Cause in RP my character is pretty headstrong, I decided to add to that image, and seemed an appropriate name to give a ship, considering we're in war at the moment.
I've used the same name for all my ships as I levelled up. USS Thunderchild, after the name of the ship from War of Worlds (musical version not the bloody terrible Tom Cruise rubbish).
All I did was rename the old ship, pop the name on the new, and add a new letter.
USS Navajo was the name of the ship I served on as 2nd/CSciO when I used to play with Bravofleet. Thought it was time I had the chance to command it lol.
USS Astoria (CA-34) - WWII - New Orleans Class Heavy Cruiser - My father-in-laws ship from 1939 to 1942, where it was sunk due to damages it incurred during the Battle of Savo Island - Guadalcannal Campaign. The group of 9 ships he was with were devided into 3 groups of 3 to create blockades into the main channel. These blockades were weak at best and a group of about 10 Japanese ships snuck into his area of the channel and attacked. The Japanese ships immediately disabled and sunk the to Heavy Cuisers (sister ships to the Astoria). The Astoria was able to inflict damage to a few ships before the damage it was delt disabled its rudder control. The Japanese broke off from the fight and abruptly left. The Astoria took over 65 hits. The zig zagged out to sea where numerous attempts to ship the ship were made, but she sunk just after noon the next day.
The Astoria was stationed at Pearl Harbor, but was out on patrol the day of the attack. It was present in the Battle of Midway and took part in a number of TFs, the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Southwestern Pacific Cruise, and the Solomons were it sank at Savo.
There were 2 vessels named Astoria before CA-34 (a sailing vessel (2400 ton sloop)1869, and AK-8 fuel suppy vessel 1920), and one after - CL-90 Cleveland Class Light Cruiser 1944 (WWII).
My father-in-law served to the end of the war on another cruiser and station at Pearl Harbor. He didn't talk much about the battles he took part in. He died in 1998 at age 75.
U.S.S. Corbomite after TOS episode "The Corbomite Manuever". Of course, I had to name it's captain "Bailey". Maybe a bit cheesy, but that's one of my favorite episodes. My other is U.S.S. Finality. Just sounded like a cool name to me. After that last post above, I feel my names are pretty small and meaningless. I got much respect for our vets, especially WWII vets. My grandfather was at Normandy and Battle of the Bulge. He was a medic and saw some heavy stuff but seldom talked about it. I could tell it bothered him deeply all his life. Some soldiers pay the price of death. Others pay the price of living through things I can't imagine. I wonder which is the greater price. Salute!

Kudos to you sir, I was tempted to call one the USS Nathaniel or the USS Jeff Wayne. I love that musical
Yeah, go ahead and laugh that there is already a Dervish-class starship, but I'm sticking to it. I was using the name writing Trek fics a decade ago, well before STO's Dervish-class was a single polygon facing in 3Dstudio (or whatever they use).
I really just liked the sound of the name. For those of you not in the know, a dervish is someone who follows the Tariqah, a Muslim lifestyle of poverty in which the practitioner begs to learn humility and then redistributes what he has earned to other poor.
I am using my postings from when I was in the USAF. All are escorts, except for the Lackland which was the light cruiser.
USS Lackland
> Lackland AFB, where I received basic training
USS Sheppard
> Sheppard AFB, technical training
USS Keesler
> Keesler AFB, more technical training
That was the sequence of starter and science ships -- the names are those of the Pleiades -- the seven sisters, daughters of Atlas and Pleione in Greek Mythology, but also the most prominent stars in the Pleiades star cluster.
I also played around with a tier 4 and tier 5 escort to see what they were like. For those, I looked to names from the Hyades -- another star cluster, and in mythology, the half-sisters to the Pleiades. Those were:
U.S.S. Phaesyle
U.S.S. Phaeo
The names themselves vary depending upon the source. They've been around for a very long time and different accounts use different variations. (Especially the Hyades, it seems.) I just picked the ones that worked out the best for me.
Well, my main vessel was the USS Mjolnir, because I'm...how can I put this...sort of obsessed with Norse mythology.
However, that is my Fleet Escort. I recently decided to pick up a secondary Tier 5 vessel, so that I could be a little more diverse, should the need ever arise. Specifically, my fleet needed more Cruisers. So, I purchased the Assault Cruiser and promptly named her the USS Vanilla Ice.
I only wish I could make her a convertible. That way, I could put the ragtop down so my hair can blow.
USS Starstalker (NCC-2117) was the prototype for the Starstalker-class patrol cruiser. The design comes from a great fan book: Starfleet Prototype; The Journal of Innovative Design and Ideas - Issue 25: 2291-2292.
... asll I had to do was drop the 9 at the start of the sequence and there we have it... new Attack Cruiser.

Named after a 23rd century Miranda precursor I designed while living in Cologne, also for BSG.
U.S.S. Belafonte (25th century Constitution refit)
Named for Steve Zissou's Belafonte from 'The Life Aquatic'.
U.S.S. Quadriga (Cheyenne class)
Named for the a type of four-horse chariot in antiquity (because of the four nacelles).
If anybody needs starship names, post in my alien name thread (see sig). I'll research names by whatever parameters you have.
