Logged in just to voice my displeasure with this change. I've never been a fan of exclusive items that are tied to playing at a certain time. Searching a wiki for a cool item just to see "No longer available ingame" is very disheartening.
Gating an item behind a "you must have played during this certain time period" wall doesn't increase play time. It simply depresses players. However, keeping these special items (in this case, ships) available will actually increase time played for the simple fact people will need to keep logging in for those past shinies.
I am rather dejected I will only be able to get the Corvette on one character. The luxury cruiser? Possibly not since I don't have it slotted on any character. That's a bummer.
Look, would a better alternative be to leave the ships? upgrade them to t6 and allow everyone to get a choice? I never really bothered to do any advanced saving since I run the events with friends, gives us all something to goal for. But I for one very much intended to have the opportunity to get the summer even ships for a couple people, mostly my Delta alts.
Originally the ships were not going to be available for the next year's event, so they're only moving to what they'd originally planned.
Still doesn't answer the original question. Also, the emphasized bit was not publicly announced before today, so there's no "originally", perhaps devs knew that internally but we didn't.
I collected more just I could...you know...."enjoy" the next event without having to "play" the next grind - I mean "game"- that y'all cook up for this ****heap....
Checking to see about that on whether it's permanent, semi-permanent, or temporary.
Thanks a lot!
Beta, LTA, CE, Multiple preorder Versions, all Addon Packs except AoY, nearly all KDF/Rom and ~50% of all Fedships, over 25 LockboxShips, Endurer of Atari's "Year of Hell", but...
That's kind of annoying. Well, to be honest, it's more of a tirade of expletives and a description of anatomically impossible sexual acts with dead farm animals...than just annoying.
So you go through and make it so folks were able to do the account unlocks to reduce the cost to be able to get the ships with the event...then decide to remove the ships so that won't be possible with any future characters that are created. Guessing the same will happen with the Winter ships too.
Meanwhile, you're more than happy to create the Delta Recruit event to have folks create all sorts of new toons - still happy to sell character slots so folks might have created new toons after the last Summer/Winter events...and then drop this out on folks?
I've always done the /facepalm at the folks that grumble that you hate the players...but this is sheer wtfness.
If you already have the previous ships you can still get them on your alts. If you did not previously get the ships, you cannot slot a project to get them this time round. If you started the project last year and did not finish it, you can finish it using the new currency.
Originally the ships were not going to be available for the next year's event, so they're only moving to what they'd originally planned.
Was the Risian Corvette available with the following Summer event? Yes.
Was the Breen Chel Grett available with the following Winter Event after having done the Risian Corvette available with the following Summer Event? Yes.
Was the Breen Plesh Brek available with the following Winter Event after having done the Breen Chel Grett available with the following Winter Event after having done the Risian Corvette available with the following Summer Event? Yes.
So they're moving on to what they originally planned...after having not done what they planned with one Summer and two Winter events? While also adding in the account unlocks so folks would have an easier time getting those ships on future created alts for the next event...which obviously must not have been what they planned either, eh?
A huge steaming pile of targ diarrhea...is what that is.
If you already have the previous ships you can still get them on your alts. If you did not previously get the ships, you cannot slot a project to get them this time round. If you started the project last year and did not finish it, you can finish it using the new currency.
It doesn't say that. It says that new projects cannot be slotted. In order to get the ship, a project has to be slotted...at the reduced 40 cost, but it is still a project. If one can't slot the project...one can't get the ship.
Wait, starship emotes? Seriously Cryptic? This is really a stupid idea...on high level of stupid. And also, we do have Summer event in the middle of Iconian War. Something sounds seriously wrong here...
I really dont see what the problem with the emotes is. I dont think its a good thing, but I dont think its bad either. Also the fact that we can still visit New Romulus or Qo'noS after so much dmg is done seems to be a bigger issue than having a summer event. Its a game, new characters are a year in the past from lvl 60's and most parts of the galaxy dont seem to even realize that something is happening somewhere else. Like the DS9 controller who still doesnt trust KDF forces.
