I'm having the same problem mentioned before, I used xpadder as i wanted to avoid typing commands, had everything mapped perfectly, then went to test it and found out the game had default bindings that would conflict with my setup. I had a binding for fire torps but the games defualt is to switch targets, so both happens and I fail.
So what's the easiest way to clear out the defaut settings? Is there possibly a single command to remove them or do I have to bind all commands to "" or null? Sorry if it's a dumb question at this point ITT but this command line stuff isn't easy for me to grasp.
BTW xmapper has some nice features and is worth using even with full ingame joystick support. The program can bind multiple keys to the controller so you can do setups like fire beams + reroute to front shields + focus fire all in one push of the button, in addition to turbo so you don't have to button mash.
I wish I could remember what I typed into CO to make the 360 controller joysticks rotate my character and camera much faster. If anyone comes across it, please post it.

Ill answer my own question here, I took the save file, thanks raymond, and deleted all the inputs to " ". Saved it and loaded and everything works fine.
I had to disable interface volume so that my turbo didn't constantly spam the "ERNT" not available sound but besides that everything works fine, no stutters even. If used properly you can gain a huge advantage with the controller, being able to do 4 or more functions in one button press. It takes some getting used to but this owns. Thanks to everyone paving the way for the inept at command lines.
To set Bind #1 and #2, you need to edit your bind file directly.
I haven't found a way to automatically bind straight to Bind #2, but if you put 2 options for the same command into a bind file, then load it, you can use both keys.
So, for example, if you add the lines
1 "TrayExecByTray 0 0"
Button4 "TrayExecByTray 0 0"
Then key 1 and mouse button 4 will both fire button 1.
The bind file is plain text, so all you need to do is copy the command you want, paste it at the end and change the button.
And my thanks to all the posters in this thread, there have been some great suggestions and help, that hopefully Cryptic will pick up on.
I have Repetitive Stress Injury, in which my wrists swell and I get sever pain after doing repetitive motions with my hand,s specifically, repetitive keyboard and mouse actions.
No matter how I remap the keys, I am in pain after an hour of space combat using the kbd-mouse interface of this game as it stands.
I have a good Thrustmaster USB T.Flightstick X (It works on the PC and the PS3) but for the life of me I cannot make it work well with this game.
I am getting pain mainly after/during space combat. That's the only time I seem to need the Vulcan Finger Contortion Death Grip on my keyboard and mouse (and my poor space bar is getting beaten to death).
I do not own an XBox 360.
So...
Is it worth it to go out and buy a 360 controller for this? Basically, can I do most of my space combat functions using binds, remaps and the 360 controller?
The main thing I want is to be able to take care of flying the ship and firing the weapons on the controller.
The "nice to haves" would be able to assign camera look (like my joystick's POV hat), and individual weapons groups per trigger (beams, torps), as well as get tab targeting on a trigger, +/- the throttle, and the ability to reinforce at least Fwd and Aft shields, as well as buttons to for 2 or 3 of mine/my BO's abilities.
Important: Is there anything important missing from a 360-based controller system other than typing in chat or some less commonly used things in space?

for once i can help someone out pal i have similar problems using keyboards for short times my hands go numb i find the 360 controller to be light well motioned and thought out for the hand and its light weight all in all it makes game play more fun i sitll have problems but where as i can spend 5-6 hours playing using my xbox pad i can only spend 1-2 hours playing with a keyboard im not sure which country you are from but in the uk you can get the reciever and the pad from 30-40£££.
best of luck
and thanks for the commands they are great making my sto experiance a lot easyer
The keybindings are great, I love using my 360 controller.
I have noticed 1 issue, and I'm not sure if it is with the bindings or the game, or my controller (or both).
When I get near an object to interact, or pick it up .. sometimes it will work just fine as exected, get near an object press A .. to interact, etc..
But sometimes, it's like the whole controler wigs out, pressing A doesn't do any good, and movement gets weird I can move in some directions, but not all directions (and the directions I can move in are different, so it's not consistant).
If I click on the button, or press F to interact .. everything goes back to working.
I'm just wondering if there is a setting somewhere I can change to fix this.

PS. forgot to add, this happens both in space and on the ground.

Actually you could probably bind the Thrustmaster the same way people are doing custom binds for the Xbox 360. Xbox 360 Gamepad is a joystick as far as Windows is concerned but will take some technical knowledge about how the Thrustmaster communicates input (like is POV controls buttons or axis etc.) or some trial and error. XBox 360 gamepad has 2 joysticks(2 axis each) and 1 throttle (the Trigger buttons are the Throttle) and everything else is a button. Axis input is handled like virtual buttons in the UI so a range on the axis = pressing a button as far as this game is concerned. If you can you'll probably want the Joystick to emulate mouse movement too, Game Profiler can do this, others generally can too just check to make sure.
Haven't tried using the Xbox 360 since Beta and there was a stutter in Ground movement animations with it, so I haven't messed with it since.
Might also try: Joy2Key (limited capabilities but Free) Xpadder (Hear is really good and popular - Not Free) Pinnacle Game Profiler (I have it, its very powerful / learning curve for advanced setups though - more expensive than Xpadder)
Also, I haven't tried setting up a profile (I did with Champions Online so it wouldn't be that difficult but I'm still burnt out from spending a month working with it for CO to do again with STO - I'm just not interested in doing that much work to TRIBBLE with problems I have with the UI - more likely to take a Long break from the game - I'm a lifer).
I'd stick with the Thrustmaster and use keyboard for powers and Interfaces (journal, social etc.).

