No offense Brandon, but God I REALLY hope so.
I really need to get excited about the game again.
It's starting to becoming more of a chore at late than entertainment for me.
I don't know if it's because we're fresh off the holidays, or the fact that the East Coast where I live, has had one blizzard after another, paired with arctic vortexes = an endless stretch of subzero temps, or the fact that work's been a real biach lately.
But I'm in a funk BIG time lately.
I'm in desperate need of entertainment on my free time and the very last thing I need ATM is a grindfest on top of another grindfest, fresh from the latest grindfest.
I also live in the eastern side. And i have to say its a little bit of all that for me.
Plus the fact that new content is played and explored in two hours or less.
Inertia just means you can do Powerslides in you carrier!

I have no problems with grinding daily if the ship is cool. And by Cool I mean a decent boff layout and something that makes it not only practical, but something you HAVE TO TRY.
The Breen Chel Gret - awesome ship. Well worth the effort to achieve. Literally one of the best ships in the games - hands down. Works for all play styles and captains. A MUST have for any collection.
Speculation time
But if they are as cool as they look in the promo art, especially if the background hints at one of its abilities (Multiphasic Shielding or Metaphic Shielding) which would allow a starship to survive the surface temperatures of a star.
How such shields might fare in combat, or against the newly enhanced Undine, are clearly yet to be seen.
One other possibility. Given Cryptics 'casual' use of the Omega particle - something so dangerous that starfleet has a special 'Prime Directive Override' to deal with it.....

Don't you think that players who are grinding in the game for 1 year deserve the gift from Cryptic?
I am sick and tired of grinding, we had winter event and i grinded every day on my 4 toon for ship and i didn't complain, guess i wanted to grind, but on anniversary of STO which is by the way Birthday of the franchise they want to grind us for the gift, that is just playing stupid and irresponsible to players saying we don't give a **** about you.
Anniversary is about admitting that players are truly matter and that they are not some server statistic to brag about how many players are online.
So if the logic is right and it is, on my Birthday Cryptic should pay me cause i must pay them (Grind) to get "Free" gift..... that is just really really stupid
I boycotted the Winter event but as long as there are 4 cats kissing and praising Cryptic, they are not going to stop the grinding process.
Me too. I can't understand how in the world someone can think that doing the same thing every day, 15-20 days in a row (or whatever) is a fun. And I can't understand how in the world the owners of this game don't want me to have fun with their game.
I got Risan Corvette on 3 toons, it was fun to fly over the island and it was summer time anyway so I had more time.
I completely hated the fastest game on ice, so no Breen ship for me, although I'd like one.
Sadly I'm skipping anniversary ship as well. Out of my 6 toons only one is Sci anyway, so no big deal.
But I do hope owners of this game are really doing their homework and analysing carefully what percentage of gamers is using this content vs what's the investment into the content, coz I am subscriber and I want my money to be well spent by owners.
P.S.: I prefer "owners" as opposed to "devs", I believe there are some business owners responsible for financial results and those are the people making decisions
There's another problem with the idea of us having to "earn" the ships this way: it's lazy design.
We know it'll be a short mission that's relatively frivolous/pointless like a shell game or running in a circle. It's so pointless that the mission doesn't really matter, we know it'll only take like 5 minutes to do. So what the devs are telling us is that they have this set up solely to put a time gate on us.
We don't have to defeat anyone important, accomplish any real goal, or advance any bit of story. You just have to wait out the 20hr cooldown to push your buttons a couple times.
It's simply an arbitrary time-sink. If we had to go through 15 episodes of some story mission, I doubt anyone would complain. Whether they didn't have the time, resources, ambition, or just didn't care enough, they didn't go that route. What they did is hook up a small meaningless mission to a 20 hour cooldown to artificially create 15 days of "content".
It's entirely about making us wait 300 hours to get the "gift". (Unless you pay with lobi, of course)
I already have the dreaded graphics bug which means I have to restart the client every 10 minutes, I don't think I'll be adding another grind to that as well.
I'm sure there are many others who will happily grind away for the toys, good for you guys if you enjoy it then "fill yer boots".
I'll just be a spectator :P
EDIT: Lately I'm saddened by how increasingly disappointed I feel about STO and its current direction.
I already have the dreaded graphics bug which means I have to restart the client every 10 minutes,
Yeah, nothing beats respawn in Elite STF with invisible escort ship which you can't aim properly.
