Is there an Emote that will allow me to give the middle finger to Perfect World for devaluing, HELL>>INVALIDATING<< one of the game's last remaining time-based currencies?
I really ought to go through this thread and a few others, and see if there's any correlation between people ranting about how bad "exclusivity" is in these ships and how great "exclusivity" was for the old Tamarian badges. Oh, and keep track of the folks who say they're never going to play again, and see how many start living on Risa during the event.
Except I don't really care that much. Anybody else?
Don't look at me. I'm not a fan of exclusive anythings. Had my way, you'd be getting all the goodies like that.
While I don't really agree that it was needed to remove the old currency and I am apprehensive about what will take it's place, at least you gave a small warning.
Except I don't really care that much. Anybody else?
Yes kind of ... but you missed the part where the Tamarian Badges were always Acc / Legacy Unlocks & Event Ships are per Character ... Apples & Oranges ...
Patch Notes : Resolved an Issue, where people would accidently experience Fun.
Sure, blow away our hard-earned stockpiles of pearls if that makes you happy.
But there is already too many things in the game that aren't available to new players/characters. Adding the Summer (and Winter?) event ships to the pile is just plain wrong.
I was under the impression you wanted to close the gap between old and new players, not widen it further.
This is my biggest problem with this change. I'm cool with them changing currencies and providing compensation for the players who've been stockpiling Pearls--I get how much of a pain it is to maintain multiple currencies for the same thing. I can even see uses for the ship emotes, especially if there's a respectable cooldown so that they can't be obnoxiously spammed.
I am emphatically, categorically pissed about the ships being retired and a different currency beind introduced every year. This is a terrible, poorly-reasoned idea that completely contradicts the kind of behavior that the development team has stated they want to incentivize. And the whole faux-collectibility thing, where the exclusivity of a thing is completely arbitrary and unnecessary, and permanently screws over anyone who comes afterwards--this is a slap in the face that is, again, in opposition to the desire the devs have expressed to eliminate this kind of gap between new and old players.
I was really looking forward to getting a Risian Corvette this year, since I missed out last year. I have always liked knowing that when I saw someone in one of these ships, it was okay because I could eventually earn one too. I figured it was going to be like every other recurring event with rep, where less hardcore players weren't locked out--if you couldn't grind what you needed this time around, no worries--just wait until the next one and continue your progress.
Awesome! That's how things should be done. It meant that I didn't mind putting effort into these events, because I knew I'd have another chance if I didn't have enough time to grind it all.
Now? I'll reserve final judgment until I see exactly what is involved in this year's rep grind and how likely it is that I'll be able to finish it before the end. But if I don't think I'm certain to complete the project before the end of this event, I'm not going to bother wasting my time participating in it.
So let me break this down:
1. Cryptic wants to encourage as many players as possible to participate in events.
2. To incentivize participation, they set goals with rewards that can only be earned during the event.
3. It takes more time and dedication than many players have to grind out the "ultimate" rep project before the end of any single event.
4. Players previously were not punished for having real lives outside of the game, because their incomplete efforts were not wasted--they were carried over to the next such event.
5. Going forward, if a player does not collect enough event currency to complete the project during the event in which it is introduced, that opportunity is lost forever and their efforts were wasted--or at best result in some kind of "consolation prize".
Is there some part of this that I'm misunderstanding?
Because I'll be honest, if this is the way event rep rewards and currency are being handled going forward, I'm not going to risk wasting my time. There are plenty of other fun things to do in the game that don't punish me for having a life.
If this is a trial balloon, consider it popped with prejudice.

I was here for the winter event, I did the daily grind with 3 alts, got a different breen ship on each at 'full grind price', then did a little more grind to get the other 2 ships on each alt at the discount price, 3 toons each with 3 ships, and 3 consoles, and the hanger pets unlocked if I want to use them.
One of my 3 alts from that event still flys the Breen warship, with the 3 console set. and is very happy with it.
Now a summer event, and a new ship to grind for, with those 3 alts and the new delta recruit. I had envisioned grinding for the previous ships on some of them so all 4 would have all the risian ships, for the console set bonus.
Seems that is not to be, that makes the one I can get a lot less attractive, especially if this years ship is say a carrier, not a fan of carriers.
That's a big disincentive for me as a newish player to bother with the event at all.
To add insult to injury...
Old players with piles of spec points can use last years stockpile of lolwuts to buy even more spec points, but I who have very few spec points and who wont be getting that many more thanks to the [crtd] *4 flanking expose XP nerf attack, will have to watch others getting set bonus AND cool new spec powers while I'm left with a ship I probably don't want and no spec points and no set bonus.
I'm wondering why they don't just change the "Iconian War" logo load screen to "New Players Not Welcome HERE!"

