Open Letter to the Devs and Writers.

ssbn655ssbn655 Member Posts: 1,894 Arc User
First as a bit of intro a little about myself. I have been a Treker since day one with the very first episode that changed my life when I was 9 years old it inspired me to have a lengthy careeer in Aerospace. Later in life I have become close friends with people who made the magic happen on both large and small screen. I welcomed JJ Abrahms ideas in up until Into Darkness which came across as a hack rewrite of The Wrath of Khan. Sure I will admit I don't like the Enterprise in his films it seems clunky and off in its proportions. That said the cast did a great job catching the mannerisms of the TOS Cast. Kudoes for that!
Now to the heart of this open letter to the Devs and writers. Why do you suddenly feel the need to bring in that JJ universe into this game outside of pure profit? In AOY we are going back to the early days of the TOS timeline. Great! There are many many potential storys in that era that could be brought into the game without resorting to any of the JJ universe. Why not write game content that fits tht era instead? For instence we could explore the reasons behind the Federation/Romulan war which was refered to in Balence of Terror. You could have game play that explores what was taking up all the resources of the Romulan Empire for decades right up to the Crystline Enity which brought The federation and empire back in contact after what 70 plus years. The Trek universe is vast and full of potential game play as it is without having to bring in the JJ universe. So yeah I can understand the money end but seriously if you want to reach out to the neolite fans of the JJ universe why not create a better game for them that stands on it's own with it's own entire set of stories. Blending the two is a disservice to both groups of fans hardcore TOS and Hardcore JJ verse. I bet if you did that you would have two very strong player bases that would be happy and would be more conductive to hardline fans of both trying the others universe out.
Sure I'm going to get flamed for this but hey Trek is Trek but sometimes you have to respect that parts of it are seperate and shouldn't mix together and richly deserve thier own unique playgrounds. I look forward to AOY with the exception of the JJ verse parts. I really hope that one can opt out of doing them without failing or missing the storyline missions or content. Best of Luck with AOY.

Eh. I detest the JJverse, but even I think it's crazy to ask them for an opt out.

I agree about the STO content.

You've been playing STO how long, and haven't noticed the Devs eagerly fold in anything and everything that can from canon? We're practically are drowning in references. Now another part of that canon's been opened up to them and because you don't like it, this time it's a money grab? Phhsst. Get over yourself.

We visit the Mirror Universe, too, so universe hopping is not exactly unheard of.

And the whole game takes a central element from the new Star Trek movies - the Hobus Supernova. We owe an entire faction to this movie, basically.
It's surprising that it took so long for more Kelvin Timeline stuff to get into the game.

If you read the dev blog on the mission they will be adding, it mentions that people from OUR (STO Prime Universe) Timeline are taking advantage of the weakened barriers to exploit the Kelvin (AR) Timeline. Basically something similar to the Mirror Universe wanting to jack tech from our universe sort of thing in DS9. Not only that, the mission will be available to ALL faction players around lv 40, which I believe based on what I've heard, is well passed when the TOS captains will be in the 25th Century joining the rest of the playerbase.

Technically there already is your so called "Opt Out" option. There's a skip button in the mission journal. Don't like it? Don't play it. Simple as that.

I for one am excited to see how this integrates with the Temporal Cold War and everything else. There was apparently mention of the Sphere Builders in the blog about 0718, which does tie in with things we've dealt with involving the Krenim. We knew the Sphere Builders were coming. Now we have an idea of what's coming.

Face it, TOS was a great ride of storytelling with cheap sets, costumes and CGI.
JJ-Verse has shallow storytelling with expeinsive sets, costumes and CGI.

Best of both worlds. *Drop mic*

I'm interested in seeing how this plays out myself. I can't say I detest the JJ-Verse, I enjoyed the movies from an entertainment standpoint. But then, I guess I'm easily entertained.

For others, the opt-out "Skip" button has always been a part of every mission. I usually play them all, don't see a need to skip anything. But that's just me, and goes back to being easily entertained. ;)
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.

I thought about all the places we have visited and seen in STO.

We have gone to the past and the future. We have seen the Mirror Universe. We’ve been to the Delta Quadrant. We watched Romulas rise from the ashes to be New Romulas. We have fought the Borg and learned more about them. We have faced the Iconians and have even been to their past. We party on Risa for the summer and then with Q in the winter. We’ve been to Nimbus and solved the mystery there. We have been to DS9 and through the wormhole.

The thing of it is for me is that we’ve been a lot of places and seen a lot of things. I look forward to continuing the adventure both in our past (AOY) and in a alternate universe (JJ-verse). I don’t see how introducing this universe is a disservice to Trek fans. I just see it as another place to explore.

this 100% this is spot on I play because I am a fan of all trek I grew up with TNG and DS9 and have followed whenever I could and when 09 trek came out I was happy for it is an extension of trek for a newer age. It is not perfect but has some darn good moments so let us see what Cryptic does with the Kelvin and prime timelines.

wait what? TOS good storytelling? The storytelling of TOS may have been good for it's day (not really), but is cringeworthy aweful in retrospect. There are only a handfull episodes that aged well. The majority is horrible even by 1960's standards. People liked it because it was new and had an inspireing feel to it...the stories were borderline garbage except for 5 or 6 good ones.
And that is not even my own opinion man, it has been said by most of the cast members over the years including Nemoy, Takei and the others.
Same goes with TNG btw, which has a lot more good episodes (ran 8 seasons), but there are some you just want to destroy with fire, especially season 1.

The funny part is however that these 2, despite those many poorly written episodes are my favourite Trek series...seriously, but I'm not blind to their many, many flaws.

On topic: Well, a 59 year old who detests the new Trek, of which HE is clearly not the target audience...yep cryptic should really follow the advice of that numerous core demographic instead of maybe cater to people who do like the new Trek, one of the most successful boxoffice movies of last year.

    Really tough call

Them's your options. I am so sick of this "second-class citizen" garbage by "true" Star Trek fans. This is a Star Trek game. Abrams made Star Trek. Live with it. Anything less directly contradicts the ideals of the franchise you claim to love so much. INFINITE DIVERSITY IN INFINITE COMBINATIONS.

    Well said.
I even heard of someone who was so adamant that anything NOT directly controlled by Gene Roddenberry was NOT Star Trek. Well I guess that means Star Trek ended with season 2 of TNG.
