Cipher Nemo, it looks like someone found the answer to the corrupt files and can't launch issues. The download zip file people are using Windows built in zip program. They need to use WinRAR.

    http://www.rarlab.com/
Since we know better we didn't even consider it. Plus I download the CB .exe file. But I use WinRAR.

    Nice find. :)

There might be other reasons as well, such as failing Internet connections that lose track of packet count/IDs.

Just thought I would also add this as I have helped several other people with it. I have reported it to the Devs but no reply :( Anyway this is just a copy of another post I made earlier.

Its was in response to people have weird artifacing with ATI cards making the game all but unplayable.

I have helped several people with a similar problem to yours. Try this and I expect it will work for most of you with ATI cards. I have even suggested it to the Devs but they have not even took the time to respond.

Anyway you first need to download ATI Tray tools http://www.guru3d.com/article/ati-tray-tools-/

Install the one that matches your OS ofc. Now when installed and running right click its tray icon and select 3D or Direct X 3d. Now select Settings.

Make sure AA/AAA/AF are all set to app controlled. I have never had a problem with AA and AAA forced with STO but some people do. So I would suggest setting it to App controlled for all.

Now heres the part that should help: From there select: Additional on the little Tabs.

Now look down to where it says: Geometry Instancing. If its unticked (Driver Defaults to Unticked) Tick it and press apply and ok. Now you can quit ATI tray tools if you like.

You never have to do this again as long as you don't install another driver.

Now fire up STO and see if the problems gone and I suspect it will.

I have never encountered any problem with Instancing on in any game. In fact some like STO and Gothic 3 rely on it. All it does is say you have a rock. Instead of loading 50 instances of it into your GFX memory it just loads the 1 because if said rock is the same in those 50 instances then whats the point of loading it in 50 times when it can be cloned from the 1 loaded rock Basically it.

Not all games use it but there absolutely no adverse effects from leaving it enabled. If I disable it in STO or Gothic 3 then those games are simply unplayable because of crazy artifacing.

Hope this helps and please try it. Only takes 5 mins tops to try.

Thanks! :) I've noted this and linked to your post inside of that artifacting item. That way if you ever want to update the process or make changes to your post, it will be there. I do not own an ATI card, so I won't be able to test or update this possible solution.

CB.exe? is this the answer for those of us with launcher issues? If so - where does one get it?

I have no idea what you're talking about. There is no "CB.exe" file in your installed STO files.

This patched the bins.hogg and exes.hogg files. This is most likely the last patch of open beta until STO goes into release with the head-start weekend.

I am currently trying to play on my work internet. The client will not update. I am wondering what ports have to be open to get this to and STO to work? Any ideas??

Good question. Hopefully someone with a network sniffer app can determine this?

As an alternative workaround, if you have STO installed on a home PC or somewhere other than work, you can update there, and copy over all of the files in Cryptic Studios\StarTrek Online\Live that have changed due to the patch. This will include the patch log, possibly a couple other files, and the patched "hogg" files in the bins folder. If it's a smaller patch, then you might only have to copy a couple hogg files, but it would still take a DVD or large thumbdrive to do it (hogg files are anywhere from 200KB to 2GB each, and there's 11 of them).

Yup, corrupted download or something wrong during the file compression/decompression process.

There was an update today (both EST and PST), but it only changed two files.

How to generate a client DUMP for Cryptic
If Cryptic devs ask you to provide a DUMP for an STO client freeze or crash, here's how to generate that report.
    1. Browse to the location where you installed STO. The default location is in your Program Files folder, or Program Files (x86) for 64-bit versions of Windows. You'll need to go here and even further into the Live folder.

      %PROGRAMFILES%\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live
      .
    2. Find the executable named crypticError.exe and launch it with the frozen STO client still running.
      .
    3. Find the process named GameClient.exe and select it.
      .
    4. Click on the "Send" button. Make sure the STO client and the CrypticError application are running during this entire process. This helps Cryptic trace and identify the cause of your client freeze/crash.

How to get a copy of your client settings
If a community member ever asks you for a copy of your client settings (ie: graphics settings) to help troubleshoot performance, here's one way.
    1. Browse to the location where you installed STO. The default location is in your Program Files folder, or Program Files (x86) for 64-bit versions of Windows. You'll need to go here and even further into the Live and then Localdata folders.

      %PROGRAMFILES%\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\Localdata
      .
    2. Open the only file here, Gameprefs.Pref with a text editor such as Notepad.
      .
    3. Select the desired text and copy it (right click and choose Copy or Ctrl-C). For just graphics settings, copy only the lines prefixed with PrefEntry GfxSettings.
      .
    4. Paste it into your post (ie: Ctrl-V).

How to verify your client data files
We've seen all sorts of file corruption when downloading the STO client from other sources. If you have problems installing or running STO, you might have a corrupted installer file or client data files (*.hogg files found in the "piggs" folder... Cryptic used this naming convention with CO as well). Although this method is not 100% accurate, it will let you know if a file is truncated or moderately to severely corrupted and whether or not you need to download these files again.
    1. Download and install a free checksum utility such as HackCheck Shell Extension for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
      .
    2. Browse to the location where you installed STO. The default location is in your Program Files folder, or Program Files (x86) for 64-bit versions of Windows. You'll need to go here and even further into the Live and then piggs folders.

      %PROGRAMFILES%\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\piggs
      .
    3. You'll see several files with the hogg extension in this folder. Repeat the following steps for each file.
      .
    4. Right click on a hogg file and choose "Properties".
      .
    5. Click on the "Checksums" tab and wait for the progress bar to indicate processing is complete. You'll only see this tab with the HackCheck Shell Extension installed. For other checksum software, follow their instructions for finding a file's checksums.
      .
    6. Compare your results with the current checksums for the latest patch. Some hogg files might remain the same through patches, and some might change. It really depends on what Cryptic fixes in each patch. You don't need to compare every type of checksum. Just pick one line to compare. If they don't match, delete them and run the launcher to let it patch (it will download the required hogg files again). If they match, then you might have issues related to something else.

Please don't quote the entire help posts. As for your hogg files, did you do an update? They're going to be different until you do an update and get synced with everyone else. If they're different after an update, then you have issues.

The checksums are not useful. Few people will ever have matching ones. Hoggs do not work that way, and you cannot verify them in this manner.

Here's the correct way to do this: in the launcher, click on 'options', and select 'force verify'. The launcher will do a proper check of the file hashes. You don't need to do anything else.

Sorry, that is incorrect. The hogg files are all the same for everyone. No one has unique hogg files unless they don't have the latest patch. Checksums are there to compare files. Compression does not vary if the source files are identical.

I updated all of the checksums for the hogg files as of the 2/01/2010 EST/PST patch.

This patched the bins.hogg and exes.hogg files. This is the 4th (last) day of headstart.

No, you're just wrong. Hogg files don't work that way. There is no particular expectation that they will be the same for everyone. (I hesitate to explain how they really work, as I'm not sure how much of that information is public)

Surely all the people with different hogg files in this thread would have clued you in by now.

Check again. Others have confirmed same files are the same. If they have different ones they're corrupt. I've also tested this on three of my PCs, thank you very much. Not sure where you're getting your information from, but it's wrong. Unless you can link something? Yeah, didn't think so.

Compression for files is a lossless compression based on algorithms. It's not like lossy compression with JPEG image files which yield varying results if different PCs compress the files manually multiple times.
