Oh, I have a wide array of ships, some original, some not.
Among my worst are the ships owned by my first Engineer. Each is named after one of the Divines from The Elder Scrolls lore; Arkay, Akatosh, Julianos, Zenithar, Stendarr, Mara, Dibella, Kynareth, and Talos.
I have a tactical toon flying the USS Uriel Septim as well, the name of an important Emperor and historical figure also from the Elder Scrolls.
Others are a little more thoughtful. For example, one of my science toons commands the USS Wild Hunt. Figured it made sense since it's an Escort Carrier, and I liked the sound of it.
Another toon commands the USS Raleigh, a sort of dual name as it represents both the state capital of my home state, as well as Sir Walter Raleigh.
Then of course there's my main tactical toon commanding the USS V'nashir. It is named after a character my girlfriend plays occasionally in Elder Scrolls titles. Incidentally, the ship's registry number corresponds to her character's birth era and year (with the addition of the 9 in front to meet STO standards).
I have various other ships; IKS Erinyes, after the three Furies; IKS Essenthor, a name I made up; USS Pentacle, named for the unfortunately misunderstood five-pointed star symbol often associated with Satan; USS Highmoss, named for another of my girlfriend's TES characters; and the USS Manchester, which has a funny story behind it. The character is sort of a gag character named Rip Manslab who was named in the tradition of this MST3K clip. I then claimed my TOS Connie to start him out. Naturally I LOL'D HARD when the name of my Generic Manly Man ship was the USS Manchester. Get it? Man chest? Get it?! So I kept it. Currently it is on its -D iteration, the only ship I have higher than a -B.
My ship names was worst when i start the game , like: U.S.S. Not TRIBBLE Enough , I.P.Freely , smelly belly etc...
But i changed them to Grim Reaper and Oberon( and people start to steal name oberon quite often).
However, said fact will not stop me rolling my eyes and sighing each time I see a 'USS Enterpr1se' and reporting players using foul/offensive language in their ship names.
Yeah you are right with that. I mean, i have no problems against the "less known" names. I mean USS Cairo or USS Hood or Bellerophon or Valiant or Kyoto or New orleans or whatever name that we heard in tng, ds9, tos or whatever, I don't have a problem against that, hell i even find it sometimes cool that I see a person flying an excelsior with the naam USS Hood.
But to see hundreds of ships called ent3rpris3 or like you've said is indeed sometimes a bit stupid or makes you roll your eyes.
The faulty languages in ship names is a no go for me. People that have that should get a warning or a temp ban until they change the name.
For my science character I named my ships after famous scientists, including the U.S.S. Lovelace (after Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer), and was asked if I had named it after a TRIBBLE star.
On my tactical, I named them after siege weapons - Catapult, Trebuchet, and so on. The exception to this is my VA ship, the U.S.S. Nightingale, but that is named after a Gatling Gun from an Pens/Paper RPG I play. Also, as she is Joined Trill, I thought it kinda fitting to name my Captain's Yacht the U.S.S. Symbiont.
My V'Quv on my KDF was called the I.K.S. Bah'Tel'Stah (or Battlestar) after Galactica.
I'm rather disappointed by how many characters I see running around with the same names as mine. I've seen at least 4 Mirandas (my science), 2 Jinxs (my tactical), and 3 or 4 Nightingales. So far as I know, I was the original for each of them, so shoo! Go away copies :P
Aegis (Connie Refit)
Andromeda (Miranda - name it came with)
Archon (Steamrunner)
Columbus (Captain's Yacht)
Daedalus (Odyssey)
Damocles (Fleet Excelsior)
Epsilon (Sovereign)
Magellan (Class F Shuttle)
Pegasus (Intrepid)
Tempest (NX)
Valkyrie (Defiant)
also,
I.K.S. Dakronh (Vor'cha Retrofit) - named after Chang's prototype B'rel
I.K.S. Gorig (K't'inga Retrofit) - the name it came with
I.K.S. Kordoth (General's Chariot) - the name it came with
I.K.S. Korrd (B'rel Retrofit) - named after General Korrd (STV)
My Sci KDF has ships named after Science Fiction authors - so far she has the Gibson, the Asimov, the Harrison and the Fontana

Those are some good names and I like the klingon one!
