In WoW there was a really annoying toy that made everyone imitate a train for the duration (emote AND a voice clip). Then the devs added another toy that seeks and destroys it.
Add a "Party neutralizer" where you whip out a phaser rifle and blast that big ball of annoying to smithereens, as well as adding a long CD to the amplifier.
Change it to a device which summons Worf, who looks at it briefly, grabs it, smashes it and then says, "sorry"; and you have a deal.
I don't like the disco party balls either, but this loose interpretation of harassment, discomfort, or stalking is so absurdly overbearing and overly sensitive that it subverts any attempt at a reasonable discussion on the topic.
Now, show us on the doll where the bad disco ball touched you...

sorry, I have to disagree, Azniadeet.....the misuse is clearly harrassment...here is just an example:

Then report it, and the people with that authority will decide if your "harassment" claim is accurate or superfluous, and take the appropriate action. This isn't rocket science.
I have never seen or been near an "Event being hosted" that was spammed by "Disco Balls".
I see them if i happen to be at drozana station for whatever reason or if my team is killing time waiting for the bugged defera city to finish its auto countdown I'll fire a "Disco Ball" off to kill time.
I recall something in DS9 zone chat about "all come to instance 1 for a party by DJ something". so what is the point of these "events" hosted by a DJ if naught to dance?, Just curious.
Indeed, an option to turn them off,
as we found options to turn off continual spamming of balloons and fire extinguishers in the past, would be a good idea:cool:

The point is...choice. You choose to use a discoball waiting for a bugged mission on Defera, you choose to happen to go to Drozana. But there are a lot more places and events that are effected by these disco balls.
Here's a hypothetical for you. If two characters are standing somewhere, doing what appears to you to be nothing and you let off a discoball, because after all, you're just wasting time, why shouldn't they waste time with you. They use the debug command listed in a previous thread, you then take it upon yourself to throw another one. Causing their characters to do what you like when you like it.
Is that their choice? Because they happened to be someplace at a particular time not doing something to your liking?

Maybe "they" are using the terms "event" and "hosted" in a way similar to how "they" have co-opted "harassment" to mean "anything I don't like?"
Yes there is a very simple solution to this imaginary problem. There's over 20+ locations where players can use email/banking/exchange/tailors. So the anti-disco ballers can just use another location rather than the 4 where the DBer's congregate.
So you believe a PC should restrict where they should and shouldn't go ingame? So if I choose to take over say DS9 and fill it with epohh, so you can't move without stepping on one, that's okay, because you'll just go someplace else, is that correct?
It's simple...who ever toggles the Disco Ball gets automatically flagged as attackable by anyone while the ball is active. That would keep it to private events as most who pop it won't want to be ganked.

No, actually I believe a client-side opt-out should be added so all the emo anti-fun people can be sheltered from That Evil Which They Cannot Abide and the players and devs alike can get over this nonsense and work on some real issues.

So you're going on the record with the idea that best answer to "harassment" by disco ballers is not to allow people to opt out, but to enable "counter-harassment" so the Star Trek Online Disco Ball Feud can go on to rival the old record set by the Hatfield-McCoy feud?
Call me a little nutso, but isn't that just extending and expanding the problem rather than doing anything toward solving it?
I've yet to see any argument to allow this that I find persuasive.
The argument I keep seeing is that it would impair A's fun to be rendered unable to act on/against B.
Now, extrapolate that argument to other conditions. This is only a video game emote, but what if we're talking about assault or worse? Suppose the "something" A finds entertaining is torture or murder. Clearly, we wouldn't support A's "right" to act in such cases, but the principle remains constant. If the action is inappropriate in one condition, it is inappropriate in other conditions. Granted, it's an extreme example, but it illustrates the point clearly.
An opt-out would not affect those who do enjoy the forced emotes. It would also not affect deeds. All it would do is remove the offensive animation and loss of control over one's character.
And this is why the anti-disco ball side continues to be a laughing stock with every new thread. "Disco balls are like **** and murder" is simply an insane argument, no matter how you look at it. And it comes up nearly every time.

hypothetically i could win powerball lottery but noy likely to happen.
Question was is why an Event hosted by a Dj would you not expect to be seeing dancing, or is it that this is a role play dance party of some sort?
Should I have the right to go about my business in game without being forced to dance for someone else's amusement? Perhaps.
Should someone have the right to use toys put in game by Cryptic? Again, perhaps.
Point is, we have two sets of rights, both justified to the same degree, but conflicting with each other.
The solution is one of two approaches. It can either be self governing or cryptic can regulate it.
Self governing works, and is the preferred option, provided two things happen.
Those who hate the wretched things avoid areas where they're common, and those who like ghrm stick to avoidable places.
Problems arise when people insist on going to disco ball hotspots and act surprised when the spirit of john Travolta moves them. They also arise when the throwers seek to bypass someone's option not to dance.
I hate the wretched things, but some love them. Thus I do my business in K7 and not Drozana.
As long as K7 remains free of the horrible things then everyone has an option that suits them.

