Upgraded Lockbox ships aren't inferior to T6s ships. Existing lockbox ships lack the 13th bridge officer power once they're upgraded and they don't have a Starship Trait, but they generally have superior hull and shield mods. Additionally a T5-U upgraded lockbox/lobi ship will have 11 console slots vs. a standard T6 ship's 10 console slots.
Catchphrase is "standard" here i guess.
Beta, LTA, CE, Multiple preorder Versions, all Addon Packs except AoY, nearly all KDF/Rom and ~50% of all Fedships, over 25 LockboxShips, Endurer of Atari's "Year of Hell", but...
The current "standard" for ships is 10 consoles, so to the player base "an additional console slot" means that T6 will have 11. If this isn't true that that blog needs to be changed immediately to make it perfectly clear that T6 ships only have 10 consoles.
The "standard" is 9 consoles. The +1 console comes from Fleet, Lock Box, Lobi, Event ships...etc, etc, etc - non-standard/upgraded ships. Just cause folks are dismissive of the 9 console boats doesn't mean they're still not the standard.
But yeah, that blog should make it clear that the T6 boats are standard boats - thus they're the T6 versions of the 9 console T5 boats.
Which basically means we've got the following...
T5-U 10 console
T5-U 11 console
T6 10 console
...and we'll probably see T6 11 console down the road. Fleet T6 within 2 years or so, eh?
So they might also want to clear up some confusion that might have come about for some folks with the pricing for the T5-U upgrades. With that $5 to $10, some folks may have read that as...
T5 9 console to T5-U $10
T5 10 console to T5-U $5
Basically that the upgrade cost would have included the average $5 FSM cost to upgrade to Fleet before doing the T5-U upgrade...
...but there's actually going to be different levels of T5-U; we'll have 10 console and 11 console T5-U boats - which needs to be clear to folks that might think they're getting something other than what they'll end up with, eh?
Lol, which goes back to the question...where's my Fleet Guramba, Fleet Marauder, etc? Cause without them, I can't have T5-U11's...just T5-U10's.
People not being suckered into this terrible idea, and ensuring that T6 ships and Upgrade Modules have abysmal sales? A pipe dream, I know.
*nods*
Its interesting. People will spend around $30-$35 on T6 ships; however, Cryptic can no longer guarantee that they will not go obsolete.
Remember, Cryptic 'advertised' the T5 ships as the 'best ships in endgame'; thus, players bought them thinking they had something of value. Cryptic just pulled a 'bait and switch' tactic.
*shrugs*
What is to stop Cryptic from eventually making T6 ships obsolete? 100%. Regardless about what they may say in public, "Delta Rising" proves that Cryptic cannot be trusted.

