Damn. Nearly 500 posts in less than a month and not a friggin word from PWE about the issue. These guys are worse than my ISP at giving out info and providing customer support.

Just for giggles, what ISP are the people having trouble with STO using for internet access. I wonder if any connection could be made with that info. I'm using Time Warner Cable outta central Texas.

I have noticed that a lot of you have been experiencing problems opening the launcher application. You receive errors when the launcher is attempting to update. Here is a method that I have discovered that has allowed me to resolve this problem on multiple different systems.

First locate the actual game application file. On a Windows 7 system it is located here:
C:\User\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\GameClient ? this is the actual file

Open the file and it will open the STO client

DO NOT log into your account

    Then Open the Launcher

It should then process the update on the Launcher and allow you to Play

Please post a response if this works for you too.

I just tried this and all it pulls up is a window that says CrypticError: Oops!
Is there any other way of getting this to work? I am waiting on a response from Support to help. They had me do a tracert, find out my ip address and something else. From what I've read though is that nothing is going to do any good.

When they had you do the tracert, did it stop responding after going through Congetco's Boston 6 router? (leaveing the rest of the route unresponsive?) If so the only thing you can really do is refer to my earlier post about having to change IP#'s ( http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=352481&page=48 )

The whole point is we shouldn't have to be resetting ip addresses etc. this was never an issue up to a few months ago, so what did they change and mess up? And why are they so reluctant to acknowledge and fix it? I was able to stay in game after I got it up and just left it running for 5 days then got knocked out last night and can't get back in again!

i agree, we shouldn't have to...

but... ill try it if it might help :D hope is dying slowly ;)

anyway, since this issue is seems to be far from over, i've started logging 'working' and 'not working' ip's:

    77.176.80.71 *not working*
    77.176.82.107 *working*

yes, i could not connect some days ago...
    haven?t tried today though...

Having the same problem that just started yesterday afternoon. I tried running the tracert command with the same results. There server does not answer. Their other sites I cannot connect to just the same, the same ones listed many times in these threads. Going to try calling up Cable One and seeing if I can get a new IP address. If that does not work then I have no ideas either. I cannot connect to the sites on either my XP or Win 7 machines. It obviously is an Internet issue and not related to software on either machine.

I can't log into the launcher. I keep getting this error:

Unable to authenticate: Couldn't even attempt account server connection.

    Gotta love it.

Try this, it seems to work just fine for STO.
    The original post is here.

    Check this out.

    Step 1:
    Google Hotspotshield

    Step 2:
    Install the free VPN

    Step 3:
Run the VPN software and connect. Once connected you are routing traffic through the VPN. You can verify by checking your external IP by Googleing "What's my IP"

    Step 4:
Lauch the BLR launcher. It should start updating and patching.

    Step 5:
Once the patch is complete, turn off the VPN connection. Once disconnected, you should be on your normal internet. You can verify by checking your external IP by Googleing "What's my IP" - it should be different than your VPN IP address.

    Step 6:
    Press the PLAY button.

Just FYI- after you patch, you will STILL be unable to run the BLR launcher without first launching the VPN service. Just make sure you shut it off after the launcher is launched or you will be playing the game through the VPN! This will lag you really bad in game... Ohh, and for those who think I can just launch BLR from the BLR.exe after a patch, it will not work for me without first launching the launcher and pressing play...

It took me weeks to get this working. I hope I help a few people out!!!

I tried the above work around. It allowed me to download the latest patch.

I have traced the problem to one of two possible stupid things that STO is doing to all of us. They are either:

1: Using SORBS blacklisting to block all IP addresses that were ever once used by email spammers. If your IP randomly assigns you one of these addresses long after the spammer is out of business, you are blocked until you get a clean IP address. If you cannot connect to most of the different STO web servers, try this link to see if your current IP address is blacklisted: http://whatismyipaddress.com/blacklist-check

2: They set up a policy of blocking IP addresses for kids that play free games just to troll and insult other players and be a general nuisance. This solves nothing in the current world where there is an old IP shortage and most players do not have a static IP address. This just sets up a situation where someone else playing the game will get assigned the address in the future and is blocked. The trolls just wait for their IP to change and start a new account.

From the postings on this listing it appears that STO has no desire to fix this problem. So using a proxy or a VPN to mask your bad IP address is the only solution until your IP decides to change your address to one that is not being actively blocked.

What's the BLR launcher? I was able to get in yesterday but with tomorrows updates will have to close the program and go through a day of trying to connect again so I will give this a shot! I tried all Monday and got nothing I got home Tuesday the first click brought up the launcher, I just leave it running now when I get it working.

Worked fine before I went to work yesterday and came home last night and just the never ending process if trying to connect to the patch server.

Now I know it's not my PC as my Laptop has the exact same issue. So its something along the route between us and cryptic.

The error in the error log is :-

120813 22:33:45 1 [1]: Launcher PCL Error The connection was idle for too long

Tried disabling my firewall and still nothing.

All my other games work fine but really wanted get some STO time in and cant, any ideas what to do?

I had the same problem myself...if you reinstall steam at steampowered.com that should at least allow you back into the site. I'm still trying to figure out the rest for myself, hope this helps.

