Try reading it all again. The projects will all be cleared - at the end of the 2015 event. You'll still be able to finish them up this year. If you have a partially-completed project from a previous year and still aren't able to get it finished this year, then what the frak are you doing with your time in-game?
Edited my previous post but got ninja'd. I stand corrected.
I don't even understand the reasoning behind this move.
Yeah it's kind of silly ... but I don't really care ... it only means that I will spend less time on Risa this year, because doing it on more than one toon & saving Pearls for next year, doesn't work anymore ...
If they want people to spend less time ("grinding") on Risa ... they certainly did it :P
Patch Notes : Resolved an Issue, where people would accidently experience Fun.
How about letting me trade them in for the new item. Just like the pictures of Q, I've been saving them up to get the ships quicker. I call BS on this move, thanks alot!
Whenever they do the lockbox rerun events the first sentence in the blog is always something to the effect of "we realize that as a f2p title newer players may have missed out on old items", and so they are made available again, waxing philosophical about the virtue of being able to get old stuff again. But this blog says they believe in exclusivity and that something that has passed should not be obtainable later.
So which philosophy are we going with here? Cant have it both ways. I honestly dont care, I just would like some consistency so I can plan accordingly.
Now it's:
We realize you might have grinded ahead for these ships/special items in the past, but now you'll have to grind from scratch every single time.
Not necessarily or entirely agreeing with the decision, mind you. "Spend it or lose it" does not exactly inspire me to devote limited gaming time to grinding out for something I might fail to get. But there are other things I can do in STO that don't involve limited events, so I'll just focus on those. Maybe I should go back and give the Foundry another go...?
The specifics of the ships are immaterial. Its the precedent.
I dont care to have the luxury cruiser at all, and I probably wont miss it when gone.
But if the new summer ship has some sort of console set bonus that is of worthwhile use Ill be frustrated that the person next to me, doing the exact same event as me, will get more out of it because they have the cruiser from last year and I have a Delta Recruit.
Imagine this past winter event. You needed to have the Breen Raider to get those pets (which are some of the best pets and are far more than just cosmetic). So imagine if you were told that by doing the event you would be able to get a Breen Carrier but would never be able to get the raider pets that are supposed to go with it, while your friend will because they happened to pick up the raider the previous year.
if it was just cosmetic I wouldnt care in the least. I dont get the shiny purple sparkly mount that was available for a limited time but functionally its the same as the sparkly orange mount I can get.
Just because they have done something one way before does not mean they have to do that way every time!
Flyin High is the single worst event daily mission to grind repeatadly. It's tedious, it's boring, it's LONG, and even for just one character it's simply NOT enjoyable in any way. I was so happy knowing that I've done enough of it last years that now I won't have to participate this time and could still get the ship. Instead, now I read that it was all for nothing, and for recompensation I'll be rewarded with another grindy currency, or GPL store items...
But hearing the old ships are getting retired is just flabbergasting... A move so idiotic that... somehow it doesn't surprise me, coming from Cryptic.
It was Geko's idea, wasn't it? Because mostly he's so fond of removing or ignoring old content for the sake of new shinies/grinds he wants players to grind/pay for...
Would you at Cryptic at least FIX the ******n performance issues S10 introduced? Because as it is Risa is UNPLAYABLE, even at the absolute lowest settings for me and many other people. It was a resource heavy map to begin with, but now it's so bad I'm getting about 4 fps. Not really encouraging for an event, don't you think?
Christ... Cryptic, we get it that you want to keep people playing, but have you actually considered instead of grinding repetitive and unenjoyable content to do something that would be encouraging and interesting on it's own? Like, making something actually TIME WORTHY, instead of just feeling like a hamster wheel? Naturally I can only speak for myself, but all the reputations, dailies and daily limits, tokens and other restrictions do really make it all feel like a chore, instead of giving us a reason to play.
Please do not attack the devs!
People are working on fixes regarding the performance this season but the people who deal with those issues are not the people who create the content of the summer event.
So, because of personal circumstances, the 400 pearl per year grind I was able to do just got completely screwed over.
Thanks.
And none of my chars are level 60 due to the idiotic leveling scaling from 51-60, so I can't even get the useful rewards out of my ~900 pearls
I feel betrayed.
EDIT:
And the precedent this sets is horrifying.
Because I didn't have a PC for the winter event this year, this screams to me that I'll never be able to get that T6 Carrier, which is something I was looking forward to as soon as I saw someone using it when I built my PC.
They want you to play, hence the move. They don't want a huge part of the player base getting the new shiny on day 1 and not coming back to play!
Sure I got my shiny on day one, but so what? I still had to grind for next year's ship so they still got my playtime and MORE because I OVER played knowing I could use the extras the next year.
Now,
There is no reason to over grind as the results will be useless. So once that ship is earned no reason to play unlike in the past.
All they've done with this change is shoot themselves square in the foot and TRIBBLE everyone off needlessly.. again.
Let's see what the metrics say the day after everyone earns the ship and returns to normal duty.
Ok, I'm going to resist expressing exactly how annoyed I am with this, suffice it to say those massive Tidal waves that hit Japan are small in comparison.
I wasn't terribly upset about not having the summer/winter ships with my Delta Recruit because I knew they would be available again during the next event, it seems this is no longer the case...
I am not happy with this at all.
I can understand changing the currencies each year, inconvienient though it may be, but removing the previous ships? That's a dirty trick!!!!
Added to the massive insult of removing ships and rendering currencies worthless, is the meager prizes that can be aquired by turning in these now-obsolete commodities. Seriously? Spec points, R&D materials and Ship emotes (which will be made available for GPL later)?!?
Come on Cryptic, if I wanted to be kicked in the jewels, I'd go TRIBBLE bar and hit on someone's girlfriend.
Sure I got my shiny on day one, but so what? I still had to grind for next year's ship so they still got my playtime and MORE because I OVER played knowing I could use the extras the next year.