Once you start seeing fully developed T6 ships showing up in the queues, it will be the only thing that matters anymore. There is no point in buying T5 and adding fleet and T5-U modules when it is fundamentally less effective and costs just as much as regular T6.
PVP is dead to me until I get around to buying one, if ever.
What is to stop Cryptic from eventually making T6 ships obsolete? If Cryptic is will to make the T5, 5.5, and Fleet ships obsolete, I would not put it pass them to eventually make the T6 ships obsolete.
I now see "Star Trek: Online" as a very risky investment.
We could be having this same conversation within a few months or years.
Why bother?
There's really nothing to stop them from doing anything to us. It's their game, after all. They could shut it down tomorrow and give us all the finger if they wanted.
Why bother...? To have fun, of course. It's just a game.
New question for le Devs: Will there be a UI during the upgrade process that tells us how our T5-U ship will be different from the ship we are about to upgrade? Basically something like the c-store or the shipyard that shows the ship stats like hull, boff seating, # of consoles, etc..
(Because blind upgrades would suck; we need to know exactly what we're getting before pushing that button, even if it's one of the free-to-upgrade ships.)
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
So the TL;DR version of your post is: Serious PVP is pay2win or grindtillyourmad2win and this is good? This mentality (along with the current "anything goes" one) makes me sick.
Should have given up on this much much sooner.
Its not changing and its been that way for over 2 years. Getting all stompy footy about it now is way way late.
No one considers flying a Tholian Carrer a Xindi Bug Hirogen or Elachi scort or a Marauder or Galor or Monbash or a wells or pallisade gouache anymore.
It is what it is. Look up anyones Youtube vid of ANY high end match from the past 2 years and point out one player running something none lockbox. Your going to have a very very hard time doing that. You may find one or two, and that is it.
Ship choice has been lockbox lockbox lockbox or lockbox for a good while. T6 isn't going to change that. For 2-3 months people will try to PvP in there T6 Cstore ships... right up until around the second wave of T6 Lockbox options hits. By that point everyone of the PvP community is going to have lockbox pvp toons again. Honestly it may not even take that long... not to mention any rumors or anything however I suspect the first Delta lockbox is going to cover off Cruiser / Science / Escort classes right out of the gate. High end matches are pretty likely to be...
Delta Lockbox Cruiser + 2 x Delta Lockbox Sci + 2 x Delta lockbox Escort.
If I was a wagering man... I don't think you would want to bet against that.
Quite frankly, if lockbox ships are entitled to a free upgrade, then we fleet ship owners should be entitled to it as well.
The reason they made the decision to include lockbox ship T5-U upgrades for free is simple yet again: profit. With that they're saying, you see, if you spend time and get lucky enough by paying for master keys these ships will always get upgrades. Lockboxes are a scam too, and they want to keep it up by doing exactly that... It makes them a ton more money than people upgrading to fleet version of ships for either $25 dollars, directly or the $5 upgrade after you've bought the ship. In my time, I've opened over 300 lockboxes, and only once gotten a ship. A mirror ship.
Who do I REALLY feel bad for? Poor peeps on a budget who fly mirror ships. From this point forward - anyone who pays more than 50K on a mirror ship on the exchange just totally threw there money away. In fact - I now see zero point to mirror ships at all.
I'm an altaholic. I have 24 lvl 50 characters and I have them all in different ships. A few alts have Mirror ships that I use because I like the look of them. A few others are using the T5 versions of the Temporal Ambassador free ships, the Kamarag and the Support Cruiser Retrofit. I have one other I had just decided earlier today to put into the Obelisk Carrier, which now after reading this, I obviously won't bother with. I also have 18 other T5 C-Store ships that will need upgrading. And that's if the upgrade cost includes all the ships bought in the 3 packs, if it doesn't...
So on top of losing some of my characters "main" ships, I have to fork over an additional $90 to keep my current C-Store ships "competitive"?
Ummm, thanks?
I am not asking for freebies, that some of the ships DO get a free upgrade is pretty nice and I will thank you for that.
But for those folks who have more than even a handful of characters and/or C-Store ships, could we just buy a token for say $20-$25 and that would cover upgrading all our C-Store ships?
While I'm not exactly jumping for joy at how much (little?) upgraded T5-U ships get, I am happy to get any sort of upgrade. But I think it'd be a nice gesture to allow ALL T5 ships to be upgradable, even the free level token ships, the fleet mark only ships the missions reward ships and yes, even the Mirror ships. Perhaps these just would get the increased hit points and either the extra console or the mastery, but not both. My suggestion would be only the console, but that's just me.
And now that I think about it, what about the Vet token ships, are they going to be upgradable?
There were a lot of questions about the upgrading process and now that Cryptic has given us *some* answers, they've opened up a whole new floodgate of questions.
Here's hoping they supply answers to these new questions in a decent time frame.

Buying a T6 ship is very risky.
They are very good at bait and switch. Remember motivation?
Let us wear Swimsuits on Foundry maps or bridges please! I would pay zen for that.
Uh? If you paid FSM for the vessel, it is upgradeable.
Oh, remember that the FPE was renamed with the coming of the fleet system.
Yes.
There's the old Fleet Patrol Escort, which was formerly (at some point) known as the Fleet Escort. With the Tempest, they removed the Fleet Patrol Escort from purchase and added the Fleet Patrol Escort Refit without upgrading the old FPE/FE. The new FPER is mentioned on the list, but the old FPE is not.

