I don't think it will have any affect on FREE TO PLAY games like STO or TF2. Its games you have to buy like Battlefront 2 and Overwatch that will most likely be impacted.
My 2 ECs.
Also, it'll probably have the most impact on games where you legitimately have a chance to get nothing of any value out of it.

Agreed. STO ALWAYS gives you something, even if its the Lobi that's more valuable than say a bonus pool. You ALWAYS get Lobi. Team Fortress 2, just about anything you can get out of a crate is ALSO in the loot drop table, crafting table, and Mann Co. Store. ONLY thing different between say a random drop Sydney Sleeper and a Crate Sidney Sleeper is it may either be Strange (kill tracking) or Unusual (usually has some kind of cosmetic effect). NO performance enhancement whatsoever.

Basically MMO's going the lockbox way is kinda fair but still player discretion as there are quite a few that will go nuts and buy keys to actually open them..But lockboxes for a single player campaign game is just down right a TRIBBLE move..This is going by what shitloads of videos and news flooding the game networks..In short EA's "TRIBBLE you gamers attitude has come full circle to bite them mildly in the TRIBBLE.."

remember Spore from EA? Limited installs from an original CD-rom? This DRM was so good that its the most pirated game in history.
EA cares about money, not their gamers.
Lockboes in sto offer lobi, and you could winn a ship or some good stuff, or free inventory clogging items. The ship can be bought of Auction house. The keys you can sell for EC, so u dont even have to open the boxes.
No content in this game is locked behind a gamble model.
Sto is f2p, the moment its usbscription and the lockboxes arent needed, you dont get the ships as subscriber anyway. Maybe i am getting old, for me games where where u play and grind to get your stuff, and not all with 1000 bucks instead of 1000 hour gameplay or everyything unlcoked on day 1.
Zen ships are fine aswell, and for all faction alligned characters on your account. Manny games dont offer this accountwide unlocks these days, especially f2p games.
There are far more worse gambling models in f2p games, i happily moved from my last game year(s0 ago now, where u had to gamble in a wheel, to get a bound to char item, for an item which could improve or fail en decrease your gear. gamble on gamble, yes glad sto doesnt use such playerbase TRIBBLE models.
Get space rich, or farm, or for the sake of Nimbus 3 Gorn captain; enjoy playing the game.

Now that was a REAL controversy. Should game distributors be allowed to install ransomware on your computer in an effort to curb digital "piracy"?
Oh yeah. And the death of lootboxes honestly ain't gonna come from the pretty much useless and bought for US government. The rest of the world on the other hand....
Ain't the US currently formulating a law strictly covering all games containing lootboxes to be Adult Only because its as threatening to a youths growing up process as gambling is? I do not see STO sitting that one out if it really came to pass; regardless of its LBs being less outrageous than Battlefront 2s LBs.
When China made the big fuss about the lockboxes and making public the drop rates, did they ever make good on that? Did we ever get the drop rates for this game?
Personally, I really feel that lockboxes are a cheap shot and a low blow for trying to make quick cash with as little effort as possible. There are so many better ways to make money from a video game, or more so, a game with an IP as loved as Star Trek or Star Wars. Corporate Greed and higher ups being out of touch really seems to kill these things. Lootboxes themselves aren't inherently bad but it's how they're being utilized that makes them bad/manipulative/gambling/what have you. The boxes in Battlefront II were clearly on the wrong side of this argument. The Boxes here and in SWTOR aren't AS bad but they're still designed to waste money than actually provide rewarding items for people. It's really one of the things that hurts the game most. People with expendable income blow huge amounts of money on this stuff while people without tend to be overlooked, as they're not spending real money on this stuff. As such, instead of getting content based on what people want at prices low enough that more people would pay for, we just get more carrot and stick lotto boxes that turn away more casual players from wanting to spend money on the game.

... will do just as little with their equally corrupt governments.
While I would normally agree...the EU have been doing some odd things lately and acting like they aren't a corrupt government in many ways. Course that could just be a cover for Germany and Austria stealing everyone's money.... Anyways, there is actually a real chance that there could be stuff done in some EU countries...which could lead to it being an issue with the EU as a whole. There is more chance of status quo of course...but the chance of this mucking things up for F2P games because EA double dipped and got greedy ain't exactly small either.
Gotta agree..EA basically didnt f itself over but most of the gaming world..
But MMO's are a different league all together as most have monthly/LT subscription bases and are constantly evolving..Where as, for example, battlefront 2, was a one time purchase which was never going to evovlve further than what it is because it is marketed as a one time buy game but riddled with greedy MT's in it as EA's f'éd up attitude to slap gamers in the face and say give us your money or else you cant even play a non MMO game made by us..
If a law is put into effect that pans every game..MMO's will be TRIBBLE because microtransaction can potentially get killed off thereby trimming off the MMO player base..

did anyone point out to that rep that some games containing lootboxes can be downloaded for free?
Inorite? I remember when I was working a summer job at Dollar General ages ago, I had to point out to a mom once that her eight-year-old had put a PS1 game into her cart that was rated T for Teen. For practical purposes all you can really do is educate the parents, which may resolve itself fairly soon given the majority of parents are about to be millennials and Gen Z, if they aren't already.
For a freemium game like STO? Forget it, kids have been bypassing age verification since there was age verification, myself included. All the parent can do is not allow their kid to use their credit card (which they frankly ought to be doing anyway).

Why do I need personal accountability when I have a whole society that I can organize around the mission of protecting me from predatory scams? Isn’t that the point of having all these worthless governments and militaries? If they’re not working for me then I have no need for them. We should all quit paying our taxes.

It doesn't necessarily matter whether an age verification can be bypassed. Just having the extra step can discourage people from even bothering in the glut of products available. It can also mean that certain advertisement avenues are closed off (like during commercial in kids shows in TV or even on youtube), that stores for iOS or Android will list the products in special categories seperate from those aimed at children.
It's not like kids are looking for "games that I can spend uncontrollable loads of my parents money on" that would cause them *want* to bypass any checks and go out of their way looking for them.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
Personal responsibility and self discipline when it comes to lootboxes are the ways to go, some regulation on the matter would also be helpful
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

It's not about morality for me, though, it's about what is actually practically possible to do. IOW I do think there should be SOME regulation on this but there's a limit to what can actually be done from the Capitol. Here, it's likely more cost-effective to educate consumers than to regulate the companies making the games.

The kid in that article stole his parent's credit card, that's something to take up with the bank. One thing that could be done is to require two-step verification for online purchases, though Amazon would probably lose its TRIBBLE if somebody tried to put that in a bill.
