"We are looking into the data for making lock box and phoenix stuff account wide, but..."

The title of this thread was not meant to be misleading, there simply was not enough room to fit the entire quote:
"We are looking into the data for making lock box and phoenix stuff account wide but don't have anything to announce."

    This is very interesting.

Yep. My pessimistic/realistic side would say there is no chance in hell they would ever do this. But the fact that they are actually making statements like this makes me think they actually might.

All that can be said about it is "We'll see."

It would be nice, but not gonna get my hopes up too much.

    Phoenix:

As low as the odds are for the UR and Epic, making those ships account-wide is a reasonable change.

For everything else, VR drop often enough that I'm fine with them being per-character.

    Lock Box / R&D pack:

That would be a nice increase in value, but wouldn't affect me that much since I want every captain to have a different theme and fly a different ship.

I would benefit when a ship happens to have a trait that could be useful to another captain, like "Unstable Anomalies" on my Paradox.

I am all good for making Phoenix boxes account wide as almost all that stuff was originally account wide in the first place and people who came later just missed the opportunity. The regular lockboxes...no, it would basically punish all those who spent billions of EC and sometimes hundreds of dollars to get a ship on a particular character, thus almost be insulting.

You've bought the same lock box ship multiple times? If not, what will you lose? Nothing.

This is to make a lock box ship an account wide unlock, not to move it to the C-Store.

    Phoenix box stuff?
Quite likely and would be a welcome change, especially with all those emotes/pets.

    Lockbox?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The consoles and traits perhaps but the ships? HAHAHAHAHAHA!

I know it won't be a popular opinion, but I disagree with making Lockbox and Phoenix Box ships/items account unlocks. I'd make Lobi Store ships/items account unlocks, though. And I'd implement a trade up option for Phoenix Vouchers.

That's why they are looking at the data. If they see a very miniscule percentage of multiple opens for a Lockbox Ship on an Account, it's no skin off their nose to make it an Account Unlock.

Doing so could generate more cash for them, as people who wouldn't partake before, may do so now as the Ships become availible to all appropriate Characters on an Account. And they would still be as rare as before as an individual Account can only fly a particular ship on one Character at a time.

I'm hopeful. Would be great to get access to some of the ships I got spread around.

Sadly, I think the chance of these ships becoming account unlock might be too large of a financial hit for Cryptic to take. The ships being character locked might be a necessary evil for the greater good.

I agree with @baddmoonrizin statement expect for the trade up option for Phoenix. Dont know exactly why but something makes me feel uncomfortable when that is mentioned.

I won't believe a word of this until it's actually in the game.

It will never happen, it's too big of a potential financial hit.

    Exactly.

Loss of X revenue from players who currently buy multiple copies of a ship -vs-
Gain of Y revenue from players who will open more packs and boxes because the reward is now more valuable to them

If X is estimated to be more than Y, Cryptic will probably keep lock box and pack ships single-character. If Y wins, we might get account unlocks.

I have no idea how many people currently buy multiple copies of a ship, or whether that number has changed over time. Cryptic on the other hand has exact numbers.

I'm guessing very few. But I'd also guess most players don't have them. There are some that do but.. well.. minority.

Just another attempt to placate players. They have no intention of making LB and phoenix stuff account wide. It would cut into profits.

If they say they're considering it, then I have no reason not to believe them.

I just don't expect things to change and honestly.. if it's going to cause a financial loss, then I hope it doesn't change. I enjoy this game, and if it's not funded it goes away. I get why people want this feature.. heck, I do too.. but I wouldn't want it if it means the game takes a loss that could prove detrimental to it's survival.

How much? What % of players has ANY LB ships? What % of those USE dupes?

The only lost profits would be from players who actually plan to acquire and use multiples of the same ship.

As someone who has spent billions of EC and thousands of irl dollars on this game. I fully support account unlock for all ships. Wouldn't upset me at all. I really want it.

Have you spent all that money trying to get multiple copies of ships for more then one character?

I don't believe anything coming from our "community manager". There was supposed to be a "Halloween" themed mish/event this year that just completely disappeared and hasn't been mentioned again. AND NO I'm not talking about the 100th Hearts and Minds replay. They spoke about something similar to the old TOS episode that was spookyish.

This is nothing new. They've said this on a few streams over the last year now.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

Kael addressed Halloween last month IIRC. They didn't have the time.

Well to be honest I am one of those who spend a lot of EC on the same items for different chars. I assume the Dynamic Power Redistributor of the respective lock box ship being the most expencive one.

While I do spend RL money on STO to support it I do not spend it for LB stuff, still invest the time one way or the other to generate the EC.

If the core rules now would change in a way that from this moment onwards you and I would never need to double spend again but did so in the past unnecessary, would it really be that big of a problem? :)

I have never tried to get a lockbox/promo ship because they are per character unlocks. If they would be account unlocks I might try at some point. If enough people share this sentiment and the data supports it in some way this might happen.pig-1.gif

It's still very vague. It's not new that they are looking into it, at least that is how it seemed to me.

My personal anecdotal experience tells me I have never bought any lobi or lockbox ship twice. It's just way too expensive, and I'd rather spend that money on buying myself an experience I haven't had yet, rather than having tho same on two characters. I actually bought some ships mostly for the traits or costume unlocks (like various Temporal ships to get more skin options for the Paradox, the Terran Crossfield to get the open hangar deck for my Prime Crossfield), though, but even then, just for one character.

Would love this but never going to happen... Cryptic would loose money on the people that buy multiples of things for alts that being said I would be happy and dont see a problem with them making Lobi items account wide or even account unlocks thats something we know they can do as there has been items in the past that had the account tradable flag by mistake and they quickly patched it.

Only from people who don't know that the exchange exists.

Lobi ships are around 200 million on the exchange. Lock box ships are 400 - 600 million.

Even for the 1.2 - 1.4 billion EC promo pack ships your numbers are off, since 9K zen gets you 700 - 800 million EC if you buy promo packs on sale and then sell them after the sale ends.

The systems are already in game to make it possible so the thing being looked into is the money to be made (or not) from doing something that is pro-playerbase. Sadly simply saying something is being looked at means that nothing changing is a very high probability.

The R&D boxes certainly would benefit from account wide status as the boxes themselves are pretty much worthless due to the flooding of R&D mats that is still going on and how lacking in options the R&D system itself is. Phoenix ships were account wide before they were phoenixxed (with a few exceptions for console players who've been screwed a couple of times) and the drop rate on the tokens needed is abysmal so account wide would be a really good move.

Big questions are would the current whales buy the same volume of keys as before and would account wide encourage fresh blood to waste their money on the gambleboxes or more demand from folk buying via the exchange. More ships going into "active" rosters would also mean more potential sales on slots so there's that to factor in as well.
