I'm writing up this quick guide to help people in posting their system information, updating drivers, etc. Hopefully this will help the community better help the open beta members who are experiencing issues.
Note:
Although community reps, devs, and other Cryptic employees might post here to help out, please remember that this forum is focused on giving and receiving peer-to-peer support. Also, please do not post about issues specific to your install or your PC in this thread. Start a new thread and post your information so others in the community can help. Thanks!╔════════════════════[ CONTENTS ]══════════════════════╗

If you're having problems or graphical glitches, please try a video driver update first. If you know your video card/GPU manufacturer, grab the latest driver package from their web site. For ATI and NVIDIA, they both have an all-in-one installer to update a large range of video card/GPU models. Intel is a different story.
How to determine which video card you have installed
To find your video card installed, run DXDIAG (the diagnostic tool for DirectX). Here's one way to do that.
- Hold down the Windows key and press the R key. If you don't have a Windows key, then go to "Run" from the Start menu.
.
- Type dxdiag into the box and press Enter or click "'Ok".
.
- Click on the "Display", "Display 1", or whatever tab designates your main gaming display device.
.
- Write down the three fields "Name", "Manufacturer", and "Chip Type" for your reference. You don't necessarily need all three of these, but with all three we are guaranteed to find out what video card or embedded GPU you are running. The name "ATI", "NVIDIA", or "Intel" should be in there.
How to determine which Windows OS you have installed
- Hold down the Windows key and press the R key. If you don't have a Windows key, then go to "Run" from the Start menu.
.
- Type winver into the box and press Enter or click "'Ok".
.
- The name of the Windows OS will be at the top, such as Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows 7 Ultimate, etc.
How to determine if your OS is 32-bit or 64-bit
- If you're running Windows XP: you'll be running 32-bit unless the name in the directions above include "x64 Edition", in which case you're running 64-bit. You're done!
.
- If you're running Vista or 7: hold down the Windows key and press the R key. If you don't have a Windows key, then go to "Run" from the Start menu.
.
- Type into the box and press Enter or click "'Ok".
.
- In the "General" tab, look under the section "System" and "System type" to find it.
ATI Radeon Drivers (latest version, 10.9 Catalyst)
NVIDIA GeForce Drivers (latest version, 258.96)
Intel Drivers (latest versions)
- Intel drivers are a mess. They don't have a unified driver package, so each individual chipset may be included with different driver packages. And to make matters worse, there's no chronological order as to what chipsets are in what packages. In order to download the latest drivers for your built-in Intel graphics chip, use the following link, select graphics, then either desktop or laptop, and select your GPU model:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx
How to give administrator rights to the client
This will give your client full administrator rights to your operating environment. This will also work on any executable as well. To run a setup/installer with Administrator rights, it is much easier to just right click on the executable and choose "Run as Administrator".
Note: This is only for
Windows Vista and
Windows 7 users. If you're having odd issues launching the game, allow the STO client to run with Administrator Rights. Here's how:
- Browse to the location where you installed STO. The default location is in your Program Files folder, or Program Files (x86) for 64-bit versions of Windows. (can someone please confirm the path?, thanks).
%PROGRAMFILES%\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online
.
- Find the executable (I'm at work, not home, so don't remember its name.. can someone confirm?)
.
- Right click on the file and choose "Properties".
.
- Click on the "Compatibility" tab.
.
- Put a check next to "Run as Administrator".
.
- Click "Ok" to save your changes and close the window.
How to generate a dxdiag report
If you're having additional problems after other troubleshooting, post in these forums and include a copy of your DirectX Diagnostic report.
- Hold down the Windows key and press the R key. If you don't have a Windows key, then go to "Run" from the Start menu.
.
- Type dxdiag into the box and press Enter or click "'Ok".
.
- If you're prompted with a question, just dismiss it for now. Let the progress bar finish before doing anything.
.
- Click on the "Save All Information" button.
.
- Click "Save" to save the file to your desktop (default location).
.
- Open up the newly created file (ie: double-click on it).
.
- Right click anywhere on the text and choose "Select All" (or press Ctrl-A).
.
- Right click anywhere on the text and choose "Copy" (or press Ctrl-C).
.
- Use a pastebin service such as http://pastebin.com/ to paste your copied DXDiag text (Ctrl-V to paste).
.
- Link your pastebin to your post.