But maybe with this "lazy" approach (as someone pointed out) to anniversary content, they'll have more time to fix the graphics bug. It started recently so they should be able to back-track the changes they've done that are causing this - if they want, that is.
I'm a bit surprised that people are hit so unprepared. I mean Cryptic is owned by a Chinese games company which - big surprise - has nothing BUT (literal) "Asia-Grinders" in its reportoir and STO is their great experiment establishing the model in the "western market" (something that never really worked before). You cannot be that shocked about the games' development.
Sure, all those PR messages posted by devs that dance around the issue like Kevin Costner around his wolf are annoying but keep in mind that the devs/employees are not free to speak, at least not via official accounts and channels.
^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^
"No. Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects... and claw at you." -Worf, son of Mogh
"A filthy, mangy beast, but in its bony breast beat the heart of a warrior" - "faithful" (...) "but ever-ready to follow the call of the wild." - Martok, about a Targ
"That pig smelled horrid. A sweet-sour, extremely pungent odor. I showered and showered, and it took me a week to get rid of it!" - Robert Justman, appreciating Emmy-Lou
Hrmshfn... I'm now very glad that I ignored the Winter Event (apart from Doffing for dil and outfits) and concentrated on finishing the Dyson rep on all my alts. These ships at least look like they belong with their respective factions, so hats of to the Devs for expanding the Klingon and Romulan ship bases instead of another generic ship.
I'm not mad keen on the grind but IMO the reward is more meaningful than the "obsolete on release" basic Bortas and Kamarag of the past two events. Plus we get an episode (with a guest voiceover!), which is *far* more than we got for the first two anniversaries. The feature episode in itself is enough of an anniversary celebration, IMO.
I'm, also 90% sure that, post-event, these ships will join the previous anniversary ships as purchasable vessels; it looks like too much development work not to monetize in some way. Really the only players who will come off badly are the pokemon-collectors who "gotta catch 'em all" for all alts. This is not like the full reps where failure to complete leaves your alt weaker than others.
Nobody held a gun to your freakin head to make you have a zillion toons. Thus, no one is really making you "grind" but yourself. It's your damn fault you put yourself in this situation. And its not really something you "have to do".

Pretty much 2014 is a defining year where it's decided that STO either shifts back to a Western-style MMO or completes it's transformation into an Eastern-style MMO.
They said they would work with us to find a happy medium between East and West, but for 2013 it was all about grinding for content and ARC. So what will this year bring? So far it's not off to a good start with more grinding and bugs galore. At this rate STO is a goner in a year or two. Well, at least Star Citizen is on the horizon.
guess this means i have to reserve another 20 odd days for hour a day to these baseless grinds. i honestly thought getting the ship would be a simple matter of heading to a contact and getting the proverbial keys to the ship and be done with it.
is that how you get anything you want, you don't need to work for it you just go to the outlets and they just give you the stuff?
I must give that a try. :O
I do find it kind of shallow and pedantic that the anniversary event has been turned into a grind.. what happened to having a featured episode that rewarded you with it at the end.. and why does cryptic think the player base loves the grind? I mean when sitting around the table, do they all chuckle when they come up with a new grind.. saying " oh, this will really get them in an uproar"? cause at this point, they know its not very popular.. (and cryptic, there is a difference between people doing the grind cause they want something and liking the grind..)..
or perhaps they are just fed up with some players who like a free ride and only log in when there is some item up for grabs and hardly ever play at any other time?
anyhow I kind of like the grind, it is how you hone your skills by repetition repetition repetition if you do a thing often enough it becomes second nature and I sure found out that I could do something that I thought was beyond my skills with the winter event.
besides I would hardly class a thing you do for 2 minutes a day for 25 days a grind?
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
(and cryptic, there is a difference between people doing the grind cause they want something and liking the grind..)..
That doesn't change the fact people are still doing them.
I still find it disappointing that the anniversary event is having a grind tagged on to it, and expectations/ demands are going to be even higher if you're turning it into this.
I think that Cryptic is missing the whole point of why many people love holiday/special events. Speaking for myself, the main reason why I like them so much is because they're meant to be a nice, fun break from the normal every day grind. All MMOs have a grind to varying degrees and the events were always something I looked forward to because it breaks it up a bit. Lets the playerbase unwind and goof off so to speak.
