My current ship is just the U.S.S. Travis cause there isn't enough room for "William B. Travis". I'm very much proud of my Texas heritage, and being from San Antonio I have a lot of Texas history basically in my backyard. So a lot of my ships are named for famous figures and/or locations in Texas history.

I also have a couple named for U.S. generals, moons and other science-y stuff for the science vessels, and 3 escorts named after 3 of the 5 stealth aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force (Lancer, Nighthawk, and Raptor).

My Engineering Officer has all his ships named after Feudal Japanese clans. My Science Officer has her ships named after Greek mythological figures. Both their shuttles, runabouts, and Delta Flyer are named after various cities in Germany.

My science officer's ships were all named after various properties, states, or transitions of water.

    U.S.S. Sublimation
    U.S.S. Conduction
    U.S.S. Steamboat
    U.S.S. Convection
and a few others I forget at the moment..

Delta flyer I named U.S.S. Waveguide to keep the sciency theme.

My new star cruiser I named U.S.S. Promethean just because the look is sleek (Celestial style) so I wanted a sleek sounding name.

My main, current ship is the Fleet Escort U.S.S. Penetrator, NX-99999-X

th name speaks for itself; it penetrated defenses, goes deep into damaging your armor, and explodes many torpedoes on you.

It's also the name of a Pulp-Action book series from the early 80's.

USS Robert E. Lee - self explanatory in conjuction with my forum avatar
    USS Confederation - same
USS Menahem Begin - named after one of the greatest politicians of Israel
USS David Ben Gurion - same
USS Vulture - for my Defiant refit, I needed something aggressive, ideally some bird of prey. I was thinking of Kestrel, Marauder and Eagle, but Vulture did strike me as best.

I'll only name the significant named ships for mine.

    VA Althenia D'aran (Eng, Andorian):
USS Weyhtan (Cruiser, named after the Andorian colony)
USS Aurek Besh (Assault Cruiser, it's the written form of Basic in Star Wars)
USS Chesapeake Bay (Excelsior Retrofit, obvious)

    VA Ishaka Menno (Tac, Alien/near-human):
USS Altair (Defiant Retrofit, Name of world in ST, and since in the fanfic concept she's from, the Altair was a Defiant)
USS Boyington (Gal-X, From same fanfic concept, same class as in fic. Named after Greg "Pappy" Boyington of the 214th Marine Fighter Division, the 'Black Sheep Squadron'.)
USS Black Sheep (Prometheus, another nod to Boyington and the squadron)

    VA K'dara (Tac, Klingon)
USS Tornado (Fleet Escort. I'm something of a weather nerd sometimes, being from the north end of tornado alley)

    VA M'iaria (Sci, Caitian)
USS Kitsune (Nova, Japanese for Fox, often considered intelligent in stories)
USS Far Star (Recon Sci. Named for the ORIGINAL reference in Star Wars EU, well before it was a SWG server, it was the captured Corellian Corvette used as an exploration/assault ship in the Darkstryder campaign for the original West End Games d6 Star Wars RPG.)

Some others have been renamed, or haven't been significant enough to be named, those are all the 'important' ones I could think of.

Althenia's Delta Flyer is named the USS Rollerskate only as a joke. ;)

Rereading this thread made me stop at Identiaetlos' post, mentioning Gambier Bay. Makes me want to do a couple ships on a new alt sometime based on Taffy 3 and the Battle of Samar as well. The Johnston and the Samuel B. Roberts and their commanders especially deserve a nod, for bold actions taken by a little group of destroyers, destroyer escorts, and tiny escort carriers, to stop the Japanese main fleet (Including the Yamato, the largest battleship ever fielded, and which had as much gross tonnage by itself as ALL of the ships in Taffy 3 combined...) and save 200,000 US Marines. :)

All of my Ships have something to do with the base class of my toons. My actual main toon is a science officer. She flies most of the time science vessels. Her actual ship's name is USS Pulsar. Agressive names won't work for sci vessels, and I do not like famous people names, because a lot of other players alreaady uses them.

My former main was a tac. She commanded a exporation cruiser, with the name USS Unforgiven II (No, it has nothing to do with the Metallica song. There was befor that ship an USS Unforgiven. This one is just the successor.) The name came from the immersion of the toon.

U.S.S. Pegasus (NCC-93485-E): Star Cruiser named for the flying war horse of Perseus from Greek mythology he used to defeat the Kraken, etc. The sixth ship of the name consecutively numbered as I leveled and replaced each previous cruiser with it's successor. And, yes, I am aware that there was a Pegasus from TNG cannon, but that one never actually existed since it was an illegal test of cloaking technology for Starfleet; mine was created as a cover-up.

U.S.S. Perseus (NCC-93486): Retrofit Exploration Cruiser; just seemed fitting.

U.S.S. Prometheus (NCC-93487): Assault Cruiser; again, just fell in line with the Greek heroes theme.

my fed sci in an escort is "B - Deviant" because it sounds funny.

My main, my KDF Eng ships name is "Human Overlord" because
    1) many feds pvp poorly and i am sure by season 6 it will be about how to incorporate dailies that have to do with human herding and human zoo's on earth
    2) in pvp matches, i am sure the feds like the irony

my tac kdf in a kar'fi carrier named "Useless" because, well, it is.

On my first character, I went with Space Shuttles:
    Columbia
    Endeavour
    Challenger
    Discovery
    Atlantis

My second time through, I went with Dumas:
    Aramis
    d'Artagnan
    Edmond Dantes
    Athos
    Porthos

The split's in there because I couldn't see Porthos as an appropriate name for an escort. It sounded more appropriate for my Excelsior.

I tend to do themes by character as well. To date:

Movie characters (Pris, Perfect Tommy, and so on)
Sherlock Holmes (Baskerville, Baker Street, and so on)
    Scientists (Bohr, Fibonacci, etc)
WW2 aircraft carriers (Oriskany and Valley Forge so far).