If Cryptic devs ask you to provide a DUMP for an STO client freeze or crash, here's how to generate that report.

How to get a copy of your client settings
If a community member ever asks you for a copy of your client settings (ie: graphics settings) to help troubleshoot performance, here's one way.
%PROGRAMFILES%\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\Localdata
.
.
.
How to verify your client data files
We've seen all sorts of file corruption when downloading the STO client from other sources. If you have problems installing or running STO, you might have a corrupted installer file or client data files (*.hogg files found in the "piggs" folder... Cryptic used this naming convention with CO as well). Click on options at the top of the launcher and choose "force verify". When you close the options the launcher should verify all files. If it doesn't, close the launcher and restart it. I've removed the checksums here for the client files since we now have official customer support from Cryptic. If you continue to have problems with getting corrupted data files (ie: bad installer disk or corrupted download), please contact Cryptic.
Tips
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Also, your video card may be working much harder than needed. By default, most games will have an option called "vertical sync" disabled. This lets your GPU process as many frames as possible without any limits. If your GPU is powerful enough, it may be producing many more frames per second than your monitor(s) are capable of showing, and hence wasting processing power and generating more heat than necessary. The graphics option vertical sync will ensure that your GPU never renders more frames then your reported monitor refresh rate can show. This will keep your GPU from being maxed at out 100% workload. Note that this is a workaround for a GPU that is overheating and not a permanent solution to cooling issues. If your GPU is overheating with 100% load, then you still have a cooling problem that needs to be addressed.
.
.
For hard drive performance issues (not SSDs), try running a defrag. Windows' built in defragger works, but it's not necessarily the most desired method to achieve optimal results. Download, install, and use a free defrag tool that will perform better than Windows' built-in defragger, such as MyDefrag. If you are still experiencing slow hard drive performance, check to see how much free space is available on the drive. Drives with only 100s of MB free or single-digital percentage of free space will drastic decrease driver performance. This happens because not all of the data on a drive is neatly packed into one area. Instead, it is typically scattered around on a drive, especially if it has not been optimized during a defrag. So for example, even though your drive might report 1 GB of free space, the largest, physical chunk of space on the drive that is empty might be only 100 KB. Windows is then forced to shuffle around data to move room for larger files when copying and moving data (which occurs with the page file and other background processes even if you're not doing anything to the drive yourself).
Another factor that impacts loading times is graphic texture processing. Graphic textures are first loaded from your drive, possibly decompressed or extracted from a texture file, and then processed by your PC, utilizing mostly your GPU, with some CPU overhead. If you're running a PC and/or video card that do not meet the minimum requirements, you may experience incredibly long load times that appear to "freeze". To reduce loading time lag, change your graphic settings by showing advanced options, and disabling or turning down all items, and enabling half resolution.

Thanks for the help!
Absolutely! Thanks for mentioning that.
hope i helps you figure out wtf is wrong
Good, you have it linked now and I can see it (ie: GTX 285 video card, etc. in there).
But please post this in another thread so as not to clutter up this stickied thread if you need help with your PC and STO. Thanks!
Please link that in a new thread with a detailed description of what won't work so we can all help. Thanks.
Hehehe, thanks Tovan.
heres a link to my dxdial:
http://pastebin.com/m38b731b8
hope someone might have an idea of what to do...
Thanks! I'll add that to the op.
In the same forum this thread is in: http://forums.startrekonline.com/forumdisplay.php?f=70
I know all of my data files are in-tact, so perhaps tonight I'l ltry to run a checksum on them so that people can compare their checksums to known-good checksums. Perhaps Coderanger or others at Cryptic can give us a list of checksums on known-good files to have an official list?
Either way, I'll post instructions on this thread tonight to try to help those with possible corrupted file issues.

You might want to start a new thread so others can help you. The community isn't going to be looking here to help other members.
But as for your PC, why do you have a 1,000 watt power supply when you're only running a 9600 video card?
Yes. You can confirm this with the "Date modified" field of your pigg files with the last updated date I posted for each file. I've never seen Cryptic patch more frequently than once a day, and many hogg files are not patched in each update.
Its the older version before they Redesign the whole line and made them more power Friendly.