By adding in these ridiculous 1000 point 2-3 week rep grinds, they effectively defeat the entire purpose of special events. Instead of relieving the daily grind, Cryptic is just adding to it. And that just sucks the fun out of everything. Instead of thinking "Sweet, a new event is coming up!" I just think "Bah, another grind to skip." I don't think that's the proper way to handle special events at all. And it bugs me since STO is literally the only MMO that I've played that does this. All the rest seem to handle their events fairly well.
I'm right there with you lan, I don't mind the reputation grinds in the game per say nor I care about the summer/winter ships being gated like that. I didn't do the winter one and I have no intention of doing this one. And frankly, I don't have the need for anymore ships. Like I said before, the good old ones will have to suffice. *hugs his Galaxy*
The thing is, this was suposed to be a celebration, a testament to the success of the game, a time of fun and joy for everyone - devs. and players alike. We get a new cool FE and a gift at the end, because it's a celebration. It's not about what the gift is, it's about the thought and the celebration. The guy who posted the wife analogy was spot on.
There's no better way to ruin a nice FE with a cool actor like Tim Russ than making your players do it hundreds of times in 2 weeks for a "gift".
is that how you get anything you want, you don't need to work for it you just go to the outlets and they just give you the stuff?

T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
Allright. So we get this. Another grind. How about no?
Seriously, I get some very strong feelings reading this. I read most of the thread, so I know about the free stuff after it.
But let me get this straight. PLAYING THE EXACT SAME MISSION 16 TIMES FOR A SHIP THAT WILL PROBABLY BE NICE BUT NOTHING ANYONE REALLY NEEDS?!?
Hey Devs, how about you watch Star Trek: First Contact 16 days. You'll get a Borg Cube model after that, with a small Borg Sphere inside of it! If you don't feel like forever destroying the fun of that movie for you, you can always give me all of your money and get the cube! Ow, if none of the above pleases you, don't worry, we will give you a 2 cm Borg Drone model for free. And without anything asking in return. Ow, and if any of your relatives want the cube as well, they better also watch the movie 16 times.
That is basically what is happening right here. Nobody needs the Borg Cube model. Ofcourse, it will be pretty nice to have it, but will you die if you don't get it? And is a model really worth forever destroying one of the most loved Star Trek movies of all time?
The devs offer us a ship NOBODY really needs. Sure, it'll probably be excellent in combat. But as for a sci ship, my Sci is still pretty content with the way the Nebula performs. In fact, all of my characters have ships that perform just the way I want them to perform. So I'll probably skip this one.
Next to that, they ruin an episode for us. I guess that the anniversary mission will be pretty good (that is why I referenced to First Contact instead of, say, The Final Frontier). And if its a good mission, I'll enjoy playing it. Hell, I'll probably enjoy the "replay" on all of my 6 characters. But to play the exact same mission over a hundred times (6 chars) will only lead to one, inescapable conclusion: the mission will forever be associated with GRIND.
And then ofcourse, the time that grinding takes. I don't mind grinding, I worked my way up to several C-store ships through Dilithium. But I could take the time. I can't for these ships. There is a pretty strict time limit for an event that happens to start in the exact same week that I will need to continue my study. I used to play STO for hours every day. But due to my study, I can't even log in every day. This has lead me to miss the Breen ships. And I am fine with that. But I really was hoping for a great opportunity to play a mission once, and get a cool ship. I simply won't find the time to be able to do this. I have other things in my life: study, work, friends, family, scouting etc etc. And STO isn't my only game.
All in all, I usually don't rage on the forums, and I usually try to be as constructive as possible in my posts. Hell, even this post is argumented, even though the rage. But this decision is just this one thing.
The only thing that might safe this, is if anybody can confirm that the Qmendations are account-bound at the max. If these are character bind, I'm forgetting all about these ships. But if I can do the mission for the first time on all of my 6 chars and get the 400 Qmendation boxes as account-wide (if not unbound at all), I will go for some of them.
But I simply refuse to grind a mission to hatred forever just to get a ship I don't really need.
I'm currently in a break from STO due to burnout from the Winter Event. The Summer Event zapped my interest in playing for about two months. Adding another 25 times in 40 days event seems to be a recipe for more burnout.
