I have named my science ships after...scientists

U.S.S. Seaborg, Glenn Seaborg, American nuclear chemist, Nobel Prize winner and discoverer of several elements (including Seaborgium, named for him)

U.S.S. Ketterle after German physicist Wolfgang Ketterle

U.S.S. Hertzsprung after Ejnar Hertzsprung, co-inventor of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram used in stellar classification.

I may recycle Seaborg, I have a special love of the name. I've tried to steer clear of anyone too famous to avoid duplication so there's probably not a U.S.S. Feynman, Hawking or Pauling in my future.

My Ferengi tac now flies the USS Moral Bankruptcy. It made me nuts that its 1 letter too long and I had to spell it in one word, but still. He's a mercenary and works for everyone, no loyalties, no ethics.

My S31 Betazoid got command of the USS Sentinel, though I found it not too original. He's in Starfleet Intelligence, internal affairs, and 'watches the watchmen', so it was fitting. I also had the VNV Nation song in mind.

I wanted to give my Science Ship a proper name, and I thought U.S.S. Cassiopeia would seem to fit best for a ship of this class.

    Dedication Plaque
    Flyby

Cassiopeia is a constellation in the northern sky. It was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century Greek astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations today. Cassiopeia is easily recognizable due to its distinctive 'W' shape formed by five bright stars. Cassiopeia A was first seen in 1680. In the sky Cassiopeia sits with Andromeda on the South side, Perseus on the South East and Cepheus to the North. She is opposite The Big Dipper, and can be seen the clearest in early November. In Greek mythology it was considered to represent the vain queen Cassiopeia, who boasted about her unrivaled beauty.

The name of my main character's previous ship's name, a light cruiser, was called the Sullivans after the destroyer of the same name. No reason for it, it was just something to fill the space.

The name of the current ship my main character flies is the USS Kumari, after the Andorian battle cruiser from the Enterprise series. I figured, at least in my personal game fiction, the name has seen continued use even after the the Andorian forces were merged into Starfleet, thus validating Shran's prediction that the Enterprise and Kumari names would be used on future ships. The Ushaan-class starship Kovac "captains" also seemed to fit the name.

I've also got plans to use other names names Grimlock (after the Transformers Dinobot of the same name, and for use on an Akira-class escort), Zea Dorsa (after a plain on Mars), and evantually, Kearsarge (after the Civil War sloop of war that engaged and defeated the Confederate raider Alabama). All of these ship's names were originally inttended to be used in a peice of fan fiction I was developing, but never wrote as I never manage to think of a story that would have satisfied me.

I also have an Andorian Engineering secondary character currently in a ship called the Monitor, after the Civil War ironclad of the same name. My intention, if I decide to play her out further, is to have her captain cruisers, all of which are named after famous warships of some kind.

    Oh let's see here:

T1 Shi'Kahr Variant - USS Cairo, now discharged, came from a Star Trek PBEmail Sim I was in years ago, now retired sim.
T1 Constitution - USS Vienna - name it came with, I liked it and left it.

Aurora Variant - USS Daybreak - took the Nova, Aurora, Quasar and put it through the Thesaurus and Daybreak was one of the names that came back that I thought sounded like a ship name I liked.

Horizon Variant - USS Odym - she has pieces of each of the three ships in that line and when thinking of Hope I thought of the Blue Lanterns who wield the blue power of hope (Green Lantern Comics) and their home planet on Odym.

Discovery Variant - USS Impulse - from a Star Trek PBEmail Sim I still play to this day. My character is even the same general character, class, etc from that sim. Although in the sim the Impulse is Prometheus class and her registry starts with a 7 and isn't quite this far forward in time ;)

Luna Variant - USS Einstein - based on the name of a fanfic ship I was working on years ago, long since abandoned. That ship was supposed to be fast, lots of weapons, and had similar lines to the Luna.

Destiny Variant - USS Darwin - that's the name I recommended for this tier when they had the T5 naming contest so I stuck with it.

I always go for mythical sounding names with a hint of reference to other sci-fi or anime series, or just pure Trek reference.

Why did you pick it any real reason or was it just random post it here.
All my ships and characters are named the way they are, because of their backgrounds and origins.
    Mine was the USS Sentinel...
Ooh!! So is mine, at least on my alt. :D

Since she is the only member of her species out in the galaxy and acts as a Sentinel and Exploring Ambassador, U.S.S. Sentinel seemed like a good name.

The USS NI, named for my old SWG guild and city.

The USS Belligerant, because my captain is a Tellarite and it seemd appropriate!

My Ferengi's ship on Tribble is the USS Aquisition.

I tend to name my ships differently, a new ship, a new name. Thus far I've used Aquila, Altair, Resolute, Archon, Enyo.

Aquila and Altair are names I've used in private programming projects over the years, so they have meaning to me in that sense.

The other names are just cool names for ships, I thought :)

I have been using ship names from the first 6 original Navy frigates. With the exception of Constitution and Constellation, for obvious reasons.

    Congress
    President
    United States

    and the current ship

    USS Chesapeake

Hull number is the year Chesapeake was commissioned.

I've seen at least 2 or 3 USS Sentinels before I picked the name. It was what made me hestitate; I expected to see more. But in the end, it was the best option from my other ideas. Based on the background of the character, I also considered USS Nigh****ch (as a reference to Babylon 5), USS Sleep Dealer (reference to the movie as well as the all Vulcan crew with their nerve pinch) and USS Watchman (as reference to Watchmen, obviously).