Call me a little nutso, but isn't that just extending and expanding the problem rather than doing anything toward solving it?
Ok, little nutso. I am in fact open to all ideas no matter how...far-fetched they may seem. While there have been some good arguments of what should be done for discoballs, this is simply just another idea on the table. Nothing more. Can it happen currently ingame? No. Will it ever happen ingame? Probably not. Would I partake in something so extreme? Perhaps. Would it solve the problem once and for all? Most likely.
make the Disco Balls attackable by players or just NPCs its a win win but to the one getting their DB killed bet my life Disco Balls would die out after a month
Another baby crying about Disco Balls, ah do you have nightmares already off Disco Balls Chasing you, Ah that's terrible, My advice as a Ships Doctor would be shut off your Computer for awhile read a good book. Do this for a weak and the problems should disappear...
Because there is nothing to do in this god forsaken MMO Grind Fest, that's why people use Disco Balls to at least have some fun round here...
why is he a baby? he doesn't want to be annoyed by the damn things. Neither do I. it's children who never were disciplined when they were growing who are throwing the things to ANNOY PEOPLE.
give me ONE reason why the disco ball should be thrown at the exchange or the shipyard with the single exception of ANNOYING EVERYONE AROUND THEM?
Its people the likes of you who ruins the enjoyment of mmo game. In fact, why are you even in this STO if you do not like to have fun and enjoyment? Sure, it's annoying at times, but I get used to it.
so everyone else should be annoyed because YOU think it's fun.. mkay I keep forgetting the world revolves around YOU.
maybe they should make the disco balls usable only by subscribers... the the F2P trolls would go to another mmo
This comes up over and over in many games, I can't fathom why developers don't seem to get it.
Here's what I said over at Lord of the Rings Online. It applies equally here:
And I'll say to you what I would say in any other large social RPG.... you're not the Game Organization Director... you do not have complete control of the environment and cannot dictate the environment. If you want to, may I suggest going to a RPG where you can in fact control the environment. Otherwise stay in this one, and incorporate the environment and what is happening into your roleplay.
I'd like to add another little idea, because I also am so opened minded. When a disco ball is dropped, player immediately becomes target to attack, but all players attacking said target immediately activate a self-debuff called "Cold-Blooded Killer" (duration: 15 minutes) where offending toon is pummeled with snowballs continuously (with 30% chance of knock-down).
Since needless bloodshed is against Federation standards, and attacking an unarmed dancer is also an honorless kill, both factions should be on board.
Then it's a good thing I'm part of the Romulan faction, huh?
That is an interesting idea, Nabreeki. One more option to throw on the table.
I think I would also add to your idea, and say there should be an accolade attached.
To Boldly dance like a puppet on a string...
To mess up the screen, so you can't see a thing....
Is that what this game has become?
I would like to point out that some individuals and groups are using the "party amplifier"[disco ball] and other devices to flagrantly break some rules in Terms and Conditions that are clearly stated on the site -
15.
f. stalk, threaten or otherwise harass or cause discomfort to another;"
They spam the party amplifier [disco ball] and other devices continuously, to the point where any social gathering or event in a public place becomes unpleasant, the screen becomes just a mess, unpleasant to look at, thereby forcing these events to be moved to "invite only"ships or bases. [This is unfortunate as the limit of players allowed on ships is very small compared to a public area, and bases can not invite different factions, thus limiting the players choice]
Of course, one can and does report, but how many reports are needed before it becomes clear that something needs to be done about this? This has been going on for a year approx....
As it is clear that some of these devices are open to abuse by some, the devs would be wise to address this matter.....
how in the hell does a harmless device like a disco ball amp come to the point of breaking a term of service regulation? and the one you pointed out has absolutely no relevance to the disco ball.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