Yeah in the beta I just called them towards some old fed characters but now I just call them towards my friends (they play the game too) and they are customized how their characters look like.
I don't mind seeing certain Star Trek ship names from the series but I do kinda find it annoying when there is around 3... all the same... in the same place... at the same time... lol
when I hit Captain so very long ago on my main Rachel V. Johnson, I picked my nice lovely Long Range Science Vessel, named it U.S.S. Pegasus like all my ships previously... after a while I noticed that "Pegasus" was really popular... so I used my Captain LRSV all the way till VA then got my LRSV retrofit.
I later named the retrofit, U.S.S. Cutty Sark, I'm English and I drink alot of tea "well duuhh!" so I felt it was fitting.
similar story to my KDF alt, science character and always used a Bird Of Prey called... I.K.S. Bippity... then when I hit LG, I picked the B'Rel retro... I named that I.K.S. Thermopylae in contrast with Cutty Sark.
I feel original but there could be a couple of Cutty Sarks out there... I've only ever met one other player with that ship name. unlike when I saw the other "U.S.S. Pegasus's" I was generaly pleased I wasn't the only one with Cutty Sark.
Well, I once noted a 'USS Star Trek' floating around DS9 and couldn't help but think of that as being the epitome of how unimaginative some players can be.
Well, i would laugh if I see that.
I do remember a defiant class called millenium falcon flying around in pvp. Never saw so many antiproton beams/ pulses hammering such a small ship
I'm torn on the issue, as I firmly believe that that in a game like this one should be free to express themselves however they like (even if it amounts to a complete lack of self-expression) to make their ship feel more like their own; however, it also really irritates me to see names that are clearly from other franchises. I suppose I just put up with it thanks the the lesson of tolerance that Star Trek taught me :P
Oh and in the spirit of diplomacy in a time of war, my ships are all named after tough British Prime Ministers: USS Iron Duke, USS Iron Monger, and USS Iron Lady.
The best ship name's I've ever seen in game were on two ships that always flew grouped together. The lead ship was the U.S.S. Riker, and the trailing ship was the U.S.S. Riker's Beard.
If the maximum character count were increased a little then a load of the Ship names from Iain M Banks' culture series would be available. As it is I get by with "USS Misophist" for my Steamrunner...
Well, I once noted a 'USS Star Trek' floating around DS9 and couldn't help but think of that as being the epitome of how unimaginative some players can be.
In the universe of Star Trek it is probably a safe assumption that the "Star Trek" franchise never existed...
Therefore a starship name "USS Star Trek" is a perfectly valid name.
Anyway...
Offensive names I report without a second thought.
Humorous ones...if they are actually funny and not just stupid...I smile at.
Dumb ones I just roll my eyes and go about my day.
I approach any game I play as I do most things in my life, with a sense of humor. There are those who appreciate it, and those that do not. At the end of the day, it's about me enjoying myself, not about trying to please other people.
Why 'Tim' ? - some reason to me, in serious settings - short character names are funny to me. I also believe it sticks in my head because of Tim the Enchanter from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Why 'Mallard' ? - I think it had to do with me watching Duck Dynasty before playing. Scary to think that had I watched something different...
Captain Willy of the U.S.S. Gobstopper......
I thought USS Indefatigable would be a safe bet for a rare name. But turns out its not. Is that a preset name or something? In any case, the Royal Navy provides a plethora of great ship names. Bellerophon, Thunderer, Warspite, Ramillies, Centurion, Agamemnon, Implacable, Courageous etc. I believe none of these are particularly unacceptable for a federation vessel.
"This is Admiral Yuung of the Federation carrier escort group Esclarent. How may we be of assistance?"
I like using Arthurian legend for naming ships. That is also canon. But because of the fame of both legend and TV fantasy, this combination is too bloody common. So I delved deeper to find something that fit, and realized that in some interpretations, Arthur had 2 swords, the Sword in Stone, and the Excalibur. But Caliburn was noted to be a valid interpretation of the text, the Sword in Stone was somehow nameless, and a sword called Clarent fulfilled the Sword in Stone's role in the court of Arthur.
I took it together and realized that it could be that the 2 swords were in fact the Caliburn and the Esclarent, history having tossed the Ex sound to the Caliburn when both swords were combined over the times.