I may just hit the brakes this time myself and say no, I already did the winter event recently only to find myself shelving the ship after just a couple hours in it, and as for this? odds are against it, thankfully I'm nearing my scimitar bundle so I'll have little reason to fly anything else again anyway.
Like others on here, I also hope that the ships will be available by other means, like C-Store or fleet.
If it is fleet though, I hope they put the ship at Tier 1 or 2 shipyard or Spire, since that is more sensible, as most fleets have atleast Tier 1/2 shipyard by now. Putting it at Tier 5 shipyard would not be such a good idea, since there are not that many at Tier 5 yet...
After a good nights sleep this is still insane. Cryptic encourage players to have more than one character i.e. Fed, Kling and Rom then the 3 classes. I've got 20 toons so I'm really put off the idea of another 15+ days grinding for these toons.
What makes it worst is that Cryptic has a mechanic in the game to make it easier for players with multiple alts but haven't used it in the winter event and I doubt they will use it in the anniversary event . This is the sponsorship system. If only one toon got the ship and could sponsor the other toon say with EC and not Q marks, even if the other toons had to play the mission just once I'm sure many players would be happier.
Another option would be if player who are Lifetime subscribers or have subscribe for over 1400 days got the ship for free on all their toons.
But I doubt this will happen because its just a simple money grab by Cryptic as the want people to buy the Qmarks from the Z-store.
I for one would not want to wish Cryptic a happy 4th Anniversary. It's not a happy joyous time, it's more like the 4th year of a life time prison sentence. Cryptic you sure know how to put people off playing your games.
I seriously hope it will not be like the winter/summer events, making us grind like crazy for a paltry 40 Qmentadtions.... That would suck...
From what I can see that is EXACTLY what it will be like...
Tyr shall give me strength! For the glory of Tempus! I am the hands of Shar! Flames of Kossuth, protect me! Oghma, grant me knowledge! Lolth commands, and I obey!
Meh, I'm actually ok with it. At first I wasn't sure, now I'm fine with it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still recovering from the Summer Event. I hated it. The summer event was not fun. I'm not talking about the whole thing, it was fun enough, I'm talking the Rings. It took forever on my 8 characters. Like 1-1.5 hours a day. I didn't have time to farm for any of the other Holiday items. (I did set aside some time after I got my ships for my main to get some of it done, and I bought a lot of the rest off the exchange so it wasn't a total loss... but it was time not spent socializing and having fun at the summer event) It might have gone faster if I had bought faster jetpacks for all my alts... but I didn't because I couldn't really spare the time to farm for them. My main got one, but only after I got my Corvette.
The Winter Event... I don't mind that one really at all. About half way thru I start mildly grumbling, but that is about it. It takes me 20-30minutes a day to run my 8 characters. That is plenty of time left over to explore the rest of the event. I had time to do just about everything I cared to do. I didn't 100% the event, but I certainly could have.
Actual mechanics of the events aside, I have to admit it *WAS* a little anti-climactic that day years ago when I got back from my "First Flight" of the Odyssey prototype, fresh from my battle with the Bortas, and warped into an ESD full to the brim with people in my brand new prototype ship... Thematically.... yeah. It fell short.
So what is the alternative to everybody and their brother getting the special fancy new ship all at the same time after snapping a finger? Some sort of trial. Some sort of variable length delay. Something to keep everybody on the planet from trying to experience the same moment at the same time. Convenently, a system for doing just that exists in the game currently, as it is how we manage the holiday ships. You can't vary too strongly on the cost (in time) because the value of a free ship has already been established by the holiday event (25 days grind for a 10 console ship).
So yeah, I'm ok with the concept of a "grind" for a free ship. Keeps them a little exclusive, so not everybody gets them. It makes them a bit more special. It's not really like these ships should be falling like leaves from the trees. I just hope the part that has to be repeated is not too tedious.
90 minutes of slow-flying around to those damnable rings gives me bloody fits....
I once again match my character. Behold the power of PINK!

But I simply refuse to grind a mission to hatred forever just to get a ship I don't really need.

idk why but Tovan comes to mind when i saw this post Tuvok is the next Tovan lmao
system Lord Baal is dead
If it is fleet though, I hope they put the ship at Tier 1 or 2 shipyard or Spire, since that is more sensible, as most fleets have atleast Tier 1/2 shipyard by now. Putting it at Tier 5 shipyard would not be such a good idea, since there are not that many at Tier 5 yet...
