USS Sleipnir: Sleipnir is Odin's eight-legged steed (found it cool with the 8 nacelles ship I have ^^)

I named my T4 cruiser Winds of Uranus. Because of the powerful winds on Uranus that move at 200 meters a second sometimes. That is great power. A force to be weary of.

Well my captain's name is a conglomeration of the name of a hero of the Texas Revolution and first president of the Republic of Texas, and the surname of the first American land grant holder in Texas, Green DeWitt. I command the USS Karankawa, name of an indigenous tribe that lived along the Texas Gulf Coast, and who all succumbed to disease by the Civil War. They were fierce warriors, and compassionate humanitarians. They sat on the beach and cried with the survivors of a Spanish shipwreck and then took them into their village.

Starfleet should be both compassionate in their efforts to aid those in need, and be fierce warrios when combat is the only remaining option.

My alts use randomly generated names for ships, and my KDF character is all random as well.

I started my "career" as a Smuggler in SWG (well, ok, as a BH, but I didnt get addicted until I went smuggler)

It has influenced my ship names since:

    USS Voodoo - Light Cruiser
Named for my old ship in SWG, which was named for my old and current computer's manufacturer. I never liked this ship name. I should have gone with the model name of the computer, the USS Omen sounds much better. USS Voodoo ____ something... two words are needed, voodoo does not work well as a noun.

    USS Eris - Escort
Named for the goddess of chaos, before I settled on a naming scheme.

    USS Bishamon - Heavy Escort
the Japanese god of luck in combat. Here I stumbled back into my Smuggler's ways, focusing, at least for a time, on Luck.

    USS Tyche - Tactical Escort
Greek god of luck, specifically prosperity.

    USS Mj

USS Yorkshire ... because its a lovely piece of england and it was worthy of being a ship name http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorkshire

My Engi captain's Galaxy is named Yorkshire, as well. Much for the same reason. I'll be transferring him to the Lexington when he gets his Sov. Which will obviously be named for another famous WWII US aircraft carrier. Either that, or the Hornet.

My Prometheus is named the USS Perseus... think there's no need for explaination there, but it was just in keeping with great Greek mythological figures that the class is named after, and Perseus just happens to be one of my favorites.

I had the USS Nassau at one point. Not cuz I like the place in particular, but I sure do like the Sloop John B.

My ship name is taken from the Turkish language. Abi means brother and Arkadash means friend. I was stationed at Izmir Air Station back in the 90's.

I named my latest (Science) ship after the scientist Dr. Edward Pretorius from the Jeffrey Combs horror movie From Beyond. I took my ship's motto from that movie too, although I was very tempted to go with Jeffrey Combs' line "He was a GENIUS!"

I believe there was a mad scientist called Septimus Pretorius in The Bride of Frankenstein classic horror movie as well, so I named my runabout the Septimus.

there is some Boer leader named Pretorius, and a Roman named Septimus from actual history so it works that way too.

My current ship is named the "Schadenfreude"

This is a German loan word meaning: pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others

Since Klingons have an aggressive warrior culture that enjoys fighting and conquering their opponents I thought it an appropriate name :D

When I first started playing STO and making tons of mistakes I named my starter ship "SNAFU" - if you don't know what that stands for look it up online heheh

My father served on the Lex, and when she was decommissioned my hometown won the bid to permanently park her on the bayfront as a museum and convention center. Helps being a major navy city, and the last homeport of the ship while she was still in service. Lots of naval aviators from the Nam era on got certified on carrier landings just offshore on the Lex.

Since 90% of the game is involved around shoot and kill anything that moves....

...I figured a sassy captain needed her ships names to match her war-time temper.

USS Harlot - fear a woman scorned.

USS Aphrodite - Sounds inviting doesn't it? Get em close then open fire.

USS Sagan - Named after the great science popularizer Carl Sagan who did more for bringing science into the home than just about anyone else in the latter half of the 20th century. A visionary, a skeptic and a true humanist. We were robbed of a great man way, way to early. As a people we would be so much better for having him with us.

USS Arroway - Named after Eleanor Arroway in the novel 'Contact' by Carl Sagan. A wonderful character who's wonder of the universe is a projection of Carl's own admiration and fascination with all things of the Cosmos.