BLR - Blacklight Retribution is another game published by Perfect World. Apparently, at some point, they encountered the same issue with Cryptic Launcher Autoupdate and the solution was to use a VPN to mask their IPs. Its somehow ironic to find the solution for STO on a forum about BLR. While the VPN workaround works with STO too, the real solution is to check http://whatismyipaddress.com/blacklist-check to see if your IP its blacklisted. Most probably your IP is there on some damn blacklist. Ask the owner of that list to delete your IP from that list, wait 48 hours and engage. And thank fifthdread and onemorespock for their great intuitions.

What's really sad is that I have to do this at all, but it sounds like in the anals of PW games this is what they do, block IPs for some inane reason and I could say whatever and not letit bother me but after spending nearly a month and a half with support and they just couldn't tell me thats what they do unless they don't realize that software or whatever is doing this to people then it's just malfeasance on their part.

Thank you for all the posts regarding this problem. My fleet games once a week (Saturday nights) and one member couldn't log in due to this.

So we checked the blacklist link posted two messages up (and even my IP address was on 4 of those) and then had him change his IP address.

You do not have to call your internet provider to change your non-static IP address (if it's static, then I assume you must).

Instead you can log into your cable router (which connects to your cable modem) by the http address: http://192.168.1.1/

This is usually the local address for your router (unless you changed it).
You'll need to log into your router using the account name/password that either you set or is the default for your cable router's brand (go to your router's website or google it).

Then you need to find the page which states your IP address, gateway, etc... (for my Linksys/Cisco router it is located on the Status tab). Release your IP address, then obtain a new one (renew). This usually resets your address to a different one.

This worked for my teammate's problem which was giving the same error as noted in this thread. Thanks again for all the posts, which helped us get him back online!
    Good luck.

I don't have a router. It's just a coax cable comes out of the wall to my cable modem, and then another cable to the back of my computer.

(I'm actually somewhat more knowledgeable than the above makes me sound, I'm just keeping it simple)

    I just tried a tracert to patchserver.crypticstudios.com

it made it 14 hops to -
    cryptic-3.border11.bsn.pnap.net [216.52.61.78]

and after that it was all timeouts

I didn't see any of that cogent or whatever, it was all cox.net (my ISP) and then a bunch of savvis.net, and then pnap.net started at 13, and 14 I listed in full above.

But the point is, the tracert is actually reaching a cryptic server, and then it pukes. How's that for incriminating?

Oh, my! Well, thanks for keeping the topic alive :)

Somewhere back in the 52 pages of this thread, there is a suggestion about using VPN. I'm going to dig back and try to find it again.

OK, I was actually able to patch, login, and play the game last night, literally for the first time in months. I did this using the VPN workaround described in the following post -

    http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?p=5761811&highlight=free#post5761811

However, let me add a few words of advice and clarification, since this workaround was originally developed for Blacklight Retribution, a different PW game.

    1) Wherever the post talks about the "BLR launcher", substitute the phrase "STO launcher"

    2) For me, the patching process was excruciatingly slow, taking a bit over 3 hours in all. In all fairness, however, I'd been away for months, and missed a couple of quite major updates. This was about 13G of patches to be processed.

    3) Leave the VPN activated until you reach the character selection screen. At that point, you can finally turn off the VPN utility, and log in with the character of your choice. Do not actually log in your character with VPN activated or you will have terrible lag. No, I mean even worse than usual :D

    4) Once you're in the game, you can change characters without needing to re-activate VPN, even though that process involves re-entering your password. Don't ask me why, I have no (expletive deleted) clue.

    5) The whole thing isn't nearly as intimidating as it sounds. You just Google "hotspot shield", download the FREE version of their utility, install it, and fire up STO. No file manipulation is involved, and no advanced computer knowledge is needed. I did not avail myself of the 7-day free trial of their elite version, I just downloaded the free version and used that. Free trial versions of things tend to mess up your system when they expire, in my experience.

    6) Be aware that the free version is ad-driven. Even if you de-select their wretched toolbar option during the install, it will still inflict some ads on you. Basically, every time you start up their free VPN utility, it will open your browser (if it's not already), and show you an ad for their company, trying to persuade you to upgrade to the paid "elite" version. You can close their ad immediately with no harm done, and the good news is that once VPN is turned off, the ads stop appearing.

I feel your pain, brother. Cryptic's lack of concern is truly epic.

My only suggestion would be, are you running the game in Steam? If so, try running the STO executable directly. You'll have to use Win-R and browse to your game directory. Mine looks like this, but your location may vary.

    "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\star trek online\Star Trek Online.exe"

That "%1 " in the error message you're getting is a variable that was supposed to be passed and wasn't, but I don't know what that means, sorry to say.

    Hey guys,

I'm having this same issue on Champions.

It tries to connect twice then tells me it can't connect to the patchserver.

I've run the tracert and seems like it's getting stuck at the cogent place.

So I called Cogent and the rep ran some tests and called me back. He said it's something from Cryptic's IP that is blocking me.

Here's the thread over on the Champions forum:

    http://co-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=185471

I've reported the IP issue on my Support Ticket and included screenshots of the Tracers, just waiting for a response.