But, but, but...they'll be able to emote before others...and people have been flooding the forums with requests to be able to do ship emotes. I can usually remember some harebrained post or series of posts for many of the harebrained things that Cryptic does, but I must have totally missed the folks asking for this. Maybe there were posts and as some sort of defense mechanism...the ol' brain blinded me to them to spare me.
Can I steal your avatar pic? I know it's just the thumb's up rotated, but it suits my fancy and conveys my opinion of the topic wonderfully...
With each passing day I wonder if I stepped into an alternate reality. The Cubs win the world series. Donald Trump is President. Britain leaves the EU. STO gets a dedicated PvP season. Engineers are "out of control" in STO.
This is pathetic, even for Cryptic's standards! What a BS way to TRIBBLE over those people that saved up the Pearls from last year so they don't have to spend so much time doing the event again! First the Dilithium Rep projects don't get the bonus from Dil Bonus Weekend, and now this!? Are you freakin kidding me!? I can already tell that something similar is gonna happen to the Winter event!
While I don't really agree that it was needed to remove the old currency and I am apprehensive about what will take it's place, I commend you guys on at least giving a small warning, though a week would have been nice and a month would have been better. I am also pleased you offered rewards for the existing pearls.
It would have been better to say "This will be the last summer event to allow previously saved event marks, next year we won't honor them."
I would just like to voice my opinion that I'm not a fan of this either. While I still love STO and enjoy playing it, I've been getting less free time to play it, and at the last couple year's events, I tried to make extra time then to grind out all the currencies for the Summer/Winter/Anniversary events so that I wouldn't feel as pressured in subsequent years.
I feel like I have already spent the time doing the daily quests to earn those rewards, and whether I did it last year, or this year shouldn't make much difference, as that time was still spent, and while the dailies were fun the first few times, they started to feel like more of a chore (that I kept doing anyway). I'd rather be playing more of the story missions that I'm still not done on all my characters yet - even replaying a story mission for a 3rd or 4th time I still find more enjoyable than the daily I've done 30+ times (each year, on 9 characters - yes, even my alts have lots of the pearls, some from before the alt friendly price reduction was added in, and others, because I figured even if I didn't need all the extra, it would allow me to not have to put in as much time in the future).
I feel that this change just seems to invalidate all the time and work some of us have put in into collecting extra materials, just to reduce the time spent in the next year. In the end, this just means I'll need to put in even more time doing the event dailies on top of what I already did in the past, which was already above and beyond what a lot of other players did, and only compensated for things that I would have gotten anyway. Specialization points that I would get as I go through the story missions again on advanced/elite, and the emotes which I could easily buy using GPL later since most of my characters have at least a million GPL on them.
While I understand the design standpoint to get players more active in the events, those of us who have saved up a lot of currency were extremely active in previous events, and I don't feel this change gets players who didn't participate as much to change at all, and the only people that you'd see which you otherwise might not because of the change are those who are already have done the event to death, and the few new additions that are added, while fun, will quickly grow old when doing it day after day, possibly on multiple alts.
I would suggest an alternative solution would be to introduce the new currency as planned, but also to let the projects accept either the new currency, or the original one of Lohlunat Pearls to let people use them up if they have enough, and the year after, introduce another new currency, but still allow pearls to be used (but not this year's new currency), and so on.
Except I don't really care that much. Anybody else?
I'm satisfied that Cryptic gave us a reasonable use for the old credits, even if I'm not thrilled to have to start from scratch on another ship grind. The emotes are pretty stupid eye candy, IMO, but to each their own...

