I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised to find so many good ship names in STO. I was expecting to find things like "USS lolnoobkiller" and seventy different misspellings of "Enterprise."
U.S.S. Coral Sea, NCC-93703, an Excalibur-class Cruiser. The US Navy names their Ticonderoga-class cruisers after historically-significant American battles, so I went that route. Not as creative as some others here, though. I might have to think harder.
Why did you pick it any real reason or was it just random post it here.
Mine was the USS Sentinel. Named after My old Lug Trek Ambassador Class Ship. captained that thing for 18 years before it got blown up by the Hur'Q. total roleplay nerd here.
Other ship is the USS Tantalus. Another Nod to a Star trek rpg i play. it was a Galaxy class.
All my ship and character names come from Ancient Aliens as indicated by the tablets of ancient Sumer because what could be more appropriate for aliens then names from real extra terrestrials?
I have a ship which bears the name of a famous literary steam powered sex toy. Some people think the name refers to a famous rock group. The truth is that the rock group and I got the name from the same source; Edgar Burrough's 'Naked Lunch.'
USS Crazy Horse (Excelsior Class) - A nod to the original as seen in TNG.
USS RickRoll (Defiant Class) - No explanation really needed, but it packs a punch lol
USS Odyssey (Galaxy Class) - Another nod to the original destroyed in DS9 by the Dominion.
USS Picard (Constitution Class) - Ohmage to TNG
USS BohemianRhapsody (Intrepid Class) - Ohmage to one of the best bands out there, Queen!
USS Forlorn Hope - Heavy Cruiser - A Nepoleonic term for the first wave in an attack on a well defended position. Basically a suicide mission.
USS Warspite - Assault cruiser - Named after a British battleship that served in WW1 & WW2
USS Inquisitor - Cruiser retrofit - Mainly from the Warhammer 40k universe, but everyone is terrified of the inquisition.
USS Georgia - I've named my septum piercing georgia and it was the first name to come to mind that sounded shiplike
USS Shrike - I got my wildlife book from the kitchen and opened it on a random page. All the birds on the page I opened were different shrikes. The character this ship belongs to is called Henriette Aecellus - Henriette because that's the name of one of my ear rim piercings (only two of my seven piercings have names though), Aecellus because when I opened the wildlife book to find her surname it opened on the common woodlouse - Oniscus acellus. I liked the sound of acellus but changed it so it looked nicer. So I made it look nicer and so it sounded more like Aeschylus but not as harsh (because I'm an ancient history freak).
U.S.S. Thomas Jefferson (Galaxy Dreadnaught) - Named, obviously, for the renown political leader, writer, renaissance man, and third President of the United States
U.S.S. Damascus (Sovereign), for the capital city of Syria, which around the time of the Crusades was legendary for producing the highest quality steel in the world
U.S.S. Phalanx (Galaxy Refit), for a defensive military formation used by the Greeks
U.S.S. Resnik (Delta Flyer), for Judith Resnik, an astronaut who died in the Challenger explosion.
U.S.S. Missouri (Danube Runabout), named for the river in the midwestern United States.
U.S.S. Sagan (Nebula), for Carl Sagan, the educator, astronomer and poet who authored the Cosmos book and TV series, among many other things.
I think I may have participated in this thread a long time ago. However, I have some new ships since then.
U.S.S. Lafayette (Noble Class) for General Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette (French General that participated in the American Revolution)
U.S.S. Norseman (Envoy CLass) for the people of Scandanavia (Vikings).
U.S.S. Missouri (Stargazer Class) for the state.
U.S.S. Truman (Excalibur Class) for the 33rd President of the United States.
U.S.S. Praetorian (Miranda Class)--a guard of a Roman Emporer.
I have other ships, but these are the ones I put the most thought into. For my Klingon ships, I usually take a name the random name generator gives me. I've tried looking some of them up, but I haven't found translations for many.
Okay my main has always had the USS Smokey (Recon sci). He was a famous horse duffer in the Kimberley Australia. Seeing as though my Character was a refuge Bajoran Minner who worked the Kimberley's, it fitted into his bio. For my runabout I have Bandit. From Smokey and the Bandit. My defiant is called the USS Phantom from the comic book series and my other Sci vessel is called the USS Chaplain. After Charlie Chaplan.
I won't go into Thors ships, because you may as well look up Stargate ship names. Just named my runabout the X-302.
And my Klingon Alt ship names are all after Australian Female named cities. Currently IKS Adelaide I think.
USS Byrd - fleet escort named after polar explorer Adm. Byrd
USS Korolyov - assault cruiser named after Soviet space designer Сергей Павлович Королёв
USS Beagle - a science vessel named after Darwin's ship
USS Oppenheimer - my sci officer's advanced escort, named after atomic bomb designer
I like ancient astronomers, too. My flash drive is named Albategnius, but I held off on the name because there's already a USS Al Batani mentioned somewhere in trekdom. Kepler, my ipod, found its way into one of my sci officer's ships, though.
USS Tethys (Prometheus-class) = named for the greek Titaness and sea goddess
USS Sedna (Luna-class) = named for an Inuit sea goddess and also a trans-Neptunian object
USS Stiletto: Small, sleek, deadly. Felt like a natural fit for the little devil.
USS Martin-A: I called my pet runabout Martin as a joke. Naturally the Flyer, replacing the Runabout, should be named after it.
USS Arrowell: Another in a series of ships named after unrelated RP characters.
I've got several names for ships, but there's 3 I use for all my alts, Diomedes and Gallonigher, and Bradbury. The first 2 I took their names from star systems from the PS1 game "Colony Wars" (One of my favs of all time). Diomedes just sounds like an awesome Escort name, and Gallonigher for my Excelsiors/T5 cruisers.
Bradbury is my flagship though, I saw the listing for a ship called Bradbury NX-72307 in a star trek magazine (looong time ago) and it just resonated for me.
My first ship was the USS Evanescence. Named for the rock group of the same name. I love their music and I heard them on the local radio (Arkansas when I lived there) before they made it big. My current ship is the USS Polaris. Named for the Northern Star by which navigation was founded. I am going to change the name of my Runabout (Currently Rio Grande as I am from Texas) to Ursa Major, and my Type-8 to Ursa Minor. When I do get the Delta Flyer, I may call it Northern Star.

