Talking with the systems designer who is working on the Galaxy - there is a goal to bring iconic ships to the end game - not just as geo variants - but with unique functionality. The Galaxy X is the first such ship he's working on but it is setting the tone for how the others will/may work. The trade-off may be that these ships will be restricted from customization. Take for example the Galaxy. One of the reason's we haven't implemented a Galaxy saucer separation yet is because the fx to do so will not work with all the different parts that players can customize on their ship. However if we restrict the geo customization - we could do cool features like that and make some of these end tier ship super unique. btw.. we are currently *not* working on a Galaxy saucer separation power - but we'd sure like to.
That's all well and good, but restricting the Galaxy X to a handful of people who manage to achieve your costly requirement of 5 subbers is just plain mean-spirited.
You cannot expect us to be excited about that or any other related content if you're going to pull this.
I mean, what will a saucer sep feature cost us? Ten subscribers?

I have a quick question, since this is a major debate in this thread. Can you be a little more specific regarding the cannon? Will it shoot rainbows and puppies or will it destroy the space/time continuum? At least try to put the "purely cosmetic" vs. "gamebreaking and unbalanced" debate to rest. Also, since you mentioned the Defiant and Intrepid variants, are they going to be stuck in the stupid RAF or are they going to be given out a different way? Restricting it to those who still have 5 friends that weren't recruited or having people do an aggressive viral marketing campaign for you is bad form.

So you're putting the testbed for these designs behind a wall of exclusivity?
*sigh*
Is that the story with the Steam droppable turret and the D2D damage-to-EPS device?

First, THANKS for letting us know that we're getting tier 5 versions of the ships we've been fans of for years! Much appreciated!
Second, some differentiation in endgame ships is a good thing, and unique abilities among ships is very cool. Why some people assume dire unbalancing effects by the game designers while not in possession of the whole of the story is a puzzlement, and thanks for filling in those blanks for us. It may have ruined a surprise, but, whatever.
Lastly, I must say that I hope that there will be an alternate way to get the Galaxy X. If I were interested in that particular ship I'd be really bummed, since I've already introduced everyone I know who might be interested in STO to the game already. Imagine my inner child with his little face pressed against the toy store window on Christmas Eve. I know you people at Cryptic love kids and puppies, so I'm sure you won't let all these screaming inner-rug-rats down.
I've got to go now. There's... something in my eye. *Sniff*
I mean, what will a saucer sep feature cost us? Ten subscribers?
The Galaxy X was a specific ship created specifically for the Referral program. The goal with the other end game ships is that they would be unlockable by reaching the next tier level but the specifics of that are still be discussed.
Can you be a little more specific regarding the cannon?
Here's what I know about it so far - The cannon is specific to this ship, and takes the place of a weapon's slot, but is not an item that can be removed and placed on another ship. It shows up as a captain's power on your weapon tray. The beam is intendend to be a very narrow front cylinder beam that can pass through objects and hit multiple targets if you are lined up properly (out to a set distance).
There are no details yet on recharge timers or how it impacts cooldowns of other powers/weapons.
I've also heard rumor that it may have a non-battle cloak - which means that it might be able to cloak - but only out of combat.
Once the designer is finished with the ship - I'll see if I can get the full details.
The ship will be available by the time that your referals hit their first 30 day billing cycle.

Given how many people desire this ship, you cannot in good consience say this is a good idea.
I'm sure it appears good financially, but in terms of goodwill to us, the players, you're shooting yourselves in the foot.
And as been pointed out, you're putting out your proof of concept ship under a veil of ultra-exclusivity.
Adding functionality to ships dosent count for anything if only an extreme minority is going to be the ones to attain them via this INSANE criteria.
I will be directly telling everyone peopl to STAY AWAY from STO if this continues because I sure as hell will not recommend a game when Cryptic is pulling these kinds of stunts AND fleecing their EXISTING customers while doing it.
THEY cant market this game without resorting to a pyrimid scheme which is yet another addition to a long list of Cryptic PR blunders. Rather than try and make this game reasonable enough so it can stand on its own merits they have to enlist the aid of their customers by turning them into Viral marketers for the carrot so ungraciously dangled out of reach.
Cryptic's new policy: You want the cool stuff you have to work and make us money.
What, you actually thought we were going to make a decent game over a barren shell that we can shovel fluff out the door to the poor suckers willing to pay for it ?
dstahl doesn't appear to be listening to our objections, perhaps because policy doesn't allow him to answer the absurdity of this referral system (some policy eh?)
I suppose all we can do is continue to object and hope someone gets it.
The Galaxy X was a specific ship created specifically for the Referral program.
And Memory Alpha was originally created the way it was, and the game was originally created with out a DP or end game content, and Klingons were launched without PvE. Yet, in response to player feedbac, you guys have made the changes the community wanted. So the question is, will you listen again?
I'm glad they are dstahl! I would love to get the galaxy X, but I can't, because as a classical musician I don't really have any friends that play MMO's or even video games for that matter! I'd be more than happy to shell out 2,000 CP for this ship!
I am not at all whining, and I hope this becomes a viable option along with the other items awarded for the referral program! I'd be more than happy to buy all of them from the C-store!