I'm with you. I'm gonna bust this ship out for lobi then spend the whole summer watching the swarm try to fly around aimlessly over and over again. I might be miffed about the change but it's not like I care either. once I got done with grind last year and switched to lobi I just sat back and enjoyed the event. I earned enough favors to get everything just by having fun and laying back on the beach all day. For a commodity I just happen to get alot of anyway and can't find a use for it's the perfect time of year. I hope theres more introduced this time like the surfing event...that was fun.
Is there an Emote that will allow me to give the middle finger to Perfect World for devaluing, HELL>>INVALIDATING<< one of the game's last remaining time-based currencies?
Oh hold on... PEARLS?!? OH...*phew* that's fine then. I don't give a sh*t about PEARLS. I thought for a moment you meant FAVOURS.
I was looking forward to the Summer Event, but not so much now. Get your ship as soon as possible and then relax and have a virtual vacation on a tropical island. But it seems only thing people care about is getting a Space Emote?? <Confused Look>
I did like to collect ships on all my toons, but I would have to buy ship slots on most. Guess I don't have to worry about buying more ship slots to make room. Good Deal. Thank you.
I prefer my idea far more.
Give them as Delta Reward or a Featured Ep reward.
My only beef with this is that the Delta Recruit I've been working on won't have the opportunity to actually get the Risian Corvette and Cruiser. I'm not cool with that. They're solid ships with cool consoles. That's a burn right there and I'm not OK with it. It's shutting my newest character out of the rewards.
The pearl trade in is a great idea though, I like that part, but I don't actually like not being able to gain the old ships on my new characters.
Does this mean that Summer/Winter costumes from previous events are also going to be given the "exclusivity" treatment?
Why would the costumes? They're talking pearls not favors.
"Rise like Lions after slumber, In unvanquishable number, Shake your chains to earth like dew, Which in sleep had fallen on you-Ye are many they are few"
I'm about ready to give up with this game, seriously...do you guys even want anyone to bother logging in any more?!?!?
I got the Cruiser last year and the Corvette and really enjoyed both. Considering they are free I didn't mind the work put in to get them over the month and also accepted that getting them on all my toons meant more work for me = fair game.
Then I get my DR toons up and running and think to myself, "i'd like to give them some nice ships and I liked the Risian ships, i'll wait till summer to get them".
And then this happens.....?????
Anyone who saved some extra pearls for this years event are getting truly bent over here. They saved them for a ship, not a measly ship emote or R&D pack. Even getting spec points for them is pitiful as I can get those anywhere just by playing the game.
You've just destroyed any faith I had in you to do the decent thing and have a fun summer event. The event is meant to be fun so who cares if some of us save up favors or pearls from last year!
But now you seem to be going down the route of taking away currency unless we use it and the time...how long until the winter event gets the same treatment, or even the marks and other currencies in game?! Will they be removed each year and swapped for another.
I can clearly see why you've done this = the discount give people the chance to get a ship for only 40 photos/pearls or whatever. But then people save up that currency for the rest of the event and the following year nobody bothers with your grind fest and gets the ship in a matter of days. I know for a fact some people have enough photos and pearl to be set for the next 2-3 events without grinding.
You guys just can't stand that some of us have some forward planning or are avoiding your grind fests so you devise ways to force us to login more to feed your dammed metrics!
But if you wont admit why you made the changes then I have no respect for you guys anymore.
But there is already too many things in the game that aren't available to new players/characters. Adding the Summer (and Winter?) event ships to the pile is just plain wrong.
I was under the impression you wanted to close the gap between old and new players, not widen it further.

I got a bunch of friends that are new to the game, and here I am using some awesome items and costumes. Things they can't get since they joined later.
Costumes like the Worf Sash. Sorry fed klingons, you don't get to wear a sash.
Worf Beard, the best looking beard in the game.
Kobali Uniform, parts that looks amazing for off-duty use, very fitting to Star Trek.
Diffrent things that doesn't even affect gameplay.
And then we got combat items, like the Kobali ship or Zefram Cochrane Shotgun to name a few.. and now Risian ships.
Stuff to further distance new and old players.
"Please, Captain, not in front of the Klingons." Spock to Kirk, as Kirk is about to hug him.
Star Trek V: "The Final Frontier"
Each of these packages unlocks one or two new powers, which can be slotted into your Starship Power Trays. Activating any of these Powers will display a brief holographic symbol above your ship while in System or Sector Space. All share a brief cooldown period, so as to discourage noisy over-use of this new feature.
Our hope is that having a few quick communication options at your fingertips may help even total strangers communicate with one another with ease, while flying among the stars.
Sooo Starfleet's new method of subspace communication is Emoji?
*facepalm*
Seriously, I have know use for these, so that's an easy pass.
Don't worry they left us a way to get the new Summer event ship on the 1st day but only if your willing to spend the couple hundred bucks to get it.
1000 of whatever new currency is divided by luck [2-6 currency per lobi package] which is 5 lobi which since the base payout is 4 you need a minimum of 2 boxes to open 1 package for your 2-6 current currency.
[167 - 500 currency packages divided by 5 lobi per = ewwww]
No more saving up in game, if you want it without lag, spend away
So rejoice, as this is the new intended norm.
So all you people who want to fly around a Risian ship on day one, better be prepared to hemorrhage a load of lobi.
I still don't get why people want to fly something on day one...the ships aren't so leaps-and-bounds above anything else that having them soon is an advantage, and most people will eventually get them anyway. If there's an OP console or some such, everyone will have a level playing field.
I was never one to go for day 1, but I always had a few days' worth saved to give myself wiggle room...~35-day event and 25 dailies needed, so if I have stuff saved to skip 5 days, that means I only need every other day during the event. Overall, color me indifferent, because the dailies are a couple of minutes each, and I have a manageable number of toons (7), so it's probably in-and-out in 30-45 min/day if everyone remains parked on Risa.
No one HAS many pearls left over, since they used them all last summer!
I have 1080 in my bank on my main character - never mind remaining pearls on other characters and I have all the ships previously available; so there are those of us out there that have many pearls.
Actually, if the old system remained I'd be able to get the new ship on the first day for 41 characters!

I have 1080 in my bank on my main character - never mind remaining pearls on other characters and I have all the ships previously available; so there are those of us out there that have many pearls.
Actually, if the old system remained I'd be able to get the new ship on the first day for 41 characters!