USS Freeman (Light Cruiser, and Freeman II escort)
USS Black mesa (Heavy escort)
USS Overwatch (Tactical Escort)
USS Lambda Core (Delta-class shuttle)
Galaxy-X Class Cruiser
A term from ancient Greek referring to a sword or justice, the act of cutting.
sounded cool for a little ship to have a name meaning it doesn't quit
Science captain: Uss Hyperion, Sovereign class
Hyperion is one of the Greek Titans, cool name for a battleship.

Do I really need to explain this?

My Type-8 is Tayaout, my runabout Agaguk and my Delta Class Shutttle Iriook.
*glares above* Hey!
My Galaxy X is named USS SDF-1 Macross. As you can tell I really like anime.
The Fighter Jet Canada produced back in the 50's that was canceled due to politics.

LOL
My Type-8 shuttle is named Alhazen after the Persian scientist and my runabout is named the Shoshone.
USS Stiletto: Small, sleek, deadly. Felt like a natural fit for the little devil.
USS Martin-A: I called my pet runabout Martin as a joke. Naturally the Flyer, replacing the Runabout, should be named after it.

Wanted to make a Star Destroier, so I outfitted a Star Cruiser with 6 turrets and 2 torps.
Awesome. Always nice to see other Outlaw Star fans about. I've seen a few Gene Starwinds running around, always makes me smile.
Almost all my ships are named after Gundam ship classes.
U.S.S. Argama
U.S.S. Ra Cailum
U.S.S. Nahel Argama
U.S.S. Endless Waltz
U.S.S. Musai (Runabout I used for The Vault >.>)
Okay so Endless Waltz isn't an actual ship class, but I thought it made a sweet ship name anyway heh.
NX-Fortinbras, and the NX-Polonius
Bradbury is my flagship though, I saw the listing for a ship called Bradbury NX-72307 in a star trek magazine (looong time ago) and it just resonated for me.
You must have the Mirror Universe Sedna. That's it - Mirror Universe!
I'm on to you, you imposter!