I am not paying zen to upgrade a ship that I paid zen for or to upgrade my fleet ships. I am also not going to EC farm to buy a 'zen item' to upgrade the ships that I paid zen for or for my fleet ships. I do not care what other games do or have done.
I get why my free 9 console level up ships are not upgrade eligible. I am a tiny bit disappointed as I like the advanced escort's boff layout better than the multi-vector's, but I probably won't miss it. Why are mirror ships not eligible though? I can understand them being worked on last. I also understand them not being worked on at all, lets face it most of them are on the exchange for nickels. I am disappointed though. For the mirror ships I say just slap a 10th console and a hull and shield boost on them, forget the scaling stuff and the fancy stuff. This should be quick and easy. Shouldn't even need an upgrade mechanic, I just log in one day to find my mirror ship has a new and empty console slot sitting there calling to me.
Thinking about it, I really have no reason to buy another ship, ever. I refuse to pay to keep my purchases relevant and honestly I don't find the new ship stuff all that enticing. So I will go from almost never dying to almost never dying and killing things really fast to killing things really fast. I see no reason to bother with it.
I can only hope that the content in X2 is good, more fun and engaging to repeat than the STFs, and giving out rewards that attempt to match the length of the mission. The mechanics being changed certainly are very underwhelming.
Sometimes I feel like most of sto's playerbase have never played any other mmo's. How can this possibly be a surprise Of course the expansion is going to make everything obsolete, it's what expansions do.
I've played other MMOs. Ones where expansions don't render my gear obsolete. Maybe you just picked the sucky MMOs.
$5-$10 per ship? Ha ha ha ha ha!! Cryptic, you must really be sniffing glue of you expect me to pay that. Many ships I bought from the C-Store (paid once) then bought their fleet versions (paid twice) and now you want to charge me a THIRD time AND the upgraded ship will be not as good?
You must be dreaming!!
Not long to go until Elite: Dangerous is released. A game where one prepayment gives me access to all future content AND the universe is actually a place where you can explore and explore and never see everything? Yes please!! Not like this STO drivel.
They could decide to release a T6 Advanced Long Range Science Vessel based on the Intrepid, for example. That would allow fans of that ship to buy a T6 version of the ship they want to fly.
Some of them might be amazing ships that I'd love to fly... I just have no way of knowing yet.
2) What will they cost?
Given that most T5 ships cost $20-25 each, I'd be okay with $25-30 for a T6 with some reservations.
$50 for a three pack is pretty much my limit. If they release T6's as three packs for $60 or more? I can't really see myself spending that.
One other thing that bugs me, though. Fleet ships are bought on a per-character basis. But the upgrades will be account-wide?
Does that mean if I get a Fleet Defiant on one character and upgrade it, that if I got the Fleet Defiant on another character it would automatically get the upgrade?

