A simple solution, put packs of Q marks in the C-Store, that way folks have a clear choice to grind for the ship or pay for it, or even do a bit of both. Rather than making it another stupid gamble for those who don't want or have the time to grind.
Those who don't want to do either? Could always give them a trimmed down version for 600 marks, that way they can claim it after a single run through, but wont have the whizzy extras which are driving the change to a grind. They can carry on having the poor cousin version as per the Odyssey, Ambassador and even the Obelisk.
They'll still complain though. lol
That is a good point, give us a free ship, maybe we like it and then decide to grind for the supper ubber, doopler trooper cooper ship.
Did you bother to hear our points or you just are a pawn of Cryptic to shut us up?
Did you really bother to read what you wrote? Dude that is plain nonsense, for 3 years we have received free ships and now is that CBS noticed it? Oh please shut the hell up.
I'm no pawn of cryptic. I've seen the points and I honestly think they are childish.
I'm just someone who works hard in order to get what he wants on the game. I'm using my 4 max level toons in the battle zone in order to grind up dilithium. Everything I have on my account today (4 extra character slots, Armitage, 2 Boff slots on my main, Ar'kif Tactical warbird retrofit for Romulan, account bank) are the result of me spending time grinding dilithium in order to make the most out of my time on the game.
I wasn't here for the first year, but I'm pretty sure that they started giving away free ships with the 2nd and 3rd anniversary. The fourth anniversary ships are above the usual standard free ships. I'm someone ready to get the ships for all my characters.
Finally, to those complaining about having to grind the FE over and over: You Don't. The FE gives a 1 time reward of 400 Qmendation. The usual daily that comes with the anniversary will offer the rest of the tokens you'll need. The reason why they do the whole 20 hour cooldown with any of these things is so that you'll have to log in every day to complete it. It goes back to the point of not being able to get the ship right away from grinding away repeatedly.
Does this really justify forcing players to engage in a tedious, pointless and monotonous tasks they clearly don't enjoy for over two weeks?
Was there ever a single person who would say "horray, I can finally run around a virtual frozen lake for a few minutes on every character every day for several weeks!" ? Or "horray, I can finally run around the Academy finding miniature Q's hidden in present boxes several times per character every day for two weeks!" ?
So far the response to this event reputation has been negative and the only statements in Cryptic defense are in the line of "It's just a few minutes a day, it's not like it's gonna hurt you". I don't think I've actually seen anyone saying they're actually looking forward to this daily mission (which I still assume is the same one as last year, which I personally dreaded).
I can't even imagine anyone at Cryptic saying "Yes, surely players will enjoy doing this tedious minigame every day for two weeks". No. If I were to guess it was more like "Let's force players to do something tedious and repetitive so they'll get bored fast and will buy some Master Keys for our brand new Lock Box and then they'll get their Qmendations from the Lobi Store $_$".
Honestly, it's amazing how Cryptic constantly manages to suck out all the fun out of their game.
"No, you can't play the content you want even though you log in every day! Now back to the hamster wheel with you!".
I would rather be able to obtain (free of grind) standard T5 ships with an optional grind to get the T5.5 versions. That or a Fleet version of these ships that costs Fleet Modules.

Good for you, but tell Cryptic to remove the word FREE from the offer, just said we will have the opportunity to obtain a ship after finishing the grinding, don't come and say we are getting a FREE ship but we need to do some grinding, these are two totally different things.

Are they?
Nobody is forcing us to pay cash for them. The only fee (if that) is time, and we already give that freely over to them when we play the game. The ships ARE free, they just require work to get them.
I don't agree with Cryptic's method on these ships, but they're right in stating they're free cause ... they are.
My meaning was that I love it because it's true, when I shouldn't love it because this shouldn't be happening. We shouldn't be grinding for an anniversary ship.
Ah. I was hoping there would be some story behind it, like the time my wife, right before Christmas said "I want that blender." A particular one, she even listed the reasons she liked it. I dutifully went back and bought it, wrpped it up and... well, let's just say Christmas Morning, Mrs Bergins was NOT impressed that I had bought her an appliance for Christmas...
At least she had asked for it and I didn't make her work to get it, though!

I'm sure that as we learn about these new ships, you guys will stop overreacting. At least wait until you see what the ships can do before you start erupting like volcanoes.
Oh my!
Can't... stop... laughing...
You haven't been around here long, have you?
I once again match my character. Behold the power of PINK!

Do you even know what FREE means? I give you something for free means free no string attached, to get this FREE ship you need to grind for 16 days, is that free? NO, if you don't grind you don't get the ship, so what is FREE about it?

Yes. You also get a FREE pay check every month for going to work every day...