Exactly ... last year I was motivated to collect Pearls on several Toons .... but why on Earth would I spend more than 3min every day (playing ONE Toon) ... after this move ...
Patch Notes : Resolved an Issue, where people would accidently experience Fun.
Just because they have done something one way before does not mean they have to do that way every time!
Thats the thing with precedent, it usually holds. Especially since they made several references to this being the way it will be moving forward.
And sitting back and banking on something being a one-off behavior is a losing proposition. We generally advertise isolated behaviors as such, doubly so for companies with PR departments.
Just realized something... the only silver lining in this whole deal is that those players that stockpiled currency are the only ones that benefit. New players and old players that never slotted the ships lose out. For what reason? So there won't be a minority of players that get the new special stuff on day one (even though they did the grind to either collect or buy the pearls).
They don't exactly loose out - people get rewards for time spent in game. If they did not spend the time in game previously they have lost nothing.
Sure, blow away our hard-earned stockpiles of pearls if that makes you happy.
But there is already too many things in the game that aren't available to new players/characters. Adding the Summer (and Winter?) event ships to the pile is just plain wrong.
I was under the impression you wanted to close the gap between old and new players, not widen it further.
The first summer event it was advertised as that they ships would not return.
On the second event Geko said the first year's ship would not return in a Priority One interview, but it did come back... I think (but cannot be 100% sure) this was due to server issues at the time.
This year they're sticking with no previous ships available as they had originally planned.
They have not specified that alts cannot get previous ships if they have already been earnt - I have asked for clarification on this matter.
While you are asking for clarification on this issue, can you also possibly help ask the devs to alleviate concerns about the retirement of of the ships for any new character that was created since the end of the last summer event?
I have 1 non delta recruit alt and 3 delta recruit alts that have not gotten either the Risian Corvette or the Risian Luxury Cruiseliner ships. Unlike most people who probably wished to keep their stockpile to get the new ship on day one, I do not do that.
I was hoping to be able to beam down on day one, slot the project, run the floater course on those 4 characters, get one of the ships that I unlocked the discount for, wait 20 hours and then do the other ship on the characters. I'd like to be able to get them since I like being able to collect ships that I have spent time playing the event for.
While I'm not raging, as it looks like I'll at least be compensated for my current pearls, I do have some concerns...
1 - We need less of ("You weren't around two years ago for ship X, too bad!") going forward. Especially since the event ships seem to have console bonuses or pet unlocks. I have a lot of new toons that I fired up for Delta Recruitment, and some of them could benefit from a Risian ship, etc etc.
2 - This concerns me on a go forward basis. What happens when the winter event rolls around? Will we get compensated for the next currency being retired, or will the attitude be "They should have seen the writing on the wall when we changed the summer event, they get nothing this time."? Where does this mentality stop? The same could easily be done to rep marks, or dilithium, etc.
All in all, I don't think running these to stockpile for next time was that exploitive. It was all time that I (and many others) invested in generating the currencies. If Cryptic wants us to start at 0 each event, I'm fine with spend currencies for spec points or anything like that on a go forward basis.
Also - those ships really should be available to new toons the next time the event runs.