(Butchering Arthurian legend is a complex reference to my favorite anime, but densely vieled in Star Trek canonicity. )
"Last Engage! Magical Girl Origami-san" is in print! Now with three times more rainbows.
A true die-hard Trekker wouldn't name her ship after one from a different show.
In fact, a true die-hard Trekker would not only complain about people not finding enough original names, but also whine about people not having grammatically correct names, names that don't fit in the common scheme used by the random ship name generator (i.e. names that only matter to people who speak English and live in the western world), using NX- prefix on non-experimental ships, not having mirror universe ship prefixes for mirror ships, the presence of "alien" ships in Starfleet or the KDF, why their favorite kitbash from the novels isn't in the game, why transphasics can't pop elite tactical cubes in 1 hit, why Starfleet/KDF players would use any weapons EXCEPT Phasers/Disruptors, why the Defiant is not as small in-game as the runabout is today, battle cloaks for the Defiant and Gal-X, and all manner of canon offenses.
Then they'd loudly declare that they and everyone else is going to quit if Cryptic and "P2WE" doesn't do what they want right now.
I want to thank the OP for raising this critical and compelling issue. Please, Cryptic, won't you think of the children?
Truth. It hurts sometimes.
For the record, mine is the USS Maine. I wanted the registry 21898 (points for whoever gets the reference) but they need at least 5 digits starting with 9.
My runabout is the USS Saco (named for a river in Maine)
i name my large ships in series of USS Phalanxia "A" to "G" from various escorts and cruisers, and then oddessey.
i just now have 2 shuttles, "USS Sunrunner", Danube class, from table-top game, Silent Death module book, and just got Captain's Yatch for a joke, "USS Minnow" for gilligan's island, because it look similar shape if you take out nacelle beams.
my Atrox Carrier, a tribute to japan's anime, "Sol Blanca", so i name my carrier as "USS Sol Blanca", also it mean white star.
i dont have any "Imperial" side character made yet, naming any IKS ships is bit tricky to create, just need time.
i am not sure or remembers about "Phalanx" in one of TNG:ST episode, i think it was in one of Borg invasion, a major battle.
I like it when someone's ship name make me smile, laugh or go "hmm, where have I heard that?". An example could be the U.S.S. Daily Planet that was piloted by Clark Kent.
My own ships are thus far all named from characters in series I watch, like the U.S.S. Dunham (after Olivia Dunham in Fringe).
I (hope I) name my ships after appropriate-sounding things - my Defiant is called the Indomitable, for example. Fitting for a ship that would go out fighting. My Sovvy is called Redoubtable; she's an awesome-looking ship with a formidable armament.
When I has the dumb, I just named ships after favourite things My Jem'Hadar is called the Tarkas, after a peculiar and exotic-sounding musical jam by guitarist George Lynch (for whom my Galaxy Refit is named), because what do you name a Jem'Hadar ship if not something slightly exotic?
My sci Vesta is called the Vast Explorer, after the ship from a short lived tv show called Adventure Inc., and my Nebula is called the Starry Wisdom after a ship from the tv show Anrdomeda. They may be references to other series but theyre certainly fitting ones.
I saw a Tuffli freighter called the Eureka Maru yesterday. Win. I also saw a "U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-E" too. At least she was a Sovereign. Shook my head and moved on.
When I started to play STO, I googled a website with birds and I named all my FED ships after birds. So I have a large pool to fish in. I try to take less well known names. There is no U.S.S. Eagle, but I have a Swift, Roller, Diver, Screamer, Vanga, Shrike etc.
I have a lot of alts and got bored with the bird names. So I began to play with .... land, Sealand, Blueland, Thrueland, Homeland ( a serie, I found out lately).
My KDF ships have Klingon sounding names. They can mean anything or nothing.

I do not have a problem with that, and who are we to judge them just because they do.......
But i changed them to Grim Reaper and Oberon( and people start to steal name oberon quite often).
is not exactly original
I'm not going to call my ship the uss enterprise of course but my saber class was called the uss yeager.
My patrol escort is called the uss avenger.
My galaxy class was called the Uss Magellan and my sovereign mix noble etc was called the uss sentinel.
To be honest, people can give names to their ships whatever they want:)
