Remember when we all went nuts on Star Wars when they had Kylo Ren's lightsaber and how silly it was?

Honestly I'm looking at this from a publication standpoint. Star Wars is hitting critical mass this week, so Star Trek puts out a campy fun action movie to remind everyone that it's looming off in the distance. First grab attention with action, then go in with the deeper philosophical moral conundrum plots that Star Trek can have.

Or it'll be campy. Either way, Kirk really has to get his TRIBBLE together. His Starship insurance must be through the roof.

Allstate Starship insurance is a Wholly owned Subsidiary of Quark Enterprises!

Geico Geko: "I'm here on the starship Enterprise to prove that Geico's....
    Kirk: "Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!"
    Kirk steps on the Geko
Kirk: "It was a Gorn assassin."

Not only that, but it's brilliant strategy to release a trailer that will play before a movie that will make $1 billion dollars (it's already been reported that this trailer is playing before Star Wars). Paramount has to be thrilled with the Bad Robot connection to The Force Awakens. It's great marketing.

And, it's Trailer #1... there's at least one, likely two, more on the way.

Does Starfleet partner with Allstate?

I'm still waiting for JJ Trek to have any kind of philosophical moral conundrum.

Let's just hope he's strong and fast and fresh from the fight.
I'll be waiting till it gets bright out - and he surely needs to be here soon. This guy has to be larger than life.

Let's not tell each other what to like or not like. If someone doesn't want to see the movie based on this trailer, that's their right. This is only the first of several trailers, anyway.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

So I saw the trailer and...kind of hard to judge from that. I don't really get a sense of what the plot will be, but I don't see any reason right now to avoid it.

I'd still take any one of them over this latest stinkfest.

Into Darkness dealt with Kirk's choice to either seek personal revenge while risking interstellar war (a big deal, given the depleted Federation and the loss of a key member world), or fight for the ideals of the Federation even if it means one fights a losing battle.

Granted, that's not a "new" philosophical conundrum, but there's really nothing new under the sun. And, I will also grant you, that the 2009 film had no philosophical conundrum... but, that was not that film's purpose.

You're still not really showing why this 1:33 trailer warrants a "stinkfest."

@mhall85, in addition to the points you raise about the plot, I think we also got to see Kirk pay, not as much in official consequences, but in psychological ones, for his faulty presumption of invulnerability, even to the point where he saw himself as unfit for command. From where he'd been before, that was a pretty radical shift. What I will be interested to see (and I can't tell from the trailer) is whether we see any lasting marks of that experience on him, as the very end of STID seemed to suggest there had been.

Yes, @gulberat , I'll be interested in that, too! My personal hope is that they take that thread, and progress the character more towards "Prime Kirk." The "look without leaping" thing is a fine character trait to have, and I don't think it should go away... but, I want to see Pine's Kirk develop more cunning in his tactics and demeanor.

While it's early, it looks like the film sets up nicely for that.

Yeesh, they weren't kidding when they said that the new Trek would be like Guardians of the Galaxy... this is disappointing, to say the least. Guardians of the Galaxy is okay for what it is, but... modeling a Trek movie after it? No way.

Then again, trailers always lie, so maybe it won't be nearly as pronounced as the trailer seems to show.

Remember it took most Trekkers three seasons before they accepted TNG as Star Trek

IIRC we all accepted it as Trek.

Very, very, very, very bad Trek that made TOS season 3 look like 1960s Shakespeare, but it was all we had.

I came to this thread for mindless moaning about the lack of cardboard and personal hatred towards JJ Abrams and was slightly disappointed to see almost everybody saying 'wait for the film or at least more trailers to come out'.
I expected more utter contempt for a film that somehow, stubbornly refuses to be a seven series long TV show in two hours.
I hate to see how reasonable youse are all going to be when the new series comes out.

Edit: @mhall85 why are you bothering to reply to valoreah? You know JJ personally stole all his ST DVDs and burnt them, meaning the only Trek he has access to is the latest two films.

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

LOL... he also pissed on the ashes of those DVDs, writing "Star Wars Rulz" in them. Unconfirmed rumors state he also kicks puppies because they're "not Wookie enough."

I think this movie will be the best of the series so far!!! I personally LOVE the idea of the Enterprise going BOOM, the crew being stranded with little in the way of Treknology to help them! Kirk doing to jump with a dirt bike? Yeah,, that's a BIT much, but I have to agree with Trendy. This is the FIRST preview,, its 1:33.. its supposed to grab everyones attention without giving away too much! The new Aliens look very badass, and the overall Feel and Look of this movie looks different than the last. Also, I like Justin Lins work. Say what you will about the Fast and Furious franchise, from a cinematic standpoint they are GREAT works,, imho.. I'll add this to my MUST SEE IN '16 list right next to Independence day: Resurgence!!! With all the seriousness, and evilness, and overall TRIBBLE going on in the world today, who doesn't like to go to a " turn your brain off for 2 hours" abnoxiously loud, over the top movie every so often? Don't say " it's not star trek" until either A) More trailors reveal more plotpoints or B) You walk out of the movie theatre at the end of watching this movie.

My thinking is along the lines of valoreah: I just don't care for the JJ Trek universe. I gave the '09 reboot a shot, saw it on opening day. Did not like. STID was the first Star Trek film I didn't see in the theater; Beyond will be the second.

Eventually did sit through STID via streaming, and it was all kinds of dumb. I want to like these characters, but the stories are TRIBBLE.

For those of you that like nuTrek, enjoy. I'm looking forward to see what direction CBS will go with the new series.

I would hope not its the main reason Pike recruited Kirk in the first place.