I disagree sir. MK XI is considered inferior just as much as 9-console ships. 10 consoles is 'the most endiest game that you can get' so one expects that a new class of T6 ships that will become the new 'most endiest game that you can get' will have more than that just as how MK XIV weapons will become 'the most endiest game that you can get.' I am actually disappointed in the T6 ships now; I was expecting 11 consoles to be standard on them, not something we'll inevitably get later as a T6.5. I'll stick with my 11-console Galor.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
So it's okay for them to rip us off so they could put food on their tables and keep STO running?
You realize what just happened? We now went from buying 2000-2500 Zen ships to 3500-4000 Zen PER SHIP! Ships that are INFERIOR to Tier 6 Ships! Which some expect to be sold for $30.
So if you are a Trek fan who loves a certain canonical Tier 5 ship, forget it!
I did not think the cost had been submitted to the public yet as far as we know its 500 zen to upgrade n 3000 for the new T6 ships. But craptic has been ripping us off with rep changes n crafting change for the people that maxed out the old system. So ill give u that one maybe if more people kicked off with them changes they might have done things diffrent this time. But people did not n stuck up for there changes.
P,s ive not payed for zen since the rep power change n wont unless i feel they have done a good job on the new story n pve missions.
i own every single ship from the C-Store... this is asking me to pay hundreds and hundreds of $
even if i only upgrade the 10 Ships i have on my 10 maxed out Characters that is still $50 - $100 DAY ONE!
i did not play STO in a year now, i want to come back, i really really want... but every time you guys got some new update, you just got to make me angry about some moneygrab.
i would love to say that i won't spend a $... but that'd be an empty threat since i got so much Zen saved up on my account that i won't spend any money anyway... i already did the grinding when i still played the game.
it is just that i would rather see something NEW for the currency i did grind out of this game for years, instead of a numbers update that honestly should simply be earned by in-game progress.
last time i checked the C-Store a month or two ago there was nothing, a year later, NOTHING in there that was worth buying.
no new Uniforms in a year.
no new Bridge/Interior Set in a year.
no new Canon C-Store Ships in a year...
i have easily $150 in Zen sitting on my account and there is nothing to buy.
in fact there was just one new thing at all... a $100 Ship pack with the most ugly non-canon Ships that i've ever seen. (whoever is designing ships for STO, really needs to be replaced by someone who understand that you do not put giant impulse engines on Warp nacelles... that is a Star Trek Ship design NO GO!... i don't understand how CBS can wink those designs through again and again... if i was sitting on the CBS approval end i'd give your ship designers hell, in a friendly, polite and constructive way of course but there would be no Stardestroyer Engines on Romulan Ships and no Impulse Engines on Warp Nacelles and no Phaser beams coming from the rear tip of the odyssey either.)
It is painfully obvious to me that you can not sell me new stuff, instead you try to sell me old stuff with BIGGER NUMBERS.
Now i don't mind some of the older ships getting an upgrade to be Competetive again, but this upgrade will be for all (?) ships, so the balance is unchanged. This is simply a moneygrab and it does not even benefit the game. The Content is too easy anyway... we do not want Tier 6 Ships, we want 3 higher difficulty modes for STFs.
This is all simply disappointing.
"Ship Traits" ?... What is that even supposed to be? I never heard Captain Picard order LaForge to divert emergency power to the ship traits? You aren't even trying anymore, are you? It is all just paperdolls and Crit numbers.
This is an MMO. Should they have to advertise that with level cap increases and a new tier of ships that what was once 'best' won't be like that forever?
Your pain runs deep.
Let us explore it... together. Each man hides a secret pain. It must be exposed and reckoned with. It must be dragged from the darkness and forced into the light. Share your pain. Share your pain with me... and gain strength from the sharing.
This is an MMO. Should they have to advertise that with level cap increases and a new tier of ships that what was once 'best' won't be like that forever?
No, but most MMO's don't try to squeeze extra money out of you for the privilige of progressing your character.

It takes 5 minutes to open a notepad and change the shield hp, "thanks, that will be 15$!!"
So to me an upgraded t5 ship, especially a fleet one, is worth exactly 0.00$, no animations, no skins, no abilities.
What are people paying for, again? Is cryptic getting desperate remembering the crafting-instant-dil-farmville button?

I'll stick with my 11-console Galor.

this. no one should be surprised, it was never going to be free, it was always going to be either dil or zen.
i pity anyone with a fleet ship right now.
P,s ive not payed for zen since the rep power change n wont unless i feel they have done a good job on the new story n pve missions.
even if i only upgrade the 10 Ships i have on my 10 maxed out Characters that is still $50 - $100 DAY ONE!
i did not play STO in a year now, i want to come back, i really really want... but every time you guys got some new update, you just got to make me angry about some moneygrab.
i would love to say that i won't spend a $... but that'd be an empty threat since i got so much Zen saved up on my account that i won't spend any money anyway... i already did the grinding when i still played the game.
it is just that i would rather see something NEW for the currency i did grind out of this game for years, instead of a numbers update that honestly should simply be earned by in-game progress.
last time i checked the C-Store a month or two ago there was nothing, a year later, NOTHING in there that was worth buying.
no new Uniforms in a year.
no new Bridge/Interior Set in a year.
no new Canon C-Store Ships in a year...
i have easily $150 in Zen sitting on my account and there is nothing to buy.
in fact there was just one new thing at all... a $100 Ship pack with the most ugly non-canon Ships that i've ever seen.
Let us explore it... together. Each man hides a secret pain. It must be exposed and reckoned with. It must be dragged from the darkness and forced into the light. Share your pain. Share your pain with me... and gain strength from the sharing.
There's a new ship coming tomorrow.
No, but most MMO's don't try to squeeze extra money out of you for the privilige of progressing your character.