USS Skeptic - A scientific skeptic is one who questions the reliability of certain kinds of claims by subjecting them to a systematic investigation. For a DSSV I considered the name very apt.

On my alien character, I've named them all after false gods and place associated with religious crises'. I tried to make a Vorta, so i figure star fleets teasing her.

    USS Glykon (light cruiser)
    USS Amarna (Long range science)
    USS Avignon (Reconnisaince science ship)

On my human, they're named after people associated with Don Quixote

    USS Cervantes (Light cruiser)
USS Don Quixote ( Constitution class)
    USS La Mancha (Heavy cruiser)
    USS Sancho Panza (Galaxy class)

USS Knight Errant and Knight Errant B (Defiant and prometheus class, respectively)

USS Nautilus (Prometheus - Class) The submarine from the Jules Verne novels "Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea" and "The Mysterious Island." Also, I found a totally sweet desktop wallpaper of a Federation Starship 8 or so years ago called the Nautilus and have loved the name ever since.

USS Masamune (Maelstrom/Gryphon kitbash) Japan's greatest swordsmith.

USS Muramasa (Defiant/Vigilant kitbash) Another Japanese swordsmith, whose own madness and violent tendencies were said to have been passed to the blades he made, and as such are thought of as cursed blades that create a bloodlust in those who wield them.

USS Excalibur (Noble/Sovereign kitbash) King Arthur's fabled Sword. However, my main reason for naming it this is as an homage to the Ambassador - class and later Galaxy - class USS Excalibur from the Star Trek: New Frontier book series.

USS Eureka (Luna - Class) Named for the Syfy series Eureka. Seemed fitting.

    U.S.S. Revenant

a person who returns as a spirit after death; a ghost

Named after Victor Davion's Revenants, from Mechwarrior, Battletech, Victor Davion being one of my favorite characters, along with Phelan Kell and Archer Christifori

Also any game involving ships of some kind or another I always have a U.S.S. Revenant in the mix somewhere...since someone mentioned NavyField which I haven't played in quite a while.

I've picked names that I thought fit the ship.

USS Pulsar: Nova class science vessel.

USS Wabash: Cheyenne class heavy cruiser.

    USS Shinano: Galaxy class explorer.

USS Campbeltown: Akira class heavy escort.

    USS Sangamon: Danube class runabout.

Shinano and Campbeltown were both named after WWII warships. Shinano was sister ship of the Yamato and Musashi, both of which also had Galaxy class ships named after them. HMS Campbeltown was packed full of explosives and rammed into a German drydock, which is a really awesome story you should read more about.

I've had other ships, of course, but when I can't think of an appropriate name, I just reach into the grab bag of mythology and pull out a god or goddess. It feels lame and unoriginal, but they're still good names for starships.

    U.S.S. McAuliffe, Starfleet registry NCC-91986.

Named for schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe, who died in the Challenger space shuttle explosion. The ship's registry marks the date (minus the required 9 prefix): 1986. Did you know that according to official nomenclature, the late Mrs. McAuliffe doesn't actually qualify as an astronaut? Has to do with altitude reached. Fortunately, they gave it to her anyway. ;)

Patton (Miranda-Shi Kar-Centuar mix) : Named after General George S. Patton, US General during World War II, died of injuries sustained from car crash in 1945.
Rommel (that's my Constitution): Named after Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, German leader during World War II, died of self-poisining to save family from retrubution after being mistakenly assosiated (although sympahtised) with Operation Valkerye, the plot to kill Hitler in 1944.
I plan to name all of my ships after World War II leaders, including C aptain Winters of Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne. Watch Band of Brothers if you don't know him.

My current main vessel is the USS Elysian, a Deep Space Science Vessel. It comes from the term "Elysian Fields" which has a relation to the heavens and what-not; perfect for space, especially uncharted and untouched space, which is basically a DSSV's specialty.

Other ship names I have had are the USS Murakami, named after a favorite author of mine. The USS Wayfarer, a pretty self-explanatory name. The USS Resolute and USS Emissary, both escorts and both with names that play off the Defiant name and DS9 in general. Then two early science vessels; a Nova-class named the USS Aurora and an Olympic-class named the USS Borealis.

I prefer to give my science vessels "ethereal" quality names, they seem to fit the purpose.
