Sorry to resurrect this thread but... "for the record"... in season 7's episode "Shattered", when Chakotay is talking to a Janeway from the past about going there, Janeway specifically states "Voyager doesn't have an astrometrics lab."
So I'll happily stand by my belief that the Intrepid class was designed for speed and maneuverability which are both assets to close range combat. Given the class's limited photon supply, it was likely either intended for heavy phaser use or short duration missions.
In theory it could have been designed to fill the gap between the Defiant class and larger, more conventional cruiser designs.
It was also carrying two tricobalt devices onboard, which was said not to be a normal part of a starships arsenal. As mentioned in the season 6 episode "The Voyager Conspiracy", where we got the following dialogue:
Seven : "The Captain ordered Commander Tuvok to destroy the array. He fired two tricobalt devices. Are those weapons normally carried on Federation Starships?"
Chakotay : "No."
Seven : "Yet they were part of Voyager's arsenal. Why?"
There is no reason a tac or eng player cannot use a science vessel; you are just being stubborn...
I use science vessels on my tactical alt, and I have tons of fun with her.
This is true, from Captain to RA I often used the Intrepid. Being a Tac in a Sci vessel can be extremely fun and very powerful with the right BO skills.
Right now I use the refit Galaxy just because I am a sucker for a separating saucer section
I wonder how much of the argument over "I want ship TRIBBLE to be an TRIBBLE class" would be resolved if the whole concept of "tactical, science, engineer" was based on a ship kit rather than the ship filling a pre-determined role.
What I mean by that is that bridge officer slots, equipment slots, and class-centric bonuses and abilities like target subsystems would be linked to a mountable ship kit rather than the ship itself.
The ship itself would then only determine weapon mounts, hull/shield strengths, and turn rate.
So for example, a Defiant would have low hull/shields but a high turn rate and could mount cannons. It is therefore still an "escort" by definition, but by installing an Engineering Kit and thereby giving it a bonus to hull/shield strength as well as a focus on engineering equipment and boffs, you effectively turn it into a destroyer - a very lightly armed small cruiser.
Likewise, installing the same Engineering Kit into the Intrepid, with its innate mid-range hull/shields would turn it into a light cruiser.
And finally, installing the same kit into a Galaxy class turns the Galaxy into a full Cruiser.
Using other examples, a tactical kit in an Intrepid could turn the Intrepid into a heavy destroyer, installing a science kit into a Galaxy could turn the Galaxy into a long-range science vessel, etc etc.
The only vessels where perhaps this wouldn't work are those geared entirely to certain functions which, so far, are limited only to the KDF Birds of Prey and Carriers.
So doing it this way means that the ship benefits the most by using its intended kit, but would have given the player a greater ability to customise the ship further to match their play style.
Though that would obviously be quite a headache for balance issues.
ok, so flying around esd today i noticed that the nebula was rebadged a sci vessel, now my hope is that they are just rying to throw people off cause it is a cruiser. i as a tac officer was actually looking forward to playing my favorite ship, and now that is possibly an impossability... i will not buy it if it is a sci vessel, and i will whine and cry like the sci's for equal right as far as an escort goes... thus the escorts would be the only peeps getting no love...
plz cryptic leave the nebula as a cruiser so we can "all" enjoy it. there is no reason a sci player cannot use a cruiser, they are just being stubborn...
the other problem this brings up with me is the lack of canonality with this move. the nebula was an explorer cruiser, it has the same armaments as a galaxy, and is just a bit smaller. three for and three aft weapons hardly would do it justice, and the fact that only sci peeps would benefit from it (being a multi role ship in canon) further makes me lose the star trek feel. i have been drooling for this ship since the game released and now i feel like because a couple of people complained, (though a far vaster majority wanted it to stay cruiser) u guys caved in. i have baught every cruiser you released, but i have baught no sci vessels, and i will continue to not purchase sci vessels (as i know most tacs and engineers feel the same way..). a vessel loses to much when it is a sci vessel for it to be apealing to tac and engineer.... if your gonna give the sci's something, develop a new ship that no one cares about... but be fair and make the cannon ships (unless otherwise slated like a defient being an escort, or the olympic being a sci for example) cruisers.
again i am disapointed that the devs decided to make it a cruiser, and then caved.... really lame for the rest of us... the disapointment makes me lose interest in the game....
In fact the ship in game act as a cruiser with a sci flavor(really good to play solo no matter your type of captain)i guess they put as i sci ship because we already have a lot of cruisers to all tiers, about the weapons is cleary a away to let the ship in pair with the actual rank, the refit version is more closest to the real thing as the refit excelsior is more close to the canon than the adv heavy cruiser we have access earlier in game(great ship and the trasnwarp is a must).
I dunno. The sci vessels seem to have quite the edge over cruisers in many ways.
Before state that you think about what you want from your ship.
You want play pvp only?pve?support a team? tank one enemy?tank multiple enemies ? dps?provide sustained fire ?
People start to complain abut every single ship in game trying to compare a Galaxy cruiser to a Sov,an Intrepid to a Luna etc etc.
Im dont want be blunt and use your post as an example(not personal and i dont want to offend you in any manner) but lets do some effort to build some real feedback to improve the game, because the devs more or less use our toughts about everthing to set the game.
Keep that in mind.

The forum rules say a thread must not be posted in if it is over 30 days old. Re-opening very old threads is a reportable offense that will get you a warning and an infraction against you for spamming. Five infractions and you get banned for 3 days. More infractions will get you banned for longer. Just an FYI.
When I saw this I thought, where has the OP been, it 's always been a Sci ship.
Way to necro a thread. Of course this is the first forum I've been on that would rather you post a new thread than use the search feature for a thread of the same topic.
Apparently this one is immune to head-shots...
I'm thinkin' "The Thing" Alien-Zombie and I'm prepping my Flame Thrower...;)
Or perhaps a Change in Forum Policy's (as it seems that most of the Thread Moderations so far today, have been of a moving nature rather than of the closing nature)...to go along with the new Owners...???
The thing with this thread shows that there was a time when the devs listened to the players when it game to feeling ill will towards a ship being introduced to the game. Soooooooo...read well devs...you changed the Nebula....perhaps it is time to rethink the Rhode Island.
Actually the argument about the Nebula was very clear, it was originally going to be a cruiser but the science players (myself included) argued due to the module based system of the nebula it could easily be modified to be more of a science role, sooo I believe in this situation they did listen as we pleaded for a new science ship and they provided one in the Nebula

They've pushed back the RI release twice now, so maybe they are thinking it over.

On before the zombie bash starts
Set Phaser's to KILL!!!!!
FAST! Its not to late to amputate your head!
Nurse robin, to the dismemberment mobile!
da da da da da da da da .....
The Nebula was always a cruiser too. That didn't seem to matter much in this game. The Akira was supposed to be a carrier.
So I don't see why they can't make the Odyssey an escort for game balance purposes.