Um...so, let me get this straight. The cannon replaces a weapon slot. OK. Whatever. Not as bad as I feared based on that info, although the ability to fire through objects is a bit OP IMHO. Now you're saying that it might have a cloak, albeit out of combat? That's a kick in the crotch. And saying that this is all exclusive to people who shell out big bucks or prostitute themselves for a ship that will be seen by a handful of people who will lord it over the rest of us? Can I drop my pants now or do I need to wait until the referral program goes live?

This ship SHOULD be one of the next tier unlockables, it's the only way anyone will EVER get it.

This sounds interesting but is very pie in the sky unless the "weapon arc" overlay will draw a line over distance to show where the beam is headed.

There we are, the absolute proof that this is nothing but a money grabbing attempt. Not only do we have to somehow find 5 people who want to play this game (and don't already), but we need to make sure that the 5 of them subscribe for at least 1 month after their free thirty days. Good Job cryptic, you're building a brand new ship and maybe 1 person on the planet will be able to unlock it.
Just because they're aware of it doesn't mean they'll do anything, let's face it, when it comes to STO, they don't exactly have a track record of intelligent ideas for implementing additional content. And it does beg the question, "Which management?" Atari or Cryptic.
----
Rant over, but it's TRIBBLE like this that really is driving fans away from playing, if you keep this stuff up, by the end of the first year the only people playing this game will be gold farmers, Koreans and the die hard geeks who live in basements wearing a greased up TOS tunic. You'll have driven everyone else away by providing microtransactions for half the game content and gamebreaking content at that.
As it stands, I'm not going to be paying for anymore subscription time once my 60 day timecard expires, and as for the "5 friends" I managed to refer to this game during the launch, they never bothered renewing their subscriptions after the 30 free days and went back to WoW.
Then they better be aware we will not stand for this kind of marginalization.
Indeed.. I must say I am rather.. shocked at this blatant money-grab-ish behavior. So something that a lot of us have been clamoring for this specific ship will only be available to those who somehow manage to get five people not only to buy the game and try it, but to -also- subscribe to the game for a month beyond that.
Now on top of this while it is 'planned' to allow 'classic' ship variants in T5. This will be the -only- one available 'for awhile' as a previous dev post in this same thread stated.
This is.. becoming unacceptable. I'm miffed about not being able to get this ship, one of my all time favorites but to then tell me that the plans to make other 'classic' ships available in T5 are quite a ways down the road -beyond- this ship being introduced? Well.. would you like to kick me again for having the gall to purchase a lengthy subscription and try to talk the only three people I know that would be remotely interested in trying an MMO -before- this program was introduced. Two of them I even went so far as to buy copies of the game for to try.. Though none of the three retained subscriptions after the initial month.
I'm a bit beyond miffed at this, as are many others. Though I sincerely doubt our objections will derail the blatant money-grab.
Keep in mind "management is aware" could just mean "they're pointing and laughing at us".
Possibly, although I like to be an optimist and hope that dstahl and the rest of the devs are petitioning for us! After all, they've put a lot of hard work into this, even more than we spend playing it, so I think they deserve our support, but that's just my opinion.
Good Job cryptic, you're building a brand new ship and maybe 1 person on the planet will be able to unlock it.
And that one person will be the most universally hated and despised person in the game.
Human nature. Hell if I see a Galaxy X in pvp under this referall system, I'll let the Klingons gank it. That's a promise.
Makes one almost wonder if Cryptic is trying to intentionally sabotage STO with these insane schemes.
Didn't they learn anything from the 90 day incident?

Cryptic is being brought down by marketers that either don't have a clue about keeping customers happy, or have utter disdain for us.
Unlikely, they wont start laughing until they see the poor fools that actually start shelling like crazy for this thing.
From the sounds of it this cannon is going to be the ship equivelent of a high density rifle. Not as good as a split beam but if they are sacrificing a weapon slot for this thing the only valid conclusion is this weapon will make up for that missinG weapon.
In other words, lose a slot, gain a super gun that can zap anyone in a straight line AND potentially have the ability to cloak. Next we will find out it has universal stations to allow ALL professions to fly it and other 'unique' features.
I cant wait to see what happens when cloaking Galaxy-Xs appear and the rest of the Federation base quite rightly points out if one ship can get a cloak ... why not other ships. The Defiant being a prime example of whats going to be highly demanded especially from the new tier version.
"All STO gamers are equal but some are more equal than others"
I imagine that a t5 Defiant with a cloak will be next on their list of shill exclusives.
Yours if you get 15 friends to spend more than 2000cp each at the c-store!

I can honestly say finding one million dollars would be an easier task than finding 10 people I know who'd be interested in STO.