yeah, this is an issue for me also. every once in a while it refuses to interact, but when you hit the keyboard to do it all goes back to normal on the controller. must be a bug of some kind.
I need an opinion/consensus: Is it worth it to go out and buy a 360 controller for this? Basically, can I do most of my space combat functions using binds, remaps and the 360 controller?
ABSOLUTELY.
No two ways about this, it's worth it. check my post on the third page of this thread. there are pics of how I've mapped my bindings on the controller. Not only will you be able to fly and fire, but you will have complete control over:
targeting (next, previous, nearest and nearest friendly)
throttle (full impulse, increase and decrease by .25 and all stop)
power presets (attack, defend, speed and equal)
reinforce shields (all 4 directions)
camera control
scanning
map
ALL BO powers (I currently have HY torps, emergency shields, extend shields and jam sensors color coordinated to the officers! (nerd alert!) as well as emergency power to weapons, evasive maneuvers and rotate shield frequency!)
you can get a 360 controller and the wireless pc receiver for $65 at large electronics retailers, and it takes about 2 minutes to install the software. once you are in the game, load the /bind files I posted on pg2 as instructed and you'll be all set!
Has anyone else noticed that your speed reduces quite significantly while using the wired 360pad sticks to manoeuvre your ship by holding the stick at set points? is it just me is there a setting for this?
Cryptic should have built in support to map joystick key presses when you're setting up the key binds via the UI. Bt thanks to the OP for posting instructions.

Oddly, I am getting this on the wireless controller as well-- but only in some systems! I can travel to a planet and steer without any issue, and the next system I'll turn and notice a marked decrease in speed as I maneuver. it seems kind of random.

I think i know whats going on, I like the ship to fly like a plane (flight sim) so pushing down on L stick makes ship go up, pushing up on L stick makes ship go down, but if i push the L stick just a tiny bit up the ship goes UP?? and vice versa if i push down on L stick a tiny bit makes ship goes DOWN? im guessing the game defaults as up is up and down is down and is somehow overriding my binds?
The camera speed keybind I posted in this thread helps with that. When I switch from ground to space or back I have to hit the bind to speed back up the camera/character turn. Same as in CO.
I seem to be having trouble getting set up with the 360 controller. I've never done this kind of stuff before, but I'm sure I followed Ray's directions correctly. In space I can rotate the cam, both sticks work fine, but I can't seem to be able to use the d-pad at all. I don't know what's wrong. And for ground controls, my feet don't leave the ground,... like I'm sliding forward very slowly. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have tried the 2 posted txt files in order to use the xbox gamepad. However I find that the buttons only work intermittently. I cannot use the triggers to fire weapons and only the target nearest setting ie both bumpers works. I have tried amending the txt file with no luck. Any ideas?
Not sure why this would happen (most bindings not working) I can understand the bridge officer powers not working because it would depend on where you placed them in the trays (I have the buttons bound to certain tray slots and did not use the specific BO power binds)
but the whole not firing weapons thing has me baffled. That should be a definite across all as it's its own /bind command. (not a tray power)
I will post my REV4 /bind files tonite and see if that helps. Anyone else have any ideas?
okay, so here's the thing: when i try to bind via the options menu in the game, i find that i'm unable to bind to most buttons on my controller. IE: I assigned .throttleadjust .25 to my lstick up just to see if it was working, and it was fine... however, when i try the same for joypad_up it doesnt even register. Same goes for most of my buttons. I checked functionality of the controller through windows and all buttons are in proper working order when I test them. Any ideas?

You WILL NOT be able to bind in the keybindings menu in the current version of the game.
As it stands, support for the controller is unofficial, and functionality is limited. Some inputs, like the sticks, will register in the /bind menu, but most will not. assignments to the buttons must be made manually in the chat window as described in Ko's original post.
OR, you can load the /bind files I have made as shown on pg3 of this post.

Hrm, missed it. Thanks.
/cam_pitch_speed #
/cam_yaw_speed #
5 is considered fast, 1 or 2 is what CO defaulted to.
/bind (whatever key you want) "cam_pitch_speed x$$cam_yaw_speed x"
http://forums.champions-online.com/showpost.php?p=997906&postcount=15
/bind ` "cam_pitch_speed 7$$cam_yaw_speed 7" makes it move nice and fast when I hit the ~/` key