Of course it was intended! You just need to look at the ship consoles to see that - they form a set!!
They have not specified that alts cannot get previous ships if they have already been earnt - I have asked for clarification on this matter.
First intelligent thing you've posted in this thread. You've promised much but everything in the web post contradicts you. It says that we cannot slot the older projects.

Peeved is too strong a word. I was dissatisfied with playing through events before, so this doesn't change much for me. If anything, it means I can relax and enjoy the game the way I want to play it instead of chasing after another ship I won't fly.
If there's anything about this announcement I actively dislike, it's the ship emotes.

*whapish* Yeh, I see the gotta crack the whip and make us play. But you do know those of us who save up would just be saving up for next year? The metric breaks even. I can't imagine the metric break from "all those" people who saved up for 2+ years last time
Loss of ships. What a nice present for all those who bothered to make a DR. And what a way to welcome any new players to the game. Can't have them having a free ship can we, they might not shell out $30 for a cruiser/escort.
Add more "dead" DR standing in the corner on ESD/Qunos, meh they've served their purpose for you so who cares .. well next you'll complain now one plays there DR and it just hoards stuff?
Can I just flat out state that whatever marketing "genius" came up with this idea deserves a slap upside the back of their head. Yes I know it constitutes as abuse, but it seems like they started with a good idea - equalizing progress at the start of the event - and took it in completely the wrong direction.
Retiring the two previous ships is...understandable if controversial. With the release of T6 ships and the (apparent) success of the T6 versions of T5 retrofits it really makes sense to remove the availability of the T5 variants in preparation to release new T6 versions in future years.
I don't like it, but I do understand it.
However, the bit where in-progress Summer Reputation projects get pulled if the person doesn't manage to finish it in time? That feels bogus. Like a complete step backwards.
Its possible there are very valid reasons for doing so, and if there are I encourage you (Trendy) to lean on the marketing people as hard as you need to in order to get those reason not only released to the public, but placed into the blog itself.
One of the biggest and easiest to fix problems with this game at the moment is that things are being played too close to the chest. Decisions that are obviously going to cause controversy are being made and relayed to the community without any indication that you know it's going to cause a stink and after the fact attempts to explain the reasoning comes off a little hollow.
Whenever possible you guys should endeavor to provide some explanation of why controversy causing changes are being made before the controversy starts, which means more information in the initial releases.
I checked and see that I only have 120 on each character and I sold all me Lohlunat favors
However I have 1000 on many characters in winter and anniversary - and this really doesn't bother me so long as they come up with different interesting prizes for each event.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
Whoever decided retiring those two ships couldn't have instead decided to do so after the event ends? That way, it would give existing players a chance to participate and slot it or pass on it?
Risa is my #1 event I am waiting for.
Risian Corvette was my #1 Risa Event I was waiting for.
Consider 2 simple ways to make up for this huge disappointment and let-down:
- change it so that the existing Risa ships are retired at the end of the event.
- introduce a Risian Pilot Corvette that has access to the old skin
Having the option of having one alt grind out the new ship a year early did feel a little like cheating the system. Those of us who survived Delta Rising are long-term players; we took advantage of a poorly thought-out system.
I get the impression that those in charge never considered these promotions as ever being more than a 1-shot. A unique collectible item, that could be turned in for a ship or dilithium. The fact that they reused the same promotion 2 years running laid the groundwork for the belief that it would continue unabated.
Good on Cryptic for spelling out the changes, and offering a mechanism to get 'some value'. Lets hope that 'store' will be made available for everything current being collected; CE Shards, Qmendations, Mirror Universe thing-ama-bobs, etc. I have boatloads of each.
Ironically I never collected pearls. Disliked the ships with an extreme prejudice
Good on Cryptic for allow older project to use the next years currency.
So yeah, the change sucks. Better forethought on the planners part would have avoided this.
There was one daily I hated far more then flying high. The lag monster that was the omega hunting event. I pray to god that event never returns
IF the lag problem could be handled, I would not mind that one, as I tend to be very skilled with that kind of minigame. But the lag was not a good situation.

Here's my understanding of a correct reading:
If you ALREADY have the project slotted but not completed, you have until the end of the event to complete it.
If you don't already have the project slotted, you will not be able to slot it.
I welcome any correction of my understanding.

It was not just the lag. To me it was not a really 'fun' minigame it also dragged on thanks to how long each round was and how you had to do it 3 times a day.
I was going to buy (and not with Dilithium) 6-12000 zen to blow on pilot-scorts this weekend.
Instead, I will save my money, wait for the month of 5-minute log-ins for my (theoretical but likely) free T6 pilot-vette, and go play SW:TOR, where they're having a 12x XP event for people that like story but hate grind.