By your argument, we should get these ships the second we wake up. Someone should be standing over us and, once we've come too, should then present us with a free ship for doing nothing (though, even then you'd have done something; you'd have moved a couple of muscles, god forbid). :P
The free ships you speak of still required something out of you, you had to warp to a specific destination, or play through a specific episode, so were they ever (by your definition) free to begin with?
The fact is, you've always had to do something for your free ships, be that level up, run a certain mission, or log in for 25 days straight to run a race or whatever. By that definition, nothing has ever been given free, and this isn't really a F2P game.
I think you should forget about the blender. Your wife wasn't very happy with it.
I remember reading an article somewhere, a while ago (related to Christmas). In said article it stated that if a women ever tells you she likes something leading up to Christmas, don't ever buy it. :P I can't remember the reason now, something to do with appreciation I think?
^^^^ THIS and ^^^^^ THIS again, so far no one single response from the devs about our dislike of this unnecessary grind. Do you just want us to buy the ship? Just come out and say so, put it in the C-Store and we will buy it, but don't sugarcoat it with the term "FREE"
The problem that Cryptic would have if they just put the ships in the Z-Store is that we players would expect them to be offered for about $20.00 each and be account wide unlocks.
With the method that they are going with they are hoping that the players that must have the new hotness ASAP will shell out for more lock boxes just to get the Lobi for the commendations to the tune of potentially hundreds of dollars.
The sad part is that the above happens.
I saw quite a few Breen Raiders flying around on the very 1st day of the Winter Even.
The average price of a Lobi store ship is $200.00; I'd imagine that to outright by an event ship with lobi must cost at least twice as much.
I know that this is a F2P game and all options must be explored when looking for new routes to bring in more revenue but looking for ways to fleece the player base by using an Anniversary even is just hitting a new level of wrongness. (Right up there with the JHDC and its Hanger Attack Ships)
last year i did a mission got my ship i did not have to do it 100 more time to get the ship when i got to do the same mission for X number of day that more like a job the same job that can land me a JHAS if i want that job
It's a very nice blender. 14 speeds, glass, it's lasted at least 11 years (up to 15, just know we had it before we left Maine). It has made plenty of milkshakes and outher such yummies.

Third, Brandon also stated that there's a reason why they implemented the ships behind the event reputation grind. Think about previous events that they've given a special ship away. CBS didn't want everyone able to be able to fly non-faction ship that was given away, so when they started to offer the Breen ships, they introduced the whole 1000 pictures of Q to be traded in. This eventually got tied into the event reputation introduced during the spring and summer when they offered the Risian corvette.
The Obelisk waves hello and sends warmest regards. So do the Chel Grett, Plesh Bekk and the Risian corvette. And I even see the odd JHAS with a shy smile waving from behind.
The CBS don't want it point is moot, it has been moot since the first time the Chel Grett came around, it's time people realize this.
EDIT: P.S. This year these are actually faction specific ships.
The whole 'CBS don't want people flying alien ships' is a joke to be fair. The number of alien ships being flown must be a good 50% of players by now. A good portion of people playing this game must own at least one non-faction specific vessel.
Disclaimer; I don't know for a fact that it is/isn't 50%, I'm estimating. However there have been two Christmas events with Breen Ship Rewards, a Summer event with a Risian Reward, alongside countless Lock Box Ships. It's a fair conclusion.

Let's not forget the Obelisk Carrier giveaway.
Now, THAT was a giveaway...

ok, yes, I choose to do this or that.. (and honestly, I sometimes go crazy to grind stuff, then I get burnt out and take a break from it..)..
but.. the way they have designed this game is that you need to do these grinds to stay competitive, and to get your endgame gear.. no one (and you cant argue this), but no one, plays to be mediocre.. everyone wants to excel, and keep up with the guys who havnt seen the light of day in a few years.. they design this game so If you don't do their grinds, you are punished..
yes, I choose to either grind and get my passives and my stuff, or I might as well uninstall the game, cause I wont have anything worth a damn if I don't.. that is what it boils down to...
so don't go toating that its ok for them to only release grind material cause its up to us to figure it out.. no.. im not saying that a little grind her and a little grind there is bad.. but when 3/4's of your ******ned game is a grind, that is a problem. it shows that there is a lack of vision, a lack of interest, and a lack of know how on the developers end..
I play other games that have a superb blend of grind, and fun, and necessity.. this game is all grind and necessity for it, if you wish to keep up with it..
Which is fine. I agree with most of that. But please, do not put words in my mouth: I did not, have not, and will not say that the grind here (any of them, or this specific one) are acceptable.
I said that to claim that the 'daily grind' is required is false: you can beat every encounter in this game in blue XI gear off the AH with a good team and decent understanding of the fights and mechanics. There is no endgame that requires the purple XII sets, all they do is cut the time down and make it easier to win even if the team is uncoordinated or unskilled or whatever. Nothing is required. There are games where the top content requires the top gear. This is not one of them.
Point is, when it stops being fun and becomes a job, its not a game anymore. I will soon have my rep perks (hitting ranks 3&4 now); that is a very easy grind. Its the gear that is slow, needs too much dil and FC and EC and elite runs and marks and.... meh. I will get there, at my own pace, having fun or putting it down if it becomes not fun. I am not driven to have any particular pixels on my screen in any hurry, because I have been down that road, burned myself out, and learned from it -- that is not for me, not anymore.
The reality is it doesn't matter how good the ships are, the problem is the method of obtaining them.
They're taking the anniversary celebration and turning it into another grind. In my opinion, that's a big middle finger to the entire STO community.
What's the real point here? To make us go through something tedious so we feel better about the ships they're giving us? To limit the amount of people who can obtain the ships?
Is there an actual good reason for any of this other than "to make it arbitrarily feel more special"?

Agreed, if we have not come out of a big grind fest with the Winter Festival and Cryptic would have said there are 2 ships a cheap version you get off the bat and a T5.9 that requires grinding I would have been fine, but grinding is not the name of the game, this is not GTO it is STO.
The anniversary ship was never the most overpowerd of overpowered super mega dreadnoughts or anything, but it was nice that it was a ship I could look forward to each year without grinding for weeks like we have to do for every other ship and event in the game. It was "unique". Like a special thank you for sticking it out for so long. It's too bad to see the event is now just another grind like everything else is these days.
