post, I don't think that beastie boys music will be playing much in the movie, so I don't think it will be as bad a lot of people are thinking.

I'll be honest, I despise the Beastie Boys, have since their very first single came out. But the use of their music in the last 2 films has cemented Alt-Kirk as a fan of 20th/21st century popular music in much the same way that Riker is a fan of 20th century Jazz. Since the only thing we know about Kirk Prime's musical tastes is that he does not like Edge of Etiquette I'm ok with filling it in a bit. It also does fit in with Kirk Prime's love of antiquities, which was shown as still being a part of Alt-Kirk in the brief glimpse of his antique filled apartment in STID.

That's a cool story. But Kirk's musical taste in the movie is a different issue than the music that is chosen to play throughout the entire trailer. And again, I think a lot of the hate this trailer is getting is because of the trailer the music that was chosen.

Are we sure that this wasn't a trailer to advertise next year's X Games?

I'm going to have to see another trailer for this, because if this was the only thing to advertise the film I would have to say "no." It just didn't feel like Trek to me.

(And for the record, I liked the Beastie Boys since wearing out my cassette copy of Licensed to Ill a friend made me in middle school.)

TrekCore posted a decent breakdown of the trailer.

Two things jump out to me... the first being: I'm not sure how I feel about these new uniforms. Not really feeling the high collar. Then again, they seem to have given women cast members a skirt that actually covers things up a bit (full sleeves, like in TOS)... so, hey, progress!

Something else jumped out... everyone's favorite punching bag, Roberto Orci, is still getting a writing credit in the film. So, I wonder how much of this is his story, and how much Pegg & Jung wrote...

The music is part of why I am reserving judgment since know how much that can color perceptions...plus I have full confidence in Michael Giacchino.

You know, that really does help. It even helps make it clearer what's going on, even without the dialogue. Nevertheless, the fact that they scored the trailer the way they did does not bode well for the feel of the movie.

Looks worse than a direct-DVD movie. This is strike three. The first Trek movie I won't be seeing in the theater since 1986.

I still haven't seen anything as unwatchable as Insurrection, the one Trek movie I would've walked out on if that hadn't meant not having a ride. ;)

For me that's Final Frontier...I never walked out of a movie ashamed to be a fan of something like I did that day

I didn't see that one in the theater so I was able to "enjoy" it in the privacy of my own home.

I would rather watch Star Trek V 1000 times in a row than watch any more JJ Trek made by the director of the stupidest franchise ever, the Fast and the Furious. What a joke.

This film is gonna be complete garbage
pegg has already said there is gonna be even more action the into darkness
    really?
and where does a real story come into this?

Already confirmed they will destroy the enterprise...AGAIN :/

The critics already calling this Fast and the furious in space
and i believe thats what your going to get.

its supposedly the beggining of the 5 year journey....and they destroy the enterprise..... ok what?

Tbh this whole JJverse TRIBBLE is nothing more then that TRIBBLE anyone takes this hack job as canon is dillusional and a bit desperate for anything trek.

I'm not particularly impressed by this trailer sadly. In spite of its flaws, I actually enjoyed the first Abrams Trek film. While Into Darkness does not feel like a particularly strong Star Trek film, it was at least a good film on its own. This trailer though does not particularly inspire me. The emphasis on action that the previous movies had was at times annoying enough, but if this trailer is any indicator, then they just decided to go off the deep end with it. How do we top the Enterprise getting the TRIBBLE kicked out of it in Into Darkness? Oh, we just destroy it this time. :|

I won't dismiss this film yet at the very least, because it looks like this movie could be treading on new ground. This trailer however felt like a severe misstep. Hopefully it isn't an accurate representation of the movie.

    Meh.

There's an obvious comment that a relatively new plot line for Star Trek and a new villain faction might elevate Beyond above Into Darkness but the bar for that is so appallingly low that I really can't give this trailer any kudos. Yes, we're getting somewhere now with the reboot universe but we're still rehashing the same style of movie that exposed itself as fundamentally broken with the last one. Fixes here and there it seems but not enough to justify why this should still be a thing (as opposed to either a brand new paramount action/sci-fi IP that's built from the ground up to work well with a strong action focus or Star Trek films that do something with their place in culture besides milk iconography.)

That's beyond ridiculous. (Pun not intended. )

Seriously, for you to call it "not even bargain bin Walmart material" after a trailer that barely tells us anything about the film?

    Ridiculous hyperbole.

I stand by my opinion. This looks horrible to me. A definite pass.

    You can certainly do that.

You also sound like your blinded by Abrams Hate. Or, perhaps... Justin Lin hate. Or, perhaps... Beastie Boys hate.

Tricorder scans or diplomacy talks make for bad movie trailers. Just sayin'.
To be honest, the inclusion of said track, while a nice touch to Star Trek 09, makes about as much sense in verse, as Dom and Han cruising off to pull a job while listening to Track One, Side One, of Beethoven's 5th Symphony... :D I doubt all the musicians in the 23rd century were Space Hippies... TNG at least gave us the Alba Ra B)

If ya think about it, the song harkening back to when Kirk stole the car as a kid is very clever ...
It seems to indicate that they are going for a story plot that kinda gives us a transition as to how he thinks and acts now as an adult, based on stuff he did as a wild-child.
Stealing that car was a Very Big Deal, and was almost certainly a defining moment in his life.

It's certainly something that he's never forgotten and very much fits with this universes Kirk mind-set of take action now and the consequences be damned.
I get the feeling that the trailers opening scene, is one in which they are probably "borrowing" someone else's ship and in his mind that particular piece of music is most apropos.
If McCoy is in that scene, he's probably rolling his eyes. (cause you know Jim told McCoy all about the car incident)

Remember when we all went nuts on Star Wars when they had Kylo Ren's lightsaber and how silly it was?

Honestly I'm looking at this from a publication standpoint. Star Wars is hitting critical mass this week, so Star Trek puts out a campy fun action movie to remind everyone that it's looming off in the distance. First grab attention with action, then go in with the deeper philosophical moral conundrum plots that Star Trek can have.

Or it'll be campy. Either way, Kirk really has to get his TRIBBLE together. His Starship insurance must be through the roof.

I'm still waiting for JJ Trek to have any kind of philosophical moral conundrum.