Funny, I think every Ferengi has or had a USS Acquisition at a point. I know... well, one Ferengi without that name, lol My RA still has the USS Tongo Parlour, and might get a sister ship, USS Dom'Jot one day. My Ferengi tac had the USS Obscene Wealth and USS Eternal Greed before the USS Moral Bankruptcy. Still searching for good names for the T4 and 5 ships... I fear USS Grand Nagus Gint won't fit in. :-/

    U.S.S. Discovery, NCC-98615 (Excalibur-class cruiser)

Before I even got the game, I knew my main ship had to be called 'Discovery' - just sounds 'right' for a Starfleet vessel, with similar connotations to 'Venture' and 'Voyager'. Plus, it's continuing the grand Starfleet tradtion of naming ships after early spacecraft, in this case the Shuttle Orbiter Discovery.
I really liked the look of the Excalibur class, and how nicely it combined the profile of the Constitution class and design elements from the Sovereign class, so that's what I went with for the ship - picked a suitably memorable (well, to me, anyway!) registry number, and I was good to go. :)

    U.S.S. Endeavour, NCC-101700 (Constitution-class light cruiser)

'Endeavour' sounded appropriate for my TOS-era Constitution - sounds similar to 'Enterprise', again, with the same connotations. As for the dedication, there's the Shuttle Endeavour, plus H.M.S. Endeavour, on which Captain Cook sailed on his first 'Voyage of Discovery' - both make suitable namesakes, methinks! ;)
The registry number, 101700 is something of an 'easter egg' (or, at least, an attempt at one...). I wanted to have my Constitution with a 'canon' registry of 17XX (1786, for example) - unfortunately, the limits imposed by the game didn't permit that. '101700' looks close enough on the hull, as well as being i the right range for the STO era. Plus, the 'easter egg' is that it's a combination of the registries of the Constellation and Constitution (1017 and 1700, respectively) - the idea being that the number alludes to both, giving it a feel of 'authenticity' (again, in theory...! ;) )

    U.S.S. Eagle, NCC-92526 (Miranda-class light cruiser)

I toyed with both 'Eagle' and 'Resolute' for the name of my starting ship, before deciding that the latter would be better-suited for a Defiant class ship (can't wait to get one of those!). 'Eagle' is pretty obvious, named after the Lunar Landing Modules from the Apollo Program.
92526 was the starting registry, and that worked fine for me. However, when I first took command, it was configured as a Centaur class ship - can't stand that ship, as IMO it's just a kit-bash with mis-scaled parts and no secondary hull (where the hell's engineering going to go?!?). So, after an extensive 'refit' (basically transplanting the dedication plaque into a new ship!), the Eagle re-entered active service as a Miranda class ship...

...only to be mothballed almost immediately in favour of the Endeavour. Fate can be so cruel... ;)

That's my mini armada at present - I'm already looking forward to adding Defiant/Prometheus class ships to the roster in due course...

I go with themes for ship names for each character. The exceptions are the Light Cruisers. Sometimes I just name them something amusing.

For Vance (Tac), I went with a Roman theme.
Light Cruiser - U.S.S. Invictus (actually just a Latin word. My Light Cruisers )
Escort - U.S.S. Gladius (Roman short sword)
Heavy Escort - U.S.S. Pilum (Roman heavy javelin)
Tactical Escort - U.S.S. Legionary (A legionary is an individual Roman soldier.)
Fleet Escort - U.S.S. Legatus (NX-99476) (Legatus were generals second only to the Emperor, and 476 was the official end of the classic Roman Empire.)
Advanced Escort - U.S.S. Centurion (NX-98117) (Centurions were in charge of 100 Roman soldiers. 177 AD was when the Roman Empire was at it's most expansive.)
Runabout - U.S.S. Tiber (The river Rome was founded upon)

For Hank (Tac), a TOS era ship captain in the modern era, I decided to go with a WWII theme. Names are of famous Naval ships, commanders, and sailors.
Background - He commanded a refitted Ranger-class ship, U.S.S. Samuel B. Roberts. (Named after the USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413), "the destroyer escort that fought like a battleship" at the Battle off Samar at the Battle of Leyte Gulf.)
Light Cruiser - U.S.S. Johnston (Named after the U.S.S. Johnston that was in Taffy 3 along with the U.S.S. Samuel B. Roberts at the Battle off Samar at the Battle of Leyte Gulf.)
Cruiser - U.S.S. Ernest E. Evans (Commander Evans was the skipper of the U.S.S. Johnston.)

Future ships will be named after the U.S.S. Juneau, The Sullivan Brothers, Chester Nimitz, and "Bull" Halsey.

For my Liberated Borg, Eurydice (Sci), I decided on a theme of classic science fiction writers. Her Light Cruiser, U.S.S. Heyneman (Named after Jamie Hyneman of MythBusters), is the oddball. I had no ideas for here theme at that time.
Science Vessel - Robert Heinlein (Starship Troopers is a favorite novel of mine)

My Trill Engineer Jezira has ships that are and will be named after mechanical and aerospace engineers.
Light Cruiser - U.S.S. Babbage (Named after Charles Babbage, inventor of the difference engine.)
Cruiser - U.S.S. Dumont (Named after Alberto Santos Dumont, a Brazillian early aviation pioneer.)

USS Yv'Nalaryn: Another of my TES4 characters.
USS V'nashir (current): Another of my gf's TES4 characters.
USS Ethe (runabout): Named after a TES4 river.

USS Byzantium: Just thought it sounded nice.
USS Roanoke: After the island, location of the Lost Colony. Again, thought it sounded nice.