I personally think its a good idea. It makes sense that there are people who dont always have time to play these things, but over all I think this is a good move. I think 1 way to alleviate people and timing issues would be if instead of having a 20hr CD when you pick up the mission, it should just reset every day at a set time for everyone.

Anyone want to give me a Temporal Heavy Dreadnought pack? I'll be your friend
EDIT: just to add clarification, this is unrelated to the solution down the road regarding XP.
wait, does that mean that you're actually aware that there is a problem on that front? this should be you're top priority right now, especially considering how much cash grab went down the river recently... just boost the damn numbers, not that hard.
Defiant
RnD and upgrade needs less RNG. Less lottery. Something has to change.
I agree that this is a VERY poor move. While I am glad to take from this thread that there is still ongoing talk behind the scenes about the XP problem (displeased as I am over the potential effects of this move, I did not miss Trendy's second post in this thread), I find this move very disrespectful of the time and effort of customers who stockpiled. It's not cheating. It's not an exploit. If you are not botting or otherwise AFK'ing, it is completely legitimate.
Also, if this is happening now for the Summer Event (which for reasons of personal faith I have consistently opted not to participate in since it debuted), I strongly suggest that if this will be the policy for ALL "special currency" events going forward, ranging from Event Rep to Winter Event to Anniversary, that Cryptic come clean about it NOW rather than face multiple firestorms later, and take the time to speak with players who will be impacted, about a truly equitable solution.
I, for one, want to know what happens with my Qmendations, assuming STO survives that long, for the 6th Anniversary. I have enough for next year and a start into the 7th Anniversary, and this is not cheating. I spent a long time to EARN that--I did not use any means that are not permitted to players to build that up.
Heck, I am now even concerned about Reputation Marks, Dilithium, and Lobi. For one's word to not be good on one currency devalues them all in my eyes and also erases any desire I might have had to begin spending on the game again. As this is, I stand to lose a significant portion of the value of my time, as the exchange rate is not equal to the reward that my Qmendations were supposed to make me eligible for. I would not wish to also lose money.

I understand that I am just speaking for myself here...
I came back after a LONG hiatus just for this event. Of the myriad (and growing) number of grindastic metric titillating "events" you are inflicting on the burdened playerbase, this one was my favorite. So, yeah this hits close to the n u t s.
I lived on Risa during this event. I am a manly masculine man (lol) and I even liked the dancing and castle building (helped facilitate my increased summer alcohol consumption)
Too bad for folks like me I guess.
Another bit of fun that HAD to be sacrificed at the Altar.
Was the Risian Corvette available with the following Summer event? Yes.
Was the Breen Chel Grett available with the following Winter Event after having done the Risian Corvette available with the following Summer Event? Yes.

And the concern here is that each of these things came with consoles that formed a set bonus, and, in the case of the carrier, required the older ships just to have the right to purchase those pets.
So a Delta Recruit will not be able to ever have those set bonuses or those pets. SO the summer event is mostly for those that already have the two old ships, as they will be getting more benefit for their grind than those who do not.
Unless there is some other method planned of acquiring those ships. Which, if that was the case, should have probably come first. Never bury the lead.
Honestly this sounds like an entirely reasonable choice from a game design perspective.
The idea behind shiny new spaceships is to get people excited about playing the game to earn them. This mechanic levels the playing field every time. And for those who just MUST open their Christmas presents a few weeks early, there is the $$$ Lobi option.
And the rewards for pearl stashes are pretty nice, so the folk who planned ahead get something nice, just not what they were expecting.
The recurrent theme in MMOs is that they survive by creating enticements that encourage you to grind the game. I guess I've gotten used to the idea to the point I don't expect to be able to circumvent what is clearly the intended mechanic for acquiring event ships the day they roll out.
If you could max your spec points in a week or get all the new stuff on day 1 there's not a lot of reason to return to play.
As for discontinuing the ships, personally I was never interested in playing them very much (most of my alts have them boxed and unused in the bank, and I don't remember the last time I went back to one). But it does suck for players who like them.
Oh man, this really sucks for new players like myself. I just started the game around Christmas and I was very much looking forward to being able to get the Risan Corvette and cruiser. I know midniteshadow7 said people who've already gotten it will still be able to get them for their alts, but since I wasn't here to run the event last year I will be completely out of luck.
Please, please tell me they aren't going to be removing the ships from the winter event too! I was only able to get the carrier on the two characters I had at the time and since I started so late in the event I wasn't able to work on the other two ships. Now I have several alts and I was *really* looking forward to being able to get those for them this year.
If you started the project last year and did not finish it, you can finish it using the new currency.
Doesn't seem like it:
Can I slot a new project for a Risian Corvette or Risian Luxury Cruiser?
No. These ships are being retired with the start of the 2015 Lohlunat Festival.
What if I don't finish a Summer Reputation project?
All in-progress Summer Reputation projects will be removed at the end of the 2015 Lohlunat Festival.
This is just plain dumb. And that is as polite as I can muster right now. You are just wrapping up a massive event to attract as many new players to the game as possible and then you pull this. You tell a bunch of new people that all this great stuff they have seen other players using and that they have been looking forward to is being taken away so that they can never have it.
And honestly, for all the players who are issuing their "I'm out" threads today, if this is what gets you to leave the game, I think your departure was long overdue...
Yeah, I'm a bit weary of the forum drama every time Cryptic makes a logical game design choice.
"These Risian ships are stupid and worthless! Nobody wants them!"
"Okay, with this year's Summer Event, you won't be able to slot the old Risian ships you hated so much any more."
"No, don't take away the old ships!!"
Jeebus, people, make up your minds! Are the corvette and luxury liner "stupid" and "worthless", a "waste of valuable time"? Or are they something worth throwing a fit over when they leave?
(My vote is in the middle - I got those ships on some of my alts, although I never really found the corvette all that useful, and I'm looking forward to seeing what I can get this year. It's not like my Delta Recruits aren't all going to be at least lvl 50 by the time the event ends anyway - advancement in this game is ludicrously fast.)
After this last anniversary where my alts ran the featured episode to unlock the Kobali costume they each got 400 Qmendations. Even after buying the ship (thanks to the alt-pricing, only 40Q), all my characters are already sitting on 360Q... Meaning, in theory that's 9 years worth of ships, not including any future earnings.
I knew that wouldn't stand.
I don't recall that my toons are sitting on large pile of Lohlunant Pearls (probably only 40ish each), but their retirement doesn't surprise me one bit. I expect similar retirements will be done for the Winter Q Photos and the Anniversary Qmendations I mention above.
I appreciate that you guys are giving us something in exchange!
Opening a store that will accept the Pearls is pretty cool. You could have just made the old currencies invalid and moved-on to whatever may be the new hotness. My alts are the least likely to earn Spec points, so the opportunity to purchase XP with past efforts is nice. Hopefully similar stores will open when/if you retire other event currencies.
New Ship Emotes!
Ok, those are GREAT! I really can't wait for those to be purchasable via GPL. Thanks for being up-front about their eventual offering in the GPL store. I'd much rather spend pearls on XP, anyway, but I also want those cool/finally available ship emotes. Glad I'll (eventually) have my cake and eat it, too!
TL;DR: Not surprised. Pleased with Conversion Store and Emotes. Thanks!
You can find/contact me in game as @PatricianVetinari. Playing STO since Feb 2010.
Bah thanks alot. I really wanted to get the corvette and the cruiser and now I can't cause you guys wont let us. This is not a good way to keep people playing.
Seriously not happy with this move as I am surely not alone in dedicating an Alt to events, which means that the Toon is not level 60 and not able to buy the stuff actually worth buying. At least make the pearls bound to account if you are disposing of them so we can get stuff on more appropriate toons. I also wonder if this move will actually decrease participation in events now as there is no longer any need to do more than the basic needed per day.
Okay, how's this - if you slotted the project on an alt but somehow failed to complete it, well, Bob's your uncle. If you slotted it on a main but failed to complete it (much more reasonable), you can keep doing it. You can't slot a new project for the old ships, however. (And why would you want to? It's not like the Risian Corvette was ever a massively popular choice for an escort...)
And the concern here is that each of these things came with consoles that formed a set bonus, and, in the case of the carrier, required the older ships just to have the right to purchase those pets.
